EDITOR’S NOTE

Members are our Masterpiece. That’s the idea behind this year’s artwork cover. When the Publications team met with JLLR President Jennifer Goss earlier this year, she was adamant about using this year’s Interaction to highlight all of the great work of our amazing members. And we couldn’t agree more!

As someone who began her League career at the Junior League of Baltimore, I can honestly boast that JLLR has one of the most active membership bodies that I’ve ever encountered. Both in the League and throughout the city, our members are committed to making an impact in our community. And we’re ever evolving! Not only have we seen tremendous growth in terms of diversity of membership, but we’re ushering in a new era of innovative ideas that will help guide us as we seek to continue to be a thriving League leading into our 100th anniversary.

So this issue of Interaction serves as a thank you to all of our members! With every volunteer hour and membership obligation, you all are painting the collective work of art that is known as the Junior League of Little Rock. Thank you for helping to create a masterpiece.

Meagan Davis Cover Artist Meagan Davis is the owner and operator of Davisdrew, LLC, specializing in custom art and live event painting. She also serves as an attorney for Pulaski County. This year, Meagan is chair of the Cookbook Committee and is involved in a variety of local organizations that support the arts, including SHARP (Arkansas Symphony Orchestra), the Contemporaries (Arkansas Art Center), and the 601 Club (Arkansas Repertory Theatre).

In her spare time she enjoys painting, cooking, reading, and all things outdoors. Meagan also loves spending time with her dogs, Gus and Percy, her fiancé Jack, and friends and family.

BY THE NUMBERS Little Readers Rock 3,559 books provided to children during 2018-2019. 750 people attended the Literacy event, 802 books were given. 2,565 books were handed out during reading days at the 7 STB schools. First Little Library opened on May 17, 2019.

A Moment with JLLR President

Jennifer Goss Jennifer Goss continues to carry out her and the board’s mission of putting members first by focusing on creating a culture of satisfied volunteers.

I hope you enjoy a glimpse into the heart and mind of our President.

What was your reaction when you learned you had been selected as President Elect?

I had a moment of pure panic — how was I going to lead an organization of 1,000 women effectively? Once the moment passed, I was and am still thrilled about this opportunity that JLLR has allowed me to do.

What’s it like in the boardroom when everyone’s eyes are on you?

Empowering. The League’s board members I serve with are strong, smart, and continue to put our members first, and I am fortunate to facilitate the meetings monthly as we have thoughtful discussion around League decisions.

How was the first half of the year?

The first half of the year has been nothing short of aweinspiring. Our membership has personified our mission, and committees have collaborated with each other to better serve community. I am proud to represent the League this year and showcase to the City of Little Rock what we are all about.

What lessons have you learned?

I always take time after each meeting, event, or conversation to determine how I could have better handled the situation and I adjust. No person is perfect (and I am no exception), but the most important part of leadership is to understand when you fail, learn from those mistakes and adjust how you handle the next situation that comes your way.

FUN FACTS ABOUT JENNIFER WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SEASON IN ARKANSAS? Fall. I love the leaves changing colors!

FAVORITE MOVIE IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS? The Greatest Showman. I love watching it with my niece and nephew.

WHO SHOULD EVERYONE BE FOLLOWING NOW? Brené Brown. If you have never read one of her books, I would highly recommend them!

LEAST FAVORITE PIZZA TOPPING? Mushrooms.

SONG LYRICS TO LIVE BY? “Even the genius asks questions.” —Tupac Shakur BIRD WATCHING OR WHALE WATCHING? Bird watching! Love a chance to see cardinals or blue jays at the house.

FAVORITE CAFFEINATED BEVERAGE? Iced white mocha from Starbucks or Diet Coke.

WHAT WOULD YOU NAME YOUR BOAT IF YOU HAD ONE? My family has a boat, it is named “Bobbin’ Along” for my grandpa who loved being on the water.

A BOOK YOU READ IN SCHOOL THAT YOU’D NEVER THINK YOU’D READ? Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. I never thought I would like era-style writing but read several of her books throughout high school and beyond.

NEW CLOTHES OR NEW PHONE? New clothes.

