BECOME THE AUTHOR OF YOUR OWN POWERFUL STORY
Surrounded by stunning natural beauty, Juniata College is a place where inquisitive, talented, and hardworking students do the all-important work of becoming broadly educated, effective citizens of the world. They can write their own academic programs based on their interests, talents, and goals. They contribute to a close-knit community of people who support, celebrate, and enjoy one another. Highly focused scholars, Juniata students conduct research, engage in meaningful service, intern on or near campus and across the globe, compete as athletes, and collaborate as artists. All of this happens in a place on the planet like none other— a modern oasis seemingly reserved for the very purpose of fostering exploration and reflection.
Do you know what you want to do? Who you want to be? At Juniata, we firmly believe your college years are the time to contemplate these questions and explore your options while you enjoy the twists and turns of your journey. We will encourage you to consider new ideas and perspectives, to take risks, to push yourself out of your comfort zone. As a result, you will graduate in four years not only with a useful college degree, but also with self-reliance, intellectual dexterity, courage of heart, and a collaborative, compassionate spirit. You will be the author of your own powerful story. It’s time for your Chapter One. Juniata College. THINK ABOUT WHO YOU ARE.

PAUL KUHN Enterprise Cloud Architect, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center POE: Information Technology with a secondary emphasis in Management Innovations for Industry • IT Systems • Computer Science I and II • Professional Presentations • Web Design • Database Design and Architecture • Data Visualization
Men's Volleyball Team, four years, twice achieving All-American status • National Society of Leadership and Success • 3D printing company, founder
A national champion in volleyball, a successful career in the making. Paul wasn’t the first Juniata student to combine information technology and management to form his POE. Yet it made perfect sense for him, a standout volleyball player who cared as much about his academic program as he did his favorite sport. The fluid and holistic aspects of the Juniata experience—in and out of the classroom—suited Paul well. On the volleyball court, Paul excelled as a member of Juniata’s nationally ranked team, twice achieving All-American status. In his Innovations for Industry (I4I) course, Paul worked on academic projects and also started his own 3D printing business. “I can’t tell you how many hours I spent in the I4I workspace, but it was a lot.” Now an enterprise cloud architect after finishing a two-year leadership development program at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Paul reaps the benefits of both of his undergraduate passions. At UPMC, he completed six-month rotations in a variety of information services and management functions. “What makes me the most proud is the way I learned to balance the commitment of being a student-athlete with my work in the classroom. Both aspects of my college experience were incredibly demanding, and I am proud of the way I handled that challenge.”
CLAY COOPER Family Medicine Resident at Duke University Health System • MD/MBA Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Smeal College of Business
POE: Biology, Spanish and Hispanic Cultures Independent study in Medical Spanish and Cultural Differences in Healthcare among Latinx individuals • Analytical Chemistry • Social History of Medicine • Studied abroad in Ecuador and Orizaba, Mexico • Internships at Southeast Lancaster Health Services and Penn State College of Medicine
Contagious enthusiasm for humanity: Meet a doctor of tomorrow. Clay’s individualized POE proved the perfect starting place for a distinctive career in medicine. In collaboration with his Spanish adviser, Clay designed a transformative independent study in which he dove into the language that medical professionals in Spanish-speaking countries use to connect with patients. Clay’s caring attitude, combined with his career interests, enabled him to become the kind of humanitarian that today’s health professions need. While a Duke University Family Medicine resident in Durham, N.C., he took part in a highly selective World Health Organization UNICEF Global Conference on Primary Health Care in Kazakhstan—one of only 50 professionals accepted worldwide.
