During mytravelsacrosstheUnited States, Canada,and Japanin2024, Iwasinspired bysomething Iperceived innearlyeverycityIvisited. I observed thatpeopleintheseplacesweresoverysimilartoeachother.Thatistosay, Iexperiencedwhatcanonlybedescribedasthe fundamental kinshipwhichweallshare. I trulywitnessedeveryendof thespectrumintermsof wealthdisparities,accesstocleanwaterand nutritiousfood, housingavailability,andsoon. Ineverycity, though,onecould feel thatwill tolive, thatmostinstinctualof impulsesinherent inall living beings.
Weareall humans,sharing thisplanetwitheachotherandwiththemanyotherspecieswhichcall ithome.ThetitleTapestrypayshomageto thiswebof life,of whichweareastrand.Themusicweavesinandoutof differentemotionalstates.Attimesanxious,othersfierceand triumphant,wehumansfindourselvessurfing theseemotionalwaveseveryday.Theactionsthoseemotionsmotivateustotakeinfluencethe tapestryof lifeallaroundus.
Thinkof thebutterflyeffect:abutterflyflapping itswingsonedaychangestheinitialweatherconditionsjustenoughtogenerateatornadosome weekslater(thescholarEdward NortonLorenziscreditedwiththis).Abitof dialoguefromafavoritevideogamecharacterof minegetsata similarideapoignantly, too:
"Becarefulof charityand kindness, lestyoudomoreharmwithopenhandsthanaclenched fist…fromsuchsmall things, fromsuchcritical points, theuniverseand itsmassesmaybemoved...thatiswhyyou mustbecareful inall thatyoudo,and ineverychoiceyou make.”

Itisastartlingpossibilitytoconsider, thataperson’sintenttohelpmightultimatelyweakentherecipient. Of course, theoppositeistrue,and is likelymorecommon.Thesamecould besaidof a“clenched fist”approach:onecanfindexamplesof thispressureactuallyhelpingpeople. For anexample, theoverreachof anoppressiveregimecanlead toapoliticalrevolution,whichultimatelybenefitsagreaternumberof people. On theflipside,sucharevolutioncanresultinevenworseconditions. Examplesof bothcanbefound throughoutrecorded history.
Thepointisthateveryactionhasaconsequenceand noteveryoutcomecanbepredicted. Onemustconsidereverysignificantaction,andas manyinsignificantonesaspossible,aspotentiallyimpactfulontheworldatlarge.
Withoutventuring toofarintothemetaphysical, I believethateverysingleelementof theuniverseisconnected insomewayoranotherbeyond thecrudematterweseeinfrontof us.Afterall, if theBig BangTheoryisultimatelyprovencorrectbeyondallreasonabledoubt, theneverything wearemadeof camefromthesamesinglepointof spacetimeaseverythingelse.
Tapestryismyattempttocapturethiscomplicated,yetparadoxicallyand beautifullysimple,realityof life.
