SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY

By O.I. Seenya •Many volunteers at our fire departments working all hours of the day and night to extinguish brush fires that have gotten out of control due to people’s negligence. These firefighters are NOT paid for their service. If you see one, thank them.

•A lady in a bathroom stall answering several questions asked from another lady in the next stall before realizing the other lady was talking to someone else on her cellphone.

•A three year old, after not getting his way, exclaiming, “THAT’S IT, I’M GOING TO HEAVEN!” •A woman walking up to another lady and commenting on how their jackets looked just alike before realizing she was looking into a mirror. (Yes folks, this really happened).

•Someone sitting in the near empty emergency room for 5 hours to get treatment for an injury. (Good thing there wasn’t a bus accident, or it would have been 15 hours!)

•Many, many people addicted to drugs being denied getting their prescriptions filled for a legal replacement drug because they had never gotten the prescription filled at that pharmacy before. (I witnessed this myself at several pharmacies in two counties.)

Unordinary uses for erasers

Clean piano keys. Use an eraser to remove marks from the ivory keys.

Clean gold. The eraser gently scours gold-plated items such as pens and jewelry without damaging the material.

Fix a wobbly table. Cut eraser to fit the bottoms of the table legs and affix with nails or glue.

Remove scuff marks from floors.

Simply use an eraser.

Prevent framed pictures from tilting or scratching wall. Glue at least two Pink Pearl erasers to the bottom edge of the back of the frame.

Erase finger prints from woodwork. Gently rub with an eraser.

Clean cotton upholstery. Run lightly with an eraser.

Store small drill bits. Twist bits, point first, into a large eraser.

Cruising in the 60s

It seems like a hundred years ago, but it wasn’t.

My sister Sandra, Brenda “Punkin” Hawn Guinn, Mary Hawn Brock, and Carolyn Hawn Galyon put more miles on Roane St. in Harriman than any other females ever did.

Sandra and Punkin were older than us and they had the cars, so me, Mary and Carolyn tagged along with them.

We’d start cruising about dark. We’d start at the Beacon Drive-in just North of the Highway 27 bridge in Harriman. We’d circle the place, then proceed across the bridge back to downtown, and circle Archie’s Drive-In. Next, we’d turn right, and rotate around the Snow King, which was located across the street from Harriman High School.

If gas and money was scarce that night, we’d park at one of the establishments and just watch people circle.

When we really got bored, we’d play Chinese Red light. For all you younguns who don’t know what this is, I’ll explain: Chinese Red light is a game that if you got stopped by a red light, everyone in the car had to change seats. Even the driver. We looked so silly to the older folks as we would jump out of the car, run around it, and jump back in.

Another game we played was Hide-and Seek.

For this, you needed at least two cars. You drove around and found a good hiding spot and sat in your car until the other person found you. You was only allowed to hide on Roane St. or a street parallel to it.

When me and Carolyn got older, we stopped running with the others and found our fun at either the Princess Theater or at the dances at the Legion hall or the high school.

Sandra and Punkin would still pick us up, and take us home as they went.

Those days were full of nothing but clean fun. The only worries we had were making sure we had enough gas to get us home.

My sister, Sandra, has since passed away, but boy, did we have some good, clean fun!

At this time in my life, when I turn 64, I am so grateful, because there's so many of my friends and family who didn't get to see 64-years-old, and so, I'm celebrating for them, too.

Top Country Legends Who Died Before Their Time

Conway Twitty - Age at Death: 59---He broke through with 1958’s rock 'n' roll smash 'It's Only Make Believe.' In 1965, he went country fulltime, giving us hits like 'Hello Darlin'' and 'Tight Fittin’ Jeans.' During his lifetime, he made history by having more No. 1 hits than any artist in history. Conway became ill after a show in Branson, Mo. and died of an abdominal aneurysm on June 5, 1993 at the age of 59.

Dottie West - Age at Death: 58--While on her way to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, the ‘Country Sunshine’ singer found herself stuck on the side of the road when her Cadillac stalled. An elderly neighbor spotted Dottie and offered her a ride. Fearful she was running late, she urged the driver to speed, and he lost control of the vehicle while exiting at the Opryland ramp at 55 miles-per-hour.

West, only 58-years-old at the time, underwent several surgeries but died on the operating table on Sept. 4, 1991.

Marty Robbins - Age at Death: 57--- Marty Robbins racked up a string of hits in the '50s with 'Singing The Blues' and 'A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation).' In May of 1982, Marty was in the Top 10 with 'Some Memories Just Won’t Die.' In that same year, Billboard recognized him with the Artist Resurgence Award. Then, just seven weeks before he passed, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The ‘El Paso’ storytelling legend died of heart failure on Dec. 8, 1982 at 57.

Eddie Rabbitt Age at Death: 56-0-- Eddie Rabbitt started his career writing 'Kentucky Rain' for Elvis and 'Pure Love' for Ronnie Milsap. Soon, he was singing his own smash hits 'I Love a Rainy Night' and 'Drivin' My Life Away.' Consistently recording and touring in the final stages of his life, Eddie kept his battle with lung cancer private. As a matter of fact, only a few immediate family members even knew of his passing until the funeral was over. Eddie, 56 at the time, died on May 7, 1998.

Tammy Wynette - Age at Death: 55--- The First Lady of Country Music died on April 6, 1998. In 1999, Tammy Wynette’s body was exhumed in an attempt to settle a dispute. After no autopsy was conducted and the cause of death was listed as a blood clot, her daughters grew suspicious and filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her doctor and husband/manager, George Richey, claiming they were responsible for her death at the age of 55. The coroner declared that she died of a cardiac arrhythmia.

In May 1999, George Richey was dropped from the wrongful death lawsuit.

Jim Reeves - Age at Death: 40--- Since Jim Reeves first appeared at No. 1 with 'Mexican Joe' in 1953, he placed 46 songs on the Billboard charts before he died in a plane crash in Nashville. More impressively, his widow worked with RCA Records to keep his music alive, and he racked up 33 posthumous hits, including the No. 1 songs 'Distant Drums' and 'Blue Side of Lonesome.' The crooner of 'He’ll Have to Go' was piloting his own plane when he crashed at the age of 40 on July 31, 1964.

Keith Whitley - Age at Death: 33--- Keith Whitley’s star was on the rise when he “drank himself to death” on May 9, 1989. At the time, Whitley was enjoying his third No. 1 single with 'I'm No Stranger to the Rain,' ironically a song about overcoming depression and alcoholism. 'Miami, My Amy' became his first Top 20 hit, leading the way for 'When You Say Nothing at All' and 'Don't Close Your Eyes.'