THALIA JEAN (TJ) FAITH CHANCE-CHIN Digital Media Manager, Chacka Marketing, Tampa, Fla. POE: Entrepreneurial Arts with a secondary emphasis in Communication Senior Seminar in Business • Entrepreneurship • Group Communication • Media Analysis Field Hockey • Track & Field • Digital Intern/Photographer for Sports Information Department • Juniata Associate Social Media Manager • Social Media Intern, Huntingdon County Visitors Bureau, serving one million visitors annually
A self-designed POE led TJ exactly where she wanted to go. “A life without risks is a life unlived, so take a leap of faith and soar.” These are the words to live by for Thalia (“TJ”), a Florida resident who chose Juniata sight unseen. She wanted a school where she could play field hockey while also concentrating on her academics. Check. She also wanted a place where she could “customize my major for the industry in which I wanted to work.” Double check. Combining her interests in business and graphic design, TJ wrote a POE called “Entrepreneurial Arts.” She worked as a Juniata Associate social media manager, overseeing the College’s first team of student social media reporters and implementing project management software that aided team communication. Impressed by her positive attitude and ambition, the Huntingdon County Visitors Bureau hired her as a social media intern. While there, she revolutionized their social media communication model. Today, TJ is a digital media manager at Tampa-based Chacka Marketing, where she works with businesses to advance their social media advertising programs. Custom POE leads to internships leads to fulfilling career. Triple check.
Your education. Your story.
Juniata students choose POEs of inquiry and can also design
A Juniata education is a process of self-discovery. You’re here to write the story of you, and we’ll guide you as you think through that story.
HEALTH & THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
Advance wellness in society through work in education, health care, human services, and research which helps us better understand and improve the human condition and our relationship to the earth. GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT
Collaborate with people around the world to develop peace and foster understanding of our collective past and possible future, and spur greater economic, social, and interpersonal development.
Our students aren’t asked to choose a major but rather to write, with guidance from two faculty advisers, their own academic plan called a Program of Emphasis, or POE. Each POE blends the strongest interests and talents of a student into a cohesive course of study that satisfies curiosities, deepens knowledge, and builds excitement for a rewarding career. Today’s Juniata students are preparing to enter a rapidly changing and highly competitive world in which they will inevitably be presented with complex problems to solve. The Juniata College curriculum has been designed with this in mind.
COMMUNITY & HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Build stronger communities in which people can pursue their interests, develop potential, share ideas, and create solutions.

Freedom to explore. As a student at Juniata, you’ll be learning a lot about yourself. You might arrive here sure of what it is you want to study but then discover new interests you didn’t know you had and end up choosing a surprising new path. Juniata encourages students to be open to new ideas and grants every student the right to change their minds as they learn more about who they are and how they want to live their life. There are no “undeclared” students at Juniata, but you’ll find plenty of “exploratory” students here, actively engaged in defining their POE, and in the process, taking amazing classes that will inform their thinking in interesting ways.
Exploring more angles expands your perspective and equips you for success. Seems logical, right? Classroom time is important—but it’s just the foundation at Juniata where we engage the wide world in your learning. Students like Soumya (right) are well prepared for what’s next because they’ve learned through internships. Research. Travel. Service projects. Opportunities to step in and be a leader. These forms of hands-on learning deepen one’s understanding and are essential to the entire academic experience. Coming at your education from different directions will prepare you to enter your profession with greater confidence—and strength.
Meet the people who can take you there.
While we encourage independent thinking from multiple points of view, you’re never on your own in your efforts. You’ll be surrounded by partners, including your two advisers, who point you toward perspective-building experiences. Mentors who share the wisdom of their own stories and skills. Colleagues who connect you to unexpected opportunities. You’ll see the world in bigger terms. And you’ll see your future with greater clarity.
Learning through service to others. From the moment your work here begins, one of the most important parts of your curriculum is engagement with the surrounding world. Your studies go beyond the classroom through engagement in the community. This requirement isn’t just about making the world a better place—it’s about making you better at engaging with the world by interacting with different people and cultures. When you see the world from other perspectives, you can approach unfamiliar situations with greater confidence. This interpersonal work will prepare you for the wide range of places and people you’ll encounter throughout your life.
“At Juniata, no matter what decision you make, people will guide you.”
SOUMYA POLAVARAPU M.D./Ph.D. graduate student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine POE: Biochemistry • Genomics Certificate • Art History • Studied abroad for one year at University of Glasgow • St. Andrew’s Society Mutch Scholar • Pentz Pre-Med Scholarship • Member, American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Genetics Society of America Research experience in biology, chemistry, and geology • Supported engagement for J.C. Blair Hospital/ Health System Force for Health initiative • Tennis
Wide-ranging experiences contribute in surprising ways to Pre-Med studies. A first-generation college student, Soumya, of Bridgewater, N.J., found it easy to combine two very different interests into one richly fulfilling college experience as she studied biochemistry and art history. One of her mentors, Dan Dries, assistant professor of chemistry, opened her eyes to the field of medical humanities, encouraging her to combine different interests across the full range of arts and sciences. Soumya aspires to a career in public health and is pursuing an M.D./Ph.D. in epidemiology and global medicine. She found numerous opportunities to prepare, from presenting her research at an international conference and two regional conferences, to interning with local hospital J.C. Blair Health System as part of a project to meet rural health challenges. Soumya also presented at the TEDx Conference at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, U.K. Even her time as a campus tour guide will come in handy, Soumya says. “I learned how to talk to people and be able to trust my public speaking skills in a spontaneous setting. Hopefully this will translate into a good bedside manner.”
