Program Note

Self-Talk (2018, arr. 2024) is a piece about the stories we tell ourselves—our inner voice, our commentary on our own actions and emotions. Each movement depicts a different manifestation of self-talk. e rst movement, “Fable,” musically illustrates how one might learn about themselves over time through trial and error. e rhythmic material of this movement was constructed from a line of poetry from Jim Harrison’s Suite to Fathers: “I was a fable to myself.” e second movement, “Transformation,” explores how one's perspective shifts over time, embodied by the melodic transformations heard after each musical interruption. e nal movement, “Pursuit,” celebrates progress toward a dream or goal and the unexpected twists and turns one might experience in pursuit of it. Many thanks to Alex Scott for commissioning this chamber winds version of Self-Talk.

Note on Instumentation

is version of Self-Talk was commissioned by Alex Scott as a companion piece, in both instrumentation and specic instrumental features, to the Walther Lampe Serenade for chamber winds, for which Alex has created a critical edition. My approach in arranging Self-Talk alludes to the Lampe through English horn and bass clarinet highlights, attention to the contrabassoon as an independent part, and passages of pastoral warmth. I am grateful to be both in dialogue with and contributing to this body of chamber winds repertoire.
