Bloom was inspired by the courage of wild owers that bloom in the snow, in the cracks of the concrete, or in the wake of destruction– against all odds and despite adversity. This piece was commissioned by the Toronto Montessori School Modern Music Ensemble, directed by Rachel MacDonald. Their request was for a piece of original concert music that felt like a pop song, something both fun and educational. At the work's core is one of the most common chord progressions found in popular music (I - V - vi - IV), with melodic fragments that represent themes such as unity, growth, and perseverance.
