Performance Notes

All glissandi should take the entire notated duration

Diamond notehead = light pressure with the left hand to add imprecise noise and harmonics to the sound (as in the example below). Indicated pitches are fretted pitches, not sounding pitches.

Horizontal bar = continuous heavy bow pressure

Diagonal bar = gliss with moderately heavy bow pressure.

Wedge = begin with heavy bow pressure and gradually decrease.

Leaf circle = aleatory. Repeat this gesture in your own time until the next cue.

V gliss = gliss in the indicated direction and then back.

Doit = Quick upward gesture from notated pitch. Should not connect to any following pitches.

Fall = Quick downward gesture from notated pitch. Should not connect to any following pitches.

Many of the musical gestures in the piece are taken from transcriptions of common bird and frog calls. I’ve included the names of the various animals in the score. Players should feel free to reference these sounds in their performance.

The Camperdown Elm is the oldest tree in Prospect Park. It is characterized by twisting branches that grow parallel to the ground