WHAT’S WORSE: LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Both! If I had to choose—dishes (especially the ones that can’t go in the dishwasher).

Almost Three Decades of Holiday Spirit in Downtown Little Rock The League’s largest fundraiser continues to draw crowds by

For 29 years, the women of the Junior League of Little Rock have brought Christmas cheer to central Arkansas through Holiday House. This year, over 11,000 shoppers from across the state descended on the Statehouse Convention Center during the annual 4-day event to shop over 161 merchants from across the country. In true JLLR fashion, we kicked off this year’s event with the always popular Preview Party, which allowed eager shoppers the opportunity to be the first to take a look at our vendors. Throughout the week, we hosted our signature special events—Private Shopping, Ladies’ Night, Jingle & Mingle, and Doughnuts with Santa—along with general shopping.

While everyone loves shopping and getting in the holiday spirit with Holiday House, the true impact cannot be overlooked. The main mission of Holiday House is to raise funds to support JLLR and its community projects. Each dollar that is given towards Holiday House is another dollar that goes back into the community. Over the last 29 years, Holiday House has been able to collectively raise over 6.4 million dollars in net income. Thanks to shoppers, merchants, and sponsors, the joy of Holiday House is two-fold: everyone gets to enjoy time with friends and family while doing a little shopping, and they get to give back to the community as well.

As we turn towards the celebration of our 30th year, we look forward to what can and will be done through the efforts of all those that support Holiday House!

NURSING NOOK

Nursing Nook Whether in public or the workplace, supporting moms who breastfeed or pump is crucial.

For the third consecutive year, Junior League of Little Rock partnered with Healthy Active Arkansas (HAA) and Ethan Allen to host its Nursing Nook at Holiday House for nursing moms. Resulting from the opportunity to help normalize breastfeeding in the community and in public and focus on the League’s impact area of nutrition and wellness.

Breastfeeding Benefits:

• Reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes and post-partum depression for mothers • Reduced risk of childhood diabetes, asthma, diarrhea, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) for babies

Arkansas has two laws that support breastfeeding women.

Act 680: 20-27-2001.

Breastfeeding in public.

A woman may breastfeed a child in a public place or any place where other individuals are present. The 2007 law also amended the AR indecency law (Code 5-14-112) to provide protection from prosecution for indecent exposure.

Act 621: 11-5-116.

Break time for expressing breast milk.

Summary: An employer shall provide: 1) reasonable unpaid break time and 2) a reasonable private, secure and sanitary location other than a toilet and close to work location. The employee shall make reasonable efforts to minimize disruption to employer’s operations.

Back to School Basics with Boosters and Big Rigs Local Kids Get Healthy While Having Fun by

Ensuring that a child receives their annual wellness exam is a key component to their success in school. A student who has trouble concentrating in class may not know that he or she isn’t hearing or seeing as well as their classmates. Back to school screenings are important for young students because it can directly impact their ability to learn.

In August, JLLR partnered with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Children International to host Boosters and Big Rigs, our annual jamboree event that provides free health services to families in Little Rock. This year, our health and safety fair served over a thousand children from diverse backgrounds. JLLR also placed a special emphasis on

impacting students that attend the local schools that participate in our Stuff the Bus program, including Geyer Springs, Romine, Stephens, Watson, Chicot, Baseline, and Meadowcliff Elementary Schools.

Children and adults who attended this event received dental, vision and wellness screenings, along with other health resources. The event also provided children with an educational and fun opportunity to explore and “touch” community vehicles, such as ambulances, fire trucks, police cars and more. There were a variety of games and activities available at Boosters and Big Rigs, and children had the chance to win bicycles, receive school supplies, and were provided lunch.

JLLR, in partnership with UA Little Rock Children International, provided healthy snacks and lunch to all who attended, an opportunity to explore community vehicles, and health screenings, among other services.

Building Self-Confidence and Friendship at KOTA Camp Creating Connections for a Cool Summer by

Who doesn’t remember having fun at summer camp?

Whether you were a local camp regular or the closest you came to a meaningful camp experience was a Salute Your Shorts marathon on Nickelodeon, many of us have fond memories of spending time with our friends and bonding over s’mores and spooky camp stories.

