The SOA/Country Club agreement allows for complimentary use from the north side of the range. Please check in with the attendant at the range, provide identification as a resident and sign the usage sheet. Juniors MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Access to the turf range, putting green and chipping green is available for $10 per person per day. Pay at the golf shop prior to usage. The turf is available May through October ONLY. In the off season—November through March—residents may utilize the mats on the south side of the driving range—a short walk from the parking lot.

Please note: Our dress code applies to the driving range.

Play the Tom Kite-designed Championship Country Club Course All Somersett Residents are welcome to play the Championship Country Club Course four times per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $70 per player (in season) and $45 per player (off season, November-March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents three days in advance at 787-1800, ext. 2.

Men, please remember our dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies, no denim, spaghetti-strap tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear, such as golf or tennis shoes, is required.

Please be advised we are cart-path-only from November through March.

Winter/Snow Season We kindly ask that you refrain from winter activities on both of our golf courses during the winter season. We do not allow tubing, tobogganing, sledding, saucering, skiing, snowboarding, etc. on either course in the winter. Damage caused by this activity becomes apparent in the spring and playing conditions are greatly sacrificed.

GOLF TIP: Build Your Short Game

W

e are all familiar with the saying “drive for show—putt for dough.”

But the excitement of the long game often overshadows the importance of the short game. The majority of our students seek out help with their long game but when asked about their short game, the response is usually “it is OK.” Long-game mistakes are magnified because of the greater length of motion, increased club length, speed and expectations.

The last is probably the biggest factor. When evaluating long shots, we look at distance, trajectory and curvature.

The short game is most often an abbreviated stroke with the shortest club in your bag—7 iron down through putter. The majority of the time the player succeeds in getting the ball closer to the hole—I guess that is OK. Evaluating your short game with specific measurements would be more enlightening as to how you are actually doing.

Working on technique in the short game will also improve your long game. Hand-eye coordination and solidness of contact will greatly improve. Touch and creativity are also factors in your short game.

How many putts are you making from certain distances? Are

you making half your putts from just inside 8 feet? That length is a 50/50 proposition for professional golfers. Professional golfers are also in the high 90th percentile for putts of 3 feet and under. There are many professionals that do not miss from this distance in an entire year. How many times are you three-putting?

Fundamentally you have three things to get better at—start the ball on your desired line, control distance and predict what the golf ball will do on different severities of slope.

How many times are you getting the ball “up and down” from just off the edges of the green—a chip or a pitch and a putt?

Improving these percentages are critical to your scoring—much more so than the longer aspects of your game. Can you control your distances and trajectory with your different club selections around the green? Can you predict how the ball will react on the green when it lands?

Here at Somersett Golf and Country Club, we have addressed the importance of these simple aspects of the game by opening our new 4,000-square-foot Short Game Arena. Sometimes it’s just getting your reps in that leads to improvement. If you need help, we are happy to assist you in setting up a plan this winter.

FOR CRUSHING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS! 1. BE REALISTIC – The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to NEVER eat your favorite food again is setting you up to fail. Instead, strive for a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding it more often than you do now.

2. BE SPECIFIC – Vague goals won’t work. Map out your strategy before New Year’s arrives. If you want to lose weight, target a precise number of pounds to shed, then set concrete mini-goals and the dates on which you aim to accomplish each of them. Want to save money? Determine the amount you will put aside each month and identify explicit changes in behavior you’ll make to get there, whether that means skipping your afternoon latte or carpooling to work to save on fuel costs.

3. MAKE A PLAN – Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or have that piece of cake. This could mean calling on a friend for help, practicing positive thinking and self-talk, or putting up reminder notes for yourself to look at.

4. MAKE YOUR GOAL PUBLIC – Share your decision to change with friends and family who can offer support when you’re wavering and encouragement when you’re doing well at sticking to your resolution. The best-case scenario is to find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and motivate each other.

5. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS – Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated. Big goals are overwhelming, so sit down and consider the easy ministeps that you can take.

6. REWARD YOURSELF – This doesn’t mean that you can eat an entire box of chocolates if your resolution is to eat a better diet. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. If you have been sticking to your promise to eat better, for example, reward yourself with new fitness clothing or by going to a movie with a friend.

7. DITCH PERFECTION – Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day, and take it one day at a time!

Inclement Weather

Members must check in to the facility upon entering and have their picture taken to program into the system. Members may be turned away if they cannot provide valid ID.

The Club may operate on limited hours in the event of inclement weather. We will do everything we can to open on time and remain open until close. Please call the Club prior to arriving when it is snowing or icy.

RSVP Policy Please remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund. No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up Fee The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Alcohol Corkage Fee Policy Outside alcohol, beer and wine will only be permitted inside of The Club at Town Center (TCTC). No outside alcohol will be permitted on any outside space of the TCTC, including the pool and golf course.

Residents may be permitted to bring outside alcohol (beer and wine only) subject to the following conditions: 1. It must be a TCTC sponsored social event that is on the calendar and scheduled accordingly. Private events cannot have outside alcohol.

2. There must be a staff bartender present.

a. Alcohol must be checked in with the bartender at the time of arrival. b. The bartender must open and pour all beer and wine.

3. There will be a $1 corkage fee for each container of wine and beer (for wine, nothing larger than 750 milliliters per container and for beer, 1-6 cans, nothing larger than 32 ounces).

4. Beer and wine only.

Guest Fees: $10 adult; $8 junior Members may bring up to four guests per household at one time. Members must accompany guests at all times.

For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday.

The room operates on a six-to-one ratio, with a maximum of 12 children allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Reservations may be made online at mysomersett. com seven days in advance.

All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked in their child within the 15-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the wait list.

No-shows will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club.

Cancellations must be received by 8 am on the day of the reservation.

Functional (FX) Fitness This month we are introducing a Functional (FX) Fitness class with Angela from 5:30–6:25 pm on Wednesdays and Fridays. Functional fitness training: Is it right for you?

F

unctional fitness exercises train your muscles to help you do everyday activities safely and efficiently. Chances are you don’t live to exercise. For many people, exercise is a way to maintain or improve their quality of life. And that’s the focus of functional fitness.

Functional fitness exercises are designed to train and develop your muscles to make it easier and safer to perform everyday activities, such as carrying groceries or playing a game of basketball with your kids.

What is functional fitness training?

Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports. While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasize core stability.

For example, a squat is a functional exercise because it trains the muscles used when you rise up and down from a chair or pick up low objects. By training your muscles to work the way they do in everyday tasks, you prepare your body to perform well in a variety of common situations.

Functional fitness exercises can be done at home or at the gym. Exercise tools, such as fitness balls, kettle bells and weights, are often used in functional fitness workouts.

What are the benefits of functional fitness training?

Functional exercises tend to use multiple joints and numerous muscles. Instead of only moving the elbows, for example, a functional exercise might involve the elbows, shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles. This type of training, properly applied, can make everyday activities easier, reduce your risk of injury and improve your quality of life.

Functional exercise training may be especially beneficial as part of a comprehensive program for older adults to improve balance, agility and muscle strength, and reduce the risk of falls.

What are examples of functional fitness exercises?

Comprehensive physical movements found in activities such as tai chi and yoga involve varying combinations of resistance and flexibility training that can help build functional fitness.

Other examples of specific functional fitness movements that use multiple joints and muscles include multidirectional lunges, standing bicep curls, or bent-over row.

Multidirectional lunges help prepare your body for common activities, such as vacuuming and yard work. To do a lunge, keep one leg in place and step out with the other leg—to the front, back or side—until your knee reaches a 90-degree angle and your rear knee is parallel to the floor.

