Once in the parking lot of a local jewelry store and again at a local pawn shop. The officers were very kind and in both instances letting the suspects go after learning it was only The Roane Reader delivery van delivering the papers. Walking to school As most of you know, my early school years was spent at Fairmont School.

If anyone of you don’t know where that is, it is the school on the hill behind where Clayton Homes is now located in Emory Gap. It was a good school, with teachers who cared about their students, as well as their own morals and reputations.

Our teachers dressed in their best clothes. Men teachers wore a suit and tie, and female teachers wore their best dresses or skirts and blouses. No female, not even the students, wore pants, unless you wore a skirt over them, (which we did on those freezing winter days) Speaking of cold, we all walked to school, and yes, it was uphill-not both ways, but getting there on a icy, cold morning was rough.

I will say, that on mornings when the temperatures was in the single digits, Daddy or my uncle J.B. would heat up the car, and fill it up with kids, so we wouldn’t freeze to death walking to school.

Back in those days, the cars were so big, you could pack ten to fifteen kids in them.

That I remember, the school only used two school buses. One brought kids from the Cardiff area, and the other from Ash Cabin Road, and Martin Hollow. Very few kids were driven to school by their parents. Most of their Dads worked, and their Mamas didn’t drive, and besides, you didn’t just jump in your car and go places.

Times were tough, and you saved all you could. So, we walked.

Most kids took their lunch to school, or either walked home to eat.

Mama would always make me a peanut butter and banana sandwich, and would put either an apple or a banana in there with it. She would give me 2 cents to buy milk with. I remember the small, waxed, paper cartons with the paper straws. Boy, that was the coldest milk you could get. I loved lunchtime.

When I was in the fourth grade, Mama let me walk home for lunch.

I walked down the hill, then took a shortcut by Milsaps, (behind where the first WalMart was in Emory Gap) crossed the creek in the backyard, ate lunch, or dinner as we called it then, watched the game show Concentration on TV, then headed back up the hill to school.

When I attended grammar school, there were no clothes with labels, or symbols advertising what brands you could afford. The girls wore hand-me-downs, and the boys wore blue jeans that had to be rolled up. Everyone was poor, but like I have repeatedly stated, we didn’t know we were poor--because everyone was.

10 Things to Do with Old eyeglasses Recycle them. Pop out the glass lenses and put them in a glass recycling bin. If the frames are metal or plastic, you can recycle those also, if your city offers those recycling services.

Donate them. Many charities, such as the Lion's Club, collect glasses to give to people in need who can't afford them. Ask your eye doctor if he knows of such a charity, or simply give them to a thrift store such as Goodwill. You could also ask the director of a nearby nursing home or retirement center if they are in need of glasses for their residents.

Save them. Glasses make a great accessory to many costumes.

Remember Harry Potter? Children all over the world were clamoring for glasses on Halloween. Include them in your daughter or granddaughter's stash of dress-up clothing.

Hand your old glasses down. If they are simple reading glasses, chances are someone in your family could use them after you've graduated out of them. Ask around with your family and friends.

Use them again. If you like the frames, ask your local optical shop to switch out the lenses for your current prescription, or make them into sunglasses. Alternately, if the prescription is good but the frames are outdated, simply purchase new frames.

Make your old glasses into a work of art. Be creative. Attach a pair of glasses to a pot for a plant, and glue a nose and a mouth underneath them.

Get silly. Put your old glasses on your children's snowman. It will be the best looking snowman on the block.

Growing Up In Harriman (1930-1945) Part IV

Boys Will Be Boys Tight Eye, Acorn Head, Nick, G.A., B.D. Near the L & N railroad depot, which was just across the tracks from my house, was a lumberyard with several 15-foot high stacks of cut lumber. Climbing to the top of the stacks was a challenge to 7 & 8 year old kids. This was another favorite play area. One day a couple of us decided to try smoking a “roll your own” cigarette made from a plant we called rabbit tobacco. We became very dizzy and almost fell off one of the lumber stacks. Needless to say we didn’t try that again.

Another use of the dirt areas to the back of the house was for mumblety-peg, spinning wooden tops, marble games, yo-yo competition, playing the jew’s harp, playing the harmonica, leap frog and flying kites.

My friends- Tight Eye, Acorn Head, Nick, G.A., and B.D. - all had small two blade pocketknives and competition was serious. Mumblety-peg was a boy’s game in which a jackknife must be tossed from a number of positions so that it always landed upright with a blade stuck in the ground, the loser having to draw a peg from the ground with one’s teeth.

A game with different size wooden tops was used competitively to try and knock over the tops of other players. The marble game was even more competitive. Different players used small and large marbles and even ball bearings called “steelies”. A large or medium size ring was drawn on the ground and two players placed a set amount of marbles within the circle. The purpose was to have your marble blast as many marbles out of the ring as possible. These were called keepers for the player. If a miss occurred the other player would take a try. The game would last until the players won all the marbles. This game was sure rough on the knuckles as the play marble was placed between the first finger and thumb and flipped with the knuckles on the ground.

