Little Tykes Golf Clinic

Wednesday, January 17 & February 21, 4:15–5 pm 4 child min; 12 max This golf clinic is designed for small children, and it’s one of the best opportunities to get your child involved in a game that will last a lifetime. Somersett Golf and Country Club PGA professionals are proud to donate their time to your little ones! Just meet us at the country club driving range, and your child can join the fun.

Play the Tom Kite-designed Championship Country Club Course All Somersett residents are welcome to play the championship country club course four times per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $65 per player (in season) and $45 per player (off season November through March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents three days in advance at 787-1800, ext. 2. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies, we ask no denim, spaghettistrapped tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is also required.

Driving Range Somersett residents are encouraged to use the driving range at the country club. The SOA/country club agreement allows for complimentary range usage from the north side of the range. Please check in with the range attendant at the driving range, provide identification as a resident and sign the usage sheet. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult. We will provide shuttle service every 20 minutes during operating hours from May through October. Access to the turf range, putting green and newly renovated chipping green is available for $10 per person per day, payable at the golf shop prior to usage. Again, juniors must be accompanied by an adult. The turf is only available May through October. In the off-season, November through March, all residents may use the mats on the south side of the driving range, just a short walk from the parking lot. Please note, our dress code applies to the driving range.

W

hile the winter months don’t necessarily mean you’ll stop playing golf altogether, you’ll likely struggle to play anywhere near as many rounds as you would during the summer. Whether the ground is frozen or the weather too cold and wet, for some people the winter is a season to put the clubs away for a few months and take some time away from the golf course. But just because you aren’t playing golf doesn’t mean you can’t improve your game.

Winter Homework

The winter is a good time to look at your game and analyze the things you have done well and what you can do to improve next year. Think back or check your scorecards and consider your best and worst rounds of the year. In both cases, you will probably not need to think too hard – these rounds tend to stick in the memory quite well for obvious reasons. Think carefully about the day when you played your best round. How did you feel on that day? What was the best part of your game? Was there anything you did differently to previous rounds? Having completed the above tasks, you can start planning what you need to do ahead of the spring – get your mind engaged in the good. A great read that is pertinent to this idea is Be A Player by Lynn Marriot and Pia Nilson. And if you’re willing to invest 60 hours, Tabatha Gold is a great program.

any of our community members have asked how we might support homeless pets and local pet shelters. It’s a wonderful idea, and so we’ve added new donation boxes for dog and cat donations! Items such as dog and cat food, water and food bowls, toys, leashes and collars, brushes/grooming tools, pet beds and towels are desperately needed. From time to time, we will add a list of a specific shelter’s needs so that we can help all area pet shelters. Please bring your donations to The Club at Town Center. Do you know a girl who you want to ensure knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams? Welcome to Girls on the Run (GOTR) – where we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind – using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Since 2012, Girls on the Run – Sierras has inspired more than 2,000 girls in the Reno-Tahoe community and serves approximately 500 girls annually.

Girls face social pressures and conflicting messages about how they should act and who they should be. Studies show that by adolescence, girls’ confidence drops about twice as much as boys.’ Friendships become more complicated and challenging, girls’ perception of their academic ability declines, the likelihood of anxiety and depression increases and participation in physical activity plummets.

At Girls on the Run, we believe that not only can we change this stat but that every girl is inherently full of power and potential. By knowing they are the leaders of their lives, GOTR girls can change the world.

Through our programs, which run in the fall and spring, trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd through 8th grade develop essential skills to help them

navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. Our girls focus on the 5 C’s, which include confidence, character, care, connections and competence.

Our lessons help build girls’ self-worth and give them greater confidence. As they gain awareness of the power they possess, girls learn to choose positive actions which demonstrate respect and responsibility. Over the course of the season, girls learn to respond to others and themselves with care and compassion.