Whitley was just three years into a marriage with Lorrie Morgan when he died at 33-years-old.

Patsy Cline - Age at Death: 30--- Patsy Cline only had nine songs on the Billboard country charts before her death in a plane crash on March 5, 1963 at age 30. Like Jim Reeves, Cline’s music lived on with several chart entries after her death, including 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Always.' However, she was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973. It is reported that Cline actually had premonitions of her death and revealed them to close friends Loretta Lynn, Dottie West and June Carter in 1962.

Hank Williams, Sr. - Age at Death: 29--- Although he died at the tender age of 29, Hank Williams, Sr. did live to see himself become a major country music star when 33 of his songs hit the charts while he was still alive. However, it seemed like no one at the time would realize the impact his songwriting would have on American music in the years to follow. He was born with a spinal deformity, spina bifida occulta, that would lead to his addiction to painkillers. The lethal combination of alcohol and prescribed drugs ended his life on January 1, 1953.

1. If you tell a bad dream before breakfast it will come true.

16. Never look directly at anyone with a stye because you will get it.

Hints for your plants Ammonia as fertilizer. Watering soil with a mixture of two tablespoons ammonia to each quart of water will not only enrich the nitrogen content of the soil but keep black flies away.

Revive ailing houseplants with Geritol. Give the plant two tablespoons of Geritol twice a week for three months. New leaves should begin to grow within the first month.

Grow seeds. Use cardboard or fiber egg boxes, then plant entire tray; it'll disintegrate.

Longer lasting flowers. Pick flowers during coolest part of day.

Water plants on vacation. Soak soil, place plant and pot (still dripping) in a polythene bag, close bag tightly, place in position to receive indirect sunlight.

Problem with ants?

Keep Ants and Slugs Out of the House Ants and Slugs Won’t Touch Chalk. So, simply draw a line in front of your doorway where you are having problems with these pesky critters and they won’t cross it, meaning they won’t be able to get into your house.

Soothe Insect Bites Dissolve two tablets into a glass of water. Then use a cloth or cotton ball to apply it to the affected area. The red will go down and most importantly, the itchiness will vanish usually in fifteen minutes.

Jerry Derryberry

December 1, 1940 - March 12, 2014 Jerry Neal Derryberry, Sr., age 73, of Kingston, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jerry was born on December 1, 1940, in Jackson, TN to the late Norman Leslie and Bernice Harris Derryberry. The family moved to Oak Ridge in 1943 where his father worked on the Manhattan Project.

Jerry graduated in 1959 from Oak Ridge High School where he was elected “Most Creative” of his senior class. He married the love of his life, Ann McCarty Derryberry, in 1964. His passion in life was his wife and, son Neal and daughter-in-law, Suzanne. He had a great love for the Lord and his church family.

Most of his life he spent training Tennessee Walking Horses in East Tennessee and North Carolina.

Jerry also worked for many years at the former Oak Ridge Chrysler Dealership in Oak Ridge.

He was well-known and respected in the Tennessee Walking Horse community and served this organization in many capacities. He was given the distinguished honor to exhibit Tennessee Walking Horses on three different occasions as a prelude at Tennessee Volunteer Homecoming Football Games.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann McCarty Derryberry; his son, Jerry Neal Derryberry, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Suzanne Collins Derryberry, all of Kingston. Other survivors are brother-in-laws, Marvin McCarty and wife, Pat of Oak Ridge; Colon McCarty and wife, Betty of Clinton; Clayton McCarty of Kingston; Joe McCarty and wife, Valerie of Oak Ridge. Many cherished nieces and nephews and a host of special friends.

The family received friends from 1:00 – 3:00 pm, on Saturday, April 15, 2014, at Central Baptist Church, located at 245 Bailey Road/ Kingston, with memorial service following at 3:00 pm, in the church sanctuary with Rev. Corey Jones and Rev. Charles Campbell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church, P.O. Box 298, Kingston, TN 37763; or to the charity of choice. Online register book can be signed at www.FrakerFuneralHome.net. Fraker Funeral Home of Kingston was in charge of all the arrangements.

The Substitute Organist The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to, at the end of the worship service, ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building.

Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was out and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute.

The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently.

"But you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances."

During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and sisters, we are in great difficulty.

The roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."

At that moment, the substitute organist played "The StarSpangled Banner."

And that is how the substitute became the regular.

This article is disturbing — there is nothing pleasant about crucifixion. However, having an understanding of crucifixion helps us understand what Jesus went through on the day of his death.

When did Crucifixion start?

Crucifixion probably started first with the Persians (what is modern day Iran). Initially, the victim was suspended to keep their feet from touching holy ground. The Phoenicians, traders to many lands, seem to have also acquired the practice and probably spread it to other cultures, including the Greeks.

Alexander the Great (a Greek) introduced the practice to Carthage, where it was picked up by the Romans. The Romans started using it around the time Jesus was born.

The Romans perfected crucifixion as a punishment designed to maximize pain and suffering. It wasn’t about killing somebody - it was about killing somebody in a horrible way. A crucified person suffered the maximum amount of pain.

Crucifixion was also the most disgraceful form of execution. It was usually reserved for slaves, foreigners, revolutionaries, and vile criminals. The only time a Roman citizen was ever crucified was for desertion from the army.

What was flogging?

Flogging, or scourging, was done before every crucifixion. The scourging was intended to bring a victim to a state just short of death. Also, it hurt. A lot.

The whip had iron balls tied a few inches from the end of each leather thong on the whip. Sometimes, sharp sheep bones would be tied near the ends. The iron balls would cause deep bruising, while the leather thongs would cut into the skin. The sheep bones would hasten the process of cutting into the skin. After a few lashes, the skin would be cut through, and the muscles would begin to be cut. Blood loss was considerable, and the pain would probably have put the victim in shock.

What was a typical crucifixion like?

After the flogging, the victim would carry his own cross bar (called a patibulum) from the flogging area inside the city to the crucifixion area outside of the city walls. The crucifixion area was always outside the city, because the process was horrible and disturbing to citizens.

The upright part of the cross (the stipe) was permanently mounted in the crucifixion area. The part that the victim carried was the cross bar, weighing in at 75 to 125 pounds. The cross bar would be balanced on the victim’s shoulders, and their arms would be tied to the crossbar. In this position, if the victim tripped or fell, they could not use their arms to break their fall, and they would likely fall face first into the ground.

