Note from the Club

he New Year has started with a bang at the Canyon Nine! We had over one hundred golfers in January, and the Canyon Nine is looking to keep it rolling all year long. We are so excited for the 2011 season and everything we have on offer. From clinics and lessons to great tournaments all season long, it’s going to be a great year.

We’re bringing back some of our favorite tournaments, Glow Ball, Wine & Dine and Conquer the Canyon, and we’ve added some new tournaments too. Look for the Canyon Nine 3 Club Kick-Off in May and the 2 Person Turkey Scramble in November.

We’re also offering our wonderful instructional clinics for both women and juniors all season long starting in May. And, we’ve added a new clinic we’re calling Little Tikes Golf Clinic, scheduled once a month on Wednesday evenings. It’s designed for children ages 3-6 years old. This is a great way to get the kids involved early. Our first Little Tikes Golf Clinic is April 27, 2011.

New for the 2011 summer will be a bi-monthly Men’s Skin Game hosted on Thursday evenings.

The event will be co-sponsored by The Grape & The Grain and is sure to be a hit.

Community Events 6th Annual Springfest Saturday, May 7 11 am–3 pm Spring fever hits Somersett!

We’re gearing up to welcome spring with this amazing event.

The Club will come alive with music, vendors, demonstrations and the sounds of families ready for a little outdoor fun.

Springfest is an event all your friends and family can enjoy, so bring the kids down to enjoy pony rides, face painting, bounce houses and more!

Thursdays, March 17 | 7–9 am | RSVP by the Monday before Adults are invited to join association and club staff for coffee and donuts in the Club’s great room during an informal meeting about the happenings in Somersett. We look forward to seeing you!

Saturday, May 7 | 7 am–noon You never know what treasure you’ll find or bargain you’ll get at the Somersett garage sale! Per the Somersett Owners Association, two community garage sales are permitted per year, so take advantage of the spring sale to start your spring cleaning! To have your Somersett home listed on the map, please email events@mysomersett.com.

Include your name, address, Somersett neighborhood, phone number and email. If you don’t have access to email, just stop by the Club or call 787-4500. To be included on the map, all submissions must be received by Friday, April 29. Maps will be available for pick up starting Friday, May 6 from noon to 9 pm and Saturday starting promptly at 7 am at The Club at Town Center. Participants will be allowed to put up signs during the sale only to direct people to their street/house.

We have arranged for the Salvation Army to have two trucks located in Somersett to pick up any items not sold at the sale. To make arrangements for same day pick-up, please contact Steve Miller at 688-4555 ext 200.

It’s the perfect opportunity to meet the neighbors and ask questions about your new neighborhood.

5th Annual Chili Cook-Off Saturday, April 23 | 11 am–1 pm | RSVP by Monday, April 18 Tasting bowls $2/person; vendor participation; no entry fee; Set-up time 10:30–11 am Got what it takes to beat the Club’s 2010 Chili Cook-Off champion, Jennifer Anderson? Then hit the kitchen and get to cooking! All Somersett residents are encouraged to participate in this tasty event.

This year, participants are limited to serving chili only, and prizes will be awarded for the top three vendors based on the public’s votes. Make sure to bring your chili all ready to serve!

Northstar Lift Tickets Ticket Costs—Adult: $68; Young Adult (13–22): $58; Child (5–12): $22 (child tickets are good for 2 out of 3 days) Corporate lift tickets may be purchased throughout the winter season from the concierge desk. With the ticket in hand, you can skip the lines at the resorts and head straight up the lifts. Tickets are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

In an effort to stay on top of pace and play while offering a more enjoyable round, the Canyon Nine maintains the use of tee times.

Members may reserve tee times up to ten days in advance, with eightminute intervals used throughout the day. Please contact the golf hut to book your tee times at 787-4500 ext 330.

Saturday, May 14 | 10 am shotgun | RSVP by Monday, May 9 The 2011 Canyon Nine 3 Club Kick-Off is a great way to bring in the new golf season. Players will choose only 3 clubs to take on the Canyon Nine. There will be divisions for men, women and juniors, with Closest to the Pin contest and prizes for the low scorers in each division. 2011 Golf Clinics Join Golf Director Ryan Bopp at the Canyon Nine for tips, pointers and how-to’s to help improve your score this season. Clinics will include skills on putting, pitching, chipping and hitting out of the sand traps.

Instructional clinics will begin in May and run through August.

Kids’ Corner Policy Reminders Kids’ Corner will only accept children 3 to 6 years of age who are

bathroom independent. • For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–noon on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm Monday through Thursday. • The room operates on a 6 to 1 ratio, with a maximum of 12 kids allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Each Saturday at 12 pm, reservations will be opened for the upcoming week. • All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked their child in within the 15-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the wait list. • No show reservations will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club. Cancellations must be received by 8 am on the day of the reservation.

Inclement Weather—The Club at Town Center may operate on limited hours due to inclement weather. We will do everything we can to open by 8 am and stay open until 6 pm. Please call ahead to 787-4500 or check www. mysomersett.com when you see snow outside.

Please Check In—Remember to present your membership card at the concierge desk each time you use the facility. Even though the staff may know you by sight, we need to scan your card into the system for tracking, accounting and planning purposes. If you have not had your membership card made, please bring your Nevada driver’s license for identification and we will print your card on the spot. If you’ve lost your card, we will gladly make a replacement card for $10.