Another dare devil challenge was to cross the RR trestle on the outskirts of Roane Street and jump off the trestle into the Emory river. These were mostly older boys who could swim really well. I never tried that jump, as I was too young and too scared.

Near my house on Crescent Street, which was located very near the railroad tracks, my pals and I would put pennies on the RR tracks to see how much damage would occur to each penny.

On Siluria Street just west of the hosiery mill was a nice house with a watermelon patch. During the night of the ripe season boys would try to sneak into the patch and grab a melon or two. The owner had it already figured out though. He loaded his shotgun with grains of salt instead of buckshot pellets so as not to really hurt someone if they were hit by his high shots.

Boys will be boys and things we did were often dumb. Once G.A. and I walked up the railroad tracks to the junction where we dared each other to walk across the RR trestle, which crossed the Emory River.

Little did we realize that an oncoming train would catch us in the middle of the trestle. Fortunately every few yards a small ledge existed for 55 gallon barrels of water, in case of fire on the wooden cross ties.

Enough room on each ledge allowed us to hang on for dear life, as we were well clear of the train engine and cars on the shaking ledge. Needless to say we never tried that again.

Totally useless information

These chemicals have been known to people interested in medicine for centuries.

One of the first and most influential physicians, Hippocrates, wrote about a bitter powder extracted from willow bark that could ease aches and pains and reduce fevers as long ago as the fifth century B.C. In the 1700s, the scientist Reverend Edmund Stone wrote about the success of the bark and the willow in the cure of the "agues," or fevers with aches. With a bit of chemical detective work, scientists found out that the part of willow bark that was (1) bitter and (2) good for fever and pain is a chemical known as salicin.

Duct Tape

No topic in the history of metallic-colored adhesives has been as hotly debated as the exact name of duct tape. "Duct tape" sounds like "duck tape," which of course makes people think it's called "duck tape," when in fact it's called "duct tape". The original name of the substance was "duck tape."

At any rate, go back to WWII, when "duck tape" was invented.

History has given us many reasons for the original name, but basically it refers to the tape's ability to repel water, much like a duck's feathers. Now, its "modern" name is duct tape. The tape was renamed as such because it was often used to seal (you guessed it!) ducts. However, upon extensive research it was found that duct tape, though frequently used to seal ductwork, should never be used to seal...ductwork. Duct tape is actually an extremely unsafe substance to rely on for such a project--in fact, California has completely banned the stuff for building. But, here’s some great ideas to use your duct tape for: 1. Hanging posters.

Practical Uses For Salt

Boiling Water – Salt added to water makes the water boil at a higher temperature, thus reducing cooking time (it does not make the water boil faster).

Peeling eggs – Eggs boiled in salted water peel more easily.

Poaching eggs - Poaching eggs over salted water helps set the egg whites.

Testing egg freshness – Place the egg in a cup of water to which two teaspoonfuls of salt has been added.

A fresh egg sinks; a doubter will float.

Prevent browning – Apples, pears and potatoes dropped in cold, lightly salted water as they are peeled will retain their color.

Shelling nuts - Soak your nuts in salt brine overnight and they will crack out of their shells whole. Just tap the end of the shell with a hammer to break it open easily.

Preventing sugaring – A little salt added to cake icings prevents them from sugaring.

Washing spinach – If spinach is washed in salted water, repeated cleanings will not be necessary.

Crisping salads – Salting salads immediately before serving will keep them crisp. Lettuce and spinach can be prepped and stored in a salt water bath in your fridge. They will remain crisp and clean. Just rinse and serve!

Improving boiled potatoes – Boiled potatoes will be given a fine, mealy texture by sprinkling with salt after draining, then returning them to the pan and shaking them back and forth quickly to get rid of the excess moisture.

Crispier fried potatoes – Soak potatoes in salt water for several hours before you use them. This will help to “leech out” some of their starch content.

Why have I never heard of this?

Dolores “Dolly” Stewart Scott, age 64, of Harriman passed away Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She was born August 23, 1948 in Harriman, Tennessee.

She was a member of Trenton Street Baptist Church in Harriman. Dolly was caretaker of her parents for several years and worked for the N.C. DOT as an Engineer before that time. Dolly loved the Lord and satisfied His purpose serving others. She is preceded in death by her mother, Imogene Stewart and sister, Donna McKee. Survivors: daughter, Angela Matthews & husband, Al of Raleigh, NC, father, Dan F. Stewart of Harriman, brother, Dan F. Stewart, Jr. & wife, Leslie of Hickory, NC, several extended family and friends. Fraker Funeral Home of Kingston was in charge of all the arrangements.

