A Letter from the President Greetings fellow green industry pioneers, This is the last letter I will be writing as NLA president. It has been an interesting ride, but now it’s time to pass the baton. I would like to say thank you all for the support and contributions you have made to our green industry. I would also like to encourage you to get involved in any way you can. We are growing and improving with each passing moment! The good news is that the best is yet to come! We meet the second Tuesday of each month at Noon at 4955 Energy Way. I hope to see you there! Until then, let’s celebrate this holiday season and embrace the challenges of the New Year.

28th Annual Trade Show & Conference APPLICATION FOR EXHIBIT SPACE Reno Sparks Convention Center • Reno, Nevada • February 28, 2019 The Exhibitor named below agrees to lease space from the Nevada Landscape Association (hereafter referred to as management) according to the terms and conditions contained in this application. Table rentals are based on a first-come, first-served basis with locations held by payment only. Table rental purchased after February 1st will increase by $100.

Exhibitors will not break down before 4 p.m.

EXHIBITOR SPACE All spaces will be provided 8’ draped table and two chairs. Standard exhibit space is 10’ wide and 10’ deep.

Additional booth furnishings, freight, shipping and decorating requirements may be obtained through the service contractor at an additional charge. Exhibitor packages with additional information regarding the contractor will be sent to the exhibitors prior to set-up upon request by exhibitor.

Exhibits may not exceed 8’ in height in back and 3’ on sides, except with written permission by NLA. Management reserves the right to have any part of an exhibit removed should it be considered illegal, objectionable or unsuitable.

The space shall be occupied by the exhibitor named on the agreement only. Any assigning or subleasing booth space to another party is not allowed.

Should exhibitor not occupy leased space prior to show opening management will retain any deposits paid and exhibitor remains liable for any balance due. Any display in booth space not paid for in full by close of show will be placed in storage until contract balance and storage fees are paid in full.

Cancellation must be made in writing to the Nevada Landscape Association, P.O. Box 7431, Reno, NV 895107431.

If such cancellation is received 30 days prior to show, the NLA shall be entitled to retain or collect 50% of the exhibitor’s total contract obligation as liquidated damages.

No refunds will be made if cancellation notice is received later than 30 days prior to show and the NLA shall be entitled to collect 100% of the exhibitor’s total contract obligation. Any refunds will be paid after the conclusion of the Nevada Landscape Trade Show.

Management shall not be liable for any damages or expenses incurred by exhibitors in the event the show is delayed, interrupted or not held as scheduled. If the show is not held due to reasons beyond the control of the Management. Management may retain an amount paid by the exhibitors to defray expenses already incurred.

QWEL Certifies the First Qualified Water-efficient Landscapers in the State

T

he first QWEL program in Nevada, which debuted in midOctober, was a great success. Twenty-six people attended the training, and 18 people took the exam to become certified. The professionals who chose to be QWEL-certified ‘pros for hire’ were added to an online database on the QWEL website, where homeowners and companies can find them.

Thanks to the Nevada Landscape Association and Truckee Meadows Water Authority for partnering with us on this program.

Also, thanks to Western Nevada Supply, Signature Landscapes, Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply, and Rainbird for donating supplies.

PRE-EMERGENT HERBICIDES & TREE ROOTS

ith the winter season approaching pre-emergent herbicides are beginning to be applied. Products such as Caseron, Dimension, Barricade, and Ronstar, are now sitting in shops as landscapers and pest control applicators wait for the rains to come in hopes to apply the products just before a rain that will water the product in. Due to the importance of watering in such products some labels document specific dates that the products must be applied. Others on the other hand, claim to be stable and resistant to degradation in the soil. But whatever product selected, it is important to understand that the reasoning behind watering in such products are to allow the active ingredients to reach the dormant seeds killing them as they germinate. Therefore the chemistry of such products are designed to move through the soil profile.

Some products are so effective at moving through the soil they have been classified as “Restricted Use Pesticides” regulating their use on some sites and by untrained applicators. But perhaps lesser known and lesser regulated are some per-emergent products that due to their long term persistence in the soil, capable of controlling weeds over several seasons, have the capacity of damaging desired ornamental trees and shrubs if applied to close to the root zone. Products containing the active ingredients Bromacil and Diuron are such products that if applied together will provide effective weed control for a long period of time but must be used in areas where bare ground is the desired outcome.

With that, the applicator should pay close attention to the area applied and determine if any trees are within the treatment area all the while understand that some variety of trees have roots that can extent well beyond their drip-line. In fact, instead of gauging the tree’s root extension based on the drip-line a better gauge would be to consider the height multiply by ten depending on the variety and age of the tree.

It is further important to understand that although the tree may not die directly from the herbicide exposure itself, the exposure may cause the tree to defoliate then push new growth consecutively over a single season. This will place undue stress on the tree opening it up to other pests and diseases potentially leading to a secondary cause of death.

A third factor to consider is the overall environmental conditions that bare ground offers. Such conditions may not benefit the trees health and vitality in term of moisture retention and dust that spider mites and other pests often flourish in. So to determine a safe distance to apply an herbicide containing Bromacil and Diuron near trees would be difficult if the trees were present at all.

However, the intent of this article is not to denounce the use of the product but simply to remind users that its use should be to maintain or establish bare ground which may not be suitable for existing trees by exposing them directly to the herbicide or by creating an environment that may damage the tree through stress.

Therefore, before using such products determine the desired outcome and verify if the desired outcome would be suitable for existing trees and shrubs and if there are trees present could their roots be in the treatment zone leading to possible damage.

Benefits of Using Pavers & Hardscape

In most cases, pavers and other hardscape applications are inexpensive and easy to install with minimal prep time.

Many new housing developers in the Las Vegas market are utilizing hardscapes for new building driveways and patios because of it’s low-cost and quick install times.

Unless the pavers are being cleaned or sealed, there is no drying or curing time like concrete, cement or asphalt require. Pavers are ready to enjoy as soon as they are installed.

LOW MAINTENANCE Maintenance requirements for pavers is very minimal as well, especially if the pavers are sealed. Just spray them off with a hose or use a recommended cleaner and brush the cleaner on with a rough bristle broom, scrub them until you achieve the desired result, then hose them off.

Making repairs or replacing any cracked or broken pieces is simple too. Just remove the damaged pavers and replace them with a new matching one. Having to patch a crack in concrete, cement or asphalt is almost always a challenge and repaving an entire driveway or patio can be labor intensive, costly and time consuming.