For two weeks and two weekends each year, the Junior League of Little Rock’s KOTA Camp Committee comes together with Camp Aldersgate to bring that same level of excitement and joy to kids with and without medical, physical, and developmental diagnoses. Members of the KOTA Camp Committee worked with over 60 counselors, volunteers, and staff in order to provide an amazing experience for over 150 campers.

The goal at KOTA Camp is to serve campers by putting on fun activities, playing games and assisting during camp events. At KOTA, campers participate in a variety of activities including archery, canoeing, scuba diving, swimming, zip lining, and more! During their time at KOTA Camp, committee members do it all: provide decorations and serve a themed dinner at the annual KOTA camp dance, act as judges and facilitate tribal games, and give campers a once in a lifetime experience during the fishing derbies. Before campers leave, they receive water bottles and backpacks to encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle once they return home.

They also select from an assortment of developmentallyappropriate books to take home, so JLLR can be a part of making literacy fun even after they leave Camp!

JLLR is excited to continue our partnership with Camp Aldersgate to bring this once in a lifetime experience to children and families in our local community.

1922 Society Preserving our History, Ensuring our Future by

On the Junior League of Little Rock’s 95th anniversary, a new fundraiser was created. Named after the founding year of our League, the 1922 Society provides unrestricted financial resources for JLLR. The funds raised are directed towards supporting the continuation of our community programs, recruitment and retention of our members, training and leadership opportunities, and essential operating expenses. Because membership in the 1922 Society is open to anyone in or outside of the League (including men!) and because the funds can be used in very flexible ways, this fundraiser is a perfect complement to our current development efforts.

1922 Society members have the opportunity to network and meet JLLR members at several fun events throughout the year. The Spring Fashion Event was held in the ballroom at the JLLR building on April 10.

line. Sustainer and makeup artist Augusta Andrews from B. Barnett discussed spring makeup trends for all ages.

On November 7, the annual Holiday House Cocktail Social was held at the Capital Hotel. 1922 Society members enjoyed a social hour prior to kicking off Preview Party across the street at Holiday House. This was another great time to socialize with other members as a kickoff to the holiday season.

Nearing JLLR’s 100th anniversary, the 1922 Society will continue to provide an opportunity for our members and friends to directly support the mission of the League through generous donations. 1922 Society Chair Anna Ruth Douglass was drawn to participate as a founding member of the 1922 Society because she was “proud of what the JLLR does in our community: past, present, and future.” If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a part of the 1922 Society, there will be various membership levels announced after the first of the year.

Each level will have a different value and benefit, allowing you to choose the best fit.

Key to the Past The Founding of the Arkansas Arts Center by

In the mid-1950s, Jeane Hamilton, new to Little Rock, was asked by Junior League of Little Rock (JLLR) President Carrie Dickinson to serve as its Arts Chair.

After research on the needs of the community, the League initiated a campaign for funding a community center for arts and sciences. “We got permission from an appeals review board to raise $200,000 in Pulaski County from June 1959 to June 1960. Our schools were closed, and it was not a time that people thought we ought to go out and raise money,” said Hamilton.

During this campaign, the city of Little Rock was in turmoil— its high schools were closed to prevent desegregation, in what is now referred to as “The Lost Year.”

Hamilton’s challenge? To raise money for a community arts center at a time many citizens were concerned about the city’s future. One of the campaign’s first financial supporters was Winthrop Rockefeller, who wanted his support to be used for an Arkansas Arts Center. With his support as well as others’ and against all odds JLLR was able to raise the funds needed for the Arkansas Arts Center.

1 (14 oz) can chicken broth ¼ cup water

When I moved to Little Rock from New York City two years ago, I had several goals. One was to meet new and interesting people from different walks of life, and the second was to learn to cook authentic southern cuisine like a true Arkansan.

To get me started on achieving my goals, I purchased several of the Junior League of Little Rock’s cookbooks. My current favorite JLLR cookbook is Big Taste of Little Rock because there are five recipes for grits. Yes, you heard correctly.

