Instrumentation:
Boreal Pines was commissioned by Ashley Brockway and the Ecole McTavish High School Concert Band to commemorate the fth anniversary of the devastating 2016 wild re in Fort McMurray, Alberta. This forest re forced the evacuation of 88,000 people and had lasting impacts on all who call Fort McMurray home.
SA L
Fort McMurray is situated within the Boreal Forest, which is a bioregion that supports an extensive network of plants, animals, and fungi. The coniferous forests of this region are resilient and, in many cases, have adapted to depend on re for regeneration. Some species have cones which only release seeds under extreme heat; a forest re can set this cycle of the forest into motion. The pines of the Boreal Forest are known for their ability to bounce back after hardship, and so are the people of Fort McMurray. This piece consists of nature-inspired imagery and re ects the mixed emotions of the community as they rebuild: aleatoric passages represent uncertainty, while hopeful melodies encourage nding and creating light within the darkness.
Notes to the conductor:

Proceeds from every purchase of this piece are donated to Tree Canada’s Operation ReLeaf, an ongoing program supporting the recovery of forests and communities that have been impacted by wild res.

The aleatoric passages (notes within bold boxes) are meant to be played repeatedly for the durations marked in the score and parts with the "ad lib" lines. Rather than playing continuously, it will sound more natural, musical, and magical if everyone leaves a little space between each of their phrases. Encourage the musicians to take the time to listen to each other and respond intentionally with their own musical statements. The notes are provided, but players should feel empowered to explore both slower and faster pacing of these phrases. This textural effect should be present but not overpower the harmonic and melodic lines. Copyright © Cait Nishimura (SOCAN) All rights reserved.
