The Swimming Hole at Big Mama’s When we left Emory Gap, we moved up to Old Coalfield Road, north of Harriman. It was a rural area with several kids and many good families. I was finishing off the sixth grade when I transferred to Little Emory School. I was immature for my age, and didn’t even think about boys--I just wanted to have fun. The only use I had for boys was that we needed them to make up a neighborhood basketball or softball team. My brother Larry was in the Army, and when he’d come in on leave, he’d drive us, and any other kids that wanted to go, to the nearest swimming hole and let us swim and cool off. Back then, few houses had air conditioning. The swimming hole was located just before what is now Cumberland Utility Office. It’s the Emory River Embayment and wasn’t but about chest deep. We always called it “Big Mama’s” due to the fact that it was located just beyond a local bar with the same name. The ground surrounding the swimming hole was pasture land, and cows lazily walked around eating the grass or they would climb in the water to cool off. A lot of times, we would have to go in the water and push the cows out of the way so we could swim. They never volunteered to get out of the way. It was either we swim, or the cows do. So, we kept shoving the cows until they reluctantly gave up and moved out of the water. The water was muddy, and it had cow urine and feces in it, but we had all had our typhoid “lockjaw” shots, so we were safe. But, it was still sickening when you’d accidently swallow a mouthful of it. As kids, we did so many things that makes me now wonder how any of us survived to be responsible adults without limbs missing, or loosing our lives. But, most of us made it only to see our kids and grand kids turn their nose up at muddy water and complain that it’s too dirty to swim in. It’s sad that they are choosing to not make some of the best memories we made as kids.

Past, Present & Future The Princess Theatre was once downtown Harriman’s crown jewel, a 900-seat showplace that provided entertainment to movie-goers from Harriman and surrounding areas. Crescent Amusement opened the Princess in September 1926, and it was known as one of the larger movie theatres in a small town. The Princess suffered minor damage in a September 1932 fire, but was not so fortunate a few years later. In January 1939, a blaze destroyed the building, and the loss led to new theater construction in Harriman. The Princess reopened on Nov. 16, 1939, and began showing movies once again. L.W. Bevel, from Sudekum Theatres, was the manager of the new Princess. The day the theatre reopened, Mr. Bevel happily greeted customers as they walked through the Princess’ doors and handed over their tickets to see “Fifth Avenue Girl” starring Ginger Rogers. The Princess continued on for several years, showing movies, and creating memories, for Roane Countians. In 1987, theatre manager Cecil Johnson began to lease the theatre when he learned that the company which owned the Princess planned to close it. The theatre stayed open until 1999 when Mr. Johnson retired. Then, her doors were closed. Beginning in 2001, the City of Harriman, Roane State Community College, the Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman, Roane County Schools, business leaders and community leaders worked together to renovate the theatre. The Princess Theatre Foundation formed in 2004 to raise money for the project, and the organization continues to support the theatre.

The renovation was supported by a $317,000 grant awarded to the City of Harriman by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. In addition, TVA donated $1.7 million to the Princess Theatre Foundation for the renovation. Sparkman and Associates Architects were hired to restore the Princess in September of 2009.
The Princess doesn’t show just movies anymore; it is a performing arts and education center that includes Channel 15 television station. The stage was more than doubled in size, and the theatre was restored back to its 1930s art deco grandeur.

Now’s the time to start thinking about planning your garden While it may be too soon to begin planting your garden, it’s not too soon to begin planning that garden. The weather is starting to warm up on the Plateau and, as long as Mother Nature cooperates, conditions will soon be ideal for gardening. But before you get outside and start digging in the dirt, there are plenty of things to do from a planning perspective. With that in mind, the Cumberland County Master Gardeners Association is gearing up for its 13th Annual Spring Flower & Garden Show, April 24-26, at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds, 1398 Livingston Road. The show runs Friday from 11 to 6; Saturday hours are 9 to 5; and on Sunday the show hours are 11 to 3. This year’s theme is Exploring Nature’s Palette. Around the fairgrounds, both inside and out, will be new and returning vendors, displaying and selling wares. In addition to vendor booths offering everything from plants to gardening tools and locally produced honey, the show will again feature the popular Ask A Master Gardener booth, a family activity area and a silent auction. There will also be informative demonstrations and talks from local, regional and nationally recognized experts on a range of topics. Friday, UT Professor Dr. Mark Windham will speak about hydrangeas, roses, azaleas and dogwoods; Saturday, Troy Marden, host of Volunteer Gardener, takes the stage. Other speakers are Sally Wencel, Nursery Manager and Board member at Trailhead Nursery in Lone Oak, discussing native plants; Master Gardener Diane Morey, speaking about vermiculture; and Lisa Bedner, Medicine Woman of the Teehahnahmah Nation and owner of Pipsissewa Herbs. Additional speakers include Beth Willis, coordinator of the UT Gardens volunteer program; Gregg Upchurch, Agricultural Agent for UT Extension in Cumberland County; and noted Atlanta-area artist Linda Fraser. Ron Daniels, Master Consulting Rosarian with the American Rose Society and a member of the Nashville Rose Society will also be on hand to conduct demonstrations on pruning rose bushes. Admission is $3 and is valid for all three days of the show. Admission is free for all Master Gardeners wearing their name tags. St. Peter looks at the second blonde, shakes his head in disgust, tells her she's wrong, and then peers over his glasses at the third blonde and asks, "What is Easter?" The third blonde smiles confidently and looks St. Peter in the eyes, "I know what Easter is." "Oh?" says St. Peter, incredulously. "Easter is the Christian holiday, that coincides with the Jewish celebration of Passover. Jesus and his disciples were eating at the last supper. Then the Romans took him to be crucified and he was stabbed in the side, made to wear a crown of thorns, and was hung on a cross with nails through his hands. He was buried in a nearby cave which was sealed off by a large boulder." St. Peter smiles broadly with delight. Then the third blonde continues, "Every year the boulder is moved aside so that Jesus can come out...and, if he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter."

