On Saturday evening, October 20, 2018, at a gala celebration concluding the fall meeting of its board of trustees, Juniata College kicked off BELIEVE: The Campaign for Juniata College. With a goal of raising more than $115 million, this comprehensive campaign hopes to generate the largest philanthropic investment in the student experience in Juniata’s history.

At the Campaign Kick-Off, Troha announced that the campaign’s quiet-phase efforts had already raised $80 million in gifts to the College which support the three key aims of the campaign: supporting faculty, providing access for students to pursue their education, and enhancing learning spaces on campus. Among the gifts announced were a $1 million gift to endow a scholarship, from Carol (Heaton) ’66 and Wayne Pletcher; a $1.5 million gift composed of cash and an estate intention to support student research, from Keith ’75 and Elaine (Becker) ’76 Jones; a $2 million lead gift to support a new music facility, from Barry ’65 and Marlene (Robinette) ’62 Halbritter; a $3 million lead gift to support the renovation and redesign of Beeghly Library, from Tim ’72 and Kathy (Stavru) ’72 Statton; and a $1 million gift to establish the George ’75 and Cynthia (Hill) ’76 Valko Endowed Professorship of Biological Sciences, about which it also was announced the initial holder of that professorship would be Regina Lamendella, associate professor of biology.

The BELIEVE campaign began quietly on June 1, 2014, with an initial goal of raising $100 million. Due to the strong reaction from individuals and the wide participation of alumni, friends, faculty, and parents supporting the effort and the accumulation of gifts prior to its October 2018 meeting, Juniata’s board of trustees voted to raise the goal for the campaign to $115 million.

Juniata has prepared future educators for @juniataprztroha decades, of course. I would argue that everyone in this issue is an educator in some way.

Juniatians make a tremendous effort to engage with the world and with their communities. They do so globally, like Ray Day, or in classrooms, like the teachers spotlighted here. They also delve into our past to help us understand where we are, as the geologists we feature are doing at Fort Roberdeau.

Whether it’s our new and very successful mock trial team or our recognition of a beloved coach whose past connections have helped build us, our community is about learning together. Each issue of this magazine is a testimony to the teaching we all do and to the learning we all make possible. It is at the core of what we do.

Placed at the corner of Knox Stadium, at the intersection of campus and community, an Eagle poised for flight serves as a fitting tribute to a man who worked hard to help his players soar on and off the field. The new memorial was dedicated on September 29, 2018 to honor the late Steve Hayes, a dedicated local football coach who passed away December 29, 2016.

Hayes served as an assistant football coach at many schools, and he dedicated more than 25 years of his career to Juniata College.

“He was one of our coaches and one of the members of our family here,” said President James A. Troha at the memorial’s dedication. “As you think about it, being at an intersection here, it is reflective of what he meant in our community.”

The memorial came about through the hard work and dedication of Steve’s friend, Vince Inzerillo of Lewistown, who coached with Steve at Juniata. Vince’s desire was to make a tribute to his dear friend at a place that they both loved so much.

“He lived for football and loved it,” Vince says. “He made his players better people as well as better players. That’s the goal. You want to win football games, you want to play well, but you are teaching them about life and making them better people. He certainly did that. That was his coaching philosophy. Now, his former players are pillars of their communities.

Winning is important but making them better people is more important.”

Inzerillo worked with local artisan Tim Klock to design a chainsaw carving of the eagle, which sits atop a pillar, surrounded by a small garden and seating area overlooking the stadium.

Hayes’s wife, Debra; son, Jeff; daughter-in-law, Chrissy; and granddaughter, Emma, took part in the dedication ceremony and were presented with a special Eagles helmet with an “SH” insignia on the back.

The spot is one Troha anticipates will be photographed and visited often by generations of students to come.

“I think it’s spectacular,” Troha says.

“You can see it from a lot of different angles from our campus. It’s a great testament to Steve. I appreciate Vince’s vision and generosity in making this happen.”

Honoring a Coach’s Legacy: New Memorial Dedicated on Campus

On the Case: New Mock Trial Team Competes Like Old Pros Out of nowhere, a powerful and enraged chimpanzee named Elias lunged at an unsuspecting late-night show audience, killing Chris Villafana, one of the show’s writers.

When the shock of the incident wore off, the inevitable question arose: who was to blame? Was it Danny Kosack—Elias’ handler—or Midlands Television Studios? The studio sued Kosack for negligence and, to complicate matters, Kosack filed a countersuit. When the incident went to court, Juniata’s newly formed mock trial team took the case.

Formed at the beginning of the fall 2018 semester, the College’s mock trial team first competed at the Guardian Invitational in New London, Connecticut, before tackling the case of the aforementioned prodigal primate at the Friar Face Off, which was held in Olean, N.Y., on November 3 and 4, 2018. The team earned their first victory at the Face Off, which was only their second official competition, when they defeated Allegheny College, St. Bonaventure University, Syracuse University, and the University of Buffalo.

In mock trial competitions, Juniata’s team defends and prosecutes both sides of a case in front of real judges, practicing attorneys, and other law professionals who score their presentations. As in a real trial, case information is released before the competition begins so the teams can prepare their witnesses, craft opening statements, and establish useful legal precedents.

“You need to know your case material so you can capitalize on any opportunities that come up,” says Charlie Jones ’19, one of the team’s attorneys. “And in this recent case, very little was clear cut, so it really came down to how well you presented your position.”

But neither the generous gift from Moyer and Bowman nor Andrews’ steady hand are the only reasons for the success of Juniata’s new program.

Attorney David P. Andrews ’74 coaches the team. Andrews has coached mock trial teams at the high school and college level, leading Altoona Area High School’s team to a state championship in 2014 and a top-20 finish at the national competition.

