eLatinimperativeverbexaltatemeansto"exalt"(toholdinhighregard)andto"praise"(toexpressthathighregard).eorgan,sohighlyvaluedin contemplativeandsacredspaces,isaninstrumentthatcanexpresspraiseofthesacredandinvitecontemplationofourhumanity.Inthisendeavor,Ihold theaptlynamedKingofInstrumentsinthehighestregard.ispieceexpressesthatregardwithacelebrationoftheinstrumentandthosededicatedtoits expressivepower.

FanfareExaltateopenswithaheraldicfanfareoveraBbpedal,followedbyacontemplative,lyricalantheminEbmajor.Flowingorganicallyfromthis anthem,theorganleadsthebrassonachromaticallyadventuroustoccata-fantasia,exploringandtransformingpriormotivicelements.ereprise-returnof theanthemisinectedwiththelushchromaticismgainedinthefantasia,buildingtoanalourishinwhichtheorganandbrassexaltinthejoyofmusical communion.

ewordexaltatecanalsomeanbothto"deepen"(tointensify)andto"raiseup"(toelevate).roughoutthework,stepwiseascendinganddescending scalarmotivesmelodicallytraversethisraisinganddeepening,outliningtheintervalsofaperfectfourthandaperfectfth.eseintervals,togetherwith theoctave,aretherstthreeintervalsofthenaturalovertoneseries(integraltobrassinstrumentsandorganalike),thepartialsofwhichformedthemelodic basisofhistoricalfanfaresplayedonnaturalhorns.Astheanthemowsintothefantasia,thesimplemeterof2/4(duplebeatsubdivision)intensiesinto thecompoundmeterof6/8(triplebeatsubdivisions);withaclosejuxtapositionof2/4and6/8,thismetrictensioniselevatedtoitshighestdegreeinthe nalourish.Overthecourseofthework,theinitialkeyofEbmajorisintensiedthroughthechromaticexpansionofitsscaledegrees,elevatingEbfrom asimpletonictoachromaticallyrichtonalcenter.

FanfareExaltatewascommissionedbytheAmericanGuildofOrganistsfortheBiennialNationalConventioninSaintLouis,Missouri,2026.ework wascomposedspecicallyforitspremieringinstrument,CasavantOpus3838,andorganist,JanKraybill.Casavant-Frèresdesignedthe3manual,42-stop instrumentwithPrincipiaCollegeProfessorEmeritusofMusic,JohnR.Near,aWidorandFrenchorganliteraturespecialistwhoenvisionedanorganthat would"reectmanyofthetenetsfoundintheorgansofCavaillé-Coll"(Diapason,May2006,p.30).Kraybill'stranscriptionsonherGRAMMY-nominated album,eOrchestralOrgan,captivatedmethroughhernuancedregistrationswhenIrsthearditseveralyearsago.Discoveringthatshewouldbe performingthisworkpromptedafundamentalquestionincomposingthispiece:shouldIomitregistrationmarkingsaltogetherasanopeninvitationfor herto,inaway,transcribethepiece?Whilemyhappycuriosityfortheresultingtranscriptionwastempting,Iultimatelychosetobeasspecicaspossible withmyregistrationmarkings,workingfromtheOpus3838stoplist(attemptingtobalancebrightnesswithwarmth,powerwithclarity,andorganwith brassquintet)asanevenmoreearnestinvitationforhertranscription:inessence,myregistrationmarkingsserveasmy"orchestration,"offeringup texturalandtimbraldetailsthatmightclarifythearchitecturalspiritofthepieceandinformhermusicalinterpretation.Iwarmlyinviteanyorganistwho ultimatelyplaysthispiecetofollowtheirownuniquemusicalityintheirregistrationchoicesindialoguewiththeirinstrument;indoingso,theywillelevate thespiritofthepieceanddeepenitsmusicalexpression.