Household Hints

 To make veils or doilies look new or stiffer place a sheet of wax paper over the item before ironing.  Add grated lemon or orange rind when you are preparing apple sauce at home. Just stir it in when you add the sugar after cooking the apples.  If lime deposits have stained glasses, jars or vases just pour milk in them and let sit until the milk sours. Empty and wash and the lime deposits will disappear.  To keep granite pans and dishes from rusting out on the chipped places, paint the chipped areas with aluminum pain. It really works.  When cleaning your oven, set a small dish of household ammonia in the oven overnight. Next morning it can be cleaned without any scrubbing, as the fumes soften the scorched spots so that they can be easily wiped off.  When painting woodwork cut strips of old newspapers 3 to 4 inches wide, wet them and then stick them on the floor or wall along the woodwork to be painted and you won't mess up the other surfaces with paint. When through remove the paper strips and enjoy the nice job you've done.  Display maps on a handy roll-up window shade. Fine for a study or child's room or a classroom and you can always roll them back up out of the way.  Keep a pair of heavy canvas work gloves near your home freezer chest. Slip them on when retrieving or rearranging frozen foods in the freezer to protect your hands from the cold.  You don’t have to buy glass cleaners and paper towels to clean your mirrors. Just some vinegar and an old newspaper is all you need to keep your mirrors shining as new. Your house will look cleaner if the mirrors are clean.  Does your oven get used every day? Someday if you’re not using your oven, give it a quick spray of oven cleaner and keep it like that till the next day. Before you turn on your oven the next day, give it a quick wipe down. The baked on stuff comes off much easier than ever.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes HATTIE SHILLINGS

Easy, 15 minute meals Easy French Dip Sandwiches 4 hoagie rolls, split lengthwise 1 lb. thinly sliced deli roast beef 10.5 oz. can beef consomme 8 slices provolone cheese 1 cup water Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Open the hoagie rolls and lay out on a baking sheet. Heat beef consomme and water in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat to make a rich beef broth. Place the roast beef in the broth and warm for 3 minutes. Arrange the meat on the hoagie rolls and top each roll with 2 slices of provolone.

Chicago Style Hotdog 1all-beef hot dog 1 TBSP chopped onion 1 poppy seed hot dog bun 4 tomato wedges 1 TBSP yellow mustard 1dill pickle spear 1 TBSP sweet green pickle 2 sport peppers relish 1 dash celery salt Bring a pot of water to a boil. Reduce heat to low, place hot dog in water, and cook 5 minutes or until done. Remove hot dog and set aside. Carefully place a steamer basket into the pot and steam the hot dog bun 2 minutes or until warm.

2.Place hot dog in the steamed bun. Pile on the toppings in this order: yellow mustard, sweet green pickle relish, onion, tomato wedges, pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt. The tomatoes should be nestled between the hot dog and the top of the bun. Place the pickle between the hot dog and the bottom of the bun. Don't even think about ketchup!

Mediterranean Bagel Snacks 2 TBSP roasted garlic-flavored hummus 2 Plain Bagels, split and toasted 4 thin slices deli roast beef

2 TBSP drained jarred roasted red peppers cut into strips 2 red onion slices 1/2 cup packed baby arugula leaves Spread 1 1/2 teaspoons hummus on each bagel half. Divide the beef, pepper strips, onion and arugula between 2 bagel halves. Top with the remaining bagel halves. Cut each bagel into 8 "bites" and secure with toothpicks.

You have had 75 years to get it right and it is broke. d. War on Poverty started in 1964. You have had 49 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each year and transferred to"the poor" and they only want more. e. Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965. You have had 48 years to get it right and they are broke. f. Freddie Mac was established in 1970. You have had 43 years to get it right and it is broke. g. The Department of Energy was created in 1977 to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. It has ballooned to 16,000 employees with a budget of $24 billion a year and we import more oil than ever before. You had 36 years to get it right and it is an abysmal failure.

Butter Replacement - Most recipes that use butter can be cooked with peanut butter instead. In cookies and cakes this can make a wonderful and subtle taste difference. Next time you are making fudge brownies, try using peanut butter instead – it will be like eating a huge Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. You can also stir peanut butter into a sauce instead of butter to give it a nutty finish.

Mousetrap Bait - Mice are not particularly fond of cheese – so it is strange that it is the first food people go for when they are baiting their mousetraps. What most people don’t know is that mice prefer peanut butter – how this has been proven I do not know, but the fact that peanut butter is so much cheaper than cheese, makes this tip a very handy and frugal one. So next time you need to bait a mouse trap, don’t bother loading it with camembert or 5 year aged cheddar, stick on some trusty peanut butter.

Price Tag Removal - Despite the major advances in science in recent years, no one seems to have managed to invent a label that can be removed easily without leaving any glue behind. Fortunately, we have peanut butter. Rub some of the tasty spread on the label glue and rub with a cloth – it works brilliantly.

De-fish the house - If you have ever fried fish, you will know that it leaves behind a rather unpleasant fishy smell in the house. To help eradicate the smell, take a tablespoon of peanut butter after you have finished frying the fish, drop it in the frying pan and fry it off for a minute or two. The smell of peanut butter in the house is much more enjoyable than stale fish and oil.

Leather Cleaner - Peanut butter is an excellent cleaner for leather furniture. Just rub a small amount on and work it in in a circular motion. Remove with a buffing cloth and there you have it! The caveat to this tip is peanut-butter smelling furniture. To avoid that you might want to mix a little perfume oil in it – but not too much. Also, if you do add the perfume, make sure you don’t mix up your jars or you will end up with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that tastes like mouth wash.