“Apart from sharpening communication and critical thinking skills, mock trial is one of the best ways to prepare undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in law,” says Andrews, who coaches both of Juniata’s mock trial teams and teaches two academic courses related to mock trial each semester.

When a student at Juniata, Andrews was active in a similar organization, the Barrister’s Club, among whose members was his lifelong friend, Bruce Moyer ’74. Moyer became an attorney and a lobbyist in Washington D.C. In 2018, Moyer and his wife, JoAnn Bowman ’75, a human resources and international development expert, provided a gift to Juniata to help fund the start of the College’s mock trial team.

expert witnesses. “The whole team cares about doing well and is willing to put in the long hours to get there.”

The team’s strong, collective work ethic is complemented by individual talent as well. Team captain Haley Walker ’19 earned the Outstanding Attorney Award at the Face Off, while Olivia Drake ’20 earned the Outstanding Witness Award for the defense and Vidal Glassman ’21 won the Outstanding Witness Award for the plaintiff.

For the members of Juniata’s newfound program, team victories, individual awards, and valuable experiences are likely to become the new norm, no matter how abnormal the case.

From Surviving to Thriving: Juniata Student Guides the Healing Process “I go through the healing process by seeing these women, who are smiling and are full of love and empathy, even though they have gone through the most horrible experiences.”

Liliane Pari Umuhoza ’19 does a lot of behind-the-scenes work to make retreats possible for genocide victims, but her work doesn’t end there. She speaks to the group, participates in the retreat herself, and interacts with other participants in order to not only help heal them, but herself, too.

Though leading the retreat and completing participants’ follow-ups throughout the year from a different country can be tedious, Umuhoza knows that the work is worth it in the end because she sees the value in women healing each other.

“I am a survivor as well,” Umuhoza says. “I go through the healing process by seeing these women, who are smiling and are full of love and empathy, even though they have gone through the most horrible experiences.”

The second retreat resulted in some joint successes for Umuhoza and other participants.

“We had a woman who is HIV positive because of rape, and she refused to take her medicine, which means that she was taking away her own life,” Umuhoza says. “Taking medicine for these women is not just taking medicine—it is a reminder every day about what they went through.

After this retreat, she started taking her medicine. We saved a life.”

In addition, the retreat allows women, some of whom have kept quiet about their traumas and experiences for almost 25 years, to finally open up to others, which Umuhoza says “is a huge relief and a huge step toward recovery.”

The success of the retreats has brought up a challenge, however. Umuhoza has yet to find an organization to fund the program for the survivors, so she works throughout the year, while continuing as a full-time student, to attempt to secure funding for the retreat to make it an annual event.

“We have had around 70 women go through the program thus far,” Umuhoza says. “But, there are so many women who need this support, and there’s no way I’m going to stop doing this any time soon.”

When she began her internship with the Genocide Survivors Foundation, Liliane Pari Umuhoza, a senior at Juniata and survivor of the Rwandan Genocide against the Tutsi, asked herself one question: “How can I empower others in the most effective way?”

Umuhoza knew she didn’t only want to contribute money because, in her opinion, that isn’t the most sustainable kind of service. So, she came up with the idea of creating a multi-day retreat for other survivors, filled with group activities, music, self-care, healing, and resilience trainings. At the retreat, Umuhoza even teaches attendees about starting businesses and making steady incomes.

In August 2018, Umuhoza facilitated the second annual retreat for the genocide survivors, building off the success of her initial internship with the Survivors Foundation, which she pursued with funding from Juniata’s Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.

“Healing is personal, but it can sometimes be collective, too,” Umuhoza says. “So, the retreat is for people to come together and learn from each other. Bringing them together helps them know that they are not alone.”

To plan the retreat, Umuhoza recruits psychologists, speakers, and other professionals to guide women through the healing process. And, she plans and participates in the activities with the women—consulting participants about retreat activities before planning the event.

The Juniata women’s volleyball team had an incredible season that included a 26-game winning streak from mid-September to November 16 that saw them win 81 percent of their matches in straight sets. The Eagles earned the program’s 38th straight Landmark Conference championship, and competed in the NCAA Division III tournament, earning a spot at the Final Four, where they fell to Emory, who continued on to win the National Championship.

Those Who Can Decades of Alumni Educate About the Power of Teaching Well

Generations of Juniata alumni have pursued careers in education because of inspirational teachers.

And yet, negative stereotypes of teachers abound from the droning noises of the teacher in Charlie Brown cartoons and The Breakfast Club’s assistant principal Vernon— who locks a student in a closet— to Breaking Bad’s drug-dealing Walter White and the abusive Elizabeth Halsey from the aptly titled film Bad Teacher.

While at Juniata, Christopher started a fly-fishing club, which gave him leadership skills that he says have served him in his career and life.

“When I got this job, I can’t tell you how many emails I got with pictures of that superintendent from The Simpsons,” recalls David Christopher ’96, assistant superintendent of the North Allegheny School District.

But, when you ask an aspiring teacher what they envision for themselves, negative caricatures fall short. They dream about being Matilda’s Miss Honey or Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society—an educator who sweetly and staunchly supports their students not only through school but through life. Future educators want to be intelligent, practiced, and caring role

models who are encouraging and shaping the future—the types of educators that Juniata creates.

Programs of Emphasis (POEs) in education as a whole are among the most popular. In the past five years, more than 130 graduates have had a POE that included education, and 10 percent of incoming students cited an interest in education in 2017.

“The bottom line is, the way Juniata College does education just works,” says Dan Savino ’00, a high school physics teacher in Maryland.