All I Need to Know About Life I Learned from the Easter Bunny
Don't put all of your eggs in one basket. Walk softly and carry a big carrot. Everyone needs a friend who is all ears. There's no such thing as too much candy. All work and no play can make you a basket case. Everyone is entitled to a bad hare day. Let happy thoughts multiply like rabbits. Keep your paws off other people's jellybeans. The grass is always greener in someone else's basket. An Easter bonnet can tame even the wildest hare. To show your true colors you have to come out of your shell.
In memory of my dear son, Franklin Goss
who passed away December, 23 1994. 20 years ago since you went away and left our home so lonely. How our hearts still ache with sadness often our eyes shed many tears. A precious one took from us is gone silent, the voice we loved to hear a vacant place no one can fill, those smiles no longer brighten our home and it’s so hard to face the tomorrows. Some say time heals all sorrow and helps us to forget, but time so far has only proven how much we all miss you my son, death leaves heartaches. None can never heal but God knows all things and gave us strength to bear it, yes we loved you my dear son but God called for you to come home. We can’t understand why but we long for the day when we will meet again in a land where we never be parted anymore.

It seems like there are days when life gives us moments that make us question our self-worth. It's in these moments that we have to take a step back, take a deep breath and realize that a few bad moments doesn't mean we have a bad life. A few bad moments doesn't mean we are a bad people. A few bad moments does not determine our future. I hope you can see in yourself the absolutely amazing person that you are. And that no matter what you are faced with today you will get through this. Most of the time we have no control over what happens to us but we always have control of how we react to it. I am so grateful for the daily lessons of life. I can honestly say that I don't always make the right decisions and little by little I become stronger and more sensitive to my surroundings and without the tough experiences I would not be the person I am today. Every day I look to improve some aspect of my life. When I'm faced with similar trials that in the past I handled miserably I am so thankful for the opportunity to go through it again to prove I am more capable. Never ever give up on yourself. When it seems like the weight of the world is pressing you down that is the very moment you have to dig deep and tell yourself, "I am empowered to do great things, I will get through." The most beautiful people I think in this world are the ones that have that unique courage to be themselves. No matter what anyone says, no matter how many laugh or mock them, they continue to be themselves even if they are alone. They don't change to get anyone to like them. They smile because they're happy and content with themselves. Believe in yourself like so many others believe in you!!

The Dead Church A new Pastor in a small Oklahoma town spent the first four days making personal visits to each of the members, inviting them to come to his first services. The following Sunday the church was all but empty. Accordingly, the Pastor placed a notice in the local newspapers, stating that, because the church was dead, it was everyone's duty to give it a decent Christian burial. The funeral would be held the following Sunday afternoon, the notice said. Morbidly curious, a large crowd turned out for the "funeral." In front of the pulpit, they saw a closed coffin, smothered in flowers. After the Pastor delivered the eulogy, he opened the coffin and invited his congregation to come forward and pay their final respects to their dead church. Filled with curiosity as to what would represent the corpse of a "dead church," all the people eagerly lined up to look in the coffin. Each "mourner" peeped into the coffin then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look. In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a large mirror.

A pastor explained to his congregation that the church was in need of some extra money, so he offered that whoever gave the most would be able to pick three hymns. After the offering plates were passed about the church, the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had graciously given a $100 bill. He was so excited that he immediately shared his joy with his congregation and said he'd like to personally thank the person. NOT READY TO FILE - THINK EXTENSION We are almost to the April 15th deadline and you are still not ready to file your tax return, what do you do? Think extension! • Extensions can give you 6 more months to get your tax materials together and file your completed tax return. • If you are due a refund you are not required to file a tax return. Therefore, you do not need to meet the April 15th deadline, so you do not even need to think of an extensions. You can file anytime to claim your refund. • If you owe the IRS you are expected to do as complete and accurate return as possible before the April 15th deadline. Provide as much information as possible to be included in the tax return you file requesting an extension. • You will be expected to send at least some payment with your request for an extension. • If you do not pay the tax due by April 15th you will owe interest on any amount not paid. You may also be charged a penalty. • If you are not able to file because you are missing a w2 as long as you have the information from your last paycheck a substitute w-2 can be created allowing you to file. • If you are missing other information check to see if the information is available online. • Do not ignore the deadline. Any response its better than none. • Finally, talk to your tax preparer to see what information they can assist you in obtaining. If you are having difficulties in meeting your tax obligations a good tax preparer can be your best ally. I have gotten several questions on self employment concerning what can I deduct and do I have to file on my self employment income. Also many questions on how long do I need to keep my tax records. If you have self employment income it can be confusing about what you can deduct on your tax return. If you will send me an email requesting a schedule C worksheet, I will send you a worksheet that will clarify what can be deducted. I also have worksheets for many different types of self employment. In your email if you will mention your type of business I will also send you that worksheet if I have one for your business type. As for when you need to file on self employment income if you had 400 dollars in income you are required to file a tax return and claim this income. This income would also make you required to meet the requirements for the Affordable Care Act. How long to keep tax returns? The answer is it is generally recommend that you keep tax returns for three years. I recommend 7 years because I have worked for some clients where the taxing authority was requesting information 6 years back. Remember its not just the IRS auditing the returns it will also be any states listed on your return. If you discard your tax return you should keep a copy of your w-2's and any income statements indefinitely. The reason for keeping these is that when you get ready to file for Social Security benefits if there is a mistake you have documentation of what you should have listed in your account. A good practice is to go online and set up an account with the Social Security Office. You will then go in at least once a year and make sure that all income reported to you is posted in your SS account and posted correctly. If you need information on setting up this account send me an email requesting the information or stop by the office and I will give you the site you need to go to. In closing, a word of caution. No matter what firm or person files your tax return you are the one responsible for the information on the tax return. Preparers do not verify information given them they only report it on your tax return Most offices even have you sign a paper to that effect. So with that in mind and along with the fact that the IRS does audit some returns I would suggest the following: Find a tax preparer that is accessible all year long, IRS letters do not just come out during the tax season. If you get a letter from a taxing authority take it immediately to your tax preparer and together prepare your response to it. If you find an error, or realize some income, deduction etc has been left out you will need to do an amended return. Most times, if you go back to the service that filed your return you can get the amended done at a reduced rate since they did the first return. If you take it to a different service they will normally charge you the full rate for amending the return. Unless you feel the original preparer is the problem and not able to provide accurate work it is normally best to go back to the original preparer. Another good reason to make sure your tax preparer is available year round is life happens and many times it will effect your tax return. They should be there to give you the information you need to make the best decisions to insure you are meeting your tax requirements and hopefully insure you pay your fair share of taxes and no more. COINS LEFT ON TOMBSTONES While visiting some cemeteries you may notice that headstones marking certain graves have coins on them, left by previous visitors to the grave. These coins have distinct meanings when left on the headstones of those who gave their life while serving in America's military, and these meanings vary depending on the denomination of coin. A coin left on a headstone or at the grave site is meant as a message to the deceased soldier's family that someone else has visited the grave to pay respect. Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited. A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, while a dime means you served with him in some capacity. By leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the soldier when he was killed. According to tradition, the money left at graves in national cemeteries and state veterans cemeteries is eventually collected, and the funds are put toward maintaining the cemetery or paying burial costs for indigent veterans. In the US, this practice became common during the Vietnam war, due to the political divide in the country over the war; leaving a coin was seen as a more practical way to communicate that you had visited the grave than contacting the soldier's family, which could devolve into an uncomfortable argument over politics relating to the war. Some Vietnam veterans would leave coins as a "down payment" to buy their fallen comrades a beer or play a hand of cards when they would finally be reunited. The tradition of leaving coins on the headstones of military men and women can be traced to as far back as the Roman Empire.

