Play Championship Golf at the Somersett Country Club Course

All Somersett residents have access to playing the championship country club course twice per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $60/player (in season April through October) and $40/player (off season November through March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents three days in advance at 787-1800 x2. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies, we ask no denim and no spaghetti-strapped tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is required. Please be advised we are cart path only November through the month of March.

Building on the success of years past, Stuart Smith and our staff of country club PGA professionals will be instructing this beginner/intermediate class. Whether you are a former golfer looking to dust off your clubs and brush up on your fundamentals or someone eager to learn for the first time, this is an ideal program for golfers at any stage. A typical session will include clinic style instruction as well as time for individual help from instructors. Over the course of each month we will cover all aspects of the game, including full swing, putting, short game and on-course playing instruction. This program will run through the golf season with a projected end date of September 26. If participation dictates, we will add an additional 1 pm class on Saturdays at the height of the season. Master’s Par Three Tournament

Sat., April 11, 9 am shotgun start | $30 adult; $20 junior (under 18) Entry includes green fee, prize fund and a $5 food credit in the SunSett Grille to be used either before or after your round.

We’ve established a wonderful tradition here at the Somersett Golf & Country Club with our own commemorative Masters event. The Masters Golf Tournament is traditionally the start of the golf season, even here in Reno, and our event mimics the one played at Augusta’s Par Three Course on the Wednesday prior to the actual tournament. Everyone in the Somersett community, including country club members and residents, is welcome to participate. The tournament will have divisions for men, women and juniors.

• We will award the top gross (actual score) and net (with established handicap through the GHIN system) scores. Adults with no an established handicap will participate in the Callaway Scoring Division. Junior scoring will be gross only (if participation warrants, we will have age divisions).

• We will offer a deuce pool for all players who make a gross two on a hole. In the event of a hole in one, all deuce pool money will go to those making holes in one.

• We will award closest to the hole on all par threes for men and women. Juniors will fall into the men and women category for closest to the hole awards.

We are approaching Reno Tahoe Audi again to sponsor our event, with the first hole in one on hole #17 winning a a brand new 2015 Audi.

We’ll test your knowledge with a Master’s trivia contest during play. After your round, please join us in the SunSett Grille to watch live coverage of the third round of the 2015 Masters Tournament. Members, please sign up online. Community members, please sign-up with the golf shop staff.

Junior Golf Opportunity The Somersett Golf & Country Club is offering one boy and one girl aged 8–12 complimentary entry into the 2015 Junior Golf Program. Both the men’s and ladies’ Somersett golf associations are sponsoring the enrollment fee of $295 for the season of May through October. If you have a child in this age group who is not a member of the country club and would be excited to participate in this fabulous program, please pick up an application at the country club. The application asks for a copy of your child’s most recent report card and a brief paragraph written by your child explaining why he or she would like to participate in the Somersett Junior Golf Program. This class will help you discover your own painting style while learning about the exciting and versatile possibilities of watercolor painting. LATE PICK-UP FEE The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

GUEST FEES: $10 ADULT; $8 JUNIOR Members are allowed to bring up to six guests at one time for a maximum of ten visits per guest. Members must accompany guests at all times.

ALCOHOL POLICY Alcoholic beverages may be purchased from the Club. No alcoholic beverages will be sold or served to any person not permitted to purchase the same under the laws of the state of Nevada or be sold for off-premises consumption. The Club reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to refuse service to any member or guest who appears to be intoxicated.

• Kids’ Corner will only accept children two to six years of age. All children must be registered by the parent for Kids’ Corner prior to their first use of the room.

• Parents with children who are not bathroom independent must remain on Club premises at all times when their child is in Kids’ Corner. This includes such activities as playing tennis, aerobics, using the fitness room, swimming or during a special Club function. • For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. • The room operates on a six to one ratio, with a maximum of sixteen children allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Reservations may be made online at mysomersett.com seven days in advance. • All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked in their child within the 15-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the wait list. • No-shows will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club. Cancellations must be received by 8 am on the day of the reservation.

The Club at Town Center has a great fitness tool to track personal achievements. Fitassess.com is a web-based fitness assessment program that gives personal trainers the tools to conduct a complete physical assessment for their clients. Tests include BMI, blood pressure, body fat analysis, body measurements, cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility and muscular endurance.

The program compiles these results for a ranking that is compared to national averages, and it also provides a number for a body’s fitness age. This information is useful for determining a starting point and making it easy to set goals. It’s also a means of tracking your overall improvement, which boosts motivation and keeps you focused on your training. No animal shall be permitted out of a structure on a lot unless in a fenced enclosure, nor permitted off a lot unless such animal is under the control of a person by means of a leash or other reasonable physical restraint. No doghouses or dog runs are allowed on any lot, unless such doghouses or dog runs are screened from view by approved landscaping or fencing. Upon request of a lot owner, the Community Standards Committee, in its sole discretion, shall determine whether a particular animal or fowl shall be considered as a permitted pet, whether it is a nuisance, or whether the number of animals or fowl on any lot is reasonable.