The victim was escorted by a Roman guard (probably a centurion and several soldiers), who were responsible for guarding the victim until his death. One of the soldiers would display a sign with the crime written on it.

Once the crucifixion area was reached, the victim would be offered a drink of wine mixed with myrrh to act as a mild pain killer. The drink was a charitable service performed by an association of women in Jerusalem.

The victim would then be nailed to the cross bar. The nails would be driven through the wrists, not through the palms, as these would not support the body weight.

The cross bar would be raised and placed on the upright post, where the victim’s heels would be nailed to the post.

Once crucified, a victim would live for a period ranging from a few hours to a few days. How long he lived depended mostly on how severe the scourging was.

If no one claimed the body, it would be left on the cross to be eaten by animals. The family could, however, claim the body for burial. In this case, a Roman soldier would pierce the chest with a sword or spear to make sure the victim was dead.

What actually kills the victim?

The initial scourging would weaken the victim, cause massive blood loss, and probably induce shock. By the time the victim had carried the cross bar to the crucifixion area, he would be exhausted.

Once up on the cross, the victim would have his body weight suspended by their arms. In this position, it is difficult to completely exhale. The victim could take shallow breaths for a while, but eventually would be forced to push himself up to take a full breath.

At this point three things happen: • The victim's weight is now fully supported by his feet. The nails through the feet would be likely to hit two major nerves running through the area. The result would be excruciating pain in the legs.

• The nails in the wrists would be likely to pierce the main nerve running through the arm. As the victim pushed up to breath, the wrists would rotate against the nail, irritating the nerves and causing intense pain in the arms. Some authorities also believe that the crucifixion position would dislocate the shoulder or elbow. Any movement would aggravate the pain from these injuries.

• The wounds on the victim’s back from the scourging would push up against the rough part of the centerpiece. This would tend to re-open the wounds, leading to more pain and blood loss.

This combination of pain would quickly force the victim to lower himself back down. Eventually, the victim would no longer be able to raise himself up and would suffocate. The shock from blood loss would hasten this process.

In some cases, the victim’s legs were broken to “finish him off.” This would prevent the victim from being able to raise himself up and he would suffocate in a matter of minutes.

Specifics of Jesus’ crucifixion Jesus’ crucifixion mostly followed the standard procedure, although there were some differences. These differences help account for the fact that he died after a relatively short period of time on the cross.

There is a condition called “hemohidrosis” or “hematidrosis” which occurs in people under extreme physical or emotional stress. The blood vessels in their sweat glands rupture and leak blood into their sweat. The effect is one of “sweating blood.” Several authorities believe that this is a plausible explanation for what happened to Jesus.

Although the loss of blood would not be significant, it shows that he was under extreme stress, which would have weakened him physically. Before the scourging and crucifixion, Jesus was beaten by his guards, which would weaken him. In addition, he would have had no sleep that night, and walked back and forth from trial to trial.

Typically, a prisoner carried his own cross to the crucifixion site. The fact that Simon was pressed into carrying Jesus’ cross suggests that Jesus was too weak to carry his own cross.

As mentioned earlier, breaking the legs of a crucified person would cause suffocation within minutes, because they would not be able to raise themselves up to breath.

Again, this was typical crucifixion practice to stab the victim to make sure he was dead before releasing him to relatives.

The “water” that John describes as flowing is probably serous pleural and pericardial fluid — fluid that would build up from shock and blood loss. This fluid would tend to accumulate in the chest cavity and lungs.

WHAT HAPPENS IN HEAVEN WHEN WE PRAY? I dreamed that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. we walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels. My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, "This is the Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received."

I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out petitions written on voluminous paper sheets and scraps from people all over the world.

Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section.

The angel then said to me, "This is the Packaging and Delivery Section. Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them."

I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth.

Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of a very small station. To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, idly doing nothing. "This is the Acknowledgment Section," my angel friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed.

"How is it that there is no work going on here?" I asked.

"So sad," the angel sighed. "After people receive the blessings that they asked for, very few send back acknowledgments."

"How does one acknowledge God's blessings?" I asked.

"Simple," the angel answered. Just say, "Thank you, Lord."

"What blessings should they acknowledge?" I asked.

"If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy."

Household Hints • Doors that won't stay open. Use self-adhering pieces of Velcro! Put one piece on the tip of the doorstop and the other piece on the back of the door! The Velcro will hold the door securely but it's easy to release.

Free up a door that sticks along one edge or the bottom. Temporarily tape a piece of coarse sandpaper in the tight spot then force the door back and forth across it. The sandpaper will remove enough wood or built-up paint to allow the door to swing freely.

Prevent nuts, bolts, and screws from getting lost while you're working. Keep them on a piece of masking tape.

Prevent drill from slipping. Cover mark with adhesive tape and drill through it.

Catch dust when you drill overhead or into walls. Poke the drill bit through the bottom of a small paper cup, or clear plastic container, and hold the cup rim against the wall or overhead surface while drilling.

Do you have water leaking through the ceiling? Immediately drill a small hole to allow the water to drain before it damages the plaster or drywall. Once the leak is repaired spackle the hole and repaint.

Roof shingles. Do roof repairs on a warm day when shingles are soft and pliable. You'll be less likely to crack the shingles as you walk on them or fold them back and the roofing cement will stick better.

Remove ground-in dirt and stains from concrete walks and driveways. Pour household bleach over the stain and let it sit for ten minutes then rinse.

Cut electrical wire without cutting copper thread. Warm rubber with match, then pull off with pliers.

Prevent tight screws. If you rub soap on the thread of a screw before using it, it will be easy to remove at a later stage.

Loosen tight screws. Soak with a couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide or ammonia until screws turn back and forth easy.

Stop leaves from blocking gutter. Place chicken wire over top of gutter.

1 pound ground beef 1 - 14.5 Oz. can tomato sauce 1 - 14.5 Oz. can kidney beans (with liquid) 1 - 14.5 Oz. can pinto beans (with liquid) 1/2 cup diced onion 1/4 cup diced green chilies 1/4 cup diced celery

2 medium tomatoes, chopped 1 teaspoons cumin powder 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 teaspoon black pepper 2 teaspoons salt 1 cup water

Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat; drain off the fat. Using a fork, crumble the cooked beef into pea-size pieces. In a large pot, combine the beef plus all the remaining ingredients, and bring to a simmer over low heat. Cook, stirring every 15 minutes, for 2 to 3 hours.