Gum Remover - While it doesn’t happen quite so often to us adults, children often end up with gum in their hair. This would normally be followed up by a lot of tugging and pulling with a comb to remove it, and the eventual chopping of the locks. But what most people don’t realize, is that peanut butter is a perfect “gum remover” – not only will it remove gum from hair, but it will remove it from carpet and any other object that is tainted with the chewy stuff. Just rub some peanut butter into the gum and you can wipe the whole mess off with a cloth.

Shave With It - Believe it or not, peanut butter makes a great shaving gel. Just apply it like you would apply the gel, and shave as normal. It works just as well and anyone that has bought a container of shaving gel will know, it is a lot cheaper. The end result is a very smooth shave and, as a bonus, the oils in the peanut butter are very good for your skin, so you don’t need to spend even more money on moisturizer for your legs or face.

In talking with Chris Corum, who is the manager of the motorcross we talked about in previous issues, the new Atomic that is going to be built is still a go.

Chris told me that an engineer had been up there and had laid out the new track, and now track owner Doug Sopha is waiting on the state permits so he can break ground.

Look for the track to hopefully be back racing at the new Atomic Motorcross by late spring or early summer.

The D&R Racing Team out of Kingston has a new driver by the name of Steve Cassebolt. They have already won the Bama Bash, which paid $16,016 to win, and he ran 2nd last weekend at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap. We wish the team a very successful season.

Mother, Interrupted: Anniversary in the Noog

By: Debra Carpenter You know those awesome vacations you go on with the love of your life when your child is safe with the grandparents all weekend? No? That’s okay. Most parents probably have trouble remembering the last time they got to do that. If I couldn’t remember it, there might be cause for concern, considering we took a trip like this just last weekend. My husband and I got to get away to Chattanooga and celebrate our anniversary. Since our daughter stayed with grandparents both nights, the only responsibility we had was representing Middle Tennessee (I should really look into becoming an ambassador) and refraining from jaywalking. That kept us in check, alright.

We had an interesting concept for our anniversary trip: we would camp out the first night, go hiking, explore the area, and generally enjoy nature. This is something we loved to do before having a baby and we don’t get to do it enough these days. The second night, we made reservations for a highly rated Inn on Lookout Mountain, the Sky Harbor Bavarian Inn. We made sure to book the suite that came complete with champagne and a Jacuzzi. After a night of sleeping on the ground and shivering nonstop, we got to sleep on the mountain in a big, comfy bed, soak in the Jacuzzi, and enjoy our balcony’s panoramic view of the river and city. While I enjoy mud under my fingernails as much as the next guy, I think it’s pretty clear which night we enjoyed more. Sorry, nature.

The campground we stayed in turned out to be extremely family-friendly. We saw tons of kids walking around and playing. At that point, I felt like we should have brought our daughter along. But does anyone bring their children on anniversary trips? Plus, it’s hard to get any good hiking in when you’re traveling at a 2 year old’s pace. You know what I mean. You’re walking, and you finally make it 3 feet without interruption or slowing down. Then—“Mama! Look! Grass!” You acknowledge that there is, in fact, grass there. As you continue walking—“Oh! Look! Tree!” …“Another tree!” And before you know it, it’s getting dark, and you’re still only 20 feet from the trail head. Grocery shopping with toddlers is similar.

Since Chattanooga is where we spent our honeymoon, it was the perfect destination for our 3rd anniversary trip. We spent a little time downtown, a little time on the Mountain, and a lot of time together. See, I firmly believe that parents just operate better when they’ve had a wee little break from the wee little ones. They need that special one-on-one time to reconnect and remember why they decided to create children in the first place. Maybe a little time to drink champagne in a Jacuzzi while they gaze out at the view of the city and a nearby mental hospital. I’m just saying.

The highlights of our trip: visiting Craven’s House on Lookout Mountain, Raccoon Mountain TVA Pumped Storage Visitor Center (seriously, though!), our Jacuzzi at Sky Harbor, and the time we got to spend together. The worst parts of the trip: Hearing my daughter say she did not miss me yet and wasn’t ready to come home (two hours before we came home), the rain on the last day of the trip, and the lack of sleep during our first night’s stay.

We had a fabulous time, and I guess my little girl was just bluffing when she said she didn’t miss me. I got a great big hug and tons of kisses when she saw me. Later, as we were snuggled up on the couch, watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, she leaned over and whispered, “I missed you, Mama. So much.”

How to avoid Spring Cleaning

1. Vacuuming too often weakens the carpet fibers. Say this with a serious face, and shudder delicately whenever anyone mentions Carpet Fresh.

2. Dust bunnies cannot evolve into dust rhinos when disturbed.

Rename the area under the couch "The Galapagos Islands" and claim an ecological exemption.

3. Layers of dirty film on windows and screens provide a helpful filter against harmful and aging rays from the sun. Call it an SPF factor of 5 and leave it alone.