Where’s the Money?
The Mafia was looking for a new man to make weekly collections from all the private businesses that they were "protecting." Feeling the heat from the police force, they decide to use a deaf and dumb person for this job. If he were to get caught, he wouldn't be able to tell the police what he was doing. On his first week, the collector picks up over $40,000. He gets greedy, decides to stash it. The Mafia soon realizes that their collection is late, and sends some of their hoods after the deaf and dumb collector. The hoods find the collector and ask him where the money is. The deaf and dumb collector can't communicate with them, so the Mafia drags the guy to an interpreter. The Mafia hood says to the interpreter, "Ask him where da money is." The interpreter signs, "Where's the money?" The dumb man signs back, "I don't know what you're talking about." The interpreter tells the hood, "He says he doesn't know what you're talking about." The hood pulls out a .38 and places it in the ear of the dumb collector. "Now ask him where the money is!" The interpreter signs, "Where is the money? The deaf man signs back, "The $40,000 is in a tree stump in Central Park." The interpreter says to the hood, "He says he still doesn't know what you're talking about, and doesn't think you have the guts to pull the trigger."

Household Hints Buy a lovely storage box and fill it with a selection of cards for every occasion. Also put in it a selection of different colored wrapping paper (the folded packs you can get) and a book of stamps. You will then have your own compact gift wrapping station and no excuse for not sending a birthday or other occasion card out at any time. When potting plants, place a coffee filter in the bottom of the pot over the drainage holes to prevent the soil draining out. Make stripping wallpaper easier by adding a tablespoon of baking soda to each bucketful of water. Clean oil spots on the path or driveway by sprinkling bicarbonate of soda and scrubbing with a wet brush. For kids’ outdoor toys, purchase a weatherproof, bench-style storage box and store toys inside. Also, gather all outdoor balls and place into a large, mesh drawstring bag and store in garage. When painting a room put a freshly cut onion in there to get rid of the smell. Fill the petrol tank the day before so you won’t have to worry about getting petrol if you are running late the next morning.

Bacon Cheddar Tomato Pie
1 frozen deep dish pie shell 1/2 cup shredded provolone or mozzarella 6-7 strips of bacon cooked and crumbled 1/2 cup mayonnaise 4 medium sized firm ripe tomatoes sliced Basil, fresh or dried to taste 1 medium onion peeled and thinly sliced Salt and pepper to taste 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Bake pie shell according to directions on package, being careful not to allow it to get too brown. When finished with pie shell set the oven temperature to 350 degrees. Slice tomatoes and place in colander over a bowl, sprinkle with salt and allow to drain for at least 15 minutes while you crisp the bacon, bake the pie shell and prepare cheese mixture. Mix cheeses and mayonnaise together in a small bowl. Layer tomato and onion slices in the pie shell sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Add a dash or two of basil, again to your taste. Add about half the bacon pieces. Try to get all that goodness into your pie shell without overflowing onto the crust rim. Spoon the cheese/mayo mixture on top and spread so that it covers the top like a crust. Scatter the remainder of the crumbled bacon over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 35-40 minutes until golden brown. Check the pie about halfway through baking. If the crust edge begins to turn too brown you can place a little rim of aluminum foil over just the edge of crust while the pie finishes baking. Remove from oven and let cool for about 20 minutes. Serve warm.
Rice Pilaf with Vermicelli