FIVE GRITS RECIPES. I mean, there is no other sure-fire way to cook like a Southerner than to master grits, right?

Since relocating, I’ve been able to use the League to accomplish both of my goals.

JLLR has helped me make connections to other wonderful women in Little Rock, and I’ve used those friends to test my grits recipes. I’m happy to report that I am officially on my way to becoming an honorary Southern Culinary Belle just like the Pioneer Woman!

My current successful recipe is called Artichoke and Bacon Grits. Try it out tonight, and see what your friends and family think.

2 T butter 8 slices bacon (crisp-cooked and crumbled) 1 (14 oz) can artichoke hearts (drained and chopped) 1 cup grated parmesan cheese 3 T sour cream 2 eggs (beaten) ½ t cayenne pepper Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS: Cook the grits in the chicken broth and water in a large saucepan using the packaging directions. Add the butter and stir until melted. Add the bacon, artichoke hearts, and cheese and mix well. Combine the sour cream and eggs in a bowl and mix well. Add to the grits with the cayenne pepper and mix well. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon into a greased baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. * I added a bit of shredded asiago cheese and broiled for a few minutes to get a crusty cheesy top edge, because well, I’m still FROM New York City. Enjoy!

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF LITTLE ROCK The Junior League of Little Rock is exploring a few policy changes this year in an effort to become more member friendly, according to JLLR President Jennifer Goss.

CREATING POSITIVE CHANGES FOR MEMBERS

KEEPING MEMBERS ENGAGED

As a focus on members continues, concerted efforts have been made by all to ensure that members are at the forefront of our organization.

General Meetings have become more member-focused by planning around structured conversations and including more games and participation from attendees.

In addition, members can give feedback after every meeting and the data is used by the board to improve future agendas. Most recently they received feedback from members for new training topics and a desire for more training opportunities. So now at every meeting, as well as training event, there is an effort to bring in speakers who can help members grow both personally and professionally.

For JLLR, “members” means all— new, active, and sustaining. The board is working to re-engage and better communicate with sustainers. One way is to reach out to the sustainer stars, those who have indicated they would like to be involved. The 1922 Society has also been a successful way to keep sustainers involved.

There has also been a coordinated effort to communicate better within

the League this year. The format of the League Link has changed, a new members-only Facebook group has started, new nominating processes were established to communicate available leadership opportunities and leaders and the newly-named Member Services Committee (formerly known as Placement Committee) are dedicated to sharing information with councils and committees.

There’s been an effort to better advertise the pre-meeting happy hour and the post-meeting social destination. In addition to the fellowship experienced through community service, there are more social opportunities for members to connect through Committee on Membership Experience events like Book Club, Wine Club, and Leaguers who Lunch.

Keeping members engaged while also continuing to provide them with relevant leadership development and social opportunities is not easy, but it will be essential to keeping JLLR a strong and relevant organization.

LOOKING FORWARD AND PLANNING AHEAD Of course, moving forward always means change. From a development perspective, membership voted to sunset the Cookbook Committee by the centennial year, and voted last year to sunset Downtown Dash. The League has been diversifying its passive income through initiatives like AmazonSmile and Kroger Rewards. JLLR will continue to focus on policies and projects that align with members’ needs and that are not as much of a financial burden. From a membership perspective JLLR is now open to all, regardless of residency.

So, what’s next? We’re almost 100 years old! The centennial president will be announced in January. She will be busy ensuring a successful centennial year with events, dedications, and awareness of JLLR's footprint in the community over the last 100 years. Many members are also being nominated for chair elect positions that will hold prestige, especially for the centennial year. The Centennial Celebration Committee is led by co-chairs Kara Wilkins and Ellon Cockrill. This committee came out of the Centennial Task Force and Centennial Research Committee and has been many years in the making. The 99th year will be a silent phase with the committee preparing for the centennial year.

The Board is also working through the revision of the League’s strategic plan. A Strategic Planning Task Force was created, and in January, there will be a joint strategic meeting of both the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 boards. The strategic plan will focus on the greatest needs of the community and our membership through membership feedback and community participation.