“What makes our department so

unique is that it has prepared teachers to work with students in a manner that supports the specific needs of all children,” adds Sarah Jane DeHaas, Martin G. Brumbaugh Professor of Education. “Our students are in practicum throughout their four years, and they receive a lot of guidance and feedback from our faculty.”

Juniata graduates teachers who have the classroom experience, respect for students, and well-rounded knowledge to ensure that their students succeed—in the classroom and beyond. So, what about an education in education does Juniata get so right?

A signature aspect of Juniata’s education program is the extensive classroom exposure that students get, starting as early as their first semester. Christopher estimates that he has had the opportunity to interview more than 1,000 prospective teachers, and he says the key to being successful in a classroom is “practicum experience, done early on.” Whereas Christopher

remembers his enthusiasm for teaching being affirmed in his first year at Juniata, he finds that graduates from other colleges are seniors before realizing for the first time what it’s like to work in a classroom.

“My experiences at Juniata gave me even more experience than it looks like on paper,” says Jason Robinson ’08, who teaches at the University of Northern Colorado. Robinson, who switched from elementary to secondary education because of his practicum experiences, attributes his K-12 field work at Juniata—where education students take on several classroom placements and connect with various types of students— with his success.

Marion (Kercher) Oliver ’64 enjoyed an award-winning career teaching middle- and high-school English. She says that Juniata’s ability to “prepare highly qualified teachers who are confident in facing challenges, sensitive to diverse learners, and skilled in using research-based practices stands the test of time.”

Experience is also a secret to the success of Marion (Kercher) Oliver ’64, a retired middle school English teacher.

“I was in student government and chaired women’s government,” says Oliver of her Juniata campus experience. “These experiences enabled me to have confidence, make decisions, and be willing to express informed opinions.”

During her 25 years teaching preschool, elementary, and middle school, Oliver completed a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Kean University and was one of the first teachers in her school district to receive the New Jersey Governor’s Outstanding Teacher Award.

Oliver says that her experiences at Juniata taught her about people.

“The most significant part of my education was the modeling that my Juniata professors presented to me,” Oliver says. “On top of learning science and math and reading, it was all the professors being such people of character that showed me what was important.”

Over the course of her career, Oliver noticed a difference between teachers from Juniata and those from other colleges and universities.

“I would see some of my colleagues who wouldn’t demand respect for each child, and that was sad to me,” Oliver recalls. “Juniata made me feel more

responsible. Having equal respect for every single person is important, and I give credit to Juniata for showing me that respect for every individual is essential.”

Even now, as she goes out shopping or to eat at restaurants, Oliver regularly finds former students approaching to give thank yous or share fond memories.

Oliver made sure that the openmindedness she learned from her overall Juniata experience was something that her students, even at their young ages, were exposed to as well. “I felt it was my responsibility to help my students to think.

that he needs to teach a course which asks its students, and therefore its teacher, to incorporate a little bit of everything.

“At Juniata, I had to take courses in religion, art, and literature—courses outside of my physics studies,” Savino says.

“Now, when my students and I are in the field at a local state park doing research, I recognize if the content we’re doing lends itself to a quote from Henry David Thoreau. Here, even though I am the physics teacher, the prompt my students

will get for their journal today will be a quote from Thoreau.”

The wide range of classes Robinson took at Juniata have allowed him to become a jack-of-all-trades in the world of education, which enabled him to personalize the education of many of his students. His classrooms at the primary and secondary education levels were filled with non-traditional learners, “students with individualized education plans due to behavior, and segregated students that were taught on a case-by-case basis. I would have all different needs—one for science, a few for math, maybe a few for social studies—each day.” So, Robinson set out to prove his well-roundedness, and passed his certification tests in elementary and special education, social studies, science, math, and English. And then a principal’s certification, just in case. Now, he has his doctoral degree and teaches an undergraduate course in Behavior Management and Applied Behavior Analysis at the graduate level.

“I never would have passed all of those tests without the requirements at Juniata,” Robinson says. “When I began teaching, I soon found that I could help my students with anything they were struggling with.”

Jason Robinson ’08 points out that many people think they are experts at teaching, because they’ve attended school.

But, there’s much more to education than knowing information and telling it to students. Instead, like many Juniata graduates, he focuses his energy on empowering his students to develop a passion for learning, which they can foster throughout their lives.

Between classes designed to stimulate a thirst for knowledge and broaden minds in every direction,

extensive time spent in classrooms gaining practical experience, and an open and inviting cast of faculty members who truly care about their students’ places in the world, the future educators who pass through Juniata’s classrooms are being given every advantage they could hope to enjoy. Generations of the College’s education alumni attest that, no matter the perceptions of pop culture, Juniata educators know why and how they teach.

“Teaching is not for the faint of heart,” Savino concludes. “Some teachers think they just need to impress the kids with their own intelligence. Instead, they should be working to help the kids see what they, the students, can do. Get the Lead Out at Fort Roberdeau

students enrolled in Mathur’s Geophysics course. “OK, we’re going to set up here,” Mathur instructs the group. “Let’s get the resistivity test set up.”

The group is in this cornfield to determine if they could find any historical or physical evidence of a lead-mining site near Fort Roberdeau. A rebuilt fort marking the site of a colonial fort that existed roughly from 1750 until shortly after the Revolutionary War, Fort Roberdeau’s mission was to protect settlers and an extensive lead mining operation that provided the raw ore to make lead ammunition for the war effort.

However, the path into that cornfield

started much earlier at an academic conference. At a meeting of the Nittany Mineralogical Society, Mathur heard a presentation by George Pedlow, a retired geology consultant from State College, Pennsylvania, that detailed a mystery— where exactly were these Sinking Valley lead mines located?

Mathur heard the talk and decided to invite Pedlow to his classroom to speak. That talk led directly to the jumble of students, journalists, and geologists spending a Saturday in a chilly central Pennsylvania field.