4. Cobwebs artfully draped over lampshades reduces the glare from the bulb, thereby creating a romantic atmosphere. If your husband points out that the light fixtures need dusting, simply look affronted and exclaim, "What? And spoil the mood?"

5. In a pinch, you can always claim that the haphazard tower of unread magazines and newspapers next to your chair provides the valuable Feng Shui aspect of a tiger, thereby reducing your vulnerability. Roll your eyes when you say this.

6. Explain the mound of pet hair brushed up against the doorways by claiming you are collecting it there to use for stuffing handsewn play animals for underprivileged children.

7. If unexpected company is coming, pile everything unsightly into one room and close the door. As you show your guests through your tidy home, rattle the door knob vigorously, fake a growl and say, "I'd love you to see our Den, but Fluffy hates to be disturbed and the shots are SO expensive."

8. Don't bother repainting. Simply scribble lightly over a dirty wall with an assortment of crayons, and try to muster a glint of tears as you say, "Junior did this the week before that unspeakable accident... I haven't had the heart to clean it..."

9. Mix one-quarter cup pine-scented household cleaner with four cups of water in a spray bottle. Mist the air lightly. Leave dampened rags in conspicuous locations. Develop an exhausted look, throw yourself onto the couch, and sigh, "I clean and I clean and I still don't get anywhere..."

PRETEND MUD PIE WITH WORMS

You will need: Chocolate Pudding (two 6 oz packages instant pudding, mixed with milk, according to directions on package, or prepared pudding) Oreo Cookies, crushed (put in bag and crush with rolling pin, or chop in food processor) Gummy worms Terra cotta flower pots (8 mini pots or one large pot, clean and unused) Foil or plastic wrap Plastic shovels (clean and unused), OR plastic, silk, or chocolate lollipop flowers Directions: 1. Line flower pots with foil or plastic wrap.

2. Fill pots almost to the top with pudding.

3. Add gummy worms, so they are half in and half out of "mud."

4. Sprinkle cookie crumbs over the top.

5. Stick a shovel or a flower into each pot.

Dandelion Flower Paintbrush 1. Gather a cloth bag or basket for collecting flowers. Pack a light snack or a picnic lunch to bring along to make the outing an event.

2. Take a walk outside with your mom or grandmother and search for dandelion flowers. They are easy to spot in most back yards and along the edges of fields.

3. Collect a batch to use for the card-making project. Be sure to pluck dandelions at the base of the stem.

4. Set out sheets of 8 1/2 by 11″ recycled laser paper or cut brown paper bags into squares or rectangles. Set out one watercolor set per child and a small glass of water for dipping.

5. To make a Dandelion Flower Paintbrush Card, lightly dip the flower head into water and then into the water color paint. Brush, press, or twirl the dandelion flower across the paper to create a pattern. Experiment with different colors, different movements.

Beeswax candles

(PARENTAL GUIDANCE IS ADVISED) Here’s a great idea to help Mom make something she will really love. Beeswax candles. They are the newest obsession!

Not only is pure beeswax a beautiful golden color, it has a cleansing effect on the air in your home. Beeswax is naturally scented. The scent is great. It's fresh and pretty, but not overpowering... a little bit like honey! Here's how to make them: 1. Supplies: beeswax, jars, candle wick, scissors, and masking tape.

2. Begin by having Mom heat up the wax on the stove in a pot to 140°. You don't want the temperature to exceed 185°. Pour a small layer into the base of a jar and place a piece of candle wick into the center of the jar.

3. Hold this in place until the wax is dry enough to where the the wick stays in place.

4. Next, make an X with tape over the top of the jar, poke a hole through the top and pull the wick through. Fill up the jar with melted wax till the desired height. We filled ours 1/2 an inch from the top.

5. After the wax is completely solid, have her cut the wick so that it's 1/2 inch tall.

6. Let Mom light it, and you can enjoy it with her!

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.

Is The Dow Jones Average Really at a Record High?

In spite of what you may have read, the Dow Jones industrial average did not hit a new high recently as far as the value of money is concerned.

After adjusting for inflation, the Dow was higher in 2000 than it is today. It was also higher in 2007. It would need to rise another 10 percent or so to hit an all time high in real (i.e., inflation-adjusted) terms.

By only watching the price of the Dow Jones Industrial Average does little to inform us about the real health of the US economy.

While the Dow is representative of the stock value or lack thereof, of some of our largest companies, the figures do not necessarily imply that a solid recovery is underway.

When considering other numbers that change over time, it's routine to adjust for inflation. So when people talk about wages stagnating for American households, it means that, after you adjust for inflation, the median wage is roughly the same as it was 15 years ago. If you didn't adjust for inflation, you would say the median wage has risen by more than 40 percent over the past 15 years. But that would be a meaningless, misleading statement.

It's equally meaningless for the Dow. And even if the Dow did hit a real, inflation-adjusted, all-time high, it wouldn't mean much anyway.