Members of JLLR have a lot to look forward to in the coming months and years with an organization who continues to meet their needs while continuing to evaluate the needs of and how to best serve the city of Little Rock.

Junior League of Little Rock was the host city for the 2019 All-Arkansas Conference in August, where the state’s five Leagues sent 50 delegates to participate in an educational weekend full of networking, training, and tools to apply to the delegates’ respective Leagues.

The weekend started with events for League Presidents and Presidents Elect on the afternoon of Friday, August 2, where they enjoyed time with other League leaders by learning a new skill of preparing DIY home projects at Board and Brush Creative Studio and networking with each other during lunch at The Green Room.

For delegates, the event kicked off that night with a cocktail reception at the Capital Hotel. On Saturday, August 3, the training component of the conference commenced. From the energizing first session, a Recruitment Power Hour session, to closing the day with a Retention Power Hour, both led by Vicki Clark, delegates received valuable training that was applicable to their work in their Leagues. The day also included breakout sessions on “Sustainer Connection and Engagement” with JLLR sustainers and “Engaging in the Community” with Janell Mason, Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkansas, and Keynote Speaker Chanda Cashen Chacón, Chief Operating Officer of Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, who presented an impactful session on leadership.

Mary Fair, a Junior League of Little Rock delegate, said, “All-Arkansas was a great event where I enjoyed meeting successful women from all over the state. It was exciting to hear about the impact Leagues are having in their communities and to hear from inspiring Vicki Clark and Chanda [Cashen] Chacón. It was a great opportunity to grow personally and professionally.”

The conference rotates annually between the five Leagues in our state, and the next one will be held in Northwest Arkansas in August 2020.

Stuffing More than Just Buses Helping Kids Start School on the Right Path by

In August, when most of us were wrapping up our summer vacation, many parents of Little Rock School District (LRSD) students started to figure out how they could afford basic learning tools for their child to have on the first day of school.

This is where JLLR's Stuff the Bus (STB) comes in. Now in its 14th year, STB has outgrown the buses and now depends upon the help of LRSD truck drivers and local moving companies, like Brandon Moving and Storage, to transport supplies to 3,500 students in our seven partner schools. Arkansas Rice donated rulers for each of the students STB serves, and the committee also received a

generous donation of supplies from Access Health Services.

In July, STB committee members, JLLR board members, JLLR new members, and several community partners, including Ally Financial, USAble Life, and UA Little Rock Public Radio, delivered school supplies, so all students at our partner schools have an equal opportunity to start school on the right path!

Lawrence Jackson, a returning volunteer from USAble Life commented, “I come from a large family so buying school supplies wasn’t always easy for our family.

JLLR New and Active members, and several community partners, including Ally Financial, USAble Life, and UA Little Rock Public Radio, delivered school supplies, and volunteered for Stuff the Bus, which provides LRSD students with new school supplies.

Having access to the tools they need, such as pens, pencils, crayons, and paper, helps prepare students for academic studies, builds self-esteem, and ensures that our most at-risk kids have everything they need to start the school year off ready to learn.

My mom always made sure we had what we needed, but it would have been great to have a program like Stuff the Bus when I was a kid to help alleviate some of that pressure.

I specifically requested to volunteer at Meadowcliff because that’s where I went to elementary school, and there’s a huge need there. I wanted to volunteer again this year because I know first hand how having basic school supplies can help students succeed.”

The project doesn’t end when school starts, however. This year, the STB committee began a new tradition of collecting tissue and hand sanitizer at the September and October general meetings to donate during flu season and will continue to support our schools by replenishing their most needed supplies throughout the year.

Sustainer of the Year: Ellon Cockrill Ellon Cockrill is truly in a league of her own.

She first began her League career in 1978 after graduating with both a bachelor and masters degree in nutrition from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Her decision to join Junior League of Little Rock was as simple as someone asking her to join.

Ellon admittedly didn’t know much about JLLR, so she did some research and discovered that the League was heavily involved in serving the community through voluntarism. At that time, the new Arkansas Art Center was nearly finished, and JLLR was embarking on a new program now called Riverfest. Needless to say, Ellon was intrigued.