2/3 cup long-grain white rice 1 ounce angel-hair pasta 1 can (14.5 ounces) reduced-sodium 2 tablespoons olive oil chicken broth 1/2 small onion, finely chopped Coarse salt and ground pepper 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped Keep rooms free of flies by putting a vase of lavender by any open Hold pasta upright in a medium bowl, and, using kitchen shears, cut into 1/2-inch lengths; set aside. windows – they hate it! In a medium saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high. Add onion; season with salt and Place a button at the end of a sticky tape roll so the end will be easy pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until softened and lightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Add rice, pasta, and remaining tablespoon oil. When butter has melted, remove pan from oven..Whisk flour, 3/4 cup of sugar, baking powder and salt in small bowl. Add milk; whisk to form a smooth batter. Pour batter into pan, then scatter fruit over batter. Sprinkle with remaining 1 Tb. of sugar. Bake until batter browns and fruit bubbles, 50 to 60 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature with a dollop of whipped cream or a small scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Make your ceiling seem higher. Paint it a lighter tone than the walls. Use a primer coat. Your paint will go on easier and will be less likely to fade and chip. Another tip: ask the paint store to tint your primer the same shade you intend to use for the paint. That way you can see how a certain shade really looks on your walls without committing to that color.

Just add a little vinegar or lemon juice to your regular milk. It won’t have quite the same texture, but will have a similar effect on your baking. Do you have water leaking through the ceiling? Immediately drill a small hole to allow the water to drain before it damages the plaster or drywall. Once the leak is repaired spackle the hole and repaint. Protect your ears. When you don't have earplugs, roll up toilet paper, dampen it slightly, then stick it into your ears. Stop glue from drying up. Partially used tubes of glue won't dry up if stored in tightly closed jars. Can't find an earring or other small object? Put a nylon stocking over the tube of a vacuum cleaner and vacuum the spot where you think the object will be. The vacuum will suck the object up but it will be caught in the stocking. Are your windshield wipers a little smeary? You can get a little more life out of your wipers by using some fine sandpaper to rough up the wiper blade.
If you have thin surface scratches on glass, rub a little toothpaste over the surface. Finishing by polishing off with a soft cloth. To remove moldy smells from towels, wash with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. The smell will disappear they will be lovely and fresh again.

Imagine going to the bank to withdraw some cash.
Having some cash on hand is always a sensible strategy. Especially now as more bank deposits drop into negative interest rate territory, meaning that you have to pay the banks for the privilege of having them gamble with your money.
You tell the teller that you'd like to withdraw $5,000 from your account. She hesitates nervously and wants to know why. You try to respectfully let her know that that's none of the bank's business as it's your money. The teller leaves for a few minutes, leaving you waiting. Bob Tonachio When she returns she tells you that you can have your money in a few days as they don't have it on hand at the moment. Frustrated and concerned because of the inconvenience, you head home. But as you pull into your driveway later there's an unexpected surprise waiting for you: two police officers would like to have a word with you about your intended withdrawal earlier... If this sounds unbelievable, think again. Because it could very well become a reality in the USA… if the Justice Department gets its way. Earlier this month, a senior official from the Justice Department spoke to a clique of bankers about the need for them to report their bank customers to the police. What a lot of people don’t realize is that banks are already unpaid government spies. Federal regulations in the USA FORCE banks to file ‘suspicious activity reports’ or SARs on their customers. And it’s not optional. Banks have minimum quotas of SARs they need to fill out and submit to the federal government. If they don’t file enough SARs, they can be fined. They can lose their banking charter. Bank executives and directors can even be imprisoned for noncompliance. This is the nature of the financial system in the USA. And chances are, your banker has filled one out on you—they submitted 1.6 MILLION SARs in 2013 alone. But now the Justice Department is saying that SARs aren’t enough. Now, whenever banks suspect something ‘suspicious’ is going on, they want banks to pick up the phone and call the cops: “We encourage those institutions to consider whether to take more action: specifically, to alert law enforcement authorities about the problem, who may be able to seize the funds, initiate an investigation, or take other proactive steps.” So what exactly constitutes ‘suspicious activity’? Basically anything. According to the handbook for the Federal Financial Institution Examination Council, banks are required to file a SAR with respect to: “Transactions conducted or attempted by, at, or through the bank (or an affiliate) and aggregating $5,000 or more…” It’s utterly obscene. According to the Justice Department, going to the bank and withdrawing $5,000 should potentially prompt a banker to inform your suspicious action to the police. There’s something else about this that I want to point out, though: this may be a very early form of capital controls in the USA. The 6 Worst Etiquette Mistakes We Make With Money Why are some people so clueless about money etiquette? Really, you don’t have to have a lot of money to understand basic, common courtesy when it comes to finances. This isn’t difficult stuff. So why do some people refuse to leave a decent tip, and why do other people feel like they must tell everyone in their church group how much they make? These, dear readers, are financial faux pas—the worst of the worst etiquette mistakes people make with their money. Don’t find yourself falling prey to one of these dubious mistakes. 1. Tipping poorly. Dear Ms. Bad Tipper: Nothing says, “Thank you for taking my order, bringing my food, refilling my drinks, and providing good overall service,” like that $1.56 tip you left on your $20 order. Just think: If your server invests that $1.56 tip in a 12% growth stock mutual fund, they’ll have $17.20 in 20 years! How fancy! In all seriousness, here’s a tip about tipping: Unless your server cursed at you and threw grilled eggplant at your wife, tip 15–20%. Is that really too much to ask for someone who helped you put food in your belly? 2. Talking about how much money you make. Unless you’re calling into Dave’s show to make your debt-free scream, your household income really isn’t relevant information in everyday conversation. Usually, people who freely share this type of personal information are high-earners, so it only comes across as bragging. Every conversation is a new opportunity to share their income: “Hey Jim. What about that storm last night? Thought a tree might fall on my house, but I make 250k a year, so we could’ve handled it. How’s your wife?” 3. Talking about how much you give. This one is just as bad as talking about how much you make. No doubt that building wealth and finding financial peace is all about giving to others and changing your family tree. But that doesn’t mean you should broadcast the amount you tithe and give to charity like it’s a tattoo on your forearm. Genuine givers are humble and even secretive when it’s called for. If you’re giving in hopes that one day you’ll have a county bridge named after you and a statue in town square, then you’re giving for the wrong reasons. 4. Bumming off your friends all the time. Every group of friends has one. The bum. The mooch. The guy who always realizes he’s “forgotten” his cash right when the check arrives. Don’t be that guy. Here’s the thing: You might save a couple of dollars here and there, but at what cost? Everyone in your group of friends knows what’s up. They aren’t stupid. You’ve been labeled as the “group mooch.” And, before long, you won’t get invited to dinner, and then you’ll become “the guy who invites himself to dinner,” in addition to being the group mooch. Then you’ll become a social pariah and never score another date—all because you weren’t willing to pay for a $3 taco. 5. Making unreasonable offers when negotiating. One of the quickest ways to end a negotiation is to make a ridiculous offer. It shows the seller that you aren’t serious about buying and you think they’re stupid. You’re saying, “Hey idiot. You obviously have no concept of the cost of physical objects that exist on this Earth. But, tell you what, I’ll humor you and offer you 40% of your asking price. You’re welcome. Dummy.” How do you know if you’re making an unreasonable offer? Put yourself in their shoes. Would you take $150,000 for a house that’s listed for $275,000? Would you take a quarter for a lamp that’s priced $10 at a garage sale? 6. Putting business over friendships. Dave says all the time that business partnerships are a bad idea. Why? Because business and friendships rarely mix. There are too many complications and emotions involved. But good friends part ways all the time because someone decided to throw business into the mix. It’s the guy who thinks his buddy with a nice office job is obligated to make a spot for him. It’s the guy who gets into a multi-level scheme and proceeds to badger all of his friends to “not miss this opportunity!” It’s the athlete who signs his first big contract and feels like all of his childhood friends deserve a cut. A business opportunity may improve, but a friendship will soon end. You can count on that.

