Obsidian Glimmers was commissioned by Dr. Julia Bell, Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Texas Tech University (who kindly funded this project). Her request was a piece that would be appropriately challenging for undergraduate level students during juries and early college performances, but also fun! I centered the piece around concepts of mixed meter rhythms, tuning octaves, and steady double tonguing.
As a concept, Obsidian Glimmers jumps to the heart of the juxtaposition between light and dark. The gemstone Obsidian is a black stone that refracts in the light, creating a glimmering effect. I wanted this piece to celebrate that light in the face of darkness.
