We are delighted to partner with Diversify the Stand on this first collaboration of new musicReSounding Progress for Trumpet and Piano. As part of RIAM’s 175 Strategy, and as a direct response to Strategic Goal 1 to ‘Invest in Access and Inclusion for a modern RIAM’, we have been reviewing our syllabi with a view to finding and commissioning new works from a diverse range of artists. This publication marks one of the first steps on a challenging and significant journey of change. A step which we here at RIAM recognise the importance of, not least given our reach and influence with teachers and learners, artists, creatives, and audiences across the globe.

We would like to pay special thanks to Ashley Killam, Carrie Blosser, and the wider Diversify the Stand community for navigating and driving us through this process. Diversify the Stand provides accessible educational music for younger musicians by commissioning composers marginalized by race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, and orientation. We are privileged to be able to partner with them on this project, the result being a collection of interesting and unique repertoire for learners that will inspire, challenge, and support musical development.

For us here in RIAM, the experience of commissioning new works for brass students has been both exciting and inspiring. David has already been using Winds Of Change from DtS with his students over the last two years- the main motivating factor in reaching out to our friends in Diversify the Stand and saying, ‘Hey, here’s an idea…!’

A note from Diversify the Stand:

Diversify the Stand began when two trumpet players, Ashley Killam and Carrie Blosser, met in 2020. They both shared a passion for wanting to expand student trumpet musical libraries with pieces different than the standard cannon performed in trumpet repertoire. The Diversify the Stand team has grown, and so has its mission to be now a resource to provide accessible, educational solos by living composers with students, educators, and performers.

We are incredibly thankful to the Royal Irish Academy of Music for their desire to create this new collection of trumpet solos. The RIAM team was fantastic to collaborate with, and we look forward to continuing to build an international community of performers and educators.

reSounding Progress is a collection of 12 new works commissioned for beginner and intermediate trumpet players. Diversify the Stand is thankful to have worked with four incredible composers Melika M. Fitzhugh, Tyler Mazone, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, and Hope Salmonson. Each wrote three works that are progressive in difficulty. To the composers, we are thrilled about the pieces each of you wrote and cannot wait to see your works on young trumpet players’ stands!

We encourage performers to read about each composer and the inspiration behind their pieces.

Each solo takes the player on a unique musical journey.

We encourage you to support living composers, and specifically, here are two great ways to support the reSounding Progress composers: Purchase the book! Profits from each book sale go back to each composer.

Program these pieces and email the composer(s) a program from your performance. Composers receive money from a performance royalty organization for every performance of their music.

Sharing a copy of your program costs nothing as a performer and is so easy to do - composer’s emails are listed at the bottom of each solo, and they would love to hear from you!

Melika M. Fitzhugh

A native of Stafford, Virginia, Melika M. Fitzhugh (A.B. Harvard-Radcliffe, Music Theory and Composition; M.M. Longy School of Bard College, Composition) has studied conducting and composition with Thomas G. Everett, Beverly Taylor, James Yannatos, Julian Pellicano, Roger Marsh, Jeff Stadelman, and, most recently, Osnat Netzer and John Howell Morrison.

Performed internationally, Mel’s compositions have been commissioned by John Tyson, Catherine E. Reuben, John and Maria Capello, Laura and Geoffrey Shamu, Ex-Aequo, and the Quilisma Consort, and have been performed by those artists as well as B3: Brouwer Trio (Valencia, Spain), the PHACE Ensemble (Vienna, Austria), Quarteto Larianna (São Paulo, Brazil), Sarah Jeffrey (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), the Radcliffe Choral Society, Patricia Reuben Abreu, Berit Strong, Miyuki Tsurutani, LIbor Dudas, and Aldo Abreu.

Mel was a 2021 Bang on a Can Fellow, the 2020 winner of the PatsyLu Prize for IAWM’s Search for New Music, and the 2014 winner of the Longy orchestral composition competition. The artist has performed with the Radcliffe Choral Society, Coro Allegro, the Harvard Wind Ensemble, the Village Circle Band, and WACSAC. Mel, who has composed music for film and stage, was a member of Just In Time Composers and Players and is currently a member of world/ early music ensemble Urban Myth and the early music ensemble Quilisma Consort, in addition to playing bass guitar with acoustic rock singer/songwriter Emmy Cerra, the symphonic metal/ progressive band Illusion’s End, the ambient rock band Rose Cabal and the Balkan folk dance band Balkan Fields. Mel enjoys playing a variety of instruments for folk dance ensembles, including: violin/ viola; acoustic guitar/bass; recorders; flute; hand percussion including dumbek/djembe/cajon. Mel teaches these instruments, in addition to piano, violoncello, trumpet, clarinet and saxophone, privately.

Performance Notes

Commissioned by Diversify the Stand and the Royal Irish Academy of Music for beginner trumpet players (levels 2, 3 & 4).

Sostenuto marks in the piano part follow the bottom left hand note in part I; all chords should be rolled from the bottom. If a sostenuto pedal is not available, do not substitute sustain pedal: simplly shorten the lowest left-hand note. Favor the space between the staccato notes!

Unless otherwise noted, piano dynamics should match and support the trumpet.