An Amish family from Pennslyvania decides to go to the Big Apple for the first Time in their lives; Mother, Father and their son. They go into the Empire State Building. As they're walking around they notice the elevator. Never seeing one before they stand in front of it bewildered. While staring at it, an old lady in a wheelchair rolls up to it, pushes the button, the door opens, she rolls herself inside and the door closes. Grandpa’s Hands
Grandpa, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. He didn't move, just sat with his head down staring at his hands. When I sat down beside him he didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat, I wondered if he was OK. Finally, not really wanting to disturb him but wanting to check on him at the same time, I asked him if he was OK. He raised his head and looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I'm fine. Thank you for asking," he said in a clear strong voice. "I didn't mean to disturb you, Grandpa, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK," I explained to him. "Have you ever looked at your hands," he asked. "I mean really looked at your hands?" I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point he was making. Grandpa smiled and related this story: "Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled, and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse and walked my daughter down the aisle. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day, when not much of anything else of me works real well, these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of my life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ." I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandpa's hands and led him home. When my hands are hurt or sore I think of Grandpa. I know he has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

Many deaths are associated with this famous bridge, but it’s one of the world’s safest!
If you’ve ever been worried about the thousands of people and vehicles crossing the famous Brooklyn Bridge every day, let us put your mind to rest. Trust us, this bridge can handle the extreme stress. Strangely, that’s because the engineers who originally built the wonder thought they would be working with some really awful material and had to overcompensate. The bridge was planned to be overbuilt since manufacturer fraud was all too common in that era. The materials the builders got, primarily the wire that went into the main cables, were substandard and would barely hold if it was planned like a normal bridge should. Upon construction, even with the bad wires, the cables had a safety factor of five, or about five times stronger than they actually needed to be. Even though the bridge may be safe, that doesn’t mean there isn’t death and tragedy surrounding it. Nearly 40 lives were lost while building it, including the man who was the creative genius behind the design and his son who took on the project after his death. When it finally opened, a dozen people were trampled to death when people thought the bridge was giving way. Since then, the record’s been astonishingly clean. Only one death was caused by the bridge itself; in 1981, a Japanese tourist was killed by two diagonal stays when they snapped and fell onto the promenade.

The neighbor of a four-year-old child was an elderly gentleman, who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old Gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy just said, 'Nothing, I just Helped him cry.'

