Program Note
e idea for this commission emerged after talking to students at Westinghouse College Prep. When asked to describe their community, the students offered a variety of adjectives that ranged from vivid, loud, warm, soft, etc; a wonderful mix of symbiotic phrases that were sometimes at odds with each other, but worked together to form the whole.
Chiaroscuro employs the use of light and dark to create depth — opposites making one beautiful whole. In singing, we use this term to describe the balance of forward and back resonance to create a tone. is piece makes use of opposing music forces (dynamics, instrumental families, themes, etc.) to symbolize the community of Westinghouse College Prep, and the beauty of individuality that makes that community.
