Get ready to bargain for great deals at the semi-annual Somersett Garage Sale, one of just two community-dictated garage sales per year. Maps will be available for pick up starting Friday, May 3 from noon to 9 pm and Saturday starting promptly at 7 am at The Club at Town Center. Participants are welcome to put up signs during the sale only to direct people to their street and house.

Stuart Smith – Bunker Play

Did you know the most common fault in trying to hit out of a bunker is trying to hit out of a bunker? That’s right – the most common error is a player trying to lift or help the ball out of the bunker by staying on their back foot and lifting their hands/club up through the ball. To successfully hit out of a bunker, a player must put weight on the front foot at impact with the ball while staying down through the shot and trusting that the club will lift the ball out of the bunker by swinging down through the sand. It seems counter-intuitive, but it works.

Practice this by selecting the most lofted club in your set – preferably your sand wedge or lob wedge – and placing the ball just left of center in your stance if you’re a right-handed player (vice versa for lefties). Hold the club with an open clubface. That is, lay the club back so it points to the right or to the sky. Rotate the club around and up with your body and hinge your wrists so that the club and your forearms form the letter “L.” The majority of your weight should still be on your left side and foot. From here, unwind your body to the target while unhinging that letter “L” down into the sand, splashing, or taking out, a six by six inch square of sand onto the putting green. Finish by facing your target with your belly button to the target and weight remaining on your left side.

Rick Christensen – Low and Slow Takeaway

It’s common in our golf swings for our hands and wrists to become overly active in initiating the backward motion of the swing. Don’t misunderstand – good golf swings have hands and wrists involved, but to be effective they must work in conjunction with the rotation of the body. A good swing thought at the beginning of your backswing is to take the club back low and slow to the ground on your target line. Your target line is simply the extension from the ball in line with your target.

This allows your left shoulder to start its rotation and enables you to keep your left arm extended on the takeaway. For many, this is referred 4

to a “one piece takeaway” or “arms connected to body takeaway.” If you are successful, you will see an increase in distance and experience more control with your direction.

Tyler Ramsey – Practice Perfect

For many of us, golf is exercise. For those who perceive it that way, your shot results should be insignificant. Get a good workout by rapidfiring a bag of balls and go on to the day’s next activity. For those of you working on bettering your game, use your time at the range for a specific purpose. Let’s say the direction of your golf shots is poor lately and you’d like to improve. Prior to each shot on the range, be more target conscious. Stand behind each shot and become aware of where you want to line up. You might put some clubs or aiming sticks down to help you get a sense of perfect alignment. This will help you take good alignment to the golf course for your next round. And remember, over 65% of your shots are from within 100 yards with just under 50% being putts. Don’t forget to work on your short game if you want to improve your score.

Cris Novich – No Flop Shots Required

When choosing shots around the green, try to use a variety of clubs – don’t get stuck using just one. For the amateur, it’s best to get the ball rolling on the green as soon as possible. If you’re just off the green and have lots of green to work with, try bumping an eight or seven iron.

While this might seem boring, your misses will not be nearly as severe.

If you have a tight lie and a delicate shot try a hybrid, which will make the shot feel more like a putt and much easier to control. When using 60° or 56° wedges on shots around the green, you are forced to use a big swing. If you don’t hit it perfectly, your miss will be greatly exaggerated.

While hitting a flop shot can be fun, posting a lower score is much better so practice these shots with the less lofted clubs. They will require some getting used to, but over time, you will improve your scoring because of better play around the green.

Children’s Fishing Derby

Sunday, June 8, 7–10 am Grab your fishing pole and join us at the pond on the Canyon Nine for some fishing during Nevada’s Free Fishing Day! No fishing license is needed – it’s your one chance throughout the year to get hooked for free, though all limits and other regulations do apply. Demonstrations will be held on baiting hooks and tying bobbers, and experts will be on hand to discuss the importance of catch and release, the correct approach to fishing on this pond and how to stream fish. Prizes will be awarded for every fish caught. Bring your own pole and hooks and we’ll supply the bait.