Red Lobster Cheese Biscuits

1 1/4 lbs. Bisquik 1 teas. garlic powder 3 Oz. freshly shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 teas. salt 11 Oz. cold water 1/8 teas. onion powder Garlic Spread: 1/8 teas. dried parsley 1/2 cup melted butter To cold water, add Bisquik and cheese, blending in a mixing bowl. Mix until dough is firm. Using a small scoop, place the dough on a baking pan lined with baking paper. Bake in 375 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. While biscuits bake, combine spread ingredients. Brush baked biscuits with the garlic topping.

McDonald’s Mac Sauce

1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 tbspoons French dressing 4 teaspoons sweet pickle relish 1 tblspoon finely minced white onion

1 teaspoon white vinegar 1 teaspoon sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt

Combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl. Stir well. Place sauce in a covered container and refrigerate for several hours, or overnight, so that the flavors blend. Stir the sauce a couple of times as it chills. Makes about 3/4 cup.

Olive Garden Alfredo Sauce

1/4 pound (1 stick) butter 1 teaspoon garlic powder 2 cups heavy cream Salt and pepper (optional) 1/2 to 3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese In a saucepan, combine the butter and heavy cream. Simmer until all is melted and mixed well. Stir in the Parmesan cheese and garlic powder. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes on low. Important: DO NOT use store-bought shredded or grated cheese. Preshredded and pregrated cheeses have an anticaking agent in them that can prevent the sauce from setting up.

Optional Cream Cheese Method Use this if the sauce is a little thin. The sauce can be thin for a variety of reasons: not using heavy cream, not cooking at a high enough temperature, and using preshredded or pregrated cheese. If the finished sauce is still a little thin whisk in 2 tablespoons cream cheese until the sauce thickens.

Crayon on Walls or Washable Wallpaper:

Spray with multipurpose lubricating oil. Then gently wipe, using a paper towel or clean white cloth. If mark is stubborn, sprinkle a little baking soda on a damp sponge and gently rub in a circular motion. If lubricants residue remains, dampen a sponge with a solution of one or two drops of mild dish-washing liquid to one cup water. Squeeze out sponge and gently rub in a circular motion. Rinse sponge; lightly moisten with water to go over area; dry with a clean cloth.

Another method is to use a blow dryer. It heats the wax and wipes away instantly. If the color remains behind, like red usually does, wet a cloth with bleach and wipe.

Ooey Gooey Worms

• An earthworm can grow only so long. A well-fed adult will depend on what kind of worm it is, how many segments it has, how old it is and how well fed it is. An Lumbricus terrestris will be from 90-300 millimeters long.

• A worm has no arms, legs or eyes.

• There are approximately 2,700 different kinds of earthworms.

• Worms live where there is food, moisture, oxygen and a favorable temperature. If they don’t have these things, they go somewhere else.

• In one acre of land, there can be more than a million earthworms.

• The largest earthworm ever found was in South Africa and measured 22 feet from its nose to the tip of its tail.

• Worms tunnel deeply in the soil and bring subsoil closer to the surface mixing it with the topsoil. Slime, a secretion of earthworms, contains nitrogen. Nitrogen is an important nutrient for plants.

The sticky slime helps to hold clusters of soil particles together in formations called aggregates.

• Charles Darwin spent 39 years studying earthworms more than 100 years ago.

• Worms are cold-blooded animals.

• Earthworms have the ability to replace or replicate lost segments.

This ability varies greatly depending on the species of worm you have, the amount of damage to the worm and where it is cut. It may be easy for a worm to replace a lost tail, but may be very difficult or impossible to replace a lost head if things are not just right.

• Baby worms are not born. They hatch from cocoons smaller than a grain of rice.

• The Australian Gippsland Earthworm grows to 12 feet long and can weigh 1-1/2 pounds.

• Even though worms don’t have eyes, they can sense light, especially at their anterior (front end). They move away from light and will become paralyzed if exposed to light for too long (approximately one hour).

• If a worm’s skin dries out, it will die.

• Worms are hermaphrodites. Each worm has both male and female organs. Worms mate by joining their clitella (swollen area near the head of a mature worm) and exchanging sperm. Then each worm forms an egg capsule in its clitellum.

• Worms can eat their weight each day.

April Event Leading up to Roane County's Relay for Life April 25, 2014 This will be the 18th Annual Relay for Life & again this year it will held at Roane State Community College on the Faculty Parking Lot. Survivors should arrive by 5:30 p.m. & report to the Survivor's Tent for Registration & their special entertainment, get their t-shirt & lined up for the presentation of the Medallions which are given each year to all Survivors present. The opening ceremony begins at 6:00 p.m. & parking is provided in the baseball parking area across the street from the college entrance.

Golf carts will be available to transport those needed them to the Relay area.

This year there are 30 teams registered at present & campsites will be set up all along the walking track with themes & activities & lots of food to be sold with all proceeds going to the Relay. There will be entertainment in the front staging area including an appearance by Elvis, a “Dude Looks Like a Lady�

Contest, & performance by several groups from opening ceremony until the Luminary Ceremony which begins at dusk.

Here are other important events this month that lead up to this big, fun event of April 25th. Please mark your calendars & plan to participate in ALL of them: April 12 (Saturday) 7 a.m. --10 a.m............. A Pancake Breakfast at Ruby Tuesdays, sponsored by Kingston Kiwanis Club. April 12 (Sat) at Roane State at 5:30 pm..... In the Art Gallery (Rm 0225) a Survivors Reception will be provided by the Relay Committee with good food, door prizes & goody bags. This is for any cancer survivor & 1 caregiver.

The week leading up to Relay, we are encouraging businesses to help advertise & raise funds for our event. Thus the week of April 21-26, 2014 is being proclaimed “Paint the Town Purple� week by the mayors of Rockwood, Kingston, & Harriman. Merchants & businesses will be in friendly competition to see which town raises the most money for Relay by having donation cans in stores, the purchase of purple ribbons for their doors, selling Luminaria bags, having staff wear purple clothing, special purple sales promotions for the week with a percent going to Relay, offering cancer survivors a special discount, decorating store windows with a purple display of their choice, & more. The town raising the most money & the store judged best display of purple will receive awards. Come join the fun for a truly great cause. We're all in this together.

McDowell, Madden Take Wins At Smoky Mt. By; John Griffin

Smoky mountain Speedway kicked off their racing season on March 6th, 7th and 8th.

