Somersett Golf and Country Club PGA professionals are proud to donate their time to your little ones! This clinic will be held at the country club’s Short Game Arena. Please sign up with golf shop staff at 787-1800, ext. 2.

Somersett residents are encouraged to utilize the driving range at the country club. The SOA/country club agreement allows for complimentary usage. Please check in at the golf shop. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult.

Play the Tom Kite-designed Championship Country Club Course

We kindly ask that you refrain from winter activities on both of our golf courses during the winter season. We do not allow tubing, tobogganing, sledding, saucering, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, etc. on either course. Damage caused by these activities becomes apparent in the spring and playing conditions are greatly sacrificed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

© THOMAS McCRORY

All Somersett residents are welcome to play the Championship Country Club Course four times per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $70 per player (in season) and $45 per player (off-season, November-March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents three days in advance at 787-1800, ext. 2. Men, please remember our dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies, no denim, no spaghetti-strap tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear, such as golf or tennis shoes, is required.

GOLF TIP: Putting By Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf

A

s we head into winter and temperatures prevent many of us from heading out to the golf course, it is a great time to work on some easy putting fundamentals in the comfort of our homes. I recommend a few simple putting fundamentals: 1) The ball is placed slightly left of center (right-handers) with hands centered slightly forward of the body. The putter shaft should be perpendicular to the ground. 2) Eyes over the ball: You might have to adjust the height of your hands on the putter to accomplish this. 3) The motion of the putter includes shoulders, arms, hands, putter grip and putter head all working at the same tempo. Research shows the best putters adhere to a 2:1 tempo on all length putts. 4) I have found success in stabilizing my lower body by putting a little outward pressure on my knees. The lower body should remain stable with no side-to-side movement. 5) Allow the putter to swing on its natural arc. The putter is not designed to swing on a straight line but rather on an arc. In contrast, a croquet mallet is designed to swing straight back and straight through.

PGA and LPGA tour players have tempos of 62–72 beats per minute regardless of the length of putt they face, which equates to approximately .90 seconds of elapsed time. The “holy grail” of putting tempo is 2:1 as evidenced by most of the great players. This would equal .60 seconds on the backstroke and .30 seconds on the through stroke. This highlights the acceleration through the ball. All of the greats do that. SHORT PUTT = short back and slower through – .90 seconds at 2:1 tempo. LONG PUTT = longer back and faster through – .90 seconds at 2:1 tempo. There are many apps and devices but if you are serious about improving, I recommend the Blast sensor for golf. It accurately measures 11 separate metrics – most importantly tempo.

Need help with your putting this winter? Set up a lesson in our new Short Game Arena here at the country club. Our staff can be reached at 787-1800, ext. 2 or email me at ssmith@somersett.com to set an appointment.

Somersett cares about veterans

A

BIG THANK YOU to Somersett residents who donated some great jackets and clothing for the annual Stand Down held in September in Reno. Stand Downs are typically one- to three-day events providing supplies and services to homeless veterans, such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings and VA Social Security benefits counseling. This year 60+ vendors were there to support the veterans. The Wild Whimsical Women (WWW) joined with the Assistance League to gather, sort and sometimes mend and wash over 700 jackets for this event. Every veteran there who wanted a jacket or two got one. The Care Matters Team distributed over 100 sleeping mats that day also. Project organizer Diane Williams explained that each mat, fashioned from about 700 plastic bags, takes about 65 hours to make. “These mats were made with care and love,’’ she said. The group – about 60 volunteers in total – has been crocheting the mats every week since February at The Club at Town Center and more recently at Aspen Lodge. The WWW is a social group of 150+ members who mostly live in Somersett with a few members throughout Reno. Members enjoy broadening their circle of friends, learning new things about their area and community, supporting each other during good times (and difficult times) and also helping those who are less fortunate throughout the Reno area. Interested in joining WWW? Email Sharon Slattery at sharonslattery@yahoo.com.

Marriage Story, starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and directed by Academy Award nominee Noah Baumbach. This highly anticipated film will open the festival on Thursday evening, December 5th, at the Incline Village Cinemas. Writer-director Noah Baumbach offers another alternately funny and deeply moving snapshot of a marriage in its final stages. With divorce proceedings in full swing as the film opens, New York City theatre director Charlie (Adam Driver) and LA-bound actress Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) have promised to keep their separation an amicable one, not just for each other but for their young son as well, but hurtful admissions and vicious verbal spats quickly sour those ambitions. As Driver and Johansson deliver rich, layered performances at Marriage Story’s heart, Baumbach surrounds his stars with one of the year’s strongest ensembles—Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Merritt Wever, and Julie Hagerty—as he jumps back and forth through Nicole and Charlie’s relationship to capture a kaleidoscopic, bittersweet tale of lost and found love. The full program for this year’s 5th Tahoe Film Fest will be found on the festival website on or about November 1, 2019. Tickets will be available on-line or at the theater box-office.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

It’s no news that waste can cause serious problems in the world around us. Litter and illegal dumping cost our community thousands of dollars in staff time and equipment to clean up litter and garbage from our parks, open spaces, and public rights-of-way. The indirect costs of litter are also considerable. For example, the presence of litter in a community decreases property values. Litter also has significant environmental consequences. Natural processes like decomposition and biodegradation need water, so in our desert climate what gets dumped stays dumped. When dumped in the desert even sod, trees and all the “natural” green waste one might think is going to break down becomes dry kindling for wildfire season. Wind, weather, traffic, and animals move litter into gutters, lawns and landscaped areas, alleyways and parking structures. Litter near storm drains are also likely to wash into local waterways, with potential for serious environmental contamination, especially when the litter is plastic or hazardous waste material. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) is celebrating 30 years of increasing the quality of life of residents through beautification, advocacy, cleanups, and education! Started