At the end of ten weeks, our girls impact our community through a service project and complete a celebratory 5K event, GOTR girls have the skills to nurture their physical, social and emotional competencies that they can apply in other areas of their lives. In a recent independent study, 97 percent of girls said they learned critical life skills at Girls on the Run that they are using at home, at school and with their friends and 7 out of 10 girls who improved from pre-season to post-season sustained improvements in the 5 C’s or physical activity beyond the season’s end.

We are making a difference in the lives of girls in our community daily. While more than 50 percent of the girls in our program come from low-income families, we have never turned away a girl due to her family’s inability to pay – entirely because of the generous donations of hundreds of members of our community. We are always looking for passionate individuals to join us by coaching or supporting our work to inspire even more girls. Kids’ Corner will only accept children two to six years of age. All children must be registered by the parent for Kids’ Corner prior to their first use of the room. Registration forms are available at the concierge desk or online at mysomersett.com.

Parents with children who are not bathroom independent must remain on Club premises at all times when their child is in Kids’ Corner.

This includes such activities as playing tennis, aerobics, using the fitness room, swimming or during a special Club function.

For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday.

The room operates on a six-to-one ratio, with a maximum of sixteen children allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Reservations may be made online at mysomersett. com seven days in advance.

All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within fifteen minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked in their child within the fifteen-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the wait list.

Since January 1 of this year, there have been 110 homes sold (as of December 10) compared to 89 for all of last year. This does not include Del Webb or the Village and the Vue. The average dollar per foot in 2016 that homes sold for was $192.00 and in 2017 it was $211.00, for an increase of 9%.

DEL WEBB HOMES Since January of this year, there have been 92 Del Webb homes sold compared to 79 sold last year and reported through our MLS system. In 2016, the average dollar per foot that homes sold for was $219.00. It all comes down to location on these and whether or not they had a view. So far this year, the average price per foot for a Del Webb home was $233.00, for an increase of 6%.

THE VUE AND VILLAGE Since January of this year, there have been 39 homes sold. The average selling price was $146.00 per foot in 2016 and $161.00 per foot in 2017 for an increase of 9%. That is great news for this product, it typically lags Del Webb and regular single family homes in Somersett. For the last two years, these units have done actually better than a single family home or a Del Webb home. There is definitely more demand in the Village than the Vue (better location) and the Village would have sold for more than the Vue. There is still a huge demand for this type of product in Somersett.

She recently started her own business, Bfit4u, which focuses on personal training and small-group lifestyle coaching. Beth is passionate about helping others lead healthy and fit lives, and she is a great motivator. In her personal life Beth enjoys activities such as running, cycling, hiking, snowboarding and snowshoeing. Beth has her Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management, is an ACE Group Fitness Instructor, AFAA Certified Personal Trainer, Spencer Institute Wellness Coach, NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist, and a PHI Pilates Certified Instructor.

Kerry Teegen Dickinson FUNDAMENTAL YOGA Kerry began her yoga journey by teaching children through YogaKids. After retiring as a teacher for the Washoe County School District, John began teaching skiing and tennis. For John, teaching tennis is the best of both worlds because it provides him with the opportunity to teach, but he also gets to do it in a fun and recreational setting. John grew up in the Reno area and has strong ties to his community. He loves to create a relaxed learning environment for his lessons and helping his students grow as tennis players.

She is certified through Integrated Yoga Therapy in Brazil and India, and she also holds a B.A. in Psychology, and an Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education, Health, and Physical & Sports Science. Karen has taught at several private and public organizations throughout the Reno area focusing on Yoga Therapy, Hatha Yoga and Pilates. She has experience working with patients who have had hip and knee replacements, the elderly, as well as individuals with unique mental and physical needs.

