2019

for chamber opera in one act

Rhythmic speech is indicated by stick notation.

Performers should place the stressed parts of the sentence (indicated in bold) on the larger metric beats of the measure. The notated rhythms within the larger beats are suggestions for how the text may be performed, but do not need to be adhered to strictly, as long as the word stresses match the metric stresses.
Text in brackets indicates information to be data-mined from the audience using the system built by Alessandro Acquisti and Ralph Gross of Carnegie Mellon. i. e. [NAME]
Tablet Chorus is pre-rendered and can be triggered using the tablet software and database developed for the show by Joe Holt and Daniel Dickison of Bandcamp.com. Each tablet sings one line of the notated choral part. The chorus should consist of at least 18 tablets, which will allow the thicker harmonies to have at least three on a part. Ideally, tablets should be distributed around the space so that tablets singing the same part are not next to each other.
Spectators find themselves inside the company headquarters of Rix, a technology company. This place is designed so that employees will never want to leave. We get the sense we are on an upper floor in a cylindrical building. A circle of stations — conference room, casual work lounge, health club, CEO office with shower, etc. — surround a shiny bar, not unlike a Genius Bar but with actual cocktails. The Rix logo mark and typeface are much in evidence
Spectators take their seats at small bar tables. Each table is equipped with one rotating touchscreen tablet, like the ones for ordering food at airport cafés. The screens offer a free drink to each spectator in exchange for entering their email address and clicking “Agree” to a bunch of small print under the title “Terms of Service.”
This information then begins to be used by the backstage data-mining team, who are gathering information on targeted spectators, matching email addresses with faces using a combination of cameras in the space, facial recognition software, and the names under which ticket reservations were made.
Drinks are brought to the tables. When everyone has had an opportunity to be served, the music and ensemble transition into the opening number.
The top nerds in the universe are celebrating at their in-office saloon. Present are RAJ, who runs the company; his staff of GEEKS (ANNINA, BROOKE, and CHARLIE); and a newcomer, DOROTHY. RAJ grabs a mic.
Performing Forces
Dorothy ......................................................................................................................................................Mezzo-soprano a coder, new CTO of Rix
Ethan ...........................................................................................................................................................................Tenor a coder turned whistle blower
Raj .................................................................................................................................................Baritone with a pop belt head of the Rix
Annina ....................................................................................................................................................................Soprano a geek / Agent
Brooke............................................................................................................Soprano or Mezzo-soprano with a pop belt a geek / Journalist / Agent
Charlie ..........................................................................................................................................Baritone with a pop belt a geek / Agent
The Tablettes ...........................................................................................................................................................Chorus a chorus of computer-generated faces on the tablets at spectator tables. They seem to be the result of the marriage between a helpful digital personal assistant and a chipper musical theater kid.