The Dow average, drawn out to two decimal places, may seem like some perfectly scientific number, but it's far from it. A small committee selects 30 big companies — I.B.M., G.E., McDonald's, Disney and so forth — and then adds up the price of their stocks. Then the analysts divide it by the Dow Divisor, a misleadingly precise-seeming number formulated to account for things like dividends and splits that right now is about 0.132129493. The resulting figure is repeated throughout the country.

What is troubling is that it ignores the overall size of companies and pays attention to only their share prices. This causes all sorts of idiosyncrasies. ExxonMobil, for example, divides its value into nearly five billion lower-cost shares, while Caterpillar has around 650 million more expensive ones. Therefore ExxonMobil, one of the largest companies in history, puts less weight on the Dow than a company less than a fifth its size. An interesting point is that when a company doesn’t perform it can be swapped out of the Dow and replace with a better performer. So, the Dow of yesteryear is not the same as the Dow of today!

Looking at stock market averages and drawing significant conclusions from them may have been somewhat more justifiable 50 or 75 years ago when monetary stimulation was less extreme. But today, the stock market price gain has been mainly the result of the various quantitative easing that the Fed has carried out.

When the Dow Jones average is adjusted for inflation, it is still below the high that it hit in 2007. But even this is misleading because the market brought about those numbers due to additional intense Federal Reserve pump-priming.

In 2007, market averages were at an all time high and by 2008 the US economy was in ruins. This should be enough to do away with the idea that the stock market itself is an indicator of national prosperity. It is not.

The stock market is easily manipulated by money flows. When central banks generate large money flows via their printing presses, some of this money inevitably finds its way into the financial markets and pushes them higher. The mainstream media then does its best to explain that the financial averages are a sign of recovery.

Today, however, stock averages are more disconnected from underlying economic realities than ever before. One could argue that the Dow currently measures the volume of financial manipulation rather than the underlying health of the economy.

When we look at other indicators to determine economic health, including overall GDP, the employment rate and public assistance programs. Here, the news is far from good.

How people saved money in the old days In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "bring home the bacon."

They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat. Those with money had plates made of pewter.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive...

So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer.

No matter what your purpose is in court on any particular day, there are some steadfast rules that cross all state lines. It doesn't matter what the offense/issue is; be it traffic summons, divorce proceedings or arranging parental visitations.

1. Dress appropriately. Avoid sweat suits, belly shirts, mini skirts, sneakers, low riding pants, anything spandex, jeans, character shirts, (i.e. Tweety Bird, Scarface, etc.) If you do not own a suit or dress clothes, clean, plain jeans with a collar or button down shirt, with shoes or boots work well. You would choose clothing for court, as if you were choosing clothing for a job interview or for attending religious service.

2. Throw your gum/candy away. You don't want to speak to a judge with gum rolling around your mouth.

3. Turn off your cell phone. Turn off your cell phone. You know what? Turn off your cell phone. When a judge hears that phone ring, or sing a song, anything you have to say after that moment will fall on deaf ears. A judge turns off there phone before coming into court, because they are is going to focus on what they are doing. You should return the courtesy.

If you absolutely must have your phone on for extenuating circumstances, put it on vibrate.

4. Be on time. Better yet, be early. It is better you sit and wait then miss a court appointed time. (Bring something to read.)

5. Have all your paperwork with you. Have at least one extra copy of everything, just in case the judge, lawyer, advocate, etc needs a copy. Have your papers in order, in a folder, not shoved haphazardly into your bag or pockets.

6. Be respectful, not just to the judge, but to everyone, whether they are the police/court officers at the courthouse, lawyers, or other people waiting for their case to be called. A court house, whether its Family, Criminal Court or Supreme Court is often a place of tension, emotion, and a place of outcomes. If you are angry and frustrated, kicking benches and punching doorways, swearing and talking loudly on your phone you are annoying at best, intimating at worst. Imagine a battered woman coming in to file an Order of Protection against her abusive husband; she's nervous and upset, and there you are yelling into a cell, stalking around the room. etc. Imagine how she feels. Yes, you may be upset, but you must contain yourself and behave yourself while in the courthouse.

7. It is your Constitutional right to have a lawyer. If you cannot afford a lawyer, tell the judge and she will give you an 18B attorney, which is a court appointed attorney. If you do not meet financial limits required for an 18B attorney, you may ask the judge if she has an advocate resource, which is an organization, (the types differ from state to state and city to city), that can help you find affordable law representation.

8. When addressing the judge use the terms, "Your Honor" or the judge's last name. I.e. Judge Doe. If you need to interject something, say, "Excuse me, Your Honor, if I may..." and wait for their answer. If they indicate you may speak, do so. If they tell you not to, do not argue.

8. Lastly, listen to the judge. Court proceeding can go quickly, so pay attention. If your emotions are distracting you, bring a friend to sit in the back, observe, and even take notes.

If the judge asks who they are, say a friend, who is there only to observe. It is also your right to bring someone in with you, other than your lawyer, be it a friend, pastor, or family member. Speak clearly, and slowly. Answer the question the judge asks you. As long as you are truthful the judge will see that.