Play Championship Golf at the Somersett Country Club Course

May tee times: Tuesday through Friday starting at 8 am; Saturday & Sunday at 7:30 am June tee times: Tuesday through Friday starting at 7:30 am; Saturday & Sunday at 7 am All residents can play the championship country club course twice per year! Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $55 per player, which includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart.

We take tee times from residents three days in advance. Men, please remember our simple dress code of collared golf shirts, caps worn forward at all times and no denim. For the ladies, we request no denim, spaghetti-strapped tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is also required.

Kids’ Corner Policy Reminders Effective April 29, the room will operate on a six to one ratio, with a maximum of sixteen kids allowed at any given time. • Kids’

Corner will only accept children two to six years of age. All children must be registered by the parent for Kids’ Corner prior to their first use of the room. Registration forms are available at the concierge desk or online at mysomersett.com. • Parents with children who are not bathroom independent must remain on the Club premises at all times when their child is in Kids’ Corner. This includes such activities as playing tennis, aerobics, using the fitness room, swimming or during a special Club function. • For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. • The room operates on a six to one ratio, with a maximum of sixteen kids allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Each Saturday at 12 pm, reservations will be opened for the upcoming week. • All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time.

If the parent has not checked in their child within the 15-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the wait list. • Noshows will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club. Cancellations must be received by 8 am on the day of the reservation.

Spring Thoughts By the Law Offices of Stephens & Edwards, LLP Spring is rejuvenating, and a perfect time to clean house, organize your personal affairs and assess any legal documents that affect your life. If you have a trust, review of the trust assets in the spring, and again in the fall, is a good habit to establish. For a trust to be relevant and effective as an estate planning tool, it must be kept current with the inclusion of new assets and the removal of listed assets that are no longer part of the trust. Have you acquired new personal or real property that has not been added to the trust?

Have you divested the trust of any assets that may require an amendment to the trust document? Have you experienced a life altering event, such as divorce, death of a trustee or beneficiary, or inheritance of a significant amount of money that may require the trust to be amended, or that may trigger notice to be given to beneficiaries? Seek legal assistance if you have any questions about making necessary changes to your trust, or if you are unsure about whether an asset should be included in the trust now, or at a later date by beneficiary designation.

Spring is also a time when you might be considering making changes to your residence. The Club at Town Center is now offering a great new fitness tool to track personal achievements. Fitassess.com is a web-based fitness assessment program that gives personal trainers the tools to conduct a complete physical assessment on their clients. Tests include BMI, blood pressure, body fat analysis, body measurements, cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility and muscular endurance. The program compiles these results for a ranking that is compared to national averages, and it also provides a number for a body’s fitness age. This information is useful for determining a starting point and making it easy to set goals. It’s also a means of tracking your overall improvement, which boosts motivation and keeps you focused on your training. RSVP Policy Please remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund.

No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up Fee The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Guest Fees: $10 adult; $8 junior Members are allowed to bring up to six guests at one time for a maximum of ten visits per guest. Members must accompany guests at all times.

Alcohol Policy Alcoholic beverages may be purchased from the Club. Members and their guests are not allowed to bring their own alcoholic beverages onto the premises, including the pool area and Canyon Nine. No alcoholic beverages will be sold or served to any person not permitted to purchase the same under the laws of the state of Nevada or be sold for off-premises consumption. The Club reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to refuse service to any member or guest who appears to be intoxicated.

Assessments are due on the first of each month and are past due if not paid by the last business day of the month. A late fee of $25 will be posted to accounts not paid by the last business day of the month.

Rules & Regulations Reminder

Spring is here, and the landscaping throughout the community will start to green up. But noxious weeds will also be making their return.

Lot owners, please be aware of Article IV – Section 23 of the CC&Rs, which states that “no weeds… shall be placed or permitted to grow upon any lot.” To comply, please ensure that noxious weeds are cleared from your property or the Association will move forward with plans to have the weeds removed, with the cost of doing billed to your account(s).

