The Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars of the castle explores the achievements of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, while outside are distinctive gardens and spectacular parkland designed by ‘Capability’ Brown. The castle also has a gift shop and a tea room.

A poignant reminder of the possibility of peace, even in the darkest times, the Christmas Truce of 1914 was a spontaneous event during World War I. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, soldiers from opposing sides - primarily German and British troops - emerged from their trenches and met in no man’s land. They exchanged greetings, sang carols and even played informal football games. We visit the Frelinghien site of the football truce with our Battlefield Guide to see and learn more about this remarkable event. Staying in De Panne, a charming coastal town in the West Flanders province of Belgium, we also experience the Last Post in Ypres and Ghent and Bruges Christmas Markets.
Day 1
We catch the ferry to Calais and journey onwards to our hotel in De Panne.
Day 2 – Ghent Christmas Market
Discover De Panne this morning, before heading to Ghent this afternoon for a magical experience at the city’s Christmas Market. Held in the historic city centre, the market features over 150 wooden chalets offering a variety of goods, from handmade crafts and unique gifts to delicious local food and drinks. Enjoy traditional Belgian treats such as waffles, chocolates and mulled wine while exploring the beautifully decorated stalls.
Day 3 – The Christmas Truce
We travel to the Frelinghien site with our Battlefield Guide. Located near the border between France and Belgium, this site marks one of the areas where British and German soldiers famously laid down their arms and celebrated Christmas together during World War I.
At Frelinghien, soldiers from both sides emerged from their trenches, exchanged gifts, sang carols and played football in no man’s land. This spontaneous and unofficial truce is remembered as a poignant moment of humanity amidst the horrors of war. This brief moment of peace and humanity amidst the brutal conflict highlighted the shared values and common humanity of the soldiers, despite the ongoing war. The truce was not universal, and fighting did continue in some areas, but where it did occur, it provided a poignant reminder of the possibility of peace, even in the darkest of times.
Today, Frelinghien stands as a symbol of hope and humanity amidst the horrors of war, attracting historians, tourists and peace advocates worldwide.
This morning we enjoy time at leisure in De Panne. Places to visit include the De Panne Belgian Military Cemetery and Adinkerke Military Cemetery. Or why not spend some time visiting the shops, boutiques and local bakeries where you can sample local delicacies? There is also a coastal tram nearby that offers a scenic ride along the beautiful coastline, connecting De Panne with other charming coastal towns.
In the afternoon we travel to Ypres, the scene of one the biggest battles in the First World War. Having been completely rebuilt after the war, it serves as a place of pilgrimage and memorial; there are plenty of museums and monuments to pay your respects and find out more about the town’s historic role. We show our respects at the moving ceremony held at the Menin.

Celebrate the Christmas season with an unforgettable wine-tasting, culinary sampling and shopping cruise! Starting with a tour of Cologne, we board our ship and begin a merry market-hopping tour along the Rhine. A perfect festive experience, not to be missed!
ITINERARY
Day 1
Overnight stay in Belgium on a bed and breakfast basis. Day 2 – Cologne Walking Tour & Embarkation We arrive in Cologne, where we enjoy a walking tour. From the charming Old Town to the vibrant Rheinauhafen district, there is much to see in this stunning city, known for its stunning Gothic architecture. The market is in the shadow of the mighty UNESCO Gothic cathedral and a delightful setting for some Christmas shopping. There is time for lunch before we board for the start of our four-night cruise.
Day 3 – Rüdesheim Walking Tour & Mainz, Rhine Located in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rüdesheim marks the end of old merchants’ routes and is famed for its wine. We enjoy a walking tour with our Cruise Escort, taking in highlights like the Drosselgasse, a charming alley of half-timbered buildings known as ‘The World’s Longest Wine Bar’ – ideal for sampling the region’s vintages. Visit the Rheingauer Weinmuseum or explore rustic taverns in the Old Town. At Christmas, the town glows with music, lights and glühwein. Later, we arrive in Mainz to enjoy the festive atmosphere at the Old Town’s Christmas market. In the heart of the Rhineland wine region, Mainz blends history and culture. Wander cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses, traditional shops, lively bars and cosy eateries in one of Germany’s oldest cities.
We enjoy a walking tour led by our Cruise Escort. Frankfurt is a city in transformation, where modern skyscrapers meet traditional German charm along the Main. Nicknamed ‘Mainhattan’, it offers distinct neighbourhoods to explore, from botanical gardens and cobbled streets to cafés, boutiques and museums. Or head to the Christmas market in St Paul’s Square, a festive wonderland of lights and cosy stalls.
Later, we sail into the Middle Rhine Valley. With vine-covered slopes, hilltop castles and riverside villages, it’s clear why this region became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
We arrive in Koblenz in the afternoon – perfect timing to explore the Christmas markets in the Old Town, just a short walk from the ship. Don’t miss the Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, a lovely stretch of Rhine promenade turned park, with monuments and sculptures from the 1800s. For a regional treat, try Debbekooche – once eaten by those who couldn’t afford goose on Saint Martin’s Day, now a beloved dish traditionally served with apple sauce.
We arrive back in Cologne where we disembark and head to Calais for our return journey home.

If you or your travelling companions have any mobility concerns, please inform us at the time of booking. It is a minimum requirement that you are able to climb the steps onto a coach unaided. We also hold accessibility information for each hotel, and are able to advise if lifts and/or ground floor rooms are available. Further details are shown in this brochure and are also available online at nationalholidays.com/accessibility. If you have any queries on hotel facilities in relation to mobility, please contact us immediately for detailed information. Please note: some of our tours, hotels or excursions may require some level of walking and/or mobility. As a general guideline, we recommend that you are comfortable to stroll for 20-30 minutes at a time. Concert, theatre and sporting venues typically have tiered seating with a number of steps to reach your seat. Lifts may be available to some levels and there may be a dedicated accessible area, although this isn’t guaranteed. Please be aware that some clients may find tours visiting older properties challenging due to the nature of the building. On our river cruises, there is no lift between decks on any of the ships, stairways are usually steep and at ports of call there will be some walking into town and city centres. If you are uncertain or would like more details, please call our friendly reservations team for more information on the specific tour you are interested in.
Please note: tour itineraries will be subject to local and government guidelines valid at the time of travel.