On the 6th, it was practice, and then at 9:00 p.m., practice closed and they had a pizza party in the pits. Jett’s Pizza of Maryville brought the pizzas for the ones there and Food City furnished the drinks.

On Friday, the 7th, the National Dirt Racing League took to the track with a strong field of cars in attendance to see who would win the 1st night of the 2 night show.

On the first night, in the 40-lap feature, it was Dale McDowell of Georgia leading all 40 laps for an impressive victory.

The win was worth $7,500 to McDowell in his Team Dillon Racer with Chris Madden of S. Carolina 2nd Ray Cook of N. Carolina, 3rd, Billy Ogle, Jr. of Knoxville,4th, Kent Robinson of Indiana, 6th, was Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, and Don O’Neal of Martinsville in 7th.

On March 8th, 48 cars signed in to see who would win the $12,000 for night two.

Scott Bloomquist set fast time with a lap of 15.904 seconds.

The the Feature race, it was Chris Madden taking the lead on lap 44 and going on to win the 60 lap feature. The surprise of the night was Mike Marlar of Winfield who started 10th come up through the field to take 2nd, with Scott Bloomquist 3rd, Jonathan Davenport 4th, Billy Moyer, Jr. 5th, and Dale McDowell 6th.

The next race will be the Ray Cook Spring Nationals on March 29th. East Tennessee Auto Outlet and Old Man’s Garage are the sponsors with $6,000 to win.

PIT NOTES: Work is progressing on the new Atomic, as crews have been putting up guardrails and other work that has to be done.

Atomic Speedway Reunion!

Bob Martin, who built and opened Atomic Speedway in 1970, has scheduled an Atomic reunion on May 16th.

It will be held at the Bearden Banquet Hall with the price being $19.70, which covers the cost of the meal.

Get a Burn Permit

Keep ski goggles from fogging up. Spray the inside of the lens, then wipe clean.

Polish leather shoes. Spray on shoes and shine with a cloth.

Prevent stains on kitchen drain boards. Coat rubber drain board trays with a light application.

Sweep up dust and dirt with ease. Spray the bristles of your broom or mop before sweeping.

Prevent water spots and soap scum on shower walls and doors. Coat the tile walls with furniture polish and wipe clean. You can also use car polish or baby oil.

Make cleaning grease splatters on the wall behind the stove easier. First, clean the painted wall behind your stove. Then spray the entire area with a generous coat of furniture polish and buff well with paper towels. You will then be able to wipe future grease splatters away easily with a dry sheet of paper towels.

Has your sliding glass door stopped sliding? Spray your door tracks with aerosol furniture polish. The wax in the polish reduces friction plus it won't attract dirt.

Repel spiders When the spider trainer for the movie "Arachniphobia" wanted to direct his spiders, he used lemon pledge sprayed on areas he wanted the spiders to avoid.

Burning permits focus attention on the safe use of fire. From October 15 through May 15, anyone starting an open-air fire within 500 feet of a forest, grassland, or woodland must by law secure a burning permit from the Division of Forestry. Permits are not required for burning in containers such as a metal barrel with a ½" mesh screen cover. Anyone needing to burn within an incorporated city should contact city authorities about any local burning ordinances. Many towns and cities have their own burning regulations that supersede the Division of Forestry’s burning permit program.

Permits are free of charge and may be obtained by calling the phone number for the county in which the burning will be done or by filling out the online form (choose option below).

Permits will not be issued on days and in locations if it is considered unsafe to conduct a debris burn.

Rockwood Memories

Old stores in Rockwood By: Ray Collet Hello Readers, As I write this article, the NCAA basketball tournament is in full swing and our Vols are right in the thick of things with a shot at winning the whole thing. GO VOLS...

Maurice Grief reminded me of a game from the 1956/1957 season that is still on record as being the lowest scoring game in Tennessee and possibly the United States.

It sees like every time a group of Tiger fans get together talking sports, this game is always brought up, Coach Tom Pemberton knew that his team would be in over their heads against a much taller Kingston Yellow Jacket squad. The only chance our Tigers had was to keep the ball as long as possible and make every shot count.

Rockwood got the opening tip-off and the team froze the ball as the clock ticked down to about five seconds left in the first quarter.

A shot was fired but it hit the backboard and missed. As the second quarter started, the Tigers again got the tip and again froze the ball until just before the half-time buzzer and again the shot missed.

The score at half-time was Rockwood 0 - Kingston 0.

When the teams came back out to start the second half, the Kingston Yellow Jackets stood back and let Rockwood freeze the ball again. I remember Referee Nick Orlando taking a chair out on the court underneath one of the goals and sitting down for most of the second half. This time, Jim Blye connected on a shot with five seconds left in the third quarter and our Tigers had the lead 2 - 0. Going into the fourth quarter, Kingston got the tip and Glen Keever hit a basket to tie the game. About halfway through the fourth quarter, Kingston started pressing Rockwood, stole the ball and their guard, "Red" Cross scored to put his team ahead 4 - 2. John Ward made a bucket just as the final buzzer sounded to tie the game 4 - 4.

Going into overtime, Rockwood again got the tip, but a traveling violation was called and they lost possession. One of their best all-time players, Gordon Mason hit a field goal to put Kingston in the lead 6 - 4. "Red" Cross hit two free throws and Radford Norman hit one to make the final score, Kingston 9, Rockwood 4.

Here is the way the box score looked from that low scoring game.

Uses for old tires

• Use single rows of tires and use mulch or gravel between rows. You will have easy access to all sides of your plants and will keep weeding to a minimum.

• When doing any of these projects, it's okay to use tires of different sizes. Exposed spaces can be used to tuck a plant into.

• Set blackberries, raspberries, and other brambles out in rows of tires—one plant to a tire. They will benefit from the same "raised bed" principle and will be easier to prune back and to mulch.

• If you can place a few tires in a row along a wall or garden edge, try adding a heavy wire cattle panel or simply a length of woven fence wire as a trellis for vining plants to climb. You can save a lot of space by growing beans, cucumbers, squash, gourds, and other climbers this way.

• When arranging three or four tires in a square or triangle, make use of the space between the tires instead of just mulching it. Just fill it with compost and add another plant or two. You will gain another square foot or so of good growing space.

• Go commercial. With a serious rubberized garden, it would be possible to supply every restaurant and grocery store for miles around. Organically grown fresh garden vegetables are always in demand.