Tyler Mazone

Tyler Mazone is a deaf and neurodivergent composer from New York State and is currently living in Michigan. He is working towards a Doctorate in Composition at Michigan State University and is a graduate of The Crane School of Music. Tyler writes mainly chamber, solo, and large ensemble music. His music has been played by ensembles such as The Crane Wind Ensemble, Michigan State University Bands, The ___ Experiment, and the US Air Force Band. His goal is to continue the work of accessibility and to reach a broader range of audiences and performers by improving upon the framework of inclusive practices in music. Tyler also enjoys performing solo and large ensemble music on the bass clarinet. Outside of music, Tyler enjoys various topics and activities such as science- astronomy in particular- video games, reading, hiking, and watching YouTube.

This piece is a spin on the usual grandiose fanfares, opting for a more steady and reserved character. Perfect entry theme for introverts!

Lake Reflections

Lakes are often fun places to go in the summer, but my piece is more about the lake on a foggy or rainy day without anyone there. The muted trumpet gives a more glassy sound, making it perfect to evoke the emotion of something more mysterious.

Finifugal

"hating endings; of someone who tries to avoid or prolong the final moment of a story, relationship, or some other journey." I'm a procrastinator so this cheeky piece and title really speaks to me!

Niloufar Nourbakhsh

Described as “stark” by WNPR, and “darkly lyrical” by the New York Times, winner of National Sawdust’s 2nd Hildegard competition, recipient of 2019 Female Discovery Grant from Opera America, and a winner of 2022 Beth Morrison Projects Next Generation Competition, Iranian-American composer Niloufar Nourbakhsh’s music has been commissioned and performed by Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Library of Congress, I-Park Foundation, National Sawdust Ensemble, International Contemporary Ensemble, Camerata Pacifica, Shriver Hall Series, Center for Contemporary Opera, Women Composers Festival of Hartford, PUBLIQuartet, Forward Music Project, Calidore String Quartet, Cassatt String Quartet, Akropolis Reed Quintet, and Ensemble Connect at numerous festivals and venues including Carnegie Hall, Washington Kennedy Center, Mostly Mozart Festival, Seal Bay Festival of American Chamber Music, and many more. A founding member and co-director of Iranian Female Composers Association, Nilou is a strong advocate of music education. In 2014, she worked as the site coordinator of Brooklyn Middle School Jazz Academy sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center. She is currently co-artistic director of Peabody Conservatory Laptop Orchestra and teaches composition at Longy School of Music of Bard College. Nilou also regularly performs with her ensemble, Decipher.

Nilou is a music graduate and a Global Citizen Scholarship recipient of Goucher College as well as a Mahoney and Caplan Scholar from University of Oxford. Among her teachers are Lisa Weiss, Kendall Kennison, Laura Kaminsky, Daniel Weymouth, Matthew Barnson, Margaret Schedel and Daria Semegen.

She received a Ph.D. in music composition from Stony Brook University under the supervision of Sheila Silver.

Hope Salmonson

R E

Composer Hope Salmonson is queering her music through a cross-genre artistic voice and an emphasis on establishing musical community. Her approach embodies ideas of musical joy, placing equal emphasis on elegant composition and camaraderie onstage. She weaves accessible musical language and contemporary approaches to musicking, seeking meaningful collaborative experiences. Through her interactive compositions, Hope seeks to ensure that every voice in the room is valued, on and off the stage.

An import from unceded Mi'kmaq territory (Halifax), Hope is spreading her wings on Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh lands (Vancouver). After receiving her BMUS with Distinction from Mount Allison University, her graduate studies at the University of British Columbia have seen her studying with Drs. T. Patrick Carrabré and Jennifer Butler. She is already sparking relationships in the Pacific Northwest, composing for small and large ensembles in the Vancouver area.

However, she has never forgotten her Atlantic home and continues to strengthen connections across the land. She's written for classical ensembles, a street brass band, and various points in between.

Participating in the Lunenburg Academy of Music, the Wildflower Composers Festival and as Composer-in-Residence at the 2021 UNB Contemporary Music Festival, she's had no shortage of musical adventures.

Amid this, Hope continues to explore music in all its facets. In addition to performing her own works, she is active as a wind band tubist, chorister and recreational jazz drummer. She seeks to uplift underrepresented composers in all facets of her practice. This has led her to work with the TubaEuphonium Social Justice Initiative as Resource Manager. Outside of music, Hope is an avid board & video game fan, and enjoys sharing good food with her loved ones.

I. Reginald, the Toad Jester

This is Reginald, the Toad Jester. He travels far and wide, hopping to and fro, to find new stories to tell his friends back home. However, today our bug-eyed friend is the star of his own story.

II. Reginald, the Pensive Poet

Reginald sometimes needs to make up his own tales. To gain inspiration, he’s been known to watch clouds, smell flowers, and sleep, dreaming up new wondrous ideas.

Of these options, he mostly prefers to sleep. And eat flies, but that doesn’t help him think of stories.

III. Reginald, the Absolute Rascal

However, Reginald often winds up getting ideas from his own misadventures. He hops so much, he practically bounces off the walls! Ants and birds take cover to make sure their houses aren’t toppled by this clumsy acrobat