Since then, Ellon has served in various capacities as Area V Little Rock Conference Chair in 1984 and Council Elected Member in 1986. She also recently helped to establish the 1922 Society and led the committee as the founding chair in 2017. Ellon has served as a tireless community leader and advocate for children and families across Arkansas, having helped raise money for organizations such as Centers for Youth and Families and the National Museum for Women in the Arts. Because of her hard work, she has received numerous accolades, including the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas Woman of the Year in Philanthropy in 2018 and the Little Rock Rotary Club 99 Rotarian of the Year in 2019. Ellon’s family includes her husband, Rogers; their two children, Ashley and Rogers; and three grandchildren, Cornell, Georgia and Tillar.

What are you most passionate about, or what motivates you to give back to the community?

What are you looking forward to in the coming League year?

I’m probably most passionate about helping children, specifically those who have been diagnosed with a mental health illness. Our most vulnerable children are often the ones that need the most support, love and compassion.

Co-chairing the Centennial Celebration Committee and working towards the 100th anniversary is my focus, and there's a lot of work to bedone to celebrate an amazing milestone.

What's your favorite place to travel?

Aspen, Colorado because that's where my grandsons live!

Active Member of the Year: Stephanie Maxwell Newton Stephanie Maxwell Newton is someone you’ll always see around the League with a smile on her face and a can-do attitude. She has been an active League member for seven years now. Her favorite memory of service is helping kids pick out books to take home during Reading Days with Little Readers Rock.

“It was important to me not just to hand out free stuff but to inspire the students to enjoy reading, and it felt like we were achieving that,” said Stephanie.

As we reach a milestone of 100 years of service, Stephanie is looking forward to even more people having an awareness of the League’s role in the community. In her opinion, having such a rich history with Little Rock will help cement our place as a leading women’s organization not only in the city but also across the state. She would love to see school preparedness at the forefront of the League’s strategic plan.

Her dream is for our volunteer efforts to be a part of helping every student in the city read at grade level by the end of third grade.

New Member of the Year: Shelley Lewis Among her New Member class, Shelley Lewis is known to be hard working and efficient in her leadership roles. In the spirit of voluntarism, she is quick to step forward to help get the job done. Her love for the League is evident through these actions and in how much she enjoys bringing out the best in people around her. You may find Shelley at The Root or Big Orange, depending on the time of day, but this Little Rock foodie also loves the outdoors. When she isn’t cycling or rock climbing, you may find her scouting the dollar spot at Target.

Shelley enjoys all of these hobbies in addition to being a mom and a board member for Saint Joseph’s Helpers. She has found a balance for all of these undertakings by accepting each of these commitments with a clear idea of time requirements. Shelley feels the League’s leadership is very open about the time commitment and requirements behind each placement. Shelley’s passion for literacy paired with her knack for true leadership will benefit both her and the League in the years to come!

MEET THE BOARD Jennifer Goss President Born and raised in Little Rock, volunteering in the community has always been a priority for Jennifer.

She has served as Treasurer, Little Readers Rock Chair, Financial Planning Chair, and ANMT Committee Member. Her most memorable committee was Little Readers Rock, where committee members worked to improve the League’s impact on the community and distributed over 5,700 books during the 20172018 League year. In her nine years of service—from leadership training to serving children of Little Rock to working with women who teach her something new every day—the interpersonal and professional skills Jennifer has developed would not have been possible without JLLR.

The 2019 JLLR Leading Ladies Leigh Anne Kreps Treasurer As a young child, Leigh Anne’s parents set an example of how citizens can make an impact in their community. Now she is trying to be that example for her child. Leigh Anne loves to share JLLR's events and projects with loved ones. During the last three years, she has worked to make the financial roles more attractive and viewed as obtainable leadership positions for full time working women and mothers.

As Treasurer, she will continue to ensure that the JLLR financial process is transparent, to improve knowledge transfer, and to transform the JLLR work environment by encouraging financial transactions to be performed remotely.

