“Cyclesof Convergence”wasdrafted inEl Paso,TX,andcomposed inasingle, brief writingsessionduringearlyMarchof 2025,somewherein NorthernCalifornia.Whileoutontheroadplaying bass, I knewIwasgoing tohavetomissmyformermentorPhil Sinder’sretirement celebrationatMichiganStateUniversityinApril.Whenheasked metowriteapiecefortheconcert, Iwashonored tobegrantedaplaceinthe events. I havetreasured thisopportunitytopaytributetoamanwhohashadsuchagreatimpactonme.
“Cycles” isaboutmorethanmytimeatMSU, thoughitdoesdirectlycorrelatetomyowntimeline.Thispieceis, morebroadly,areflectiononthe manywaysinwhichwedevelopand maintainbondswithinourstudios. Everyapplied instrumentalandvoiceteacherrepresentsathreadwhich becomespresentineverystudent’slifestarting fromtheirveryfirstlessononcampus.Westudentscarrytheinfluenceand thetraditionsof our teachers,passing themdownwhilesimultaneouslyuniting throughthem. Studying musicisaveryparticularexperienceinthatregard, because onecanimmediatelyconnectwithanotherwhostudiedwiththesameteacher.Theserepetitiousmomentsof convergenceuponeachother’s livesismaderelatableandpersonal becauseof thatsharedpieceof identityandexperience.
Itisquiteamazing tothinkthatthesimpleactof creatingorganizedsound bringssomanypeopletogether. I hopeyouenjoythesoundsthatyou maketogetherwhileperforming thispiece.
