“Intrinsic light” is a term for the colour or sensation we experience in complete darkness, due to the spontaneous activity of neurons in the retina. My goal with this piece was to represent this phenomenon through sound. Re ecting on this concept prompted a deeper, metaphorical realization: even in times of darkness, we are able to observe, generate, and experience light, and that coming together to make music is one of the ways in which we can do this. When I was a high school student, I participated in the Ontario Provincial Honour Band and performed at the annual OMEA conference. It was a formative experience during which I was surrounded by others who were there out of a genuine desire to share their love of music– a beautiful example of “intrinsic” motivation. It has been ten years since I graduated from my high school music program, and ve years since completing my post-secondary studies in music, and I am endlessly grateful to have been part of the music education community in Ontario. Music teachers are some of the unseen superheroes of this world, and it was a huge honour to have been asked to write music in celebration of their work.

Notes for the conductor: Players with singing in their parts should sing the written pitches in any comfortable octave. Please note that these parts are transposed so that players are able to play the written notes on their instruments for reference.

If your ensemble does not have enough percussionists to cover all parts, prioritize the parts to the best of your ability with the resources you have, with the following consideration:

The mallet percussion parts contain a hemiola starting at rehearsal letter H. It is crucial to have both rhythmic patterns covered, so if possible please ensure that you assign one part which has sixteenth notes (vibraphone or marimba 1) and one which has eighth note triplets (glockenspiel or marimba 2). The tempo shift at rehearsal letter H should feel like a shift to half time, in which two quarter notes from m91 are equal to one quarter note from H onward. The accelerando from m88-91 is to facilitate this shift. Similarly, at rehearsal letter I, one eighth note in m105 is equal to one quarter note from letter I onward. The pulse should stay the same from H until the molto rit at m128. In celebration of the OMEA’s 100th anniversary, I have quoted the melody to “Happy Birthday” in m109-113 in clarinets 1-3, trumpets 2-3, and chimes. The chord in m132 is a direct quote from the nal chord of Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E- at, Movement 1: Chaconne.