Pets owned or controlled by one owner shall not be allowed to defecate or urinate on another owner’s lot without the other owner’s permission, All pet feces must be immediately cleaned up if deposited outside the oot of the pet’s owner, and a pet feces deposited on the lot of the pet’s owner must be cleaned up within a reasonable period of time so as not to be unsightly, unreasonably unsanitary or a nuisance due to smell or foul conditions.

hanks to Plan A, we’re loving life in Reno. When Samuel and I sold our home in Truckee almost 16 years ago, we pledged that when we retired, we would return to the Nevada mountains. But after moving four times in eight years, we changed our mind and decided to make our permanent home in San Antonio, TX. We gutted a house, built onto it and turned it into our dream home. A mere six months later, the company decided to move us one more time, to Dallas. That’s when we looked at each other and said, “It’s time to return to Plan A.” Although not quite ready for retirement four plus years ago, we decided to come to Reno and look for property in the Galena Forest area. Not finding what we wanted, we turned our sights to Somersett and as they say, “the rest is history.” After 18 moves each as adults, we were home, settled, content and ready to build our lives around this community. It still took us about two years to move here permanently but in that time, we made the place our own. And last year, after struggling with my health, I determined it was time to get involved and ran for the board.

So who am I? A happy person. A wife, a mother of one, a grandmother of five, a businesswoman of forty years. A teacher of college students, I’m now helping homeschool my grandchildren through the miracle of FaceTime. I never knew how enjoyable Oliver Twist and Pericles could be after all these years. I’m soon to be a retiree from AT&T after 21 years and over a million miles of airline travel. I love to sew, read, travel and mentor young people. I believe in God, helping people and being kind. Most people would call me a Type A personality, especially when I am passionate about something.

I promise to use that passion and experience in effective project management, creative strategic planning, strong team building and listening first for sound solutions. I am the liaison to the Architectural and Communications Committees and am impressed with the dedication of committee members and staff to follow the Somersett Guidelines and increase communications to homeowners. Pruning of

P

runing shrubs and trees in the fall is generally a bad idea. Fall is a time when deciduous plants store up energy in their tissues prior to fall leaf drop and winter dormancy. This stored energy is then used for the new spring growth next year. Since pruning stimulates new growth, pruning in the fall causes plants to expend energy on new growth rather than allowing them to store it and build up reserves for next spring.

However, since evergreens retain their leaves all year round, and thus photosynthesis provides a constant supply of energy, fall is a terrific time to schedule pruning on a variety of evergreens, from junipers and mugo pines to broad leafed evergreens such as laurels, euonymus and Oregon grape (Mahonia.) NOTE: Spring blooming evergreens such as Rhododendron and Scotch Broom must NOT be pruned in the fall as this removes the next season’s flower buds.

Proper pruning practices should be employed for each species of evergreen. Plants with short internodes (distance between each leaf) such as boxwood and juniper can easily be pruned with hedge shears to create a formal look, although hand pruning to maintain a natural look is a great option. When plants are repeatedly pruned with hedge shears, the leaf density increases on the outer tips of the branches and cuts off light to the interior of the plant. This results in a thick, dense canopy on the exterior and bare, defoliated branches on the interior. As a result, the hedge-sheared plant is locked into a formal shape and the size will get bigger with each successive pruning as the bare-stemmed interior expands over time.

Hedge shearing of shrubs with long internodes and large leaves should be avoided as the natural form and beauty of the plant is destroyed. Hedge shearing of English Laurel or Holly for example, tears and mangles the leaves and renders the plant unsightly. Similarly, shearing of pines, such as mugo pines should also be avoided. When shears are used on mugo pines, unsightly, dead branch tips are often left and needles are cut in two, making the plant look ragged rather than more aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, multiple new stems will form just below the cut, creating an undesired bushiness which makes future pruning efforts more difficult as the interior of the plant defoliates.

The size and shape of shrubs such as mugo pine, Laurel, Oregon grape and such can be easily controlled with hand pruning: and utilizing the fall months is a great way to redistribute some of your staff’s work load from the busy spring months.

Correct hand pruning requires cutting the longest stems back deep into an interior bud or branch union, thus leaving the existing shorter branch tips to create the new size and form. Prune the plant slightly shorter than desired to allow for the spring flush of growth. Utilizing this method should require pruning only once per year and leaves the shrub’s beautiful, natural form.