If you go big and create a growing patch of 50 to 100 tires, you can produce hundreds of pounds of vegetables and some good income. For example, with tomatoes selling for 50 cents a pound or more, you can make good money from your "tired" tomato patch. Starting them in the tires will help you to get them to marketable size earlier than other locally grown competition.

Using old tires is a great way to recycle. It's also a wonderful way to make the most of a small garden plot and generally increase your garden yield. Try some of these ideas, and I'm certain you'll see good results.

Need a plumber? Here’s some advice

1. Working unlicensed and uninsured Unlicensed and uninsured tradespeople usually charge less. But you’re taking a big risk hiring them.

Hiring a plumber? Ask to see identification, a state license and proof of current insurance 2. Estimating a job sight unseen How can a plumber realistically estimate his price for a job he hasn’t seen? He can’t. Don’t accept a quote without an in-person inspection.

And get it in writing.

3. Lowballing the bid A surprisingly cheap bid should make your antennae perk up.

Something’s probably wrong.

4. Padding the estimate Another approach is to pump up the bid with inflated prices and unnecessary items. You can spot jacked-up prices by getting several competing estimates.

5. Showing up uninvited Call the police if a “plumber” knocks on your door and tries to convince you to hire him. This is often a tip-off to fraud or to a thief checking out your home’s vulnerabilities.

6. Using bait-and-switch tactics Bait-and-switch is a deceptive marketing practice: A company advertises one product or service and then tries substituting something else, or an inferior version.

When you obtain bids, get the make and model of parts or equipment included, to compare with the final product.

7. Pushing you for cash A plumber may ask you to pay under the table in cash and forgo a receipt — maybe with the offer of a discounted price. It’s a sign he’s cheating on his taxes. It’s your decision, of course, but how fair is this to the rest of the taxpayers? Also, a worker who is dishonest in one area may well be dishonest in others.

8. Bringing in extra workers Occasionally, a plumbing company may send out more workers than are needed for your job. It’s a way of charging extra for a one-person job.

If your job is a complex one, a second plumber may truly be justified. So just ask, when you order the work, how many plumbers will be coming, how long the work should take, the hourly rate charged and any other fees.

9. Charging high rates for the first hour Many service providers have a minimum charge for the first hour on the job. Nothing wrong with that. It takes them time and money to get out the door.

But if your job is a small one and the plumber finishes before the hour is up, ask them to take care of other small jobs to fill out the hour.

10. Pushing you to pay up before the work is done It’s reasonable for a plumber to ask for a down payment of up to half of the estimate to cover parts and give assurance that you’ll pay up.

It’s not reasonable to ask you to pay the full bill before the job is completely finished and you are satisfied.

Here's a trick to relax a stiff neck: A stiff neck is usually due to poor circulation and slowed lymph flow to muscle tissues. To combat it, use "contrast hydrotherapy" - meaning a quick blast of hot, then cold water. That'll get the blood pumping again.

So in the shower, first run hot water over your neck for 20 seconds to increase blood flow, then switch to cold for 10 seconds to constrict blood flow. Alternate three times, always ending with cold.

Blowing out an egg to decorate

Decorative eggs are a popular Easter tradition, but most of us want to make sure the contents of the egg have been “blown” or removed before they're decorated. After all, no one wants their pretty dyed or decorated egg to go rotten while it sits on the table.

Here’s a quick guide of how to pierce a hidden spot on the egg and blow out its contents. Be warned: expect a few egg casualties that break and don’t make it to decoration stage.

What you need: • eggs • a scalpel • bowl • a wooden skewer or long needle Gather your materials; work with delicacy to pierce egg at both ends; use skewer to break up the yolk; blow out contents of egg.

Gently swirl the point of your scalpel into the end of the egg, pushing as you go slightly, until it pierces.

Repeat at other end but continue to widen the hole at the other end by swirling the scalpel around so it chips away at the sides. Make it large enough to just insert the skewer.

Insert the skewer and jiggle it around a little to break up the yolk.

Place your mouth over one end, with the other end over a bowl; gently blow into the egg. It might take a few puffs before it starts to come out, but once it gets going it will all come out with a few blows. If the yolk appears stuck, shake the egg and try the skewer again.

Now hold a finger over the bottom hole and place the top one under running water so the egg catches a little water. Shake it around a little and blow out again.

Leave to dry and then they’re ready to decorate.

Mother, Interrupted If I Could Turn Back Time

If I could get into a time machine and travel back 4 years, I would have so much advice for myself about being a brand-new mom. I would also probably make some heavy stock investments in Facebook and flying cars, but that’s not the point.

Life as a new mom might have been less stressful if I had realized that babies aren’t made of porcelain, or any other super-fragile substance. Or if I had known to take naps whenever my little one napped. I didn’t understand the difference between the “I’m kind of hungry” and “I have terrible, crippling gas” cries, which caused a lot of stress and a little hair loss (on my part).

And although I’m embarrassed to admit it, I didn’t even leave the house—at all--for the first month of my daughter’s life because I was terrified some hooligan would sneeze on her or expose her to a weird allergen. In retrospect, the weirdest thing she was being exposed to was me.

Becoming a mother was an unexpected thing for me. I didn’t plan for it and I certainly didn’t know what I was doing at the time. However, I like to think that no matter how much you prepare for having a baby, you’re not really prepared until you’re already doing it. That’s how it was for me, anyway. The moment I saw the plus sign on the pregnancy test, I started building my arsenal of maternal and prenatal knowledge. I bought books, spent hours on pregnancy websites, and asked every mom I knew for advice. I was more than a little afraid I would fail at being a mom, so I tried to prepare myself as best I could.

It wasn’t my fault that all this preparation still wasn’t enough. The second you actually lay eyes on your very own live human infant, you lose all previous child-rearing knowledge and are unable to do much besides smile at their cuteness and maybe cry a little bit. Okay, a lot.

So, if I could somehow defy physics and the laws of nature and talk to myself circa 2010, here’s what I would say: Remove spots from rugs or carpets. Squirt shaving cream on stain, Relax. You’re going to be a good mom! Molly is going to be happy, healthy, and not as breakable as you think. It’s okay to take her out in public—just carry hand sanitizer if you’re anxious about germs. scrub, and wash with water.

Clean upholstery. Apply shaving cream sparingly to stain and rub If she won’t stop crying, and you’ve exhausted all the other options, she probably has gas. They make drops for that, by the way. And while she’s taking all those newborn naps, you better catch some Zzz’s gently with a damp cloth.

