I. Red sky at morning, sailor take warning. Red sky at night, sailors’ delight.

Great lakes hold our blue summers in their deeps, they store the sunlight in their many waters.

The lakes store sunlight in their many waters and, autumn come, return it to the welkin.

Red sky at night, sailors’ delight. Such magic, these sentimental evenings.

Come autumn, we return it to the welkin. Send up our prayers like letters rolled in bottles.

There is such magic in these sentimental evenings, the dead beside us in old-fashioned clothes.

Send prayers for them, like letters rolled in bottles. In turn, they warn us of fall winds from north or west.

The dead are with us in their finest clothes, each man telling his story.

II. Beware the bolts from north or west, in south or east the bolts be best.

Like every Great Lakes storm, this one begins in the iron-cold mouth of a November witch.

PERUSALSCORE

Warm winds from south and east are best but these winds blew in from the west

as though from the iron-cold mouth of a witch; they gyred, they roiled.

Early winds came from the west around midnight. Ports raised white pennants.

They gyred, they roiled, the wind whirled into blizzard

around midnight, and ports raised white pannants. Rainbow to windward, foul be the day.

The wind had turned to blizzard but then, a lull. Clouds parted, long ships traveled.

III. Rainbow to windward, foul fall the day, rainbow to leeward, rain runs away.

A lull while long ships traveled masts thawing through the Straits of Mackinac.

PERUSALSCORE

Rainbow to leeward, rain runs away: that bright Sunday rose up clear,

But all day, through Harbor Beach the murmuring gray.

That bright Sunday began spring-clear. There were more than forty ships on the water.

By night a howling gale rinsed out their coal and ore.

There were more than forty ships on the water, crews and crews of men in heavy coats, their coal and ore. Divers are still coming with fresh wreckage.

Coda

All those ships and sons under the water.

Red sky at morning, sailor take warning. Red sky at night, sailors’ delight.
