Tri-Bolism at La Villette Architecture University

Tri-Bolism at La VilletteLa Villette, Paris, France Architecture Project

Tri-Bolism at Laviette is a focus on circulation and program managment within the new design. La Villette is currently an architecture university located in Paris, France. But before this, it was an industrial building used as both a factory and warehouse. These past programs contributed to its strange layout, and yet even stranger layout for a university.
The name “Tri-Bolism” stems from three things. The first, being “tri” coming from the latin word for three. For this design, I ended up dvideding the school into 3 unique parts, dividing the programs into each sections based on volume and noice creation. The second part, “bolism”, comes from the architectural term Metabolism. Although this focuses more on megastructures and their abilitiy to “organically” adapt to change over time, I focused more on creating a structure’s circulation to flow like the human body.
When put together “Tri-bolism” becomes a double entendre for the word Tribalism. Tribalism refers to the state of something or someone being organized into different groups, which is exactly what was done with this structure.

The school has around 1700 students, and less then 5000 sqm of floor space. This is why I felt it was important to focus not only on program layout, but also utilizing the floor area so that students can feel free and comfortable while in class or walking around school.
Entrance / Exit(Exsisting Structure)
Main Entrance
The university currently is a chaotic mixture of programs squeezed into a tiny space, The thin halls pass directly through classrooms and there is no main interior core door which forces students to pass between classrooms outside even in times of bad weather conditions.
Due to the current layout flaws, I decided to reshuffle the programs, taking great consideration for each function. I seperated this programs into 3 categories, Public/Social,
Education/Learning and Private/Study.
Avenue De Flandre (Busy)
<---Streets--->Rue Barbanegre St. (Calm)
The universities learning core (classrooms, lectures, etc) are located in the center of the complex so that no matter where you might be, the students have easy access to their target.

Because of the University’s Main front entrance, I decided to put the louder and more active programs towards the front of the building. This entrance also opens up to the busy street were many students grap lunch on a dailiy basis.
Lastly, “quiet zone” is located near the rear of the university, backing up towards a residential street. The programs located here include, individual student rooms, storage and cleaning closets and a research laboratory.

Circulation
As one walks deeper into the structure, from the social/- public section to the private/study section, the main hallway slowly pushes back away from the exterior corridor. This subconsciously drives the students to reduce their noise levels and become more introverted allowing for a quiet area matching the programs in this section.

Lighting
I created large slits , which evenly distribute lighting to the lower floors and hallsways. Because of the building regulations in France, the south side of the building had to be set back 6 meter from the preexisisting structures. In order to ensure light reaches to back hallways of the building, this appeared to be a great choice because it also leaves voids on each floor opening up many rooms, On top of this, Most of the facade is glass, letting even more natural sunlight into the rooms, because when one studies, it is much healthly to study in a well lite room.