18

in 1989 by a passionate group of community volunteers, KTMB’s history and impact are quite impressive. In the past 10 years alone, KTMB has coordinated 1,169 cleanup events, removed 1,423 tons of trash and 5,711 tires, recycled 101,679 Christmas trees, planted over 7,961 trees and 74,451 flowers, and has educated over 28,000 youth and adult community members! Recycle your Christmas trees Everyone wants to live in a space that is beautiful, healthy and clean, but it takes participation from everyone sharing that space to make it happen. Start by recycling your Christmas trees with KTMB! KTMB’s Christmas Tree Recycling program provides residents with the opportunity to easily keep trees out of the landfill or - as is sometimes seen - our open spaces. Trees are given a second life after they are chipped into mulch and used for park and weed-abatement projects. The mulch is also free to area residents! WHEN/WHERE: Thanks to our volunteers and our partners, residents can drop off their Christmas Trees at the Shadow Mountain Sports Complex in Sparks, Bartley Ranch in Reno, and the Reno Sports Complex every day starting December 26 until January 7, 2020! Check out www.ktmb.org for more information!

Christmas for Veterans

W

ould you like to do something nice for veterans and their families this Christmas? The Wild Whimsical Women (WWW) are once again asking for your help to do just that. Case workers with the Veteran Outreach program have selected needy veterans and families along with a list of their holiday requests. Last year with your donations we supported 150 veterans and their families! We will work with you to select a specific veteran or family and you may purchase everything on the list or just one of their choices. Small appliances can be gently used as long as they are in good condition. Veterans Outreach will happily provide donation receipts. If you would like to help or for more information, please email sharonslattery@ yahoo.com.

COLLECTION BINS IN THE CLUB: HELPING HANDS BARREL: Located in the foyer at The Club at Town Center, the barrel serves as a convenient way to collect gently used clothing, shoes, kitchen items, sheet sets, towels and more for distribution to people in need. Many of you use it often – it always seems to be full!

PAWS AND CLAWS: We also have a Paws and Claws donation box for pet items such as dog and cat food, water and food bowls, toys, leashes and collars, brushes/grooming tools, pet beds and towels. All donated items go to local pet shelters. The Helping Hands Barrel and the Paws and Claws box are checked, maintained and items distributed by the Wild Whimsical Women.

—Somersett’s Annual Food Drive— With the holiday season comes Somersett’s annual Holiday Food Drive benefitting the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Donations will be accepted through Friday, November 22, at the front desk at The Club at Town Center.

Expired or damaged food items cannot be accepted. Items most in need are: • Canned meals: Stews, soups, spaghetti/ravioli (low-sodium preferred) • Protein: Peanut butter, tuna, salmon, chicken, dried or canned beans • Grains: Whole-grain cereal, oatmeal, brown rice, whole-grain pasta • Fruits: Canned (packed in 100% juice or light syrup), dried fruit, applesauce (no sugar added), 100% fruit juice boxes • Vegetables: Canned (no-salt added and/or low-sodium preferred) • Dairy: Shelf-stable milk • Kid-friendly snacks: Granola bars, popcorn, animal crackers, graham crackers • Baby products: Formula, infant cereal, baby food

Be a Santa to a Senior

S

omersett will once again help make the holidays a little brighter for area seniors in need. Starting November 6, the Club at Town Center’s Christmas tree will be adorned with special “bulbs,’’ part of Home Instead Senior Care’s Be a Santa to a Senior program. Each bulb will list the name of an area senior, along with a suggested gift item. If you want to participate, stop by the Club and select a bulb, purchase the item(s) listed, and drop the unwrapped gift(s) and the bulb in the collection bin next to the tree before December 4. Home Instead Senior Care and community volunteers will wrap and deliver the gifts. Watch for more information on Somersett. net and in Somersett Happenings weekly enewsletters. SIGN UP HERE: www.somersett.net/newsletter-sign-up

During November and December our downtown store turns into a Winter Wonderland filled with ideas for holiday decorating from hearth, to table, to tree. Great gift ideas too. Take a trip to Truckee, visit historic downtown and find your way to our store in the Loading Dock building, where the holiday has arrived in style. Mountain Home Center, 10115 Donner Pass Rd, Downtown Truckee, 530-550-8800. Open Sun thru Thurs 10A to 5P; Fri and Sat 10A to 6P. www.MountainHomeCenter.com 29

A Guide to Snow Removal along Somersett Streets and Sidewalks Private streets Snow removal and street sweeping within the sub-associations of the Village and the Vue are the responsibility of the sub-associations. Other private streets within the Association (streets that are behind a gate) will be plowed when there is an accumulation of three inches on the street. Streets will be swept within a reasonable time frame following the last snowfall to clear the streets of sand and debris. Community gates are left open during and after storms to allow equipment to move through the community quickly and efficiently and to avoid accidents involving equipment – or homeowner vehicles – sliding through the gates.

City-owned streets In Somersett, any street that is not behind a gate is a public street, which means that plowing is the responsibility of the city. If you have questions, contact the city at 334-2099.

Sidewalks Homeowners are responsible for maintaining and shoveling the sidewalks adjacent to their property. The Association will plow the common area sidewalks and asphalt trails along the three major parkways (Somersett, Del Webb and Somersett Ridge) if there is still snow on the sidewalks and trails within 48 hours after the end of snowfall.

Report potholes If you spot a pothole on a city-maintained street, call Reno Direct at 334-4636, or submit a request online at https:// goo.gl/DvimMh To report a pothole on an SOA-maintained street behind a gate, call the SOA office at 787-4500, or email soa@ mysomersett.com.
