Program Note

is piece is structured to move through several Hindustani ragas that were chosen for their rasas and their similarity to the modes found in Irish traditional music. For example, Roisin Dubh uses a Dorian mode, which is similar to the Hindustani raga Ka. Ka is a beautiful raga used in many light classical pieces, particularly thumri. Anne's rst entrance is grounded in Dorian mode, while Savita is written in Ka. Additionally, the string writing for Savita's sections takes inspiration from several typical thekas (percussion patterns) including Dadra, Keherwa, and Rupak. By the end of the piece, Savita has moved into raga Todi, a highly chromatic raga that expresses deep pathos. Savita is most often accompanied by the cello.

e Irish instrument (in the premiere, an accordion) serves as a spiritual companion for Anne. e Irish tunes were chosen as Easter eggs for those familiar with Irish music. eir titles are all meant to correspond to the action of the piece, with the exception of the cheekily selected "Sheriff Muldoon's Jig,"which is simply in honor of our wonderful librettist.

Anne and Savita's musical worlds begin to overlap as their stories draw to their close, culminating in a nal duet.

Performing Forces

Savita...................................................................................................................................................................Soprano (Should be South Asian, preferably Indian). A dentist who has immigrated to Ireland, her death from sepsis in 2012 after being denied an abortion galvanized the country to amend its constitution.

Anne........................................................................................................................................................Mezzo-soprano An 18th-century Irish pirate who served on the ship of Calico Jack Rackham while disguised as a boy. She later escaped execution by claiming to be pregnat ("pleading the belly.")

Performance Notes:

Traditional Irish Musician

e accordion part is intended to be played by a specialist in Irish traditional music. As such, the transcriptions of the tunes in the score are a basic guideline to help the singers and ensemble follow along with the tune. As each Irish musician will have their own approach to these tunes, they will need to be adjusted (i.e. number of repeats, entrance of singer) to ensure that entrances and endings occur as close to the score as possible. is version of the score was created for Danny O'Mahony.

Free Time:

e X time signature indicates an unmetered bar.

Stemless noteheads are to be sung or played in a tempo and rhythm at the liberty of the performer.

Ornamentation:

JANTA is an ornamentation used in Carnatic music where the pitch is approached using a strong upward gesture from the note immediately below it. In this score, it is indicated with a scoop:

MEEND is an ornamentation used in Hindustani music. It is executed by sliding between the pitches without rearticulating the individual notes. In this score, the unarticulated pitches are shown with diamond noteheads:

e Carnatic song referenced in the score is "Enna tavam sheidanai, Yashoda." Feel free to add your own ornaments as desired.

Electronics and Amplication:

e electronics are intended to be cued in real-time using a program that can loop. is can be QLab, Ableton, or a similar program.

Vocalists and all instruments are intended to be amplied to balance with the electronics.

Manjira:

e Manjira is a traditional Indian small cymbal. If a manjira is not available, a bell or other small cymbal can be substituted.