The troupe tramps through old corn cobs, snapped plant stalks, and the occasional animal dropping for a significant amount of time before stopping.

Members of the group look at their feet. There’s no plant life, no corncobs. Just rocks and soil stretching about 20 yards in an irregular oval—about the same amount of space taken up by a swimming pool.

beginning of their career on a one-off research opportunity that no one has done before,” Pedlow says.

To make the field trip happen, Mathur gathered Pedlow, Fort Roberdeau historian Karen Morrow, and Jim Stuby ’94, a project geophysicist with Earth Resources Technology in Laurel, Maryland, to see if the class could use advanced instrumentation to locate evidence of a mine.

Stuby, who had visited Juniata classes before with geophysics instruments, brought a resistivity meter, and a ground-penetrating radar instrument that looked like an oversized lawn mower with a small TV attached to the push bar.

“I like coming down to teach students how to use the

equipment,” Stuby says. “If you’re going into geophysics, you have to get experience using the equipment—that’s what it’s all about.”

Back in the Fort Roberdeau farm field, which the fort owns but is planted by a local farmer, the students fan out in a straight line, hammering in electrodes every three meters to a length of about 100 meters in each direction from the resistivity meter, which is plopped right in the middle of the cornfield’s barren area.

Each electrode, which looks like a two-foot-long spike, is hammered into the ground and hooked up to wires. Electricity is sent into the ground and then measured.

Different materials under the surface produce unique resistivity measurements.

a variety of historical maps, magazine articles, and even a letter to the editor that referred to locations of lead mines in the valley,” Pedlow says. “The problem was that in this 200year period, no one wrote down anything definitive about this mining operation.”

Pedlow had led a Harrisburg Geological Society field trip to the valley, where he and Duff Gold, professor emeritus of geology at Penn State University, were able to pick up lead ore on several sites near the fort. Gold passed the samples to Mathur to do some tests to determine the age of the lead deposits. Looking for a project to give his students field experience, Mathur asked Pedlow to talk to the class and help lead a class trip.

For instance, solid rock has very high resistivity, while disturbed or jumbled earth would have a low resistivity measurement.

“The resistivity test goes down to about 30 meters in depth,” Mathur explains. “Geologists do similar tests when they are looking for metals.”

The field experience available to the students gives those who want to pursue a geology career a leg up on the competition.

“I had no idea what I wanted to do coming into Juniata,” says Ben Gemballa ’18, of Apollo, Pa. “I took Geophysics and I loved it. There are many opportunities developing in the field. Out here now we’re doing stuff that only grad students would do.”

Gemballa says geophysicists are involved in all aspects of geology, mining, oil exploration, environmental remediation, and a host of other opportunities.

The group took about three to four hours to lay out the first set of electrodes.

Once the resistivity meter was giving out readings, the students laid out three more lines parallel to the original setup. The parallel layout would give the students a wider range of imagery along the same plane. If they were lucky, the test could

presented the Fort Roberdeau project at the Field Conference of Pennsylvania Geologists in State College. In addition, one of the conference field trips visited the sites at the historic fort. “The ultimate goal can be getting to the point where we can identify all the original Revolutionary War sites,” Pedlow says.

“It’s pretty amazing we found a possible mine site on the first try,” Mathur says. “In science that almost never happens.

It will be fun expanding on the study in the coming years and adding a bit more to the picture of Fort Roberdeau’s past.”

reveal an anomaly under the ground that might indicate past mining activity.

The tests revealed a 12-meter-deep “divot” in the subsurface, as if a giant golf club had taken a scoop of earth out during a swing.

“We took out the ground-penetrating radar and went over the surface,” Mathur explained. “The GPR can reveal the subsurface to a depth of about five to 6 meters.”

The image on the radar proved illuminating as the screen showed vertical wavy lines in the scooped-out area. “That means the ground was disturbed here,” Mathur says. “It’s a jumble of gravel that has been in-filled by sediment.”

According to Mathur and Pedlow, the students’ discovery of the divot indicates that there was a Revolutionary War-era mine on that site. “We can use this data to continue looking at likely sites in the Fort Roberdeau area.”

For Tara Fowler ’19, of Hellam, Pa., the field experience provided an effective addition to her skills. “It was great to collaborate and make our contribution to the scientific community and world knowledge.”

or the first two decades of his life, Raymond E. Day ’66 called the town of

Huntingdon, and the immediate environs of the Juniata College campus, his home. The young man who worked as a journalist for The Daily News in Huntingdon and in the local A&P grocery right after high school never thought he would one day set foot in more than 100 countries in the world. And incomprehensible was the idea that he would one day make a gift to help others attend Juniata.

Today, Day can see his life’s work in communities around the United States.

His 40-year career with the YMCA began at the height of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Day helped with national refugee resettlement efforts, working with the high commissioner for refugees at the United Nations to settle Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Laotian refugees.

“I visit Texas and still see the Vietnamese who settled there as fishermen and are a productive part of the community,” Day says. “The Hmong in Minneapolis are part of their communities.

I’m proud of that. These were people sitting in camps for years. They’ve become so productive and they are great citizens. I think that’s what America is all about.”

of Juniata’s Sill Business Incubator. The Day family lived on Warm Springs Avenue near J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. Day’s father tended the gardens and chauffeured President Calvert Ellis ’23, and his mother was the housekeeper for the Ellis family.

Day’s grandmother nannied the Ellis children, including future professor Betty Ann Cherry. Sometimes Day would help his father in the gardens at the Ellis home.

As he grew older, Day realized he wanted to do something more with his life. Having been around Juniata and taken a class there while in high school, it made sense to enroll at the College. But he needed to have studied a language.