RSVP Policy—Please remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before the event to receive a refund. No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest to an event, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up Fee—The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Guest Fees: $10 per adult; $8 per junior Members are allowed to bring up to six guests at one time for a maximum of ten visits per guest. Members must accompany guests at all times.

Children Usage Policy 1. Children 12 years of age and younger must be accompanied and under direct supervision of a parent or guardian over the age of 18 when using the facility, except as stated specifically in the following rules.

2. Children ages 3 to 6 that are bathroom independent may use the Kids’ Corner by making a reservation during applicable hours. Parents with children in Kids’ Corner may leave their child with the activity leader for supervision.

3. Children 10 to 12 years of age may use the teen room, sports court, and/or pool without direct supervision under the following circumstances. Children 13 to 17 years of age may utilize all areas of the Club, with the exception of the fitness room until the child is 14 years of age, without supervision under the following circumstances. a. The parent or guardian has completed, signed and returned to the concierge desk a waiver of usage for the child, and both child and parent have met with a manager to review rules and regulations of the Club. b. If the child misbehaves while at the facility or is not complying with rules of usage, the child will receive a verbal warning. Subsequent transgressions will result in a second verbal warning followed by a written warning.

After each warning, the parents will be contacted. Both the manager on duty and the parent must sign a waiver

ommittees provide a variety of important functions for Sierra Canyon, and we’d like to recognize the time and effort given by our volunteers. They are truly an invaluable resource to the community. We have two standing committees of the Sierra Canyon Board of Directors, the Nominating Committee and the Architectural Review Committee. In addition, we also have a Recreation Committee and the recently formed Budget and Finance Committee. All of these committees provide important functions for both the Sierra Canyon Board of Directors and Association staff.

The Nominating Committee is called upon each time we have a Board of Directors election and charged with establishing the timeline of elections and counting all votes. Without these committee volunteers counting election ballots and holding a “Meet the Candidates Night,” the demand on staff and other board members would be overwhelming. Thank you to those that have served on this committee in the past and for those who will serve in the future!

The Sierra Canyon Architectural Review Committee (ARC) reviews and approves all Sierra Canyon landscaping plans and should not to be confused with the Aesthetic Guideline Committee (AGC) of Somersett. The ARC worked hard in 2010 to get many items back from Somersett AGC that would have otherwise required a submittal fee for Sierra Canyon homeowners. A common misconception of the ARC is that they are in charge of violations within Sierra Canyon. Rather, our management company is the sole entity with the authority to make violation drives and send violation letters within Sierra Canyon. The 14

acknowledging the disciplinary action. c. After two written warnings, the child will be suspended for a period of three months and no longer permitted to use the facilities, including but not limited to the teen room, sports court and pool, unless under the direct supervision of the parent or guardian. Upon completion of the three-month suspension, the child, parent/guardian and club manager will meet to determine privilege reinstatement. Reinstatement cannot occur until all parties have met. d. If a third incident occurs (1st incident after reinstatement), the child will be suspended for a period no less than six months and no longer permitted to use the facilities, including but not limited to the teen room, sports court and pool, unless under the direct supervision of the parent. Upon completion of the six-month suspension, the child, parent and club manager will meet to determine privilege reinstatement. Reinstatement cannot occur until all parties have met. e. This policy will repeat in six-month suspension increments for each occurrence following the third incident until the child reaches the age of 18.

4. The manager on duty is authorized to remove any child whose conduct does not comply with the rules and regulations of the Club. Horseplay, profanity, disruptive conduct and inappropriate behavior are strictly prohibited.

5. The Club does not provide supervision to those children using the facility outside of Kids’ Corner.

6. Parents are responsible for the conduct of their children and shall indemnify and hold harmless the Club, its directors, officers, shareholders, partners, managers, members, employees, affiliates, representatives and agents from any and all loss, cost, claim, injury, damage or liability arising out of the use of thereof by the member’s child or children.

7. The Club is not responsible for items left in the activity center.

Sierra Canyon

ARC works closely with new homeowners who have 90 days from close of escrow to install rear yard landscaping and also works with other homeowners who may decide to add more plantings to their existing yards. The committee meets November through March on the second Wednesday of the month at the Aspen Lodge (8:30 am) and the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month the remainder of the year.

The ARC is made up of five homeowners who are there to help and they all do a fantastic job of doing just that!

The Recreation Committee at Sierra Canyon performs a number of important tasks as well. Over the past few years, the five-member homeowner committee has been instrumental in researching and assisting the Board of Directors and Association staff with a variety of improvements to the Aspen Lodge. A few examples include providing new fitness equipment in the Sierra Canyon gym, helping with purchases such as our cost-saving variable speed pumps for the pool and spa, tennis court resurfacing, pickle ball courts, lending library, storage cabinets, water volleyball net in pool area, and much more.

These are just a few of the many agenda items that the Recreation Committee has tackled over the years, all of which have greatly helped both the Board of Directors and Association staff. The Recreation Committee meets on the second Friday of every month at the Aspen Lodge (8:00 am) and the committee welcomes all Sierra Canyon homeowners to attend.

Committees are a great way to get involved in your community and are often the training ground for future Board of Directors members.

Pick up a committee application at the Aspen Lodge this year and consider joining a committee. You will find the results very rewarding.
