KYZIA WALCOTT Kyzia W. is a professional freelance model, dancer, actress, vocalist and inspirational speaker. She is a young adult who wants to do big things. She is currently taking my basics at Houston Community College and wants a doctorate in Speech Pathology. When she was three years old, she was in car accident with my father. She suffered a crossed eye and a head injury. As Kyzia got older, she never felt beautiful or confident in herself. As she struggled through hurdles like failing the TAKS test three times and forgetting things that were said, she gradually found confidence inside herself. Wanting to show others how to feel beautiful and confident in themselves, it was hard for her to find her confidence and inner beauty. But, as time progressed, she found that inner beauty and now share it in all she does. She started modeling a little over a year and a half ago and is proud to say she has ripped more than 20 different runways in the Houston, TX area. Kyzia says she should have been dead and praises God to have made it this far in life. As she does everything she needs to do, she wants kids, teens and young adults to see God’s beauty inside them and build their self confidence. She currently holds many roles in different non-profit organizations and projects and works as a modeling and acting coach for BB Productions and Studios. Kyzia always say, “I love what I do with all my heart. Its not just my business, but my ministry.”

Sweet Potatoes Are Perfect For Diabetics Sweet potatoes are an excellent choice for diabetics since they contain natural sugars that decrease and stabilize the insulin resistance in diabetics. They are also good for the regulation of the sugar levels. The sweetness of this potato comes from the beta-carotene. The body uses it to produce vitamin A, and that is the reason why it is referred to as Provitamin A. Sweet potatoes are rich in dietary fibers which are good for digestion. They also prevent colon cancer and help with constipation. Sweet potatoes contain carotenoids which help in producing Vitamin A. This vitamin regenerates the respiratory system. So, people with respiratory problems, especially smokers should consume sweet potatoes more often. Vitamin D is also contained in sweet potatoes. This vitamin is good for the teeth, heart, skin, bones, energy levels as well as for the normal function of the thyroid gland. In general there can be an improvement of the heart functioning with the help of the potassium. This vitamin lowers the impact of the sodium, regulates blood pressure and makes a balance of the electrolytes. The sweet potato has Vitamin B6 that prevents heart attacks, strokes and degenerative diseases. The potassium in the sweet potatoes is good for healthy tissues and muscles. It also helps in reducing swelling and cramps, provides with energy and relaxes the muscles. It also regulates heartbeats and nerve signals. Beta –carotene in the sweet potato acts like an anti –oxidant. It helps with arthritis, gout and asthma, protects against lung and breast cancer and it also reduces aging effects. Since sweet potatoes are rich in folic acid, they are a great source of folic for healthy fetal development. Pregnant women should consume more sweet potatoes. The potassium content in potatoes increases the flow of oxygen, regulates the balance of the body’s water and normalizes the heartbeats. The magnesium content on the other hand acts as an anti-stress agent. Vitamin C is crucial for the entire body’s function and sweet potatoes have abundance of it. Sweet potatoes are also rich in iron that has a crucial role in the producing of red and white blood cells. That’s why they help against anemia. Did you know that you can use the water from the boiled potatoes for treating your skin? Especially for irritation of the skin, cleaning the pores and absorbing impurities.

MODEL: TAMMY SHENELL PHOTO BY: DAMON REDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Tammy Shenell PHOTO BY: EMEX FOCUS

Tammy Shenell 1.What makes you unique from everyone else? My dna. We are all different. No two are the same. I’m professional. I’m reserved in a business that is social. I’m the type of person who can walk into the room and doesn’t feel the need to make friends..i do what i’m there to do and go on about my business. I don’t do “cliques” ..i do me! I mingle when i need to though. 2.How long have you been modeling? 4 years 3.Do you have any limitations when you are modeling and why? No nude! I’ll consider semi nude. 4.Can anyone be a model? My father use to say “Whatever you put your mind to you can do it.” The only word i would add to that is “Dedication”. You must be dedicated and not just going through the motions. I believe a lot of young ladies think you have to be tall in order to model but that’s not true. Now, runway, yes you need to be 5’9 and taller. Print and commercial modeling you can be under 5’9. Its really up to the agency and clients and what their looking for at the moment. 5.Do you have a meal plan to keep yourself in shape? Actually, no i don’t. I naturally eat a lot of baked meat - not fried unless i’m craving frenchys or popeyes lol. My favorite go-to snack anytime of the day is fruit and nuts trail mix...so yummy! 6.What kind of exercise do you do to stay fit? I’m thin as it is so i don’t require a heavy workout routine. My focus is toning my body. I love to walk, lift dumbbells, and do multiple leg exercises. 7.How many fashion shows have you done? Somewhere around 35-40 fashion shows. Majority in Houston. I’m excited this year mainly because i will be participating in fashion shows outside of Houston! 8.What kind of advice can you give to ladies who are wanting to model? Do your research. Know what to expect. Be ready to hear criticism. Explore YouTube..i did! Model advice is all over YouTube. One i’m subscribed to is “Howcast” 9.What is your biggest accomplishment as a model? I was voted “Top 100 Young Professionals 2015” by Young Houston Magazine and i was awarded “Top 50 Black Model” by D Mars Magazine. I was truly honored because i wasn’t expecting it at all. That just goes to show you extraordinary individuals (CEO) watch you in silence! 10.What is your story behind all you do? To be honest, i wanted to be a hairstylist at first because i spent most of my younger years at my stepmother salon in Hiram Clarke. Then i switched up to wanting to be a singer once i knew i could sing a little something something lol i didn’t consider modeling until family, friends and coworkers constantly told me i had “the look” and of course the height. I’ve always been a fan of fashion magazines too.