Renee Walker YOGA Renee is a certified yoga and meditation instructor with a variety of trainings, but her primary certification is from Ananda. She is a certified yoga therapist with a degree from Loyola Marymount University. Yoga therapy emphasizes healing a wide range of common diseases through individualized yoga practice. Renee began practicing yoga over 25 years ago, and through her journey discovered the path to mental and spiritual health. She teaches with an emphasis on flowing movements and breath designed to increase body and mind awareness. Leslie Brown ZUMBA Leslie has been enjoying Zumba for nearly 10 years and after falling in love with it herself, she knew she wanted to become an instructor. Leslie has an extensive background in Zumba fitness and is certified in Zumba Toning, Aqua Zumba and Sentao. She grew up in Mexico and began training in classical ballet at the age of 4. Leslie is passionate about helping people of all sizes and backgrounds feel good about themselves. Come dance, sweat and most of all have FUN with Leslie during Zumba.

Cindy Payton STEP, BOSU, SCULPT Cindy has been a group fitness instructor for over 25 years, and has taught a variety of classes for all ages and fitness levels. Cindy is an AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) certified Personal Trainer and Group Exercise instructor.

Traci Dean PERSONAL TRAINING Traci began her fitness journey 15 years ago as a junior at UNR when a friend suggested she look into the fitness management major, and she never looked back. UNDERSTANDING ACID REFLUX AND ORAL HEALTH

I

t’s common to experience gastroesophageal reflux — otherwise known as acid indigestion, acid reflux or heartburn — every so often. But heartburn also is a symptom of a chronic condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which affects about 20 percent of the U.S. population, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse.

What is acid reflux and GERD? Acid reflux occurs when muscles of the lower esophagus relax and allow stomach acids to flow upward into the esophagus and even the mouth. These stomach acids can cause irritation and inflammation of the esophagus. Acid reflux may progress further, developing into GERD. In patients who have GERD, the esophageal muscles are unable to keep stomach acids from flowing upward, causing corrosion of the esophageal lining and the uncomfortable burning sensation associated with heartburn.

Talk with your dentist about your symptoms if you’re experiencing them more than twice a week, as this could be an indicator of a chronic condition.

How is GERD treated?

Although GERD is a chronic condition, its symptoms can be treated using medications and by making lifestyle modifications. In addition to taking over-the-counter antacids and prescription H2 receptor blockers, you can reduce GERD symptoms by: • Avoiding beverages such as alcohol and coffee, as well as chocolate and spicy/greasy or tomato-based foods • Quitting smoking; smokers are more likely to develop GERD • Avoiding eating several hours before bed, or lying down two to three hours after eating • Losing weight if you are overweight or obese • Not wearing tight-fitting clothing

How can I protect my teeth against acid reflux?

Practicing good oral hygiene is the best way to prevent acid reflux or GERD from damaging your teeth and causing decay. In addition to brushing for two minutes twice a day, you can: • Visit your dentist regularly for a tooth enamel evaluation.

• Use a toothpaste that’s formulated for sensitive teeth.

• Do not brush your teeth for one hour after you consume acidic foods or drinks.

• Dissolve baking soda in water and swish the water in your mouth after you experience acid reflux.

• Ask your dentist about fluoride treatments to strengthen your teeth.

• Ask your dentist about wearing a mouthguard at night to prevent acid from damaging your teeth.

• Avoid over-the-counter antacids that have a high sugar content.

If you believe you may be at risk for acid reflux or GERD, speak with your dentist or physician.

How does GERD affect my oral health?

In addition to damaging the esophagus and increasing your risk of esophageal cancer, over time, GERD can erode tooth enamel.

Research indicates tooth enamel begins to erode at a pH, or acid level, of 5.5. With a pH of less than 2.0, your stomach acid can easily damage tooth enamel and cause increased tooth sensitivity, decay, discoloration and chipping.

Body Sculpt: A great way to define, sculpt and build lean muscle for all levels of fitness.

Classes focus on intense isolation exercises with free weights and resistance, ending with abs.

Boot Camp: Have fun while working hard with total body high intensity interval and circuit training; each boot camp class is intended to push you out of your comfort zone with different exercises to keep you on your toes and work up a sweat.

Crunch 15: A 15 minute power class that focuses solely on core and ab strengthening exercises.

Stretch 15: A 15 minute cool down class that focuses on stretching to increase flexibility.