Prevent ski goggles from fogging. Spray the goggles, then wipe of your own. Trust me on that. In the very near future, you’ll be a pro at this mom business. You’ll even feel comfortable enough to write a column about it! clean.

Clean grease from hands. Rubbing shaving cream between your Oh, and by the way, you might want to start saving for Molly’s college fund now. In about 3 years, hands will dissolve grime without water. she’s going to tell you she wants to be an engineer.

Does Government Want To Drain Americans' 401(k) Plan?

War On Wealth: As Washington debates what to do about the fiscal cliff that it foolishly created, many potential sources of new revenue will be thrown on the table. One of them is likely to be 401(k) plans.

Retirement is an American's reasonable expectation. We put money into investment plans so that our work today funds our hard-earned leisure of tomorrow. But many in Washington see our investment accounts not as the expressions of well-planned, disciplined decisions but as untapped reservoirs of wealth they can drain to fix the problems that they caused. The tax protection that 401(k)s have now can be wiped out by grasping politicians who refuse to do what's right, which is to severely cut spending. The war on retirement, particularly 401(k)s, is quiet now. But that's because it's a cold war and like the postwar tensions between the East and West, it could erupt at any time into a hot war. One group of retirement plan professionals is warning that the hostilities might be closer than many of us think. The American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries launched on Monday, according to Reuters, "a media campaign intended to educate U.S. employers and workers that the federal government might consider changing the tax benefits of retirement savings accounts." A website set up by the ASPPA advises account holders to tell lawmakers to "keep their hands off your retirement savings" and explains that "Congress needs to reduce the deficit, and part of deficit reduction will most likely be 'tax reform' that increases tax revenue" — the strong suggestion being that Washington is coming after Americans' 401(k)s. If the ASPPA were alone in issuing its warnings, it could be written off as the hyperbole of an isolated group. But Washington's lust for Americans' retirement investments is well documented.

President Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, for instance, proposed lowering the cap on the amount workers could place in their 401(k)s without incurring taxes. And nearly three years ago, Newt Gingrich and Peter Ferrara wrote on these pages about the Treasury and Labor departments "asking for public comment on 'the conversion of 401(k) savings and Individual Retirement Accounts into annuities or other steady payment streams.'" "In plain English," said Gingrich and Ferrara, "the idea is for the government to take your retirement savings in return for a promise to pay you some monthly benefit in your retirement years."

More than 60 million American workers have a 401(k) or similar — 403(b) or 457(b) — plan. But taxing these accounts or lowering the amount that can be contributed to them tax-free would do little to close the deficit and cut the debt. Total assets in 401(k)s are roughly $3 trillion. So even if they were seized in their entirety, they would merely retire less than 19% of Washington's $16.3 trillion debt. Taxed at 50%, 401(k)s would narrowly cover the $1.3 trillion deficit that Washington rang up in 2012. Already a large chunk of America's retirement is held in the federal government's hands. Between 1937 and 2009, Social Security took in nearly $14 trillion in payroll tax revenue. In all but 11 of those years, the government collected more than it spent on benefits.

Yet despite all the surpluses, the Social Security program is in financial trouble and Congress needs more revenue to fix it, just as it is looking for more of other people's money to avoid the fiscal cliff plunge. Don't think for a minute that 401(k)s aren't on the table as a part of the solution. And when they are served up in front of hungry politicians, they can be quickly devoured. Harriman Middle School Student Serves as Senate Page March 10, 2014 – An 8th grade Harriman Middle School student, Jonathan Whaley, served as a page in the State Senate for the 108th General Assembly. He was the guest of local State Senator Ken Yager (R-Kingston).

Yager said page duties consist of anything from making copies, running errands within the Capitol building, to distributing legislative information to members of the General Assembly. The student pages report to the Chief Clerk of the House and Senate.

Jonathan is the son of Chris and Cindy Whaley.

Country trip

One day, a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”

“It was great, Dad.” “Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.

“Oh yeah,” said the son.

“So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.

The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden, and they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden, and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard, and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on, and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.”

The boy’s father was speechless.

Then his son added, “Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are.”

Report from the State Senate

Senate Transportation Committee approves legislation to help repair Tennessee bridges March 5, 2014 -- Legislation that would return millions of dollars to taxpayers in the form of bridge infrastructure improvements was approved by the Senate Transportation Committee on Wednesday.

The County Bridge Relief Act of 2014, sponsored by Senator Ken Yager (R-Harriman), changes the way Tennessee currently manages its State Aid Bridge Grant Program to make it easier for communities to access state funds to upgrade, repair, and rehabilitate bridges that have fallen into disrepair over the years.

“This legislation unlocks local money that has been sitting unused for a number of years to help aid communities with important bridge infrastructure projects,” said Senator Yager, who is Chairman of the Senate State and Local Government Committee. “This will be a tremendous help, especially to our poorest counties, which have a very difficult time meeting the current match required to access these funds.”

Currently, in order to receive funding through the Bridge Grant Program, a 20% local match must be made by local governments.

However, because many localities cannot afford the match, a large percentage of the bridge funding set aside by the state has gone unused. Senate Bill 1679 reduces this local match percentage to only 2%. In addition, it allows local governments to match the rate by using in-kind services as approved by the Commissioner of Transportation.

“This gives road departments the opportunity to invest sweat equity to satisfy the program’s requirements,” added Yager. “By doing so, it unlocks local money that has been sitting in unexpended county balance funds for a years that is needed to make repairs and upgrades to our state’s bridges.”

The bridge grant funds are distributed by county. The 2013-2014 statewide total of unexpended balance funds for all Tennessee counties, pending local matches, is $9.54 million. Yager said the state’s portion of unexpended balances in the 12th Senatorial District includes $103,388 in Campbell County, $50,211 in Fentress County, $50,211 in Morgan County, $50,211 in Pickett County, $50,211 in Rhea County, $74,476 in Roane County and $109,068 in Scott County.

“I am very pleased we found a viable solution that will move us forward in improving our bridges,” added Yager. The bill now moves to the Senate floor where it could be heard on final consideration as early as next week. It is set for final action in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

Is the Bible the Inspired Word of God?

