TEXT

First Seed (Text by Michael Pollan) (Desire- Now came roses that resembled aroused nymphs, tulip petals in the shape of daggers, peonies bearing the scent of women.) In time human desire entered into the natural history of the flower, and the flower did what it has always done: made itself still more beautiful.

Magnolia (Text by Kamala Sankaram) Evamaria was the first woman to bring forth yellow, Cross Yulan and cucumber tree.

Second Seed (Text by Michael Pollan) We gazed even farther into the blossom of a flower and found something more: the crucible of beauty, if not art, and maybe even a glimpse into the meaning of life.

Hatazakura (Text by Roy Lancaster) Petal, sepal, bract, leaf It grew in a garden beside the road, its branches soaring above the boundary wall in a great wave, which in spring carried an abundance of pink single blooms ahead of the coppery emerging leaves. Bold and brazen in the sheer exuberance of its blooming. I enjoyed it then, delighting in its exuberance and charm, and was always sad to see its brief spring beauty fading Come autumn its leaves changed from green to a blaze of bonfire shades that burned ever brightly and then were gone, leaving only the bare branches dark against the sky. Its appearance each springIts leaves staining red the black forest and lighting like flares the gray mist of dawn. Its fragility and brief appearance remind the poets in us: Beauty is fleeting; life should be lived to the full.

PERUSALSCORE

Third Seed (Text by Michael Pollan) Our grammar might teach us to divide the world into active subjects and passive objects, but in a coevolutionary relationship every subject is also an object, every object a subject.

Weeping Beech (Text by Kamala Sankaram) Weeping We tattoo We possess We carve Into the beech, not an inch of bark unspoiled — Jose and Liz. Alhue loves Rina Melissa, J + K, Amalia y Carlos, Tamaka, Dee, Mum, MKA 55, Diego Heaven

Fourth Seed (Text by Michael Pollan) It has become much harder, in the past century, to tell where the garden leaves off and pure nature begins

Dawn Redwood (Text by Kamala Sankaram)

Straight Red Needles like fossils

Like living fossils Forgotten Alone for millions of years

Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) Hidden in Hubei, Shuihsu Valley. Once, the valley was covered with forests, Now, one last stand still standing straight, red, hidden, but alive. Through ice, through war, hidden, but alive. And so we gathered the lentil-sized seeds, The first to grow here for two million years.

Fifth Seed (Text by Michael Pollan)

We are shaping the evolutionary weather in ways Darwin could never have foreseen; indeed, even the weather itself is in some sense an artifact now, its temperatures and storms the reflection of our actions. For a great many species today, “fitness” means the ability to get along in a world in which humankind has become the most powerful evolutionary force. Artificial selection has become a much more important chapter in natural history as it has moved into the space once ruled exclusively by natural selection.

ManGrove (Text by Michael Pollan) That space, which is the one we often call “the wild,” was never quite as innocent of our influence as we like to think…

Partly by default, partly by design, all of nature is now in the process of being domesticated— of coming, or finding itself, under the (somewhat leaky) roof of civilization. Indeed, even the wild now depends on civilization for its survival.

Taking Root (Text by Kamala Sankaram) Desire. Protect the wild spaces. Protect the seas and the forests. Protect the mangrove and the beech.

Michael Pollen text adapted with permission from the Botany of Desire

Roy Lancaster text adapted with permission from the introduction to Japanese Flowering Cherries