Up until this time structural and crash fire trucks were far below the minimum requirements for base fire protection. I kept contacting headquarters and was continually told more fire equipment was on the way. Fortunately, at this time very little air traffic was arriving at U-Tapao due to ramp and runway construction.

When the arrival of the first Strategic Air Command personnel began, I asked for a personal meeting with the new SAC Wing Commander. I went into his office and introduced myself as the Fire Chief. I noticed his name was Colonel White and asked him if he had ever been stationed at Turner AFB at Albany, Georgia. He said he had been there back in 1957-59 as operation officer in one of KB-29 tanker squadrons. I then asked him if one of his daughters had won a first prize in one the Fire Prevention Week contests. He looked surprised and said, “yes�. I told him I had been the sergeant in charge of the contest and I had remembered him. It was quite a surprise for both of us.

I briefed him on the lack of adequate fire protection for the incoming KC-135 and B-52 aircraft. He stated that he had been briefed prior to his arrival that the base had adequate fire protection. I told him what was available and he was shocked. He picked up his “red phone� and talked to his headquarters about our conversation. After a few minutes he hung up and said, “I believe adequate fire equipment will be arriving very soon�.

After I arrived back at my office I received a phone call from my Pacific Air Command headquarters.

They were very irritated about my visit with the SAC Wing Commander. I explained that I kept telling them about my need for additional crash equipment and felt it necessary to explain my shortage to SAC folks, as SAC aircraft were to arrive shortly. Needless to say within just a few days, I started receiving major pieces of crash equipment to support SAC aircraft.

The base was rapidly becoming a beehive of activity. The major civilian contractor had begun construction of 3-story pre-cast concrete dormitories, permanent warehouses, office buildings, aircraft hangars, munitions storage facilities, etc. The runways were completed and ready for aircraft arrival.

Soon large rubberized fuel storage bladders were appearing on one of the huge flight line ramps. These bladders would each contain 20,000 gallons of jet fuel when installed. Little did I know at the time, that intruders would sabotage some of these fully loaded tanks during nighttime operations. As there was no lighting on the ramps in this area, it was very easy for someone to sneak in and slit open the fuel tanks.

The worst part for fire safety was that water supply was limited and the flowing fuel had no place to go except to spread out across the ramp. My fire crews and security police had some nervous moments trying to secure these areas. Fortunately none of these fuel spills ignited.

The time passed quickly as everyone stayed extremely busy, each setting up their areas and preparing for the eventual arrival of the big birds. That day came and all of the sudden the roar of big engines were heard overhead. The quietness of the base was now interrupted with day and night takeoffs and landings of the KC-135 (fuel tankers) and B-52 (heavy bombers) aircraft. Their missions included airborne refueling of combat aircraft and bombing Vietnam targets.

Why in the world didn’t I think of that?

1.If you have ever had to give eye drops to a small child, you know how hard it can be. Ask you child to lay down and close his/her eyes.

Place a small drop on the inside corner of the eye. The drop will slip onto the eye ball as soon as the child opens their eyes.

2. To silence your squeaky hardwood floors sprinkle some baby powder on the squeaky area and sweep it into the cracks. Then wipe the floor.

The baby powder between the boards will act as a lubricant and will stop the annoying noise.

3. Several fires are started every year from clogged dryer vents. You can avoid this by simply cleaning your vent every 3 months.

4. Have company on their way over and you forgot to put drinks in the fridge? Place your drinks in a large pot and cover with ice. Sprinkle 2 cups of salt on top of the ice and then fill the rest of the pot with water. Your drinks will be ice cold within 2 to 3 minutes.

5. Need to open a page in a new tab? Instead of right clicking and selecting "Open in new tab", save time by clicking on the link with the middle button on your mouse. If you don't have a mouse with a middle button you can hold down the ctrl key while clicking on the link.

6. Quit wasting time sorting laundry. Buy 1 laundry basket per family member. Assign each family member a day of the week and wash only THEIR laundry on that day. Once the clothes are dry, place the clothes back into the basket and place in their room. Each family member is responsible for sorting and putting away their own clothes.

7. To reheat pizza without getting the crust soggy, place the pizza in a nonstick skillet. Heat on low until warm.

8. When making deviled eggs, place the egg yolks in a plastic Ziploc bag with the rest of the ingredients. Close the bag and mash everything together. Once everything is well mixed cut off a small tip from one of the bottom corners of the bag and squeeze the contents into your egg white. Just toss the bag once you are done for easy cleanup.

9. Use wet newspaper as a weed block. Place a layer on the ground and build your raised bed on top of it or layer the stuff around your plants and cover with mulch. Weeds can grow through some of the store bought weed presenters but not wet newspaper.

10. Keep an eye out for gifts for friends and family every time you go shopping. Buying gifts throughout the year will save a lot of time and stress when birthdays and Christmas rolls around.

11. Don't have time for exercise? Try double tasking. Do squats while you brush your teeth. Push-ups while waiting for the tub to fill up. One handed bicep curls while stirring sauce with the other hand.

12. If you have already sealed an envelope and realized you forgot to put something in it, place the envelope in the freezer for a couple hours.

