Saturday, October 6, 7 am–3 pm The semi-annual Somersett garage sale is here – time to clear out your summer stuff and make way for fall! Per Somersett Owners Association, this is one of just three community-wide garage sales this year.

If you would like to have your Somersett home listed on the map, please email robin.bolson@fsresidential.com with your name, street address, and phone number or stop by the concierge at the Club or call 787-4500. To be included on the map, all submissions must be received by Tuesday, October 2. Play the Tom Kite-designed Championship Country Club Course All Somersett Residents are welcome to play the Championship Country Club Course four times per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $70 per player (in season) and $45 per player (off season, November–March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents three days in advance at 787-1800, ext. 2.

Men, please remember our dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies, no denim, no spaghetti-strap tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear, such as golf or tennis shoes, is required.

Driving Range

Tuesdays through Saturdays, 8 am–6 pm Sundays (Closed Mondays), 8 am–5:30 pm Somersett residents are encouraged to utilize the driving range at the country club. The SOA/country club agreement allows for complimentary usage from the north side of the range. Please check in with the attendant, provide identification as a resident and sign the usage sheet. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult. We will provide shuttle service every 20–30 minutes during operating hours May through October.

Access to the turf range, putting green and newly renovated chipping green is available for $10 per person per day. Pay at the golf shop prior to usage.

GOLF TIP: Consistency

A

ll of us would like to be more consistent in hitting better golf shots. When we instructors ask students what their biggest challenge is, the number one answer we get is lack of consistency.

Consistent golf requires a consistent thought process and routine. Consistent golf also requires a commitment to good fundamentals. The better your fundamentals, the more consistent you will be. Get coaching to help you improve.

Here are a few ideas to help you become more consistent: • Make good decisions and play your game.

• Assess as many variables as you can about your upcoming shot, such as wind, uphill, downhill, cold temp, hot temp, pin location, trouble around green, size of green, width of fairway, etc.

• Range time prior to play can help you play to your day’s tendencies.

• Do not make decisions in accordance to what your all-time best shot was with a particular club.

• Play golf NOT golf swing and play to your ability.

• Don’t try shots you can’t hit yet.

• Golf is a target game while golf swing is a process.

• Work on your golf swing on the driving range (or other practice facilities), but play golf on the golf course ... target, target, target!

MC Believe in Education A VISION WORTH CELEBRATING

T

The MC Believe in Education 5K Cervantes reading to children. and Fun Run, which marks its seventh year on September 23, attracts young and old, fit and not so fit, people who participate every year and first-timers, all supporting a common cause.

The “MC” in the event’s name and its inspiration is former Somersett resident Michele Cervantes, a beloved teacher who lost her battle with cancer in 2010. Michele taught at Jessie Beck and Rollan Melton elementary schools, where she was known as a wonderful teacher who truly cared about her students. A group of Michele’s friends – Kim Devine, Jackie Griffin, Kim Greene, Bonnie Hughes and Traci Dean, along with her husband, Ken Cervantes – created MC Believe as a way of paying tribute to Michele’s lifelong passion for learning. “MC Believe is all about Michele’s vision of seeing kids grow and get a great education,’’ says Kim Devine. “It’s a sense of community and giving,’’ adds Jackie, “and putting faith in our future – in our kids.’’

Organizers say that despite it’s sad origins, MC Believe is a joyful occasion. They even dubbed the midway point of the 5K “Happy Hill,” a spot at the top of the Boulders where runners’ and walkers’ spirits are boosted with music and water, most of all, the knowledge that the course is all downhill from there.

But even with the positive atmosphere, emotions sometimes bubble up.

“On the day of everybody gets a little choked up, says Kim Devine. “Just seeing The organizers of MC Believe in Education, everybody out there, some who knew Michele and some who didn’t and they’re all grateful from left, Kim Greene, Bonnie Hughes, for what we’re doing. We always go out on the deck and see them take off down and Kim Devine and Jackie Griffin (not pictured, around the lake. It’s really amazing!”

Members must check in to the facility upon entering and have their picture taken to program into the system. Members may be turned away if they cannot provide valid ID.

Alcoholic beverages may be purchased from the Club. Members and their guests are not allowed to bring their own alcoholic beverages onto the premises, including the pool area and Canyon Nine.

No alcoholic beverages will be sold or served to any person not permitted to purchase the same under the laws of the state of Nevada or be sold for offpremises consumption. The Club reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to refuse service to any member or guest who appears to be intoxicated.

RSVP Policy

Please remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund.

No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up Fee The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Guest Fees: $10 adult; $8 junior Members may bring up to four guests per household at one time. Members must accompany guests at all times.