10 reasons the U.S. is no longer the land of the free

Every year, the State Department issues reports on individual rights in other countries, monitoring the passage of restrictive laws and regulations around the world. Iran, for example, has been criticized for denying fair public trials and limiting privacy, while Russia has been taken to task for undermining due process. Other countries have been condemned for the use of secret evidence and torture. Even as we pass judgment on countries we consider unfree, Americans remain confident that any definition of a free nation must include their own — the land of free. Yet, the laws and practices of the land should shake that confidence. In the decade since Sept. 11, 2001, this country has comprehensively reduced civil liberties in the name of an expanded security state. The most recent example of this was the National Defense Authorization Act, signed Dec. 31, which allows for the indefinite detention of citizens. At what point does the reduction of individual rights in our country change how we define ourselves? While each new national security power Washington has embraced was controversial when enacted, they are often discussed in isolation. But they don’t operate in isolation. They form a mosaic of powers under which our country could be considered, at least in part, authoritarian. Americans often proclaim our nation as a symbol of freedom to the world while dismissing nations such as Cuba and China as categorically unfree. Yet, objectively, we may be only half right. Those countries do lack basic individual rights such as due process, placing them outside any reasonable definition of “free,” but the United States now has much more in common with such regimes than anyone may like to admit. These countries also have constitutions that purport to guarantee freedoms and rights. But their governments have broad discretion in denying those rights and few real avenues for challenges by citizens — precisely the problem with the new laws in this country.

The list of powers acquired by the U.S. government since 9/11 puts us in rather troubling company. Assassination of U.S. citizens President Obama has claimed, as President George W. Bush did before him, the right to order the killing of any citizen considered a terrorist or an abettor of terrorism. Last year, he approved the killing of U.S. citizen Anwar al-Awlaqi and another citizen under this claimed inherent authority. Last month, administration officials affirmed that power, stating that the president can order the assassination of any citizen whom he considers allied with terrorists. (Nations such as Nigeria, Iran and Syria have been routinely criticized for extrajudicial killings of enemies of the state.) Indefinite detention Under the law signed last month, terrorism suspects are to be held by the military; the president also has the authority to indefinitely detain citizens accused of terrorism. While the administration claims that this provision only codified existing law, experts widely contest this view, and the administration has opposed efforts to challenge such authority in federal courts. The government continues to claim the right to strip citizens of legal protections based on its sole discretion. (China recently codified a more limited detention law for its citizens, while countries such as Cambodia have been singled out by the United States for “prolonged detention.”)