WORKING ON CAMPUS Every college has work study. So do we. We also have the Juniata Associates (JA) program that places students into positions where management and leadership skills can develop. nsberger Xander Ma dent Stu Enrollment or Ambassad

Many times, Juniata graduates draw directly from their JA experience when interviewing for their first job out of college, like Harris Cauler who managed a team of 25 students in the College’s Technology Solutions Center and now leads a team at Geico in Washington, D.C.
Academic resources: All you need. All in one place.
QUEST is designed to bring together the tools you need to help you define your path and hone your skills. QUEST will connect you to academic coaches, career exploration and planning professionals, student accessibility services, peer tutoring, academic advisers, and student life professionals. QUEST also connects the dots among other resources on campus for you, from the Center for International Education to the Writing Center and Beeghly Library.
Amy Mathur ’96, assistant professor of English and chair of the English department (abovemiddle), and all Juniata faculty members serve as advisers to students as part of the College’s signature two-adviser system. Faculty serve as academic advisers, partnering with you as you explore interests and strengths related to academic and career goals. They offer advice, provide support, and ensure you complete the necessary requirements to fulfill your unique academic plan. Your second adviser is your mentor. As a faculty or staff member of the College, your advising mentor will help you through transitions, encourage you to build strong connections and self-advocacy skills, and identify co-curricular learning opportunities. Juniata’s two-adviser system is one of the reasons why the book, Colleges That Change Lives, includes this quote from a student: “It feels like the whole school is set up just to make sure we succeed.”
Kick start your first year with confidence. Landing on campus for the first time is exciting—but it doesn’t have to be intimidating. Juniata’s First-YearExperience courses ease your transition to college life and make the expectations clear. The focus is on boosting your communication skills and priming you for the work of semesters to come. We mix things up with seminars co-taught by different faculty to stretch your perspective, get you thinking in new directions, and cultivate the habit of reflecting more deeply on your studies.
RYAN BOLOGA Social Studies Teacher, Assistant Football Coach, Assistant Baseball Coach, York Suburban Senior High School, Instructional Media Graduate Program, Wilkes University POE: Social Studies and Secondary Education United States Since 1945 • Adaptations for Students with Exceptionalities • Student Teaching at Mount Union High School Football Captain and Landmark Conference Player of the Week • Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Research Opportunity, Sparks Farm Research • History Department Panelist • Big Brothers Big Sisters Volunteer
“My history professors turned me into a better student and helped me approach academic scenarios from angles I’d never previously thought about … and the coaches helped me reach beyond my potential. I had many partners here.”
A middle linebacker for the Juniata football team, Ryan was a standout even in his first year, when he played every game. He became a starter his sophomore year and was team captain as a senior, finishing his Juniata football career with 209 tackles, three defensive touchdowns, and recognition as conference player of the week. An eclectic scholar-athlete, Ryan was a history honors society member and Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteer. In true Juniata interdisciplinary style, Ryan parlayed his love of history into an environmental, social, and cultural history study of Sparks Farm, a research opportunity that was funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Ryan often spoke with high school students about how sports and academics dovetail: “I talked a lot about managing your time when nobody is standing over your shoulder telling you what to do. Playing a sport forces you to be more disciplined. I always felt that football helped me perform better on and off the field.”
MUCH MORE THAN A FARM Sparks Farm is an off-campus experiential education and research center. Its 400 acres hold thousands of years of human history, evident in its abundant artifacts. It’s a destination for Juniata students studying archaeology, astronomy, biology, environmental science, and history, thanks to its biodiverse landscape of waterways, wildlife, and exquisitely dark night skies.