Guests will not be permitted on Labor Day, September 3.

KIDS’ CORNER POLICY REMINDERS

• Kids’ Corner will only accept children 2 to 6 years of age. All children must be registered by the parent for Kids’ Corner prior to their first use of the room. Registration forms are available at the concierge desk or online at mysomersett.com.

• Parents with children who are not bathroom independent must remain on Club premises at all times when their child is in Kids’ Corner. This includes such activities as playing tennis, aerobics, using the fitness room, and swimming or during a special Club function.

• For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday.

• The room operates on a six-to-one ratio, with a maximum of 12 children allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Reservations may be made online at mysomersett. com seven days in advance.

• All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked in their child within the fifteen-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the wait list.

• No-shows will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club.

Cancellations must be received by 8 am on the day of the reservation.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Mission & Purpose Reno Bike Project is a non-profit community bicycle shop and resource for the Truckee Meadows committed to creating a nationally recognized, cycling-friendly community through education, cooperation and advocacy. The organization is built around the belief that the bicycle is the world’s greatest, most utilized mode of transportation and that every individual, regardless of age, gender, race, or class has a right to afford, maintain, and enjoy one.

Since our inception in 2006, RBP has grown from a basement operation to a full cycling community center and advocacy group. RBP’s current and permanent home is at 216 E. Grove St., open to the public 38–50 hours a week. We are constantly striving to achieve our mission of getting more people on bikes, and last year alone we distributed over 1,930 bikes back into the community through our shop and various programs. Our public workstations that provide affordable access to the tools and expertise cyclists need to maintain their own bikes, and our customers logged over 1,600 hours of workstation time in the past year.

Our educational programs include “Ladies Night” every Tuesday night, and “Dan’s Night” every Wednesday night, and a 9-week “Bicycle Repair Class,” offered quarterly on Thursday nights. Outside of our community bike shop, RBP engages people through our Major Taylor, Biggest Little Commuter, and FutureCycle Programs, which bring the message of the bicycle to the people; to engage, educate and empower them to be the change they want to see in the world. RBP also hosts many annual events promoting cycling and cycling culture which include community rides, the We HeArt Bikes Art Show, Bike Week Pancake Feed, Bike Swaps, and provides a Bike Valet at various public events.

AQUATIC RULES POOL RULES 1. Use of the pool is restricted to hours when lifeguards are on duty.

Swimmers are asked to use caution at all times when utilizing the pool area.

Any incident should be reported to a lifeguard immediately.

2. Children using flotation devices must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children under the age of six must be closely supervised by an accompanying adult.

3. Children wearing diapers must have vinyl pants over the diaper and under the bathing suit. The Club reserves the right to ask a child be removed from the water if he or she is not wearing vinyl pants.

4. Proper bathing suits are required for swimming. No cut-off shorts or thongs allowed.

5. Please shower before entering pool.

6. No diving in any area of the pool.

7. No glass containers of any kind permitted on the pool deck.

5. Only one person at a time is allowed to go down the slide, excluding a parent and small child as described above.

6. Please walk up the steps and make sure the catch pool is empty before going down the slide.

7. Riders must go down on their back, feet first.

8. No flotation devices of any kind are permitted on the slide, including those in bathing suits.

9. No goggles, sunglasses, hats or any object that may fall off into the water is permitted on the slide.

10. No diving from the slide into the catch pool upon exiting the flume.

11. Lifeguard instructions must be obeyed at all times by members and guests for maximum safety.

SPA RULES 1. Children 12 years of age or younger who wish to use the spa must be supervised by an adult.

2. It is recommended that children under 12 years of age enjoy the spa no longer than 10 consecutive minutes at a time.

3. Extended exposure to hot water or vapors may be detrimental to the health of elderly persons and persons with heart conditions, diabetes or high or low blood pressure.

4. People with skin, ear, genital or other body infections, open sores or wounds should not use the hot tub due to the possibility of spreading infection.

5. Do not ingest water by mouth as this can cause infection and illness. Parents are to warn children not to allow water in their mouths.

6. The heat of the hot tub water speeds up the effects of alcohol and can cause sleepiness, dizziness and unconsciousness.

7. Horseplay, splashing, swimming and diving are not permitted in the spas.

WHY SOMERSETT? Jaci, my partner of 19 years, and I were in the first 100 people to live in Somersett. As soon as we heard about the development, we rushed to buy a home here and even had to go into a lottery to purchase. We love it here! Natural surroundings, trails (I was on the trails committee to help develop them), and parks. Our beautiful home backs up to open space. The people are friendly. We love our neighbors! FALL LANDSCAPING TIPS

s we move into fall, cooler temperatures are headed our way. With that in mind, it is time for you and your landscape to adjust to the changes. There are many fall landscaping tasks we recommend performing to help your landscape transition from warmer to freezing temperatures.

