“Côte d’Azur, June 1, 1968.

Actress Catherine Deneuve is standing on Pampelonne beach, near Saint-Tropez, for the shooting of La Chamade by Alain Cavalier, adapted from the novel by Françoise

Sagan

Joyful, bold-faced and romantic, a young woman with long blond hair smiles, confidently, at her future. It is a certain form of magic that Catherine Deneuve embodies – pure, incandescent and sometimes transgressive. It is this unspeakable magic that the 76th International Film Festival conveys with this timeless poster. To reiterate the glorious present of cinema and to envisage its future full of promise. Catherine Deneuve stands for what cinema should never stop being: elusive, daring, irreverent. Something self-evident: a necessity.” ©FDC

KERING AND THE FESTIVAL DE CANNES WILL PRESENT THE 2023 WOMEN IN MOTION AWARD TO ACTRESS MICHELLE YEOH

François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO of Kering, Iris Knobloch, President of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Frémaux, Director of the Festival de Cannes, have chosen this year to pay tribute to Michelle Yeoh’s exceptional career by presenting her with the 2023 Women In Motion Award. The ceremony will be held in Cannes during the official Women In Motion dinner to honor women in cinema. Since its launch during the Festival in 2015, the program has been rewarding and highlighting the creativity and unique contribution made by women in culture and the arts - whose work helps to transform our vision of the world.

A Malaysian-born actress and producer of international renown, Michelle Yeoh has been shattering conventions for decades. By portraying complex, determined women on screen, she has helped to challenge gender and age-related stereotypes in the film industry. For her incredible performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, she won the Golden Globe, the SAG Award and the Academy Award for Best Actress. In

2023, she thus became the first Asian actress to win an Oscar in this category. When taking the stage to accept these awards, Michelle Yeoh gave vibrant speeches, touching on key issues such as diversity, racism, and ageism. “I believe that times are changing. There is much more inclusivity. There is more diversity. Look at me. I’ve been in this business for 40 years and I finally get to be number one on the call sheet. It just shows that if you believe in yourself, if you believe, and you have passion in what you do, you don’t give up.” And she added, as a nod to some of her great roles: “Whatever that glass ceiling was, we just ninja-kicked it out, we shattered it… We are at a crossroads. Change has already begun.”

“Through her iconic roles, Michelle Yeoh has managed to shatter every stereotype. Together with the Festival de Cannes, we wanted to recognize her significant contribution to cinema, and her ability to inspire future generations of talent. Presenting her with the Women In Motion Award was the obvious choice.”

STUDIO 100

FILM

ADDS “NORTH” TO ITS FILM SLATE

Germany’s Studio 100 Film is adding a new project to its animation film slate: “North”. Produced by PictoryLand, the Norwegian CGI film is currently in pre-production with delivery planned for Q4 2024, just in time to make it the perfect family movie for the holiday season. Studio 100 Film will cover all worldwide film sales except for the Scandinavian territories and will introduce the project, showing the first teaser and art designs of the characters and set locations, at this year’s Marche du Film in Cannes.

“North” is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale “The Snow Queen”, bringing to life the power of courage, persistence, and the endlessly redeeming potential of true love. The exciting adventure is aimed at kids and families with a runtime of 85 minutes. Directed by Bente Lohne and produced by Haakon Gundersen (Flight of the Navigator, Free Jimmy), the film follows the journey of the young girl Gerda, who embarks on a dangerous mission to save her best friend Kai from the Snow Queen’s icy grip.

Thorsten Wegener, Head of Business Operations, Studio 100 Films commented: “We feel extremely inspired to add ‘North’ to our slate and introduce audiences to the magical world of Gerda and the Snow Queen. The film’s heartwarming story, stunning animation, and talented cast and crew make it a mustsee for families during the holiday season in 2024 and beyond.”

BLACK MASS

A true-crime thriller inspired by real events,  Black Mass  is set over a 24-hour period in Florida during the winter of 1978, and follows a serial killer in the days leading up to his final, unhinged rampage. The film intends to provide a disturbing and terrifying look into the warped psyche of a notorious murderer, as well as the ramifications of his violence for those who fell victim to it, and for those who survived.

SOMETIMES I THINK ABOUT DYING

Fran likes to think about dying. It brings sensation to her quiet life. When she makes the new guy at work laugh, it leads to more: a date, a slice of pie, a conversation, a spark. The only thing standing in their way is Fran herself.

Directed by Rachel Lambert

Sales: New Europe Film Sales

“Black Mass aims to tell a famous serial killer’s story from a perspective that has not yet been done - by spending a day with the victims,” says director Devanny Pinn. When Devanny first approached me about this project, I was so inspired by her passion and commitment for sharing her vision and making this film. The deeper we got into the development of this project, the important to both of us to honor these women as the beautiful people that they were; filled with hope and love... and life. They were real people, not just victims,” says producer and actor Michelle Romano. In attendance at the festival will be director Devanny Pinn (an award-winning actress and producer who has been active in horror for over a decade) and Black Mass stars  Andrew Sykes (Speechless), Sarah Nicklin (The Retaliators), and Michelle Romano (Spoken Word), the latter who also produced the film.  Sarah Nicklin, who portrays a real-life survivor, says of her role, “It was very important to me to capture the essence of the person my character is based on. I want the audience to feel her warmth and light, and how brightly she shined, so that they can understand how devastating and truly evil the events that happened to her were.”