“I went back to high school for Spanish,” Day says, “I used my lunch hour at A&P to go take Spanish at the high school. I got an A.”

It was a first taste of the success—and the exposure to other cultures—that was ahead of him.

“‘Great Epochs’ opened my thinking to the whole world,” Day recalls. “Later in life I was able to explore the world, and Juniata opened my mind to that. Growing up I didn’t think much about things outside of Huntingdon. You get concentrated and you don’t realize what kinds of opportunities are outside.”

In college, Day caught a presentation made by Peace Corps recruiters visiting Juniata. The presentation kindled his interest in seeing the world. He volunteered, went through the months of training necessary, and embarked on the greatest experience of his life.

or many readers, the name Ray Day may ring a bell— and not just for members of the Class of 1966. In the last decade alone, more than 60 students have received Ray Day Scholarships from an endowed scholarship to help them afford to attend Juniata.

More than 200 other students from underrepresented groups received other scholarships named to honor his legacy.

In an address to the Juniata campus in March 1967, Day urged then-President John Stauffer to organize experiences whereby Juniata students could work and learn in what the social worker termed “ghettos,” to understand the humanity of people living in their neighborhoods and to help others understand and advocate for change. Day’s commitment to civil and human rights characterized all aspects of his career. Today, Juniata awards the Raymond R. Day ’45 Social Work Award to students with outstanding academic records and commitment to helping others with a POE in sociology or related areas.

The elder Ray was born in Huntingdon, Pa., as one of seven children. After earning his bachelor’s degree at Juniata, Day went on to earn a divinity degree at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and an advanced degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

But there is more than one Ray Day. The globetrotting helpful person in the story is the nephew of the man who established the endowed scholarship in 1987. Raymond R. Day ’45 was one of the first African American graduates of Juniata College. Day led a distinguished career as a professor and sociological researcher at the College of Wooster and director of Beacon House in Chicago—a home created to help families cope with poverty, crime, and other challenges.

His work was characterized by years of advocacy

to raise awareness and generate solutions to endemic poverty and its related struggles in U.S. cities.

Helping to settle Haitian refugees in the Dominican Republic, Day visits Don Gregoria, a western village near the border of Haiti. His role was to support YMCA efforts in the country, efforts that were quite controversial at the time.

“I had a two-year assignment in Jamaica,” he says. “That was my graduate education. My MBA and my Ph.D. When you’re out there, you’re on your own.

I had the four months of training for background, then some prep in Mexico— but then I was dropped in the field.”

While in Jamaica, Day started volunteering his time doing literacy tutoring in the local community at night, after his Corps work was finished.

“That was the most rewarding thing for me—working with folks who couldn’t read or write and helping them do it,” he says. “I got letters from them. When you

get a letter from someone you knew three or four years ago could not read or write, it does something for you. Little things mean so much. I still hear from some of those folks today.”

Day opened to the world in other ways while at Juniata, as the Civil Rights movement was accelerating. He had personal decisions and conflicts to navigate.

“I knew I was at a point where I had to make decisions, especially about my involvement in student activities in the South,” Day recalls. “I was trying to stay focused on my education but I also cared

about supporting the movement for major changes in the country.”

Day thought about leaving college to dedicate himself wholly to the Civil Rights movement. He sought advice from people around him, including local minister Jerry Witt ’59. Witt urged Day to continue his studies while supporting students and the movement.

“I never made the trip down,” Day says. “I have had to deal with that internally. I’m not sure when I realized I made the right decision, but at one point I knew I did. Things worked out. I have helped people in other ways.”

Day has established the Raymond E. Day ’66 Endowed Scholarship, which will be used to help students from historically underrepresented groups afford a Juniata education.

“I was looking for what I could do to be helpful to Juniata,” Day says. “I owned a house I rented and the tenant passed. I realized I could make a bigger gift if I just gave the house to Juniata, didn’t lose value due to taxes, and let them sell it and use the cash to fund a scholarship.”

Ray says a conversation with Joel Diamond, senior director of major gifts at Juniata, helped him figure out how to make the real estate gift work.

“My deep hope is that it encourages more minority students to apply,” Day says. “When I talk with young African American students, even family members, most people don’t understand the value and they fear the cost. I know great opportunities exist for minority students from all around the country at Juniata.”

Day’s mark on the world is written in the homes of families who emigrated as refugees and in the letters from people who wrote their first words under his teaching. It will be written for a long time to come, as well, in the letters to students that tell them of a scholarship made possible by Raymond E. Day. >J<

A Powerful Purpose: Professor Inspires Future Teachers to Lead Through Special Education

When Sarah Jane DeHaas, Martin G. Brumbaugh Professor of Education, was a young girl, she traveled yearly with her church group to a state hospital in Hollidaysburg, which, at the time, served people who had a mental illness or an intellectual disability. As she sang Christmas carols along with her friends, she remembers looking into the audience at the individuals, who she could see were disenfranchised.

“The visual of that has always stuck with me, and through the years, I’ve just felt as though those individuals didn’t have rights, or that their human rights were being denied,” DeHaas says.

Recognizing this marginalization wasn’t enough for DeHaas; she needed to help change the situation. As the years went on, she dedicated her summers to teaching swim lessons to and taking care of children with disabilities in group homes. She cherishes these experiences, hoping that she made an impact on the quality of their lives. These moments ultimately drove her passion for teaching and being an advocate for inclusion.

“I have always enjoyed learning and I’ve always wanted to be a teacher,” DeHaas says. “That, coupled with experiences I had growing up, formed what I believe has been my career, my professional life, and my purpose.”