FALL PLANTING Fall is one of the best times to plant because the temperatures drop a bit and new plantings are less likely to experience shock and heat stress symptoms. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow while still gaining the benefits of 6 to 8 weeks of routine irrigation before winterization is needed. Unlike the spring, when rain and unpredictable weather changes can make working with soil almost impossible, fall typically offers more stable weather for planting.

Plus, the crisp, cool air makes for a more enjoyable experience while planting.

Planting a mix of evergreen shrubs and trees ensures your landscape has color and texture during the winter months. While deciduous trees and shrubs lose their foliage during the winter, evergreens keep their leaves or needles year-round. Some examples of evergreen trees and shrubs are Mugo Pine, Blue Spruce, Photinia, Euonymus and Austrian Pine.

The use of ornamental grasses and selecting deciduous plants with brightly colored bark is another great way to create interest and contrast during the winter months. For example, Red Twig and Yellow Twig dogwoods have beautiful red and yellow branches and when combined with evergreen trees, the contrast is striking, even in the winter months.

Our area has very few choices when it comes to annuals for the fall and winter months. However, you can still create a colorful, festive look in your pots and annual color beds by using a combination of evergreens and annual color. For example, you can combine a Dwarf Alberta Spruce, kale and pansies. And, if we have significant moisture over the winter months, you can enjoy them all the way into early spring. Pots are a great way to be creative and incorporate seasonal items such as gourds, pumpkins, aspen branches or even hay bales and dried corn husks. You can then incorporate evergreen clippings and pine cones over the winter months.

If you want to incorporate spring bulbs into your landscape, fall is the time to plant them. Planting bulbs such as tulips and daffodils are a great way to enjoy early spring color.

FALL FERTILIZATION While fertilization requirements differ between plants, adding nutrients can promote plant life. Iron, sulfur and higher amounts of phosphorous are fundamental nutrients for plant growth in the fall and are available in many fertilizers. To really know what your property needs we recommend soil

testing, but a couple of broad-spectrum products to consider are as follows: • 24-6-10 is high in nitrogen but it is slow-release product. It will keep your turf greener for longer in the fall.

• 6-6-24 XB is a quick-release, potassium-based product. The potassium will help root growth over the winter.

• Another alternative to consider is to top dress turf and amend soil in planters with humus.

FALL PRUNING In the fall and winter, trees enter a dormant stage, halting their growth. Due to growth inactivity and dropping temperatures, this creates an ideal setting for pruning.

Anytime between late fall and early spring is best for pruning trees because it promotes the tree’s current health and sustains future tree growth. And, because deciduous trees lose their leaves, it is a good time to perform canopy-pruning tasks. Look dead wood and branches that cross or rub against each other.

When it comes to your grasses, perennials and shrubs, it is good to let them go as long as possible before their final pruning. This is because the leaves are the part of the plant that take in energy from the sun and carbon dioxide which are two vital ingredients in the process that the plant uses to produce food called photosynthesis.

Allowing this to continue late into the fall promotes healthy root growth and give the plant the energy it needs to make it through the winter and flush out in the spring.

WINTERIZING Without proper preparation, freezing temperatures might damage your irrigation system. To minimize this risk, you’ll need to winterize your irrigation system. Typically, in this region, we recommend performing this task in October/November. In some of the higher elevations, such as Somersett, you may need to winterize as early as October, depending on temperatures. You want to make sure the temperatures have dropped to the point where your turf and plants are naturally starting to go dormant, yet you don’t want to wait too long and risk freeze damage.

There are several methods to drain your irrigation system and it is important to research the option that is most appropriate for your system.

Irrigation systems are installed using one of the three types of water removal: manual drain, auto drain or blowout. If you don’t know your system type, it is best to use the blowout method. Northern Sierra Endurance Training (NSET) Northern Sierra Endurance Training (NSET) Mission: NSET’s mission is to provide a venue for individuals to meet other people training for endurance events in the Truckee Meadows. By promoting the benefits of endurance sports, like walking and running, in the Truckee Meadows, NSET hopes to improve individual’s health and performance as a result of a positive, supportive group association.

NSET is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to promoting physical fitness through activity in the surrounding community. The organization strives to foster an environment of fellowship and good will and exemplify key attributes of being friendly, professional and morally supportive of other athletes’ goals and achievements, no matter their level of fitness.