Rockwood Memories By: Ray Collet
Lots of people have asked about the Boy Scout Memorial which is located near the White's Creek bridge on Highway 27 just south of Rockwood. After a lot of research, I decided to send in what I had. The majority of the article is from a first hand account from Lloyd G. McCluen. On Friday afternoon, March 22, 1929 an excited group of boys left Rockwood for a week end camp at the Tarwater bungalow on White's Creek. It was cold and drizzling rain, but this made little difference to the boys of Boy Scout Troop # 45, because we had been looking forward to this adventure for approximately two months. Those making the trip were, Scoutmaster James T. Wright, Scouts Joe Brashears, Howard Brown, Carl Mee, Jr., James Cole, L.G. McCluen, Clifford Seward, Bill Taylor, Willie Evans, Jack Shamhart, Jack Hamby, Ted Derrick, Paul Hickey, Jack Tarwater Jr., Willard Staples, Roy Green, J. C. Hill , Woodrow Kerr, Lawrence Montgomery, Ed Burnett, Fred Burnett, and Walter Polston, Harry Shamhart, and Tom Douglas, younger brothers of Willie Evans and Jack Shamhart accompanied the troop. On most of our camping trips,the members of the troop did the cooking, but this time we took along Dick Gilbreath to cook for us. Upon arriving at the bungalow, we did our regular chores of making camp, and Dick Gilbreath prepared the supper. We had to start the Delco system which furnished lights, got in wood, and arranged our gear. After enjoing a hearty meal, we gathered in the living room in the center of the cabin around a big fire. Here we organized boxing matches and wrestling contests. When we had exhausted ourselves with our games, Jim Wright concluded the activities by telling a ghost story. Howard and Walter Polston had to return home that night, so they and Dick Gilbreath went back to town, intending to return the next day. It was still drizzling a slow, steady rain and we made beds on the floor of the cabin. Since we were all so tired from the games we had played, we kept no watch that night. I can recall no other trip on which this was not done, as it was a custom to keep watch all night. About 4:00 o'clock a.m. Willard Staples, who was sleeping by the door, awakened us exclaiming that water was running in on him. Someone opened the door, and we saw that White's Creek had risen to the level of the cabin. The Tarwater bungalow was built about eight feet above the creek level, and the water had never been known to get this high. Upon discovering the heighth of the water, Jim Wright took control to warn everyone to remain calm while he and Joe Brashears tried wading out. There was a low place between the front of the cabin and the garage ,and the water was flowing very swiftly with a great deal of debris. Realizing that it was impossible to get all the boys out, Jim Wright decided that the safest place would be on top of the cabin, and we climbed up to the top using the bars on the window as a ladder. There was no panic, because Jim Wright was loved and respected by everyone in the troop, and we fully trusted his judgment. After we had been on the roof about two hours, we saw lights on the railroad trestle across White's Creek. Excitedly we began signaling with Morse Code. We later learned that Wilmer Shamhart, father of Jack and Harry, John McCluen, my brother, and Luther Majors were on the bridge. However, none of them could read the code. About 6 o'clock in the morning, the steel highway bridge across White's Creek washed away, releasing a wall of water and debris. Shortly thereafter the garage and Delco house washed away. Jim Wright's new Chrysler 77 coupe came floating by, and the bungalow started breaking up. A chimney cracked and part of it fell in. At this time I moved to the top of the far bedroom. There was a loud crack, and the bedroom on which James Cole and I were standing seemed to pull upstream against the current, away from the main part of the house. Several of the boys fell through into the water and the bedroom portion then crashed back into them. Afterwards it turned like a box and floated into the main portion of the stream. The side of the roof on which James Cole and I were standing kept tilting, causing the roof to roll, so we kept running around trying to keep it balanced as we floated down stream. The two of us floated on this entire room and continued down stream for approximately one-fourth of a mile until we hit some trees and debris. This knocked the bottom and sides of the room out, but still left us a good portion of the roof on which we could ride. As we rode down stream we noticed Paul Hickey and Jack Tarwater clinging to trees floating ahead of us. As we rounded the bend opposite the Calvin James property we suddenly were thrown into a pine thicket, and we did not see Paul or Jack anymore after that. As I started to follow Jimmy Cole up a pine tree, I heard a cry for help. I looked over about ten feet where I saw Roy Green. I came out of the tree and started for him, but before I had taken two strokes something had hit Roy from beneath and he was gone. I returned to the tree and found seven other scouts had landed there and were clinging to the branches. The tree soon washed down and we all moved to other trees and debris. Tom Douglas had a broken leg, and his brother Willie Evans was taking care of him. Jack Hamby, Clifford Seward and I swam over to some debris stacked against some trees, and we stayed there until we were rescued. Soon after we arrived at this point, Carl Mee Jr. and Joe Brashears appeared. Joe was cut on the face and Jack Hamby's little finger was cut off at the first joint. The water continued to rise until about 10:00 o'clock. All along the creek scouts were climbing trees, only to have them washed out from under them. At 10:30 John Ward swam to the pile of debris looking for his nephew, Woodrow Kerr. We could not give him any information, so he swam on in search of Woodrow. About 11:30, George King, Sam Chevront and Charles Fulks managed to get the first boat over to the pile of debris where we were. They first took the injured back to safety and Mr. King stayed with the rest of us. The injured were taken to the home of Fielding Hedgecoth, who had made it available for all victims. At the Hedgecoth home, Doctors Tom Phillips, Charley Wilson and George Ed Wilson were waiting on the injured. It was impossible to get an ambulance to the Hedgecoth home at the time. The last of us were taken from the pile of debris about 2:30 in the afternoon. Upon arrival at the Hedgecoth home, we were required to drink a hot cup of ginger tea. I remember how this tea caused the chill resulting from ten hours in the cold water to disappear. Willard Staples received a crushed hip, and was found farther upstream by a group led by Wallace Raulston and Charley Acuff. Willard stayed in the hospital for a year following the flood beacuse of his extensive injuries. Of the original group who had left Rockwood the day before, seven scouts and the scoutmaster were drowned. The scouts were Jack Shamhart, J. C. Hill, Roy Green, Woodrow Kerr, Lawrence Montgomery and the twins Ed Burnett and Fred Burnett. The scoutmaster was James Tarwater Wright, to whom all who survived possibly owe their lives. In the eyes of the members of Troop #45, Jim Wright was one of the great scout masters of this country. He gave much of his time, talent, and money to scout work. He was last seen trying to save one of the boys, and all surviving members of this troop are confident that he gave his live trying to save one of us. How to avoid spending more at the store Food prices are soaring, and stores are pulling out all the stops to create the illusion of savings, value and good deals. Here’s how grocery stores get shoppers to overspend — and how to defend yourself… • Buy one, get one free. These offers make you feel that you are getting two items for “half price.” But it isn’t really half price if the cost is more than that of a similar item — and you’re getting no bargain at all if you don’t want or can’t use more than one of a product. Self-defense: Ask the manager whether you can buy one item for half the price of two. Stores don’t advertise this alternative, but it often is allowed. • Limit four per person. Scarcity exerts a powerful effect on shoppers. Any time you’re restricted from buying, a hoarding mentality kicks in and you are likely to buy more than you need. Problem: Excess items can spoil, sit in your cupboard for years or simply get thrown out. Self-defense: Purchase only the amount that you reasonably need and can use, no matter how good the price. • Double discounts. Quick: If you were given a choice of buying a $100 item at 50% off or buying the same item at 25% off with an additional 30% discount given at the register, which would you choose? Most consumers add the 25% and 30% and think that they are getting 55% off the product. In reality, they are paying $2.50 more. Self-defense: Look at the fine print on the shelves to see if the store does “unit pricing” breakdowns for you (showing the final cost per ounce, pound, piece or whatever the unit is). Or better yet, bring a calculator to cut through the number games. • Country-of-origin labeling. With the recent scare over tainted products from China, stores know that consumers will pay more for food they trust. I’ve seen supermarket signs promoting “Live Maine Lobsters” or “Washington State Apples” with fine print that reads, respectively, “Imported from Chile” and “Product of Mexico.” Self-defense: Don’t trust store signs for foods’ countries of origin. Check origin labels on the products. For organic foods, which often are priced higher, look for proof of authenticity. To be 100% sure that the product is organic, the packaging should carry a stamp that reads, “OTCO” (which means it is certified by Oregon Tilth, a national nonprofit organic certification organization) or “USDA Organic.” • Alluring end caps. These are stand-alone display cases at the ends of aisles. On average, shoppers are 30% more likely to buy end-cap goods than those in the middle of an aisle. End caps seem to have good deals — some say, “Stock up now!” or “Great price!” — but half the time, they’re not. In fact, these prime spots often are reserved for high-profit, so-called gourmet foods. Self-defense: Buy from an end-cap only if it is truly a good deal. Be wary of freestanding (island) displays as well. They offer a different kind of impulse buy — expensive, “integrated” merchandise. For instance, an island display may group pricey strawberries, pastry shells and whipped cream together so that the customer thinks, I’ll make strawberry shortcake for dessert. • Presliced produce. Sliced foods can cost twice as much as whole foods. Self-defense: Pay value-added prices for prepared meals only if they really save you significant time and effort. Example: A ready-to-eat whole chicken may be worth twice as much to you as a raw one if it saves you an hour or so of preparing and roasting. I also am willing to pay more for packaged, combination salads because doing so saves me time and money. To prepare the same kind of salad myself, I would have to buy four different varieties of lettuce.