Growing up, voluntarism was a pillar instilled in Jenna by her family and has continued to grow as a primary passion in her life. Jenna is always utilizing appreciation and cultivation techniques that she has learned at the League to help keep nonprofit volunteers engaged, passionate and pointed towards their mission. Jenna has primarily served on the Headquarters committee. She feels that maintaining the historic integrity of the JLLR building is an important piece of the League’s rich history and considers it an honor to be a part of such a legacy.

Encouraged by a colleague to join JLLR, Casey quickly found one of the greatest gifts of the League: the ability to broaden one's impact through the power of like-minded women. Since she joined, she has been able to see the lasting impact that the League has had in the community.

She is forever grateful for this organization and its commitment to hands-on experiences that cultivate community change while building leadership skills. Casey has served on a number of JLLR committees, including Nonprofit Board Institute, Training, and 1922 Society.

MEET THE BOARD Betsey Mowery Community Vice President Little Rock is Betsey's hometown, so being a part of JLLR is deeply meaningful to her. Many of the women she looked up to as a child were JLLR members. For the past 23 years, Betsey has completed Community, Ways & Means and InLeague placements, and has even served on some committees multiple times. Her favorite placements have been the ones that exercised muscles she didn’t know she had. This year, Betsey is the Community Vice President. She’s looking forward to supporting and encouraging the women who serve our community on behalf of the JLLR.

Tanya’s JLLR career began five years ago when her husband Terrance asked her, “When do you plan to join JLLR?” Since that time, she has served in several capacities in the League as Downtown Dash Volunteer Coordinator, Nonprofit Board Institute Training Coordinator, and 1922 Society Annual Fund Giving Chair. Tanya is overjoyed to serve the Little Rock community through JLLR. She looks forward to forging and developing relationships with all donors.

Marly first learned about JLLR from her mother, an active Sustainer. Over the past seven years, Marly has served in various placements—most of which are Membership-related. This past year will remain dear to her heart as she served as the Chair of Admissions and New Member Training. Her goal was to help new members better understand the organization with which they were spending their volunteer time and form forever friendships that would help new members continue to look forward to attending JLLR events throughout their League career.

Emily Powell Carpenter Marketing Vice President Emily loves being a member of the Junior League of Little Rock because she loves belonging to a community of strong women who are working to make Little Rock a better place. Her favorite parts of the League are the many opportunities to develop her leadership skills—through formal training events, during League placements, and even just from watching other members. This year Emily hopes to continue growing as a leader, developing those members who serve with her on Marketing Council, and effectively communicate everything that is great about JLLR, both internally and externally.

Kenya Eddings Nominating Director Kenya has loved JLLR and all of the experiences it has provided since the year she joined in 2002.

Why did she join? To give back to the community which has given so much to her. Among her most memorable placements are that of Interaction Editor, Placement Chair, Training Director, and G.R.O.W. Mentor. Why does she stay? Simply put, because of the role she helps play in making a difference in the lives of women and children. And because JLLR offers professional and personal training that has helped hone her servantleadership skills.

Lauren Hall Treasurer Elect Lauren moved to Little Rock in 2012 with her now husband, knowing very few people. She was looking for an outlet to serve while also meeting new friends. She was persuaded to join JLLR in 2013, and the rest is history. The League has surrounded her with other women who do it all—they work full time jobs and are committed to their family and children while still finding time to serve the community. She considers it a privilege to serve alongside these women and takes every opportunity to learn from them.

Shana describes herself as being addicted to volunteerism. Joining the League was an opportunity to both learn more about the city and to engage with a group of women who were civicminded and dedicated to serving their community.

Her service has allowed her to meet and work with women from all walks of life, to learn about the city and how women, like those in JLLR, have been influential to its history and to serve on projects, such as Stuff the Bus and Little Readers Rock, that will have such a powerful impact.

Cindy Pugh Sustainer Advisor to the Board Cindy loved every placement she had in the League.

She thinks it’s a pretty good idea to serve on a development project, a community project and on the administrative side. For Cindy, the Junior League Prayer of Service encapsulates most of what she feels she learned in the League. Every line resonates with her on how she feels about the League, service and a joyful life. Her goal for this year is to serve the board as needed. She looks forward to seeing how the League continues to evolve and remain relevant for today’s volunteers and the community.
