Begin with no pitch - scratch/noise only - and gradually decrease bow pressure to produce tone again
gradually add bow pressure to eventually produce a scratching sound with no pitch
gradually add bow pressure to eventually produce a scratching sound with no pitch and then gradually back to tone again
slowly add bow pressure and accelerate the amount of pressure added towards the end to suddenly produce a scratching sound with no pitch.
PROGRAM NOTE
This was the first piece I wrote after my family and I moved from Philadelphia, PA, USA to Valencia, Spain. At the same time, the Trump administration had just taken office for the second time.
Transitioning to a new culture, country, and way of life, especially with 3 young children, is difficult enough, but to watch helplessly from afar, as your country - your old home - changes abruptly, exchanging goodwill, opportunity, and decency for blatant corruption and cruelty is jarring, heart-wrenching, and difficult to process. The ever-increasing division among the American people, along with the difficulty in assessing truth in social media and the press, adds to the chaos.
This is my reflection and response to this time.