Fundamental Yoga: Introduces the principles of alignment and breath work in a flow of postures. Students will be introduced to basic yoga postures through step-by-step verbal description and demonstration. This class is beginner friendly.

Hatha Yoga (Levels 1 and 2): Concentrates on physical health and mental well-being using body postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation techniques (dyana) with the goal of bringing about a healthy body and a clear, peaceful mind.

Gentle Sunrise Yoga: Enhance the output and experience of your day by greeting the morning slowly and methodically.

Mat Pilates: Using controlled breathing during body weight resisted movements on a floor mat to build core strength.

Meditation: A 15 minute mindful meditation practice to nurture a sound mind and enhance personal wellness.

Pickleball: A beginner friendly, racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong. Pickleball is open to anyone who wants to play.

Power Cycle : A condensed spin class that utilizes effective bursts of strength training while spinning.

Spin: A high energy indoor cycling class where you’ll ride a mixture of flats, hills & sprints while burning calories all the way.

Spin/Sculpt: The perfect strength training and cardio combo; feel the burn on the bike and then hit the floor to pump it up.

Spin Boot Camp: Get ready to sweat! This class combines high intensity cycling intervals with boot camp circuit training off the bike to give you an intense, full-body workout.

Tai Chi Easy: Involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner, accompanied by deep breathing. Non-competitive, self-paced, gentle exercise and stretching; also referred to as “Moving Meditation”. Beginner friendly, all levels welcome.

Yoga Jam: High-energy vinyasa flow, up-beat music, a good sweat and deep stretching to jumpstart your week. Stress less, jam more!

Zumba®: Featuring Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves, Zumba® is an exercise class that keeps everyone motivated by creating a dance party atmosphere. Come join the fun! *The Sports Court will be closed for a private rental on Wednesdays from 5:45-6:45 PM until January 31st, 2018* REMINDERS: Please arrive on time and sign in at the concierge desk before class begins. Heavy colognes/perfumes should not be worn during class. All participants are asked to wipe down equipment after use. Used equipment should be returned to its’ original location after class. Cell phones should be put on silent and should not be used during class; if you have an emergency please take your call into the hallway.

Rules & Regulations Spotlight

Assessments are due on the first of each month and are overdue if not paid by the 30th of the month. A late fee of $25 will be posted to accounts not paid by the 30th of the month. Accounts 60 days past due will lose clubhouse and/or Canyon Nine privileges. Accounts 75 days past due will be sent to collections.

Assessment Payments Submitted Online (via Paylease) Did you know you can pay your monthly assessments online from the FirstService Residential website? Payments submitted online go through a third-party payment processing company called ClickPay. Payments submitted through ClickPay will, and typically do, take up to three business days to be credited to your assessment account.

Please keep this information in mind for last-minute assessment payments as payments received after the 30th are subject to a $25 late fee. ClickPay charges a fee for payments made by debit or credit card. There is no fee if you pay by e-check. For an extra fee, you may arrange to have a payment posted within one business day.

You may also submit payments to the SOA office, via check or money order only.

HOLIDAY DECORATIONS Holiday decorations may be installed up to ten days before a holiday, and must be taken down within ten days after the holiday, with the exception of the December holidays. December decorations may be installed at Thanksgiving and must be removed by January 31. The Association, Association common areas and commercial buildings are excluded from this provision.

SNOW REMOVAL & STREET SWEEPING Snow removal and street sweeping within the sub-associations of the Village and the Vue are the responsibility of the sub-associations.

Other private streets within the Association will be snow plowed when there is an accumulation of three inches on the street. Streets will be swept within a reasonable timeframe following the last snowfall to clear the streets of sand and debris. For snow removal and sweeping issues on city-owned streets, contact the city at 3342099.

Homeowners are responsible for maintaining the sidewalks adjacent to their property. The Association will plow the common area pathways/sidewalks along the three major parkways (Somersett, Del Webb and Somersett Ridge) if there is still snow on the walkways within 48 hours after the end of snowfall.