Arbitrary justice The president now decides whether a person will receive a trial in the federal courts or in a military tribunal, a system that has been ridiculed around the world for lacking basic due process protections. Bush claimed this authority in 2001, and Obama has continued the practice. (Egypt and China have been denounced for maintaining separate military justice systems for selected defendants, including civilians.) Warrantless searches The president may now order warrantless surveillance, including a new capability to force companies and organizations to turn over information on citizens’ finances, communications and associations. Bush acquired this sweeping power under the Patriot Act in 2001, and in 2011, Obama extended the power, including searches of everything from business documents to library records. The government can use “national security letters” to demand, without probable cause, that organizations turn over information on citizens — and order them not to reveal the disclosure to the affected party. (Saudi Arabia and Pakistan operate under laws that allow the government to engage in widespread discretionary surveillance.) Secret evidence The government now routinely uses secret evidence to detain individuals and employs secret evidence in federal and military courts. It also forces the dismissal of cases against the United States by simply filing declarations that the cases would make the government reveal classified information that would harm national security — a claim made in a variety of privacy lawsuits and largely accepted by federal judges without question. Even legal opinions, cited as the basis for the government’s actions under the Bush and Obama administrations, have been classified. This allows the government to claim secret legal arguments to support secret proceedings using secret evidence. In addition, some cases never make it to court at all. The federal courts routinely deny constitutional challenges to policies and programs under a narrow definition of standing to bring a case. War crimes The world clamored for prosecutions of those responsible for waterboarding terrorism suspects during the Bush administration, but the Obama administration said in 2009 that it would not allow CIA employees to be investigated or prosecuted for such actions. This gutted not just treaty obligations but the Nuremberg principles of international law. When courts in countries such as Spain moved to investigate Bush officials for war crimes, the Obama administration reportedly urged foreign officials not to allow such cases to proceed, despite the fact that the United States has long claimed the same authority with regard to alleged war criminals in other countries. (Various nations have resisted investigations of officials accused of war crimes and torture. Some, such as Serbia and Chile, eventually relented to comply with international law; countries that have denied independent investigations include Iran, Syria and China.) Secret court The government has increased its use of the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which has expanded its secret warrants to include individuals deemed to be aiding or abetting hostile foreign governments or organizations. In 2011, Obama renewed these powers, including allowing secret searches of individuals who are not part of an identifiable terrorist group. The administration has asserted the right to ignore congressional limits on such surveillance. (Pakistan places national security surveillance under the unchecked powers of the military or intelligence services.) Immunity from judicial review Like the Bush administration, the Obama administration has successfully pushed for immunity for companies that assist in warrantless surveillance of citizens, blocking the ability of citizens to challenge the violation of privacy. (Similarly, China has maintained sweeping immunity claims both inside and outside the country and routinely blocks lawsuits against private companies.)

Continual monitoring of citizens The Obama administration has successfully defended its claim that it can use GPS devices to monitor every move of targeted citizens without securing any court order or review. (Saudi Arabia has installed massive public surveillance systems, while Cuba is notorious for active monitoring of selected citizens.)

Extraordinary renditions The government now has the ability to transfer both citizens and noncitizens to another country under a system known as extraordinary rendition, which has been denounced as using other countries, such as Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Pakistan, to torture suspects. The Obama administration says it is not continuing the abuses of this practice under Bush, but it insists on the unfettered right to order such transfers — including the possible transfer of U.S. citizens. These new laws have come with an infusion of money into an expanded security system on the state and federal levels, including more public surveillance cameras, tens of thousands of security personnel and a massive expansion of a terrorist-chasing bureaucracy. Some politicians shrug and say these increased powers are merely a response to the times we live in. Thus, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) could declare in an interview last spring without objection that “free speech is a great idea, but we’re in a war.” Of course, terrorism will never “surrender” and end this particular “war.” The indefinite-detention provision in the defense authorization bill seemed to many civil libertarians like a betrayal by Obama. While the president had promised to veto the law over that provision, Levin, a sponsor of the bill, disclosed on the Senate floor that it was in fact the White House that approved the removal of any exception for citizens from indefinite detention. Dishonesty from politicians is nothing new for Americans. The real question is whether we are lying to ourselves when we call this country the land of the free. By Jonathan Turley