Homeowners, please ensure that you are appropriately watering and maintaining your landscaping as the weather improves.

Please note that while we do investigate and document each complaint received, we cannot disclose the status of anyone’s account.

Should a homeowner not respond to or correct a violation, he or she will be summoned to a hearing at which time they could be suspended from the Club and assessed fines. Once fines reach $500, a lien could be placed on the property. At this time the Association has a policy not to enter a property, unless it is bank owned, and then only to repair front yard landscaping.

Did you Know?

Due to certain Nevada statutes, the Association may not regulate parking on public streets owned by the City of Reno. Although the CC&Rs were written to allow the Association the ability to enforce parking on any and all streets, the law states otherwise. The Association can only enforce the CC&Rs and any rules and regulations established on the private streets they own. Any parking issues on public streets must be directed to the City of Reno at Reno Direct 334-4636 or renodirect@ cityofreno.com.

POOL RULES 1. Use of the pool is restricted to hours when lifeguard is on duty. Swimmers are asked to use caution at all times when utilizing the pool area. Any incident should be reported to a lifeguard immediately.

2. Children using flotation devices must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children under the age of six must be closely supervised by an accompanying adult.

3. Children wearing diapers must have vinyl pants over the diaper and under the bathing suit. The Club reserves the right to ask a child be removed from the water if he or she is not wearing vinyl pants.

4. Proper bathing suits are required for swimming. No cut-off shorts or thongs allowed.

5. Please shower before entering pool.

6. No diving in any area of the pool.

7. No glass containers of any kind permitted on pool deck.

8. No food or drink allowed in the pool.

9. Persons with skin disorders may be denied use of the pool.

10. No pets allowed within pool deck area. Exceptions will be made for guide animals.

11. Adult swim is for persons 18 years or older.

12. No rafts permitted without approval from management.

13. No running, horse playing or water guns permitted within pool deck area.

14. Kickboards are for use as swimming aids and/or swimming instruction; no standing, sitting or horse playing allowed.

15. The pool furniture is not to be removed from its location on the pool deck.

16. Members are not permitted to bring in outside coolers larger than 12” x 12” x 12” without prior management approval. No outside alcohol is permitted.

17. Refrain from talking to lifeguards while they are on the stands.

18. Lifeguards’ instructions must be obeyed at all times by members and guests for maximum safety.

SLIDE RULES 1. Swimmers must stay clear of the catch pool and slide exit area. Do not reach into the slide from the deck area.

2. Riders must exit the catch pool immediately after use.

3. Children less than 48 inches tall who are unable to swim may only use the slide with a parent.

4. Parents may assist their child out of the water in the catch pool if necessary, but they cannot stand in front of the slide to catch their child. Parents may wait at the steps if needed.

5. Only one person at a time allowed down the slide, excluding a parent and small child as described above.

6. Please walk up the steps and make sure the catch pool is empty before beginning slide run.

7. Riders must go down on their back with feet first.

8. No flotation devices of any kind permitted on the slide, including those in bathing suits.

9. No goggles, sunglasses, hats or any object that may fall off into the water permitted on the slide.

10. No diving from the slide into the catch pool upon exiting the flume.

SPA RULES 1. The adult spa adjacent to the lap pool is for adults (18+) only.

2. Children 12 years of age or younger who wish to use the family spa must be supervised by an adult.

3. Children under 12 years of age should not use the spa for more than 10 consecutive minutes.

4. Extended exposure to hot water or vapors may be detrimental to the health of elderly persons and persons with heart conditions, diabetes or high or low blood pressure.

5. People with skin, ear, genital or other body infections, open sores or wounds should not use the hot tub because of the possibility of spreading infection.

6. Parents are to warn children not to allow water in their mouths as this can cause infection and illness.

7. The heat of the hot tub water speeds up the effects of alcohol and can cause sleepiness, dizziness and unconsciousness.

