Program Notes
The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise by Sun Tzu that has greatly influenced both the Eastern and Western military tactics, business strategy, philosophy and more. It is a highly regarded piece of literature around the world.
The Last Breath is my musical interpretation of a small bit of Sun Tzu’s writings. At the time, I was reading through the work in search for text for a different piece, but I happened to stumble across two sentences of advice that I found to be both challenging and inspiring. They serve as the basis of the piece:
“Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. . .
. . . Thereby you can be the director of the opponent’s fate.”