“My dad always told my brothers and me that you have to find your passion first and then find out how to make it pay. That way, your job will never feel like a job. I took his advice to heart, and it really got me started on the path that I’m on now.”
Startup star finds a world of support in mentors. Joey, a native of Easton, Pa., already had big plans underway before he graduated. With the heart and mind of an entrepreneur, he launched a startup company, AssureTech, through the Juniata Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, while still completing his degree. He’s since taken a full-time job in global marketing at a software firm, Kdan, in Taiwan, but continues to run AssureTech as well. How’d he go so far, so fast? He was surrounded by mentors at Juniata who helped him prepare his pitch for a business competition, learn the ropes of marketing, and pull the resources together to start a new enterprise from the ground up. Among those mentors was Wei-Chung Wang, associate professor of business and economics and director of global program development, who is the vice president of global marketing at Kdan. Joey is helping Wei-Chung set up Kdan’s U.S. operations.
YOUR FUTURE COMES TO CAMPUS—IN A BIG WAY. To help you find the right opportunity after graduation, Juniata hosts the largest independent college career fair in Pennsylvania, featuring more than 120 employers—including Fortune 500 companies. Many return year after year seeking out Juniata graduates. Our alumni attend the career fair in large numbers, representing their employers or their own businesses. They know—better than anyone—the quality of a Juniata education, and they eagerly welcome new alumni into their networks, making successful connections that guide new graduates through their post-collegiate life.

The world awaits. Let the journey begin.
Sure, students love campus life here, but one of the most exciting aspects of coming to Juniata is the many opportunities we offer for studying abroad. We make sure every student has this opportunity: financial aid travels with the student, and we work Nearly of with students to identify scholarships—for both Juniata students academic merit and financial need—to offset the study abroad additional costs. Some students study at a university, taking courses that meet their Juniata graduation requirements. Others choose to pursue a dual-degree program, earning a bachelor’s degree from Juniata and an equivalent undergraduate or master’s degree from a partner institution. Still others seek to gain professional experience at one of our internship sites in the U.K., France, and Spain—or take a servicelearning trip to do research and work with doctors, farmers, and others around the world.

The Juniata College Concert Choir is beloved by all who become part of it. Described as a blend of high expectations and intense focus, the choir experience also has ample room for fun and creativity. “Crying and laughing so hard with people until your cheeks hurt,” is how one choir member recently described the experience. Choir members perform across the country and around the world, spreading the connective power of music with every note sung.
College Concert Choir
No two people are alike in choir, and therein lies its powerful effect. As David Meadows ’98, Juniata’s director of alumni relations, has said, “There are so many different people who love Juniata choir, yet all have had a similar experience—of being accepted and empowered to be who they are.”
A WELCOMING CAMPUS FOR ALL. Juniata is an inclusive community in which the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) plays a vital role. EDI empowers students and graduates to pursue knowledge, act ethically, and engage with the world through interdisciplinary and intercultural lenses. We host a Diversity and Democracy Speaker Series and student events including Multicultural Storyfest, Black Excellence Dinner, Latinx Dinner, and more. Shared by EDI and Campus Ministry, the Unity House provides a welcoming meeting and gathering space for student organizations as well as interfaith prayer and meditation. Many clubs find their home at the Unity House like Plexus, Gente de la Cultura LatinX, Umoja, PRISM, and cultural organizations such as Burmese, French, Spanish, Chinese, German, Japanese, Russian, Korean, and Vietnamese clubs.
The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion hosts events as part of the Inclusive Excellence Series to celebrate first-generation students.
People here are intense and fun-loving. Open-minded and opinionated. Talented, intelligent, driven, and thoughtful. Because of Juniata, the story you write—the story of your life—will feature interesting characters from every corner of campus and beyond with whom you will form powerful and lifelong bonds of friendship and respect. Like those who came before, you will work—and play—in this wonderful community of good will and joy.

Traditions The Juniata culture is traditionally nontraditional. You will find an endless flow of things to do here—planned and spontaneous—all beloved and many of which have been part of our history since our founding in 1876. It’s a nice juxtaposition: together with our alumni, you’ll be part of a storied legacy, but you’ll also get to be a pioneer— creating new activities, breaking new ground, and adding your personal touch to longstanding traditions. Your ideas will find a home here. As will you.