By Jason Carlson and Ron Carlson During a question and answer session at a recent speaking engagement, a university student asked me, "Why do you believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God?" Now this is a very interesting question, and probably one of the most important questions any Christian could ask themselves. What is so special, so unique about the Bible that Christians believe it is literally the inspired word of God? In answering this student's question, I encouraged him to consider the following facts about the Bible. First, the Bible is not just one single book. This is a more common misconception than many people realize, especially with people who do not come from a Judeo-Christian background. Rather than being a single book, the Bible is actually a collection of 66 books, which is called the canon of scriptures. These 66 books contain a variety of genres: history, poetry, prophecy, wisdom literature, letters, and apocalyptic, just to name a few.

Second, these 66 books were written by 40 different authors. These authors came from a variety of backgrounds: shepherds, fishermen, doctors, kings, prophets, and others.

And most of these authors never knew one another personally.

Third, these 66 books were written over a period of 1,500 years. Yet again, this is another reminder that many of these authors never knew or collaborated with one another in writing these books.

Fourth, the 66 books of the Bible were written in 3 different languages. In the Bible we have books that were written in the ancient languages of Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic; a reflection of the historical and cultural circumstances in which each of these books were written.

And finally, these 66 books were written on 3 different continents: Africa , Asia , and Europe . Once again, this is a testament to the varied historical and cultural circumstances of God's people.

Think about the above realities: 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1,500 years, in 3 different languages, on 3 different continents. What's more, this collection of books shares a common storyline - the creation, fall, and redemption of God's people; a common theme - God's universal love for all of humanity; and a common message salvation is available to all who repent of their sins and commit to following God with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength.

In addition to sharing these commonalities, these 66 books contain no historical errors or contradictions. God's word truly is an amazing collection of writings!

After I had shared the above facts with this student, I offered him the following challenge. "If you do not believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, if you do not believe that the Bible is of a supernatural origin, then I challenge you to a test, I challenge you to go to any library in the world, you can choose any library you like, and find 66 books which match the characteristics of the 66 books in the Bible. You must choose 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1,500 years, in 3 different languages, written on 3 different continents. However, they must share a common storyline, a common theme, and a common message, with no historical errors or contradictions." I went on to say, "If you can produce such a collection of books, I will admit that the Bible is not the inspired word of God." The student's reply was almost instantaneous, he emphatically stated, "But that's impossible!"

It truly is impossible, for any collection of human writings. However, the Bible passes this test. The Bible contains 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1,500 years, in 3 different languages, on 3 different continents, with no historical errors or contradictions. The entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, bears the mark of Divine inspiration.

The next time you encounter someone who asks you why you believe the Bible is the inspired word of God, try sharing this challenge with them. Better yet, don't wait until you're asked, just go ahead and share this challenge with a friend today. You don't even have to mention the Bible up front, just ask them if they think it would be realistic to assemble such a collection of books. After they say, "But that's impossible!" you've got a ready-made opportunity for sharing the truth of God's word with somebody!

Walking the dog

How can you make your dog walks easier?

1. Make sure you are your dog’s leader. This sounds easier than it actually is but it extends much further than just dog walking. This is not an exhaustive list but, for example, never let your dog through a doorway in front of you, consistently correct any behavior you don’t like, don’t let your dog eat without your permission and only allow him to eat when he is calm and submissive.

2. Always walk in front of your dog at all times but especially when out walking. Correct your dog when he steps out of line and pulls the lead tight, let the lead slacken then give it a corrective tug and then let the lead slacken again.

3. If possible, walk more than one dog at a time. Dogs always walk much better in a pack but again, you must use calm assertive authority and never let any of the pack assume what should be your position as leader.

4. Make sure your dog’s collar fits well to keep him safe and make sure you have control of him at all times. If your dog does not walk well on a lead consider using a harness or a Halti Headcollar to give you more control.

5. Make sure you have everything to hand during your walk so that you feel calmer and more organized. Start off your walk on a good note by not having to frantically run around beforehand collecting everything you need. DOOG have designed an award winning Walkie Belt, which is great, especially for summer walks or when out running. It will give you both hands to control your pack and has pockets for everything you’ll need, such as doggy bags, hand wipes, treats, phone and keys. It even has clips to attach the lead while cleaning up after your pooch!

6. Some dogs, especially working dogs, will feel much calmer and walk better when they are given a job. This will also make the walk more effective at draining your dog’s energy.

7. If your dog is well motivated by food then consider Clicker Training to teach him to heel and stay by your side during your doggy dates.

8. Make sure that your dog has a dog ID tag and is microchipped.

Not only are ID tags required by law but they’ll also give you more peace of mind while your dog is off lead. The best way to exercise most dogs is to let them off lead and allow them to run. Aerobic exercise is great for them and will make them much more content, but you also need to be sure that your dog is well trained in recall.

Find a treat that your dog absolutely loves to use for recall training and practice this command, a lot!

9. If you’re walking for long distances, your dog is doing a lot of aerobic exercise or it’s a warm day, you’ll need to take water to keep you both hydrated. Lots of pet stores now have travel water bowls for ease of carrying while you’re out and about.

10. If you have to walk early in the morning or late in the evening when it is dark make sure your dog wears some reflective gear, such as a reflective collar or coat, so that he can be seen by drivers.

Cats of either sex seem to love to urinate on comforters and duvets (dogs too!). Even though you wash it they go and do it again!

The reason that they repeat this awful habit is because they can still smell the urine. My tip is to include a large bottle of malt vinegar into the main wash. After washing you won't be able to smell the vinegar but your pet will and it will put them off. This method will also work on any area where cats or dogs tend to urinate such as carpets.

What not to give your pet

Mineral Oil NEVER give your pet Mineral oil! It is made from petroleum. It suffocates the skin and should never be put on the skin OR ingested.

If the mineral oil is ingested into the lungs, it will be there for life and will cause problems. This can happen very easily in very young hand fed kittens, pups and all mammals.

Macadamia Nuts The nuts cause bloat in dogs and it can be fatal.

Garlic Garlic and it's relatives, onions, leeks shallots and chives are all bad for dogs and cats. They contain an ingredient called thiosulphate which causes hemolytic anemia. The symptoms include bloody vomiting and/or diarrhea. It is a nasty painful death .

Medicine If your pet has a tummy ache or is just plain sick, never give them human medicine!

Got Milk?

Don't feed your cat cows milk. It will give your cat a case of the runs. You can give kitties either half and half or canned evaporated milk without problem. Neither of them contain lactose which is what gives kitties the runs. Either choice is far more economical than the "kitty milk" now sold in the pet food aisles.

Grapes & Raisins Another little known toxin to dogs and cats is actually grapes and of course, raisins. It was only discovered/decided a couple of years ago that they can actually cause anemia in these animals.