After earning a bachelor’s degree in special and elementary education from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in special education and educational leadership from Providence College, and a doctorate in special education and human development from Penn State University, DeHaas’s dedication to teaching took her to the University of Northern Colorado. There, she began to teach education students about working with students with disabilities.

Eventually, DeHaas missed the east coast and felt compelled to take a chance at an opportunity here at Juniata.

“Juniata happened to be advertising for a special education faculty member to continue to develop a dual-certification program, which is exactly what I had been trying to do in Colorado because that was where my interest had been at the time,” DeHaas recalls.

When she visited campus for her interview, DeHaas discovered that she shared values with the Juniata’s Education Department, whose members held progressive views on inclusive education.

“That was a key component, to have faculty that already embraced the belief system that we need to prepare teachers to work with children that exist on a continuum of strengths and need,” she says.

DeHaas’s admiration for teaching special education at Juniata has continued to grow over the years, a purpose she passes on to the future teachers she helps to prepare. As her career at the College has progressed, she has recognized the value that a liberal arts college gives to its students and what students can give back to it.

“I’ve learned that liberal arts schools are perfect for preparing teachers because not only do students get the department curriculum, but the college curriculum teaches them about the world, along with problem solving, critical thinking, and self-determination,” she says. “Because they are emerging adults, they teach me about their perspective of the world. When they teach me their perspective, I can then tailor my courses to address their concerns.”

Through courses like Social, Emotional, and Behavior Disabilities and Differentiated Instruction, DeHaas gives students the skills and knowledge they need to be successful as future teachers of students with disabilities. She also advocates for and teaches about working with people with special needs by publishing articles in peerreviewed journals and presenting to other professors at state

and national conferences. Her expertise lies in assessing and determining the strengths and needs of individuals to influence the quality of their lives.

Singing Christmas carols, teaching swimming lessons, leading in the classroom, or serving as an academic adviser, DeHaas works to empower all through her knowledge of special education—and in so doing, she passes on a powerful purpose to all who partner with her.

“Everyone exists on a continuum and throughout our lives, we have good times and challenging times,” DeHaas says. “The value of special education is not only preparing future teachers for students of diversity, but also for people with diversity in their lives.” >J<

Jonathan Burns, instructor in international studies, Isaac Fisher ’19, and Hunter Winters ’21 hosted 25 combat veterans from Team Rubicon in an archaeological field session at Fort Ligonier, involving them in the process of excavation for therapy and education.

Douglas Glazier, professor of biology, was invited to be on the advisory board of the journal Sci, which publishes articles in all fields of science. He published a chapter on crustacean offspring production in The Natural History of Crustacea: Life Histories, Volume 5. Glazier gave a presentation on “Toward a Unifying Explanation of Variation in Body-mass Scaling of Offspring Size in Animals,

Plants, and Unicellular Organisms” at the Gordon Research Conference on Unifying Ecology Across Scales at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine.

Glazier also co-authored a presentation on metabolic scaling in squids and other cephalopods at the annual meeting of the Society of Experimental Biology in Florence, Italy.

Monika Malewska, professor of art, was invited to give a presentation on “Aesthetics of Connections: Eclecticism and Playing with Convention as well as Identifying Traditional Elements in Contemporary Japanese Art” at The Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw, Poland.

George Merovich, associate professor of environmental sciences, received a $75,000 grant from the Degenstein Foundation to support student researchers conducting a pre-restoration analysis on two sites within the Little Juniata River watershed as part of the Susquehanna River Heartland Coalition for Environmental Studies. Merovich also received a U.S. Department of Interior, Fish, and Wildlife grant through the University of Maryland on “Quantifying Multiple Ecosystem-level Threats to the Upper Juniata River System from the Invasion and Occupation of Rusty Crayfish.” He presented “Temporal and Spatial Variation in EDCs in the Upper Juniata River System, Celebration of the Freshwater Research Initiative” at Susquehanna University and “Impact of Shale Gas Development on Stream Benthic Macroinvertebrates and Water Quality in West Virginia” at the Symposium on Wildlife Responses to Marcellus-Utica Shale Gas Development and the Next Steps for Wildlife Conservation at the 25th Annual The Wildlife Society Conference in Cleveland, Ohio. Norris Muth, associate professor of biology, accepted an invitation to join the editorial board of Plant Ecology.

Roy Nagle, director of environmental health and safety, published “Frontloading Life Histories: The Enduring Influence of Juvenile Growth on Age, Size, and Reproduction of Primiparous Female Freshwater Turtles” in the journal Evolutionary Ecology Research. He was also invited to be an associate editor of the journal Herpetological Conservation and Biology.

Loren Rhodes, Information Technology Endowed Chair, and Kim Roth, professor of mathematics, presented “Introduction to Data Science with No Prerequisites” at the Electronic Conference on Teaching Statistics.

Kim Roth, professor of mathematics, earned the Math and the Microbiome Innovation Award for Organization of Interkingdom Microbial Communities from the Mathematical Biosciences Institute at Ohio State. Blake Colaianne ’11 enjoyed doing demonstrations for his ninth-grade students and, although he nicknamed one series of demonstrations “Fire Fridays,” he never once set off a fire alarm.

HE REMEMBERS being called to teach after a star projector illuminated stars on his ceiling as a child. After seeing stars, Blake gave his parents lessons on astronomy for hours because he was intrigued by the vastness and mystery of outer space. His goal was to be like Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus show.

HE TEACHES in an age when some students struggle to go an entire period without checking their phone. So, he sees it as his challenge to keep his students engaged.

HE WAS influenced by Kathleen Biddle, professor of education at Juniata, who taught him the importance of personalizing your learning. Because of her leadership, Blake works to make his students feel seen and heard, and reminds them that their ideas matter and they matter.