What to eat when you have a cold When the common cold strikes (as it tends to do this time of year), as the saying goes, you should "feed a cold and starve a fever," right? Or is it "feed a fever and starve a cold"? Either way, there are a whole host of foods that are hugely helpful when we get sick, and we’re not just talking about chicken soup. We’ve rounded up 10 foods that you should definitely seek out next time you feel yourself coming down with a cold. When we get sick, the first things we tend to reach for are the over-the-counter medicines like Sudafed or Tylenol Cold, or possibly more homeopathic options like Cold-EEZE, which is basically just a whole lot of zinc and has been proven to shorten colds. But did you know that you could get more zinc from three oysters than you would from a Cold-EEZE? For thousands of years humans have been shortening their colds naturally, and there are plenty of foods out there that are quite effective, for a variety of reasons. Think about it: everyone knows that you should load up on vitamin C when you’re sick. You could either take a vitamin supplement, or you can eat citrus fruits, which are loaded with the vitamin. My favorite patient experience was when someone was prescribed estrogen patches and told to stick one patch on herself every other day. At the next follow-up, she said she didn’t like the patches because she’d been “running out of space”. I didn’t think to clarify to her that she should have been placing a new patch and removing the one from the day before each day. Very amusing. She was indeed covered in sticky patches.

Over 30 million people in China live in energy-efficient caves! Some even have electricity! I guess, when stuck between a rock and a hard place, these people chose the rock option. In China, more that 30 million people find their shelter in caves. However, these unusual forms of housing are more comfortable than you might think. The Loess plateau, located in the Shaanxi province, is very distinct. Known for its cliffs made of yellow, easily-pliable dirt, it acts as the primary site of China’s cave dwelling citizens. Many people reinforce their caves with brick structures. Some connect multiple caves together to create larger homes. Families can even bring in running water and electricity. By their nature, caves act as their own air conditioning and heating system, providing warmth during the winter and cooler temperatures during the summer. Further, caves are one of the greenest forms of housing available, as their designs generally work with nature, not against or in spite of it. “A SPIRIT OF PRAYER & WORSHIP” Quite recently in our church, which is located within the Norwood School Zone, I preached a short sermon on a verse in scripture that says, “Pray without ceasing.” To anyone who has been involved in church for any length of time, especially if it’s a spiritual and vibrant church, this verse isn’t one that you’ve not heard preached on before. Still, there is a heavy Biblical emphasis in being in a mind of prayer, and for that matter a constant state of worship. Worshipping God is always visible and/or audible. Certainly it’s raising our hands, singing in time, saying amen, being reverent, and in accordance to the Bible it can also be done through playing music. And while music isn’t the point of this article, I would like to point out that at the very definition of Praise & Worship is Music. David didn’t pray a prayer; he didn’t preach a sermon; he played his’ harp, and in playing his’ harp (i.e. WORSHIPPING GOD) it ushered in the power and presence of God so strongly that demon spirits which tormented King Saul fled. Back to the topic though.. In James we’re pretty flat out asked how we can have faith without works. James then suggests that he can expressively show his’ faith by his’ works, and then states the reality that faith without work is a dead faith. I’d like to pose this question: “Is it possible to be in a prayerful mindset and not be in a worshipful mind set, or a worshipful mindset and not a prayerful mindset?” The Bible teaches us that our praise and worship ushers in the presence of almighty God. It changes the channel, so to speak. If you’re tuned in to God, then you’re tuned into God. You’re more receptive to His’ voice, His’ guidance, and His’ perfect will for your life. Rev. Smith Wigglesworth stated that after every meal instead of just talking about whatever, he’d devoted himself to read a chapter in the Bible and discuss it with whomever he was with. The powerful things that God did in his’ ministry would not have been there without his’ closeness to God. I personally don’t only think that it’s profitable for churches to have Revivals, but for the leaders and parishioners to live in a constant state of Revival. The Bible tells us that God is so passionate about everyone of us that He knows the very number of hairs on our head. God knows the desires of our hearts. He knows our hurts, and the things that bring us joy. If I were in a relationship with my wife and didn’t know her, that would be a faulty and crumbling relationship. As a man, and someone who loves her it should be my desire to take an interest in the things that interest her to some degree. When Jesus Christ walked the earth masses followed him, but most of that was superficial. They followed him cause of one miracle or another. The same crowd that cheered Jesus on, placing their coats and palm branches for the donkey he was upon would curse and condemn Him one week later. So few were there with Him at the cross, cause so few took the time to know Him and have a close personal relationship with Him. It’s sad because that’s what God desires. And the fact that so many of us stand afar off is what keeps us from becoming what God wants us to be, attaining what He has for us, and receiving some of the greatest blessings life has to offer.