Black Mass also stars Lew Temple (The Walking Dead), Jeremy London (Party of Five, 7th Heaven), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and 5), Kathleen Kinmont (Halloween 4), and Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist), among others. Brian Perera, Yvonne Perera, Brandon Slagle, Gigi Jankowski and Miranda Mariposa are executive producers. Tim Yasui is co-producer, and Anjanette Miller and Susan Lanier are associate producers. Pinn directs from a script written by Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle

Black Mass has set its market screening on  May 21st, 2023 at 6:15 pm (Palais J).

Yes, there are plans to bring some of our stories to the big screen and streaming platforms. We are working on several projects that could become TV series or films, and we are collaborating with some very talented producers to make it happen. We are both very excited to see our stories come to life on a bigger screen and reach an even wider audience. However, there are still many things to be defined and discussed, but we hope to have news to share with our readers and fans very soon.

MOONBUG LAUNCHES NEW ‘MINIBODS’ CHANNEL, A SPIN-OFF OF GLOBAL PHENOMENON ‘ODDBODS’

THE NON-DIALOGUE SERIES WRITTEN BY AN AWARD-WINNING TEAM WILL SHOW PRESCHOOLERS HOW TO EMBRACE INDIVIDUALITY AND CELEBRATE DIFFERENCES

Moonbug Entertainment, a subsidiary of Candle Media, recently launched a new channel, Minibods, on Saturday, April 15th on YouTube. Minibods is a non-dialogue, slapstick preschool comedy series that follows the adventures of six furry friends who bring the silly to every situation and overcome life’s hurdles in unconventional ways.

Building on the success of 3-time International Emmy-nominated Oddbods, which has nearly 30 million YouTube subscribers across its various dedicated channels, Minibods comes from a team of awardwinning writers and is targeted at young kids and families who want to enjoy some fun and humor together.

Minibods features five beloved characters from Oddbods – Bubbles, Jeff, Newt, Pogo, and Fuse – along with new addition Lulu.

Each episode is told from the perspective of one of the six Minibods as they go through adventures and face kid-relatable obstacles, such as learning how to ride a bicycle and baking. Episode learnings are focused on the social-emotional development of preschoolers through ‘accidental learning,’ which teaches children by naturally modeling positive behaviors.

“At Moonbug, we strive to bring together humor, entertainment, and learning as we create characters, stories and worlds that captivate and resonate with kids across the globe,” said Moonbug CEO René Rechtman. “We are excited to expand on the world of Oddbods with the new fantastical world of Minibods and reach audiences with the same imaginative universe and new loveable characters.”

Show writers include BAFTA and Emmy Award winner Adam Redfern (Go Jetters, The Adventures of Paddington), BAFTA nominee and British Animation Award winner Dave Ingham (Lucas the Spider, Chip & Potato, Mush Mush & The Mushables), Jo Clegg (Hey Duggee, Gaspard & Lisa), and James Phelan (Oddbods).

The first episode is now live on the YouTube channel. The series will feature 39 seven-minute episodes with one new episode being released weekly every Saturday.

MIPTV ENDS ITS 60TH EDITION WITH ONSITE ATTENDANCE UP 22%

RX Franceannounced that onsite participation in Cannes was up 22% , compared to last year, for the 60th edition of the MIPTV Spring International Content and Co-Production Market.

Figures released on the final day of the annual Spring market confirmed 5650 participants from 86 countries including 5510 delegates in person in Cannes - an increase of 1000 onsite participants vs 2022 – and 120 delegates joining the market through the MIPTV online platform.

The increase in participation to this year’s market underlines a robust content sales and acquisitions climate, a rapidly developing international FAST channel business and positive response to the newly reformatted exhibition layout and schedule in the Palais des Festivals introduced in 2022, which, combined further, affirms MIPTV’s position each Spring as the biggest global television content market after MIPCOM CANNES

“We have found the right format and scale for MIPTV and its working” said Lucy Smith, Director of RX France’s Entertainment Division and Director of MIPTV and MIPCOM CANNES. “The increased attendance and robust exhibition confirm that the design and focus is paying off for all.”

“The benefits to all of having the international industry in one place to discover, connect and acquire is magnified by trends such as increased licensing to third parties, the pace of growth for FAST Channels internationally, and the ongoing hunger for, and necessity of, co-production partnerships - themes we will further build on at MIPCOM CANNES in October,” she added.

The next edition of MIPTV will take place  15 - 17 April 2024.

With more than 80% of the exhibition already sold, major global studios, platforms and content groups will be in Cannes in force in October, both in the Palais des Festivals and with major outdoor builds.

New plans for MIPCOM CANNES 2023 include:

- MIPCOM CANNES will move the Producers Hub & Lounge - the heart of Co-production, development and financing at the market –to a new and larger location on the Croisette Beach to accommodate more capacity and a broader programme.

- An October edition of the successful FAST & GLOBAL summit – building on the popularity of this week’s inaugural international FAST channel focus at MIPTV.

- Re-opening of the Riviera 9 sea view exhibition hall in response to the market’s rebound and increased demand for premium exhibition space in the Palais des Festivals.

“MIPCOM CANNES will again be the world’s greatest gathering of TV and Entertainment Executives on the planet,” added Lucy Smith, “confirmations have been streaming in early, plans are ambitious and all roads lead to Cannes this October.”