Blake A. Colaianne ’11 started his teaching career at Dallastown Area School District, where he won the New Pennsylvania Science Teacher of the Year Award in 2013, and was recognized by the National Association for Science Teachers with an Outstanding Science Teacher Award. Blake’s students also nominated him for a McDonald’s Appreciation Award, which he won—including an in-class celebration of parfaits, coffee, and other treats.

After five years, Blake decided to return to school himself, earning a master’s degree in mind, brain, and education from Harvard University and another in earth science education from Penn State.

class. Blake allowed his student to make up work he had missed. In the end, the student was able to attend the prom and—together with Blake’s help—wrote a thank you letter to his mom.

HE ENJOYED teaching geology in central Pennsylvania, and collaborated with Matt Powell, associate professor of geology, and Ryan Mathur ’96, professor of geology, to take his students on several hunts for fossils.

HE RECALLS one specific moment from these field trips: he and his students were at the top of a mountain when one of the students asked him to lead the class through a mindfulness exercise. During that moment—when students were focusing on being intensely aware of what they were sensing—Blake had an epiphany, and he realized exactly what he wanted to do.

BLAKE UNDERSTANDS the importance of letting students get to know their teacher as a human being, and makes sure to talk to his students about his

life outside the classroom to make them feel comfortable. Similarly, he lets his students be themselves and express their personalities, too.

HIS ADVICE to future teachers is to spend an entire school day with a practicing teacher—from start to finish. This will help aspiring educators learn about all the in-between tasks that have to be completed and the decisions that must be made.

HE BELIEVES that people who are willing to teach are brave, courageous, and caring, pointing out that the teachers who care and become emotionally invested are hit with emotional burnout the hardest.

BLAKE IS PURSUING his doctorate in human development and family studies at Penn State—just like Ms. Frizzle in the Netflix reboot of The Magic School Bus. He’s learning how to develop mindfulness and compassion-based programs for students and teachers. >J<

Saraunda Andoniades Loughlin ’67 started her teaching career in the Baltimore City Public School System in fall 1967. She taught high school English at two other schools before finding her 22-year home at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, where she taught primarily ninth and tenth grade honors English. After retiring in 2004, she worked for the school’s alumni relations office and foundation. In 2015, Sandy was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame, which is typically reserved for graduates of the school.

SHE SAYS teaching is a calling and not just a job. Juniata professors Harold Binkley, the inaugural holder of the John Downey Benedict Professorship of English, and Esther Doyle, the John Downey Benedict Professor of English, showed her how to make the words of literature come off the page while the lessons of Philbrook Smith, Charles A. Dana Professor of History, convinced Sandy that students should understand an author’s audience and the historical context of the work before grappling with its meaning.

Howard Crouch, Martin G. Brumbaugh Professor Emeritus of Education, and her Huntingdon Area High School cooperating teacher, Mrs. Kathryn Joyce, gave her a solid foundation in teaching, planning, and classroom management, which she would augment and adapt with years of classroom experience.

SHE EXPERIENCED the rioting and civil unrest that followed the assassinations of Dr. King and Senator Robert Kennedy,

which took place in the spring of her first year in Baltimore City. Thankfully, Juniata had been preparing her even for this.

During her sophomore year at Juniata, conversations about civil rights swirled around campus, some Juniata faculty and students traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, and Steve Engle ’66 wrote for the New Century Singers, all of which played a part in opening Sandy to a deeper awareness of the destructiveness of racial injustice.

SHE COUNTS herself fortunate to have been a teacher of timeless literature with universal themes, which she used to foster understanding about both the worst and the best of the human condition. Her favorite lessons to teach were the works of Dickens and Shakespeare.

HER FAVORITE memories of teaching include her students performing at the Baltimore Shakespeare Symposium. There, Sandy’s students made the Bard’s work contemporary by interjecting references from Saturday Night Live and The Arsenio Hall Show, modeling Shakespeare’s gift for working current events into his plays.

SHE RECEIVED her favorite teacher gift from the Poly Class of 1998. At their Farewell assembly, they gave her a poem

written in her honor and framed with the class colors that still sits on her desk.

HER ADVICE to future teachers is to dream for students until they can dream for themselves.

HER GREATEST FRUSTRATION is the stereotype that teachers are overpaid for working a short day and having summers off. Instead, she worked 60-hour weeks, often putting in longer hours during term paper season. Summers were devoted to continuing her education and preparing for the next year’s course of study.

SHE HAS RECRUITED 10 students to Juniata, and has helped scores of others to visit, even if they first thought of the College as “Juanita.” She still regularly represents Juniata at college fairs, often saying, “Where else can you find backpacks stacked up outside the dining hall?”

SANDY HAS retired to Huntingdon, Pa., and regularly attends campus events.

She was the 2015 recipient of the H. B. Brumbaugh Alumni Service Award, serves as a class fund agent, 50th reunion committee member, and is proud to say her daughter, Cara Loughlin ’94, is also an alumna. >J<

SHE STARTED teaching when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was still alive and before the U.S. had put a man on the moon. In 2004, at the end of her career, most classrooms still had only one desktop computer, and it was designated for teacher use.

Sandy Andoniades Loughlin ’67 didn’t have a long list of rules for her classroom, but one she insisted upon was, “Don’t say, ‘Shut Up!’” which helped students practice respect.

The couple enjoys renting a retreat center at Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland every year for a family gathering, which includes six Juniata graduates.

Q: How do you use what you’ve learned at Juniata in everyday life?

A: When I went to Juniata, my work study job was in sports information and I quickly realized that sports information was my passion. I molded my Program of Emphasis to be able to apply what I was learning to my future in sports information. In job interviews, I sold myself on the graphic design side of things, the artistic side of things. Whether it’s signage, posters, advertisements, or the like, I focus on graphic design nowadays. So, I take everything that I learned at Juniata and I constantly use it everywhere.

