Performance Notes

is score is based in part on Indian classical music, including ragas and vocal percussion. For more about how these styles work, please see the accompanying study guide, which also contains the pitches of the ragas used in the score.

Singers

Choral sections are intended to be modular and readily adjusted to the size and comfort of the youth ensemble in each production. Begin by learning the melody part. If singers are comfortable, harmony parts can then be added. For choruses with young men, there are several sections with optional low voice parts that can also be added. Where the ensemble is in unison or indicated as high, middle, or low, singers can sing in the octave most comfortable for them. Where the parts are written in SATB, singers should sing in the indicated octave.

Sargam: (Sa Ri Ga Ma) is is the Indian form of solfege. Each vocable is a scale degree in the given raga.

All vowels are long vowels and the "r" should be ipped.

Konnakol vocables are inspired by drum strokes on the mridangam. Pronunciation: tha: [t]ɑ

ki: ki

ta: [t]ə

ka: kə

dhi: [dʰ]i

di: di

mi: mi

tai: [t]e

tham: [t]ɑm

In general, konnakol sections should be very assertive, almost yelled.

Spoken parts with notated rhythms should be as close to natural speech as possible. Body percussion includes claps and stomps. Stomps may change according to choreography, especially in the metta aduvu section.

Percussion

For groove based sections (i.e. chaal and cumbia) I have provided the basic pattern, but players can feel free to ll and ornament as desired.

Dholak: Rhythms are notated using the bol in addition to standard notation.

Performing Forces

Adult Roles: Raksha, matriarch of the wolf pack........................................................................................................................mezzo Baloo, bear, tutor to young wolves.............................................................................................................bass-baritone Bagheera, cosmopolitan panther, friend of the pack.........................................................................................soprano Hyena, a valley girl type, Shere Khan's henchman.............................................................................................soprano Shere Khan, a fearsome tiger..................................................................................................................................... tenor

Youth Roles:

NOTE: although youth roles are assigned specic pronouns for readability, all can be cast as either male or female; pronouns can be reassigned accordingly. Female Mowgli highly preferred.
