Sustainable L.A. Farmhouse The Hollywood power couple dug in and planted some serious roots perched on top of a Los Angeles hilltop. This couple has undoubtedly come to the completion of their legacy property.
This rustic self-sustainable home is a work of art and a real breath of fresh air. This Hollywood couple dug a well to irrigate their land and went to work planting a field of corn that they harvested! This six-acre property hits all the points of a whimsically rustic barn meets a clean, modern home vibe.
This vast undertaking to create a home from the ground up is either a make you or break you kind of project. They had specific details that encompassed their ideas in design and an expansive vision for sustainability.
With sustainability at the top of its must-have, this home and guest home is equipped and entirely powered by photovoltaics (Dual Purpose Cool Roof & Solar System).
Like most couples looking to create their dream home, they took to one of the most dependable home improvement resources out there, PINTEREST.
When it came to the design aspect of the home, they hired Vicky Charles of Charles & Co. They were obsessed with her choices of mixed fabrics, patterns, and textures that she had used on other projects, especially the Soho Farmhouse. They spent months examining different materials and colors to find the right combination that spoke to and encompassed the couple's vision. The design style eventually moved away from the traditional farmhouse aesthetic and became something more contemporary. It was switching out wrought-iron details for more dramatic ones like the client's crystal chandelier that crowns their guest house/entertainment barn.

We were not surprised when we read that 90% of these dynamic duos design ideas were identical. The couple hired architect Howard Backen of the AD100 firm Backen & Gillam Architects. Are you looking to enjoy a beautiful lush lawn this year? Whether you are looking for the real deal or are good with the new and improved artificial turf, we are giving you the down-low on what your lawn needs to maintain its luster. Our Pro Tip: You should have started in Spring! Fertilize your lawn: Start feeding as it warms up in late April or early May and feed according to the fertilizer package instructions throughout the summer months. Get rid of grubs: Use a long-acting grub killer to stop them in early May. Start a new lawn: Use seed, sprigs, or plugs to start lawns in the summer. Keep mowing: You'll probably need to mow more regularly in summer. Aerate hard soil: Aerating it in summer will allow air, moisture, and nutrients to reach your lawn's roots more easily. Water sensibly: Most lawns need regular watering during the summer to keep them green. If you think the grass is greener on the other side and you have made the invested in an artificial grass, let it be known there will be maintenance here too. While artificial grass needs a lot less care and maintenance than natural grass, grooming it regularly will, keep it looking as natural as possible. Do you have the Right Equipment? You will no longer need that pesky lawn mower but here are a few items you will need: hose, leaf blower, and rake. Turf Needs Tended to, too. Tending to fake grass quarterly is recommended, but if you have pets or kids playing on the turf, cleaning it more often will be essential. Brush Regularly: It’s the only way to keep your lawn looking natural so brush it regularly. Rinse Frequently: Artificial grass can be rinsed with water as and when needed to get rid of debris and other waste. You can also use a mild detergent on especially dirty spots and then hose down the turf with water. Eliminate Stench: Obviously, you can’t let your turf stink. If pet urine or excrement is making the turf smell, clean the area with an enzyme cleaner. You can also hose down the area with a mixture of water and a household deodorizer like vinegar. Use Weedicides: Weeds can grow even after installing artificial grass. Be proactive and treat the turf to weedicides every once in a while. Installing artificial grass can be very expensive. Nevertheless, a synthetic lawn is a practical investment as it can help you save time and money in the long run.
