WhenIwasalittlekid, likesomanyothers, Idreamedof beinganastronautforawhile. Iamstillamegaspace-nerd, butpursuingamusical careerseemed likeareasonablecompromise.Thepieceinyourhands, TheQuantumNomad,presentsamodern-eraversionof mychildhood dreams.
Today’sphysicsandcosmologyareleaguesbeyondwheretheywerewhenIwasbornthirtyyearsago.Weknowmoreaboutthecosmosand the fabricof realitythananyhumanbeforeushas. I’vebeenparticularlyinterested inprogressinthefieldof quantummechanics,aswellasefforts toreconcileitwithgeneralrelativity.Takenwiththenow-confirmed measurementof theexpansionrateof theuniversebytheJamesWebb SpaceTelescope, itiscleartomethatweareonthecuspof theNextBig Stepinphysics,and likelyallof thesciences.
Inquantumphysics,aparticlelikeanatomoraphotoncanbecomelinkedwithanotherof thesamekind.Thisphenomenoniscalledquantum entanglement,and ithassomeof themostexciting implicationsforfuturetechnologies. Instantaneoustransmissionof informationacrossvast distanceisoneof theseideas, becauseentangledparticlesremainsoevenatthegreatestpossiblecosmicdistancesfromoneanother.Thestate of onedeterminestheother.Thisalldirectlychallengesmanyconceptsinclassicalphysics. Einsteinfamouslyreferred toentanglementas “spookyactionatadistance.”
Now, thinkaboutsciencefictionstorieswhichfeaturesomeformof teleportationtechnology. It’snothard tomaketheimaginativeleapfrom thetheoryof quantumentanglementtoapractical technologyenabling teleportation.We’veseenothertechnologiesfromoldsci-fi becomereal (StarTrekpredicted thingslikevideochatting,wristcommunicators…)and itisnotunreasonabletothinkthattheymayall beapossibilitysome day.
TheQuantumNomad tellsasciencefictionadventurebasedonallof thiscurrenttheory. Itimaginesafuturekindof astronauttravelingallover theuniverseandexploring thevastreachesof timeandspace.Thesoloistinthepieceswitchesbetweentubaandeuphonium, mutedand unmuted, topresentslightvariantsintoneand timbre.Thesevariationsrepresentthechangesthatourastronautundergoesthroughouthis travels,duetotheeffectsof timedilationandgeneralrelativity.
Onewill hearafewabruptchangesof tempoaftertheseeminglysmoothjourneypresented bythefirstfewminutesof music. Electronicsounds imitatetheastronaut’sgearand heads-up-displayhelmetsounds, followed byepicpowerchorddrivenriffswhichaccompanythegrandeurof exploration. Suddenly,dangerstrikes,andourheromustfleefromanalienpirate.Theensuingstarshipdogfightisportrayed byanabsolutely crushingseriesof breakdownriffs,explosionsof sound mirroring theviolenceof thebattle.
Ultimately, theheroprevailsandreturnstoexploring thecosmos, butdangeralwayslurksintheunknown.That’swhatmakesanadventure exciting,andanyscienceworthdoing.