8. Horse playing, splashing and swimming are not permitted in the spas.

9. The family spa will close daily from 2–2:15 pm for backwashing and refilling.

Group Lessons

2 week session – 3 classes per week starting June 3 $30/session for members; $35/session for Goddard students Group swim lessons are available to members of the Club and students of the Goddard School.

Beginner, advanced beginner and intermediates levels will be offered.

Parent-Toddler Lessons

Saturdays & Sundays starting June 8 from 9:15–9:45 am $5/class for members; $8/class for Goddard students Parent-toddler swim lessons are available to members of the Club and students of the Goddard School. Children participating in the program must be between six months and three years of age with little to no experience in the water.

Private Lessons

$20/single lesson; $90 for a package of 5; $140 for a package of 8 Private lessons are offered to members of the Club at Town Center. Swimmers must be at least two years of age to participate. All lessons are 30 minutes long and will be scheduled through your instructor between 8–10 am and 5–6 pm.

Year Round Spa

Spa Hours: 8 am to 8 pm The spa located by the play pool is open for adults 18 and older through May 12, weather permitting.

The spa will close on Monday, May 13 to allow for maintenance and cleaning as we switch to the spa located by the Lap Pool on Saturday, May 18.

2013 Pool Schedule Pools will remain open through October 27 on a modified schedule.

Lap Pool Usage

Signs at the lap pool will indicate what is taking place during the day. Look for signs reading “Swim Lessons Only,” “Lap Swim Only,” and “Aquatic Fitness Class” posted on the lap pool gate entrance or at respective swim lane ends.

Adult Water Fitness 25 person max

Starting in June, join this invigorating and joint-friendly workout in the lap pool. If there are more than 10 participants in the class, the entire pool will be used. Please look for class days and times on the fitness calendar found at The Club at Town Center and online at mysomersett.com.

sierra canyon Weeds, Weeds and More Weeds!

eeds are an ongoing maintenance issue this time of year for not only Sierra Canyon homeowners but in our Association common areas as well.

Remember to plan ahead and hire a landscape company if you are leaving for the long term – don’t wait until you get back, when the weeds are beyond your capability of removal.

Besides weeds, mow strip trees this time of year will show signs of stress while coming out of hibernation. Sierra Canyon Association sends notices from time to time to owners whose mow strip trees may have health issues or need replacement.

Please remember this letter is sent to help you, not to criticize your tree care. The most common issues with the mow strip trees include a lack of established tree wells to protect trees from a mower or weed whacker and having water drip lines as well as lawn irrigation that adds too much water to the trees.

Working on these important projects will help maintain and enhance everybody’s property values to the high level you expected moving into Somersett and Sierra Canyon by Del Webb in particular.

Choosing Drought Tolerant Plants

orthern Nevada has experienced high temperatures and very little precipitation for quite a few years. These dry conditions can drastically affect your landscaping, not to mention staggering water bills. There are many drought tolerant plants and flowers available that will not only help you conserve water, but also add beautiful color and texture to your property. Here are just a few examples: • Artemisia Schmidtiana Silver Mound. This is one of the most popular foliate perennials. Artemisia forms a low cushion of ferny, silvery-grey leaves and is a perfect choice for hot, dry areas.

• Eriogonum umbellatum Sulfur Buckwheat. This beautiful plant can withstand sun, heat, drought and wind, making it an ideal choice for our dry climate. Flowers range from yellow to orange or red.

• Delosperma cooperi Hardy Iceplant. This great groundcover has succulent needle-like leaves and bright purple flowers.

• Nepeta x faassenii Catmint. This mound of lavender and aromatic grayish leaves is especially hardy and very easy to grow.

• Sedum Autumn Joy. This plant is dependable and very low maintenance. The pink and copper flowers attract butterflies and grows to about two feet tall and wide with wide succulent stems and leaves.

• Helictotrchon sempervirens Blue Oat Grass. This grass is the best choice for accents and looks attractive year-round.

• Yucca filamentosa Adam’s Needle. This hardy plant features long, blue-green leaves and fragrant cream flowers in the early summer.
