Life is full of unexpected events, and we all long for the ability to see into the future. Instability and uncertainty can create volatility and frustration in our daily lives. In those moments, we turn to various sources of comfort, whether spiritual, religious, or coping mechanisms, to guide us down unexpected paths and help us find meaning in our pain. As we search for answers and ways to overcome grief and hopelessness, we may become desperate, clinging to any sign that our pain has a greater purpose and that things will get better.

In the spring of 2023, my friend gifted me a deck of Tarot cards during a time when I was vulnerable and in pain from losing someone dear to me. These cards provided me with the power to move forward and helped me to cope with my situation. I pulled six cards to reflect on my past, present, and future, which became the foundation and inspiration for my piece.

These six cards seemed to depict a journey from darkness to light, instability to stability, and painful changes leading to a stronger community. They became the foundation and inspiration for my piece, Fortunes Unfolded. Throughout the writing process, I felt a sense of moving forward, letting go, and growing.

Despite my realizations, growth, and learning, moving on is still a difficult task. Nights without sleep, vivid dreams, and the constant longing make it challenging to move forward. The final section of my work portrays this state of mind. While being able to see the future would be a great comfort, all I can do is hope for a better tomorrow. The piece concludes with me falling asleep, symbolizing my journey towards acceptance and peace.

I am grateful to the Bergamot Quartet for providing me with the opportunity to grow and develop, both as a composer and as a person.

The Tower- The old ways are no longer useful, and you must find another set of beliefs, values and processes to take their place. The meaning of these changes, foreshadowed by this card, will entail the comprehension of the truth, which will make you free yourself from false constructions in your life and determine the true value to yourself.

Judgment reversed- The reversed Judgement card can mean that you doubt and judge yourself too harshly. This could be causing you to miss opportunities that were awaiting you. Another reading of the Judgement reversal card can be a push to take time out of your busy routine to reflect upon your life to this point, and what you have learned so far.

Five of Pentacles reversed- The Five of Pentacles reversed is a positive omen if the asker feels they have been struggling lately. It is a sign of progress and that the Universe will be sending support. This card tells us to connect to our power and capabilities. This card signifies positive changes, recovery from loss, overcoming adversity, and forgiveness.

The Empress- The Empress shows us how deeply we are embedded in our femininity. Femininity could be associated with fertility, expression, creativity, and nurturing among many other aspects. The Empress card could also mean the birth of a new idea, business or project in your life. Owing to the good fortune that surrounds this card, you can be sure that such situations and projects would end successfully in your life.

Page of Swords- The Page of Swords represents communication, innovation and moving forward.

The asker may be brimming with new ideas or enthusiasm, and exploring ways to publicly share them. Carefully weigh the pros and cons.

Four of Wands- The Four of Wands represents joyful celebration, reunion and relaxation. This card signifies the asker has reached an important milestone on a project or achieved a goal. This card is also about family reunion, homecoming and feeling satisfied and safe at home. The asker may have recently returned from a trip or is finally ready to lay down roots.
