CONCEPT In Syracuse, almost 15 million cigarette butts are littered onto the streets each year, at parks and kindergartens alike. Unconcerned, the cigarette industry continues to grow, along with the hyper-capitalist obsession with continual growth, construction, and capitalizing on vice and desire. Leached with toxic chemicals, our natural terrain continues to decay. My proposal takes the form of a machine-park that upcycles cigarette butts into sculpture via the mode of crow.

STRATEGY Cellulose acetate is an untapped resource, a plastic that can be 3D printed into building material. The Dutch, ever innovative, have already pounced on this opportunity. Corvids have even been classically conditioned via automated machines to pick up cigarette butts in exchange for food.

The park itself is a paradoxical site of desire - a perfunctory desire to maintain nature for selfish, human-sized enjoyment, for leisure, for smoking, for littering. Born from this paradox, my experimental circular system of cigarette butts and crows initiates regrowth and decay, generating cellulose acetate sculptures for leisure on the backdrop of manufactured, self-cleaning nature.

CONCEPT The wine industry continues to grow, and the demand for wine with it. The natural terrain continues to be drained of nutrients and polluted. The site of the Ammo Depot at Deer Haven Park is a testimony to this, with its long military history and the resulting contaminated soils. If all the land is contaminated, where do we find the environment to grow grape vines? Wine is a strange artifice of both the luxury consumption of capitalist structures and the natural, unaltered terrain. An experimental wine machine is proposed, mediating this paradox to ensure wine-making and wine tourism survive, in pollution, cold or drought. 1. HARVEST

STRATEGY This machine is one driven by desire, spaces engineered to provide the ultimate sensual satisfaction for tourists. It is also a category killer, a year round full wine tour experience designed to beat all existing competition. It is a vindication that people can continue to consume whatever they desire on the devastated land of the future.

and it provided a perfect opportunity to explore the possibility of an experimental wine tour that can operate regardless of climate, soil or air condition.

The tourists are objects within this machine of desire, forced to look inwards on the beauty of this fantastic WineWorld. Inspired from the design of casinos, the pre-fabricated fly ash concrete panels offer limited views outside, through very specifically curated views, such as with the top enjoyment deck or the fermentation train.

CONCEPT Immigrants’ occupancy needs change and expand over time, as extended families end up sharing the same house over several generations. The project follows idea of the “unfinished”. Each of the housing units have an unfinished portion, which, while unfinished, performs as a localised greenhouse or second-skin to offset cooling and heating loads in temperate Ithaca, and while finished operate as extra rooming or function rooms for extended families.

STRATEGY The community is sited in a suburbian neighborhood, not far from the commercial district of the city. The complex is situated around the Immaculate Conception Charity, which was originally sited here. The Charity already facilitates immigrant nationalisation programs, and we propose a new immigrant center around which the housing units are oriented, offering these serivces and more. On the east end the complex is bordered by a primary school and a recreational center for the neighborhood, Hence, it was important to maintain circulation and open-ness between and throughout the neighborhood programs and the complex. The aim is to allow residents and local merchants alike to occupy commercial spaces within the first stories to allow for continual assimilation and contact with the local community, whilst creating a sense of inner community within the residents themselves.

CONCEPT The Canopy is a community rowing boathouse sited in the Finger Lakes Region of Ithaca, New York. The structure itself is inspired from the continuous set of rigid frames of the neighboring Farmer’s Market, and aims to mediate the relationship between land and water through a series of thresholds that divides top and bottom into public and private, open-air and enclosed. This set of frames is covered by a poly-caronate canopy to provide public gathering spaces in case of inclement weather conditions, and to act as a ‘communal beacon’, lighting up the pier and adjacent park during the night-time.

STRATEGY The structure extends as a longitudinal structure, offering boat programs in the void of the first floor, and offering the semi-private programs of the training gym, cafe and bathrooms on the hermetically sealed second floor. The drawing below is a narrative and program study of rowers and their affiliated users, which informs the consequent design of the boathouse.

05 | VERTICAL MACHINATIONS

CONCEPT

LODGING FOR TWO

From the rich industrial history of Ithaca, the site of the gorge was abstracted into modular, vertical elements as a conceptual basis for the design.

A system was developed to navigate up and down this man-made gorge. The counterweight pulley system functions as both traversal vehicle but also epistemological recording tool for the topography of the site.

STRATEGY The final residence is a synthesis of the two exercises. Modular living spaces are vertically oriented to allow occupants to navigate around this stilted residence, allowing for changes in program and lighting. The steel supports, corrugated ceiling and roof decking, as well as vertical machine elements pay homage to the strong industrial heritage.