Think of a bent-over row; not the kind of row you do on a seated machine, but the kind you do leaning over a bench, holding the weight in one hand with your arm hanging straight down, and then pulling the weight up as your elbow points to the ceiling, finishing with your upper arm parallel to the ground. Now compare that motion to a carpenter bending over a piece of wood, a nurse bending over a bed to transfer a patient, or an auto mechanic bending over to adjust your carburetor. Anyone doing a bent-over row will find a carryover in things they do in normal life.

Are functional fitness exercises for everyone?

If you haven’t exercised for some time or have health problems, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Similarly, women who are pregnant should check with their doctors.

It’s also a good idea to start with exercises that use only your own body weight for resistance. As you become fitter and ready for more of a challenge, you can add more resistance in the form of weights or resistance tubing.

Performing movements in the water is a low-impact way of achieving functional exercise.

The functional fitness payoff As you add more functional exercises to your workout, you should see improvements in your ability to perform your everyday activities and, thus, in your quality of life. That’s quite a return on your exercise investment.

he Community Workshop held on September 12 produced great outcomes as well as a “charge” for additional activities and amenities. Three new volunteer community boards were created and empowered to ensure these objectives are achieved: WELCOME COMMITTEE • Goal of 100% resident and owner sign-up on Townsq, the Village’s digital community bulletin board, which can be used to open maintenance requests and post announcements. The HOA by-laws, CC&Rs, budgets, meeting minutes and more can also be found on the site. Did You Know?

Article III, sub-section 1, of the Village at Somersett Town Center’s CC&Rs clearly prohibits leasing one’s property to any lessee not legally deemed a “single family” unit. Leasing to more than two unrelated adults is a

violation (i.e., more than two unrelated roommates; or more than two adults living together who are not related by birth or marriage.) This past year we received a complaint regarding a home in the Village in which it was alleged up to 12 adults were occupying the home. The owner was notified and was seemingly unaware the legal lessee had allowed multiple unrelated adults to sub-lease. This unauthorized activity creates both a burden and an inconvenience for all other residents.

Projects Thanks to all for your cooperation during our re-asphalting of the entire Village roadways. Additionally, the emergency lane curbs were re-painted throughout the Village.

LAST BOOK YOU READ: Because my life revolves around the Marine Corps, Hue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam by Mark Bowden. That battle changed the way war was fought. There was a lot of hand-to-hand fighting and artillery strikes had to be very precise in order to limit damage to historic buildings.

WHY SOMERSETT? I moved here 18 months after Sandra, who came to Reno to finish school. She now works at Renown. I came here to support her.

Assessment Payments Submitted Online You can pay your monthly assessments online from the FirstService Residential website through ClickPay, a third-party payment processing company. Payments submitted through ClickPay typically take up to three business days to be credited to your assessment account. Please keep this in mind since payments received after the 30th are subject to a $25 late fee. ClickPay charges a fee for its payments made by debit or credit card. There is no fee if you pay by e-check. For an extra fee, you may arrange to have a payment posted

Please note that while we do investigate and document each complaint received, we cannot disclose the status of anyone’s account. Should a homeowner not respond to or correct a violation, he or she will be summoned to a hearing and could be suspended from the Club and assessed fines. At this time the Association has a policy not to enter a property unless it is bank owned, and then only to repair front-yard landscaping.

SNOW REMOVAL

Rules + Regulations Spotlight 26

Snow removal and street sweeping within the sub-associations of the Village and the Vue are the responsibility of the sub-associations. Other private streets within the Association will be plowed when there is an accumulation of three inches on the street. Streets will be swept within a reasonable time frame following the last snowfall to clear the streets of sand and debris.

In Somersett, any street that is not behind a gate is a public street, which means that plowing is the responsibility of the city. If you have questions, please contact the city at 334-2099.

Homeowners are responsible for maintaining the sidewalks adjacent to their property. The Association will plow the common area pathways/sidewalks along the three major parkways (Somersett, Del Webb and Somersett Ridge) if there is still snow on the walkways within 48 hours after the end of snowfall.