Lobsterfest, a massive outdoor meal on the Quad, is a time when more than 100 clubs, ensembles, academic honor societies, cultural organizations, club sports teams, community service, and other campus groups share information and recruit students.
In the fall, a day is set aside for Mountain Day. No one knows in advance when it will happen, but classes are canceled, and the entire community is awakened to the sounds of air horns and bused to nearby Raystown Lake for an all-day picnic, a faculty-versus-students tug-of-war, and other fun activities.
Storming of the Arch happens every fall when first-year students attempt to charge through the iconic arch of the oldest residence hall on campus. Waiting to prevent said “storming” are Juniata rugby players. Ask alumni about it. They’ll tell you stories of near victory and of bonding with fellow students from all classes.
Madrigal Dinner is one of our most popular traditions. On the last Saturday of fall semester, this event starts with an elaborate meal served to students by faculty and staff. After dinner, members of the campus community entertain guests, then the entire group participates in holiday caroling. The grand finale is “The Twelve Days of Christmas” sung by different sections of the dining hall who act out each part of the song.
About a month before Madrigal dinner, students who choose to participate set up tents and brave the chilly autumn nights for a week. During Tenting, students compete in games, talent shows, and other challenges to earn points. As teams earn more points, they move to the front of the line to order Madrigal tickets, giving them a better chance to get a table in the coveted “five golden rings” section.
The Bailey Oratorical Contest is a longstanding academic tradition. This speech competition is for students interested in communication and public speaking. Each year, a predetermined question like “Central to social change is the courage to act. What can we do to transform the way we live, learn, and work to make our communities more just?” serves as a prompt. Students write and deliver their answers in front of a panel of judges, an audience of fellow students, and to the hundreds of people watching a livestream of the event.
As the weather warms in the spring, several annual events bring students together for an entire day to celebrate each other. During the Liberal Arts Symposium, classes are canceled so that students can present research projects, give performances, exhibit works of art, and enjoy a picnic on the Quad while listening to the Jazz Ensemble. This all fosters new conversations that complement the intellectual dialogue of the campus.
LIVING ON CAMPUS During your years here, you and your fellow students will add your own signature energy to campus life and sustain its vibrant culture. Residential life places first-year students together so you can build your transitional skills— adjusting to living away from home, balancing freedom with responsibility—with those in the same situation as you. Housing is guaranteed for four years, and over 90 percent of students live on campus. We offer different types of housing from traditional to suite-style and apartment-style, as well as interest-based living options. Global Village, for example, offers immersion, cultural, and language-building opportunities in Spanish, Chinese, German, or French. There’s a general intercultural floor, an eco-house, an all-female, and a gender-inclusive option as well.
Focus your intensity. Have fun. Health and wellness. Academic achievement. Full participation in the Juniata experience. These are priorities of the Juniata athletics program—where Eagles soar! As a Juniata scholar-athlete, you will engage your brain and your heart—as well as your strength, agility, and athletic prowess—as you continue to write the story of you. At Juniata, the mission of intercollegiate athletics is linked inextricably to the educational mission of the College. Coaches prepare team members for high-level play while also serving as their partners—sharing life lessons, checking in on academics, helping students overcome challenges, encouraging study and diligence, and enjoying team camaraderie.

Meet Earth’s next great cheerleader. A Frederick, Md., native, Stephanie applied to 10 colleges of all sizes, knowing she wanted to study environmental science. On one of her visits to Juniata, things clicked when she heard current students recounting their experience studying in the Galapagos Islands—an important destination for environmental scientists to conduct research. But it wasn’t just the environmental science program that drew Stephanie here. A cheerleader in high school, she was elated to learn that she could continue cheering in college. And then there’s Stephanie’s personal battle with chronic illness: she wanted to land at a campus where there was a solid support system in place to help when she needed it. She found that here. Since enrolling at Juniata, Stephanie has seized numerous opportunities to pursue her profession, applying her newly gained skills for the greater good, including a vegetation survey alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers while living at Juniata’s Raystown Lake Environmental Field Station.
“ During one of my visits, I remember hearing about a student studying abroad in the Galapagos Islands. Ever since, I knew that was what I wanted to do. Juniata made that possible.”