Is your dog a licker? The bottom line is that most of the time, dogs will lick their people as a sign of affection. But much as barking can be, licking is also a multi-faceted tool that seems to play many roles in canine behavior and, consequently, tends towards many different interpretations. Here’s a list of the many ways in which we homo sapiens have come to understand this culturally alien mode of communication: Licking is a natural instinct in canids. When a mother licks her pups and her pups lick each other during the course of grooming and other social interactions, we’re observing quintessential licking behavior in dogs. Indeed, this behavior is held up as one that may serve as the basis for all other licking decisions a dog makes. (“Mom licked me now I lick you...”) • Licking can play a role in the solicitation of resources, as when pups lick their mothers as a precursor to feeding or when lower-ranking pack members lick their superiors in the hopes of an invitation to dine on communal prey. • It’s just another sensory tool, say some researchers. Licking (and tasting) is like reaching out and touching something –– a sort of slobbery exploration. • Canine attention-seeking behavior often incorporates the tongue. Dogs often lick you to get your attention or as a simple greeting. As in, “Hey, I’m here. I’m cute. Pet me.” • Licking may be a way of playing. Many dogs who’s owners report as engaging in excessive licking behavior may be substituting their tongue for their teeth in the reserved dog’s version of a raucous play-fight. • In many cases, licking is a learned behavior. Dogs learn that when they lick their owners they get more attention, so they come to incorporate licking into more and more of their daily behaviors. But what happens when extreme licking happens? Extreme licking tends to be defined not so much by the dog as it is by the human beholder of the behavior. As such, any unwanted display of lingual attention –– even just a couple of polite laps every so often –– could be construed as excessive. Top 3 Bird Pets 1. Parakeets/Budgies These birds make a wonderful pet for children or those who are new to keeping birds. They come in an array of beautiful colors, and require less space and maintenance than larger birds. They are quite intelligent in spite of their small size, and while most are content to whistle and sing, some have been known to learn a word or two. Average life expectancy is 12 - 14 years. 2. Cockatiel These birds are simply a delight to keep. They are known for their surprisingly advanced whistling and singing abilities. While they are capable of learning to talk, many owners find they prefer to whistle, and tend to mimic quirky, random sounds such as the ringing of a telephone. These birds are available in increasing color combinations and have an average life expectancy of between 15 - 20 years. 3. Finches and Canaries These birds measure 5 inches or less. They require less space than most other bird species. They thrive in small flocks, and generally pay little attention to humans -- making them perfect pets for those who love to watch birds, but would like a pet that requires minimal interaction. A well cared for Finch or Canary can live for up to 10 years.

Things Cats Hate Cats Hate Being Ignored by Their Humans Contrary to some people's beliefs, cats are not solitary animals, but they need and enjoy companionship, both with other cats and with their favorite humans. My Jennifur, sulks when I leave her alone too long, and either swats out at me or steals my office chair. I've learned to compensate by taking several fifteen minute breaks during my workday to brush her, entertain her with a wand toy, give her a treat, or just hold her and pet her. Cats Hate Dirty Litter Boxes Cats hate dirty, stinky litter boxes, and may be driven to search for substitutes, whether a corner of the carpet or in a basket of clean laundry in the closet. Think about it: do you enjoy using one of those "portable potties" commonly found in public places? Your cat's sense of smell is 14 times stronger than yours, so a litter box that smells reasonably clean to you may downright stink to your cat's discerning olfactory senses. Cats Hate Overly-Aggressive Petting Some cats are overly sensitive to tactile stimuli. Feline hyperesthesia is often associated with this. Your cat may be on your lap, sharing a tender moment as you are petting her, but after awhile may suddenly growl or hiss, then bite or scratch you and jump down. Cats Hate Loud Noises and Commotion Holiday times are often extremely stressful for cats, especially those we've come to associate with fireworks, such as the 4th of July and New Year's Eve. Loud parties at any time of the year are also stressful for most cats, especially the older ones. Thunderstorms are also a source of fear and stress for many cats. Five of my six cats panic and run to their bedroom sanctuaries whenever they hear a doorbell ring, even on a television commercial. Outside loud sounds are not the only noise that causes stress in cats. Family fights are even worse, because they are between people cats love. Whether it's a fight over finances, or mother-in-law problems, give your cats a break and take the fight outside the house. Take a drive and park somewhere, such as a park, where you are forced to discuss your issues more quietly. You'll not only be forced to discuss the problems more rationally, but your poor cats will avoid one more loud source of stress.