It will pop right open so you don't have to get another envelope.

13. After cooking fish boil a little vinegar in a pot and let it boil. The nasty fish smell will disappear almost instantly leaving your kitchen smelling clean again.

14. Do you have some conditioner that you bought then decided you did not like it? Use it to shave your legs. Not only is it cheaper than shaving cream, it will also leave your legs silky smooth.

15. If you have some eggs that are about to go bad, or have your own chickens that produce more than your family could ever eat, or they are on sale so you buy way more than you need. Don't just let them go to waste. You can freeze them! You can mix them up and place 2-3 in a Ziploc bag. Lay them down flat in the freezer then stack them upright once they are frozen to save on space. You can also crack a dozen of them into a bowl, beat them (I was told not to freeze eggs unless they are mixed/beaten not sure why but I mix them anyways) then pour them into an ice cube tray. One cube is equal to one egg. Once they freeze. dump them into a large Ziploc bag or freezer safe container.

Simple Question: Why? ►Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are dead? ►Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet? ►Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard? ►Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s: Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June.. However, since they were starting to smell...Brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it.. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water!"

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof...Hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs."There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot......they "didn't have a pot to pee in" & were the lowest of the low.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt.

Hence the saying, "Dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence: a thresh hold.

Rockwood Memories By: Ray Collet

I remember a book, and later on a movie titled "The Iceman Cometh", but the thing that stirs my memory the most is when some of my friends in Clymersville would come by my house riding their bikes and some running, saying "The Goat Man is coming."

Charles "Ches" McCartney led a very colorful life. He was the legendary "Goat Man" who spent many years traveling all across the country, usually walking, very seldom riding , and guiding a huge iron-wheeled wagon laden with pots, pans, pails, car tags from every state and led by a team of goats.

Born in Iowa, he left his hometown in Iowa for New York at age 14. There he met and married a Spanish lady and became a target for her knife throwing act for two years. Sometime in the 1930's he hit the road with his wife and son. His wife, later tired of traveling, returned home to Iowa and Mr. McCartney traveled on with his son.

He was sorta like a prophet, with his long grey beard, travel-worn clothes, spreading the word of God to any man, woman, or child who would listen. From 1930 until 1987, legend has it that he walked more than 100,000 miles, preaching the gospel in 49 of the nation's 50 states. And if the stories are true, he has wrestled a bear, was nearly lynched by the KKK, was once thought to be dead and taken to a morgue, got ordained as a preacher, and got mugged in Los Angeles, California trying to see actress Morgan Fairchild. He supposedly set off in 1985, at the age of 84 to find Morgan Fairchild in Hollywood, only to be mugged upon his arrival. He wanted to take her back to Georgia as his wife.

As I recall, there were goats ahead of the wagon and behind as well as all over the wagon. I remember his long beard and all of the pots, pans, and tubs hanging all over his wagon , and a barrel that was loaded with postcards that he would sell. I can't imagine how he was able to keep all of those goats headed in the same direction and in one lane of a highway, especially some of the three lane highways that Virginia seemed to be loaded with. With the traffic we have today, he probably wouldn't have survived many miles. Just a reminder of a much more peaceful time in many of our lives for those who are old enough to remember it.

Mr. McCartney's son, Gene, was murdered in 1998. He was found slain in the woods behind the bus that he called home. Five months later, Mr. McCartney died in East View Nursing Home in Macon, Ga. He was believed to be 97, but rumored to be 120.

A friend of mine, Bob Adams remembered The Goatman very well. He said that he would camp out in the Glen Alice area near his house, and he would always take him some food. Bob said that he even went up into his wagon once, ( as long as he could hold his breath), Bob also remembered a railroad sidetrack in the area that troop trains and military supply trains would sit sometimes. He remembered getting ice from the train for home made "Iced Tea.' That's about it for this edition of Rockwood Memories. Protect yourself!

1. The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.

2. If a robber asks for your purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you..chances are he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse.

RUN IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! 3. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely won’t be a vital organ.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS, LEAVE. 5. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.

6. ALWAYS take the elevator. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).

7. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

MUHAMMAD ALI'S ADVICE TO HIS DAUGHTER An incident transpired when Muhammad Ali’s daughters arrived at his home wearing clothes that were quite revealing.

Here is the story as told by one of his daughters: “When we finally arrived, the chauffeur escorted my younger sister, Laila, and me up to my father’s suite.

As usual, he was hiding behind the door waiting to scare us. We exchanged many hugs and kisses as we could possibly give in one day.

My father took a good look at us. Then he sat me down on his lap and said something that I will never forget.

He looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Hana, everything that God made valuable in the world is covered and hard to get to. Where do you find diamonds? Deep down in the ground, covered and protected. Where do you find pearls? Deep down at the bottom of the ocean, covered up and protected in a beautiful shell. Where do you find gold? Way down in the mine, covered over with layers and layers of rock. You've got to work hard to get to them.”

He looked at me with serious eyes. “Your body is sacred. You’re far more precious than diamonds and pearls, and you should be covered too.”