Q: Who is Gloc9 The Bad Guy and what separates you from other Artist? A: There are only a few degrees of separation in any artists as it is. A crime of passion describes a scorned lover acting out in a fit of rage who lashes out for a moment ends in bloodshed. Did that person do it out of love or hate? I don’t know other than my own personality and personal relationship with my creator there isn’t a whole lot. I create things the same as they do. Sometimes I just do it a lot better. Q: Do you write your own music? A: My lyrics, the body content of my songs, I write 100%. I’ve collaborated on musical & visual compositions whether Melody, hooks, beats, arrangements & shading, painting and inking. My art is really personal and really i have to have confidence in a person to forge something collectively that’s probably going to exist long after we are gone. Q: Where is Gloc9 The Bad Guy from? A: Houston, Texas and in particular a neighborhood called Carverdale. My father sustained critical injuries when i was a child at a neighborhood store. He from a stand alone block called Thomas Road. In the early 80’s there was rivalry between Thomas Rd. & Carverdale. My mom was from Carverdale so they had somewhat of a hood romeo and juliet type situation. Things got crazy and he got 7 knife wounds and had to be shocked back to life 2 times. He survived. Even though he wanted revenge he swallowed his pride and decided me and my mother was more important than bangin out and moved us. He wanted me around blood on Thomas Road and he did but my Carverdale roots kept calling me back. Q: How long have you been doing music ? A: In all about 30 years if including church choirs and church groups but maybe 15 professionally Q: What gives Gloc9 The Bad Guy the drive and inspiration to keep pushing in such a competitive industry? A: Well I’ve fell back in love with my ability’s and i appreciate them a lot more. When you say “competitive” the root of that word is “com” or prefix “co” which means “with”. As in “compare”. I learned not to compare what i do to anyone elses art. I do what i do for people who appreciate what i do. I allow myself too express me. The people who identify with what i create are who I’m concerned about. Honestly my new project “The Rite II” would not even exist if my reapah brother, Keenan didn’t ask me to do it. He liked the space i was in on the previous installment so i honored that. despite we go years without seeing or talking to each other i can still reach him through recordings. Q: Who are your musical influences ? What would we find on you iPOD or music player ? A: I have a cousin we call Wimp. His dad is my uncle Sonny & our Grandmother, Wilma (R.I.H.) of The Stewart Singers always influenced me. They were pure and never saw the perverted side of the industry. They just enjoyed music. Brad (Scarface) Jordan, K-Rino, KB da Kidnappa, David Sha and my cousin StroSounds all have had a hand in my influence as well. Far as what i listen to, is mostly beats. Lol. But there’s some Tec N9ne & Strange, T.I., Dark Lo, Twiztid, Rick Ross and maybe a few more indies. When I’m on sum fly shit it’s Kirko Bangz or Drake.

GLOC9 THE BAD GUY

Q: If there was any advice that you could give to up and coming artist what would it be ? A: I would say, figure out what you’re in this for & stay consistent. Also take advice but don’t allow people to dictate what you want. 8. Is Gloc9 The Bad Guy single or taken ? A: My heart is with someone but we beg to differ on a lot of things so I’m single. Q: Can you give us a brief run down of the history of music and Carverdale ? A: We got a big homie, “Stylie” who recognized us when we were in our early teens who is a rapper. He was passing through and saw us with a radio on the porch of a bando rapping. He told us meet him later that day and had a bunch of other hustler cat’s come through and listen to us. They congregated that evening and decided they wanted to push us. Our homeboy, pepe, started managing us. It was cool for a while then alot of them got indicted. So we had to go on our own. We did pretty good to be so young. My cousin Andre (R.I.H.) Set up a meeting with his mutual cousin that just so happened to be J. Prince. Lol we performed for him at a relatives house while he had Sunday Lunch. He gave a standing ovation. He wanted us to come back with 14 songs and gave us a contract. We didn’t end up signing cause our parents couldn’t get on the same page but it was still an honor. I wouldn’t mind being the face of the mob if they make a come back (shameless plug with no pun). Q: What projects are you working on now ? A: Rock Star 9 (me) & Rock Star McClain (my lil brother) finished our Rock Star Summer (which is the name of the duo) album titled “Rock Star Season” and another solo effort titled “The Rite II”. Q: Where does Gloc9 see himself 5 years from now ? A: The way they allowing cops to down black men in the streets and all these fickle minded ass nigguz doing the silly shit they doing, i think the question should be is “where do i not want to see myself in 5 years?” But I’m living in a space rite now where time exist but I’m dealing with the cycles of time in a different relevance so i can’t give you an accurate answer to that. Q: Are there any artist that you would like to work with or see yourself working with in the near future? A: Any Strange Muzik artist, T.I., Travis Scott, The Game, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Bone Thugz, Zach Dela Rocha, Yelawol, Everlast and I’d actually like be the Southern addition to Slaughter House Q: Is there anyone you would like to give a shout out to? A: Shout out to Love and Hip Hop Houston. FWM

The NIMBY Project is an inspiration from the documentary "Not In My Backyard." The documentary takes viewers into battered women and children shelters across America. Throughout the voyage, you see the reality of these women, teens, and children who seek survival in a country that ignores this epidemic. This is the first time cameras were allowed in the shelters, let alone the underground shelters. Producer and Human Activist Jacquelyn Aluotto produces the documentary not only to expose the truth but to give 100 percent of the proceeds to save these shelters. The movement is headstrong with celebrities, activists, communities and artists across the nation. Famous Actor Luis Guzman is a spokesperson for the "Not In My Backyard" documentary. The NIMBY Project also will feature a TV docudrama to makeover shelters. On June 29, 2011, we are shooting the PSA for the project. We invite you to become involved in making a difference in the world. Help stop poverty, abuse and homelessness. Help educate and heal those that suffer in our own backyard. 50 percent of homeless people are women and children fleeing abuse. 23-40 percent of the homeless are veterans. 1.6 million children in America are without a home.
