an you believe the end of 2019 is here!

As we forge into a new year (and decade) it’s a nice time to reflect on Just Cuts’ final year in our twenties.

As a company we have made significant investment into technology to make our clients and stylists lives easier. Being able to Check-In online or Check-In at one of our in salon kiosks has been key to our brand’s strong growth this year and more importantly the convenience it provides Clients. We have also completed a full brand refresh acknowledging our Aussie beach heritage bringing a modern, coastal feel to our salon design and JUSTICE Professional range.

The Just Cuts training and development road show for 3,500+ fully qualified Just Cuts Stylists has travelled around the world this year. We are delighted to have launched a state-of-the-art online learning platform for Stylists to stay up to date with current hair trends and Style Cuts. Well done to the significant number of Stylists that have already completed their training.

We are super excited to celebrate 30 years in business in 2020. 2020 is also exciting for me personally as I welcome my first child in January.

This year the Just Cuts Cut-a-Rama Cutting Crew travelled to Renmark, SA to meet the Outback Car Trekkers and raise money with the local community for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The annual Cut-a-Rama event took the chosen Stylists on a glamorous outback adventure all the way to Renmark, South Australia! A huge crowd turned out to Renmark Pub to raise money for a fantastic cause.

Cut-a-Rama is the kick-off event to the Royal Flying Doctor Outback Car Trek, held the night before the charity trek commences. 5 Stylists from Australia and New Zealand joined Just Cuts in-house Stylist Claire Lavelle on the journey from Sydney to South Australia to lend their cutting skills to the highenergy event that is Cut-a-Rama.

Wild hairstyles and great memories were created to prepare the drivers for the trek.

The highlight of the night was the donation of $30,000 presented by Just Cuts Founder Denis McFadden to the RFDS. “This was the 21st Cut-a-Rama event that we’ve put on. We’re so proud to be able to support a charity that impacts the lives of so many people across Australia.We’re thrilled to announce that tonight’s donation takes Just Cuts’ total fundraising tally for the RFDS to over $500,000!”, said Denis McFadden,CEO and founder of Just Cuts™ and dedicated Outback Car Trek trekker.

When did you first join the Just Cuts Community and how did you become an Owner?

We opened our salon in The Hub, Hornby in late July 2016. The process took a good 18 months as the salon was a brand-new shop in a new mall extension in the existing Hub. Michael was the Team Leader at the Westfield Riccarton salon at the time, and consequently we saw the benefits of becoming Franchisees.

Michael has been a hairdresser all his life, having trained in London and France and we had full-service salons in Perth, Western Australia. We relocated to NZ to be nearer to family late in 2012.

What are some of the highlights of being a Just Cuts Owner?

The first highlight which gave us a huge buzz was winning Franchisee of the Year 2018 in Alice Springs at the National Conference. We were blown away!

And then to achieve back to back awards in 2019 - a very humbling experience.

Other highlights include the Owners’ Meetings throughout the year which gives us all the opportunity to network with fellow Owners, all who are wonderfully generous with their time and experience. It is a joy to work with people who are only too happy to help, advise and support you. That aspect of Just Cuts sets it ahead of all franchises, making your business life easier knowing there is someone merely a phone call or email away.

What are some of the difficulties you have faced as an Owner?

Staffing is always a challenge, regardless of where you are. However, Christchurch was hit badly by the earthquakes in 2011 and as Hairdressing Colleges were amongst the casualties, and many hairdressers moved either to the North Island, or overseas. It is, and always will be, the one big headache!

Otherwise, we manage in all other aspects of running the salon. We have an extraordinary Team now, happy, engaging, committed and energetic - we couldn’t ask for more! And ALL awards we receive belong to them!

Any tips for new Owners or someone interested in a Just Cuts Franchise?

Have this tattooed on your forehead if necessary, ‘JUST FOLLOW THE SYSTEM - DON’T REINVENT THE WHEEL!’ Just Cuts is what it is today - the largest hairdressing franchise in the Southern Hemisphere BECAUSE we follow the system! It’s all been done before, hundreds of times! And rest assured, whatever challenge or issue you as a new owner may have, someone’s had it before you and they will support you and give you all the advice you need.

How did you get involved in Just Cuts and how did you become Multi-Franchise Owners?

We started our Just Cuts journeys as Stylists back in 1995. Having grown up with both of our families being selfemployed, you could say it was in our blood. Becoming multi-unit Owners was a natural progression.

Q:

What are some of the highlights of being a Just Cuts Owner?

One of the highlights would be the friendships forged with other Just Cuts Owners. We have an incredible network and it’s like a big family. We believe that it is one of the strengths of the brand.

Another major highlight is watching the brand grow to what it is today. Just Cuts has evolved in many areas over the years, and of course, this is a given in the highly competitive hair and beauty industry. Who would have thought the brand would have salons in NZ and the UK?!

From humble beginnings, this is an incredible achievement.

Q:

Any tips for new Owners or someone interested in Just Cuts Franchise?

Firstly, do your homework and make sure you understand “the numbers”. When you’ve committed to the brand we can’t stress how important it is to follow the Just Cuts system. It’s that simple!

The easy fashion look to achieve at home.

Apply a small amount (about the size of a 10-cent piece) of JUSTICE Professional Smooth & Groom through the mid-length and ends of your hair, then comb into place a middle part and braid each side.