Q: What is your favorite thing about your job?

A: In the beginning, when I was just starting out in the field, I was working 60- to 65-hour weeks. I was focused and ambitious, and my schedule was constant. I am proud of my work at Colonial Conference and now I’m also happy because I have a nine-to-five job and I get to do fun things like working on the media cooperation team at the Final Four while having better work-life balance.

Q: What was it like to assist on a Sports Illustrated cover shoot with Alex Ovechkin?

A: My job was to serve as top assistant for this shoot and I had to memorize the different poses that Sports Illustrated gave us for Ovechkin. They had an idea of what they wanted the cover to look like and I was in charge of making sure we captured that image in 10 minutes.

When Ovechkin walked in, I had the screen ready for the poses and we got down to business–only it turned out we had five minutes instead of 10 to get this shot done. I really wanted Ovechkin to hold the trophy out in front of him with his arms out, but I realized his elbows were way to wide for the cover. I came up with the idea of having Ovechkin crossing his arms over the Stanley Cup, and they took my idea and used it for the cover. I was so excited that that was the one they picked! We didn’t know until Monday night when Ovechkin was on Jimmy Fallon, and showed the cover.

Joseph P. Campbell III Q: What is the Hilton Prize Coalition?

A: The Hilton Prize Coalition is an independent alliance of the 22 winners of the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize. The group works together to advance each member’s unique mission and achieve collective impact in humanitarian assistance, human rights, development, education, and health. The fellowship develops young leaders who possess not only subject matter skills and expertise, but also the leadership skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

Q: Were there specific experiences at Juniata that helped kindle your passion for nonprofit work and human resource management?

A: At Juniata I found my passion for social justice during a time when the Black Lives Matter movement was at its peak and students all over the U.S. were speaking out against racism and bigotry at many higher education institutions. My mentors at Juniata encouraged me to help organize protests of police brutality and serve as a voice on campus for equity and inclusion. I took classes with professors who encouraged us to read the book Toxic Charity and examined the dynamics of humanitarian work. I also took a course called Social Entrepreneurship, which gave me a different perspective and encouraged me to apply a business mindset to the dynamics of social and humanitarian work.

Q: What have you done since graduation and what’s next?

A: After graduation, I moved back to my hometown of Pittsburgh and worked at the American Civil Liberties Union. Then, I did community organizing work for a community development agency. It was through these experiences that I recognized the importance of human resources and human capital in the nonprofit and social services fields. So, I moved to Washington D.C. to pursue my master’s degree. In the future, I will continue to develop my career in human resource management. My ultimate goal is to contribute to the important exchange of values, idea, innovations, and best practices between for profit and non-profit organizations.

Carolyn A. Copenheaver

was awarded the 2018 Carl Alwin Schenck Award from the Society of American Foresters.

She is the first woman to receive this honor in the award’s 30-year history. Carolyn currently serves as associate professor of forest ecology in Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment. She has been teaching at Virginia Tech for 18 years, publishing 23 papers with 70 graduate students in the process.

Erin (Cawley) Chilcote

completed her second presentation, “Increasing Student Engagement in Math, Science, and Social Studies: Project-Based Learning with a Touch of Crazy!” at the Maryland Educators of Gifted Students Conference. Erin serves as a fourth grade teacher of math and science in Bowie, Md., and was awarded a grant from the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company’s Bright Ideas Teachers’ Grant Program for her students to build solar panels to charge their classroom Chromebooks.

celebrated Mountain Day with both of her sons on two separate days. On their surprise days, she woke her sons up and allowed them to spend the day doing whatever they wanted.

She is currently work ing at the National Buildings Museum and recently helped curate the new Ruby Slippers exhibition at the National Museum of American History, which features the same slippers that Dorothy wore in The Wizard of Oz.

Q: What was it like working at the Smithsonian?

A: It was amazing! I dreamt as a child of working in the Smithsonian but never thought it would happen. Thanks to studying at Juniata and abroad at Lincoln University, I can say I have done that. One of my jobs was to make the graphic labels for the exhibition, but every day something different was going on that I could get involved in.

Rachel M. Feagley

joined the Peace Corps, through which she will help promote world peace and friendship through wildlife conservation and land management in Querétaro, Mexico. She is completing a 27-month term in Central Mexico.

Haley D. Myers

accepted a position as an English teacher at Mount Union Area High School where she will teach 11th and 12th grade students.

I most enjoyed the people. We worked with everyone: educators, editors, curators, designers, and most importantly, the production shop. The shop is where most of the designs come to fruition. There, we had the printing specialists and cabinet makers who helped answer our more structural and engineering questions. The whole process was collaborative.

Q: Can you say a little about the kind of on-the-ground decisions that went into curating this exhibition?

A: Yes. Take the case the slippers were displayed in, for instance. There were so many things that went into its design. We had to look at UV protection, temperature and humidity controls, and pollution monitors! As for its location, the one thing we could always agree on was that people should be able to walk completely around the case, both for visibility and for crowd control.

The more difficult decisions came when deciding what else went in the gallery.

We had considered a green fabric curtain to resemble the famous quote, “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain,” but that became a fire hazard and the director of the museum didn’t think it looked luscious enough. Eventually, it was decided that we would go with a mesh chain. The team did decide to go with my choice for the exhibition’s carpeting, which I’m very happy about.

Q: Are you a fan of The Wizard of Oz? And if so, what character would you be and why?

A: I love it! Actually, my family would watch it each year on Thanksgiving. I think I’d be the scarecrow because like him, I’m on a quest for knowledge.

Obituaries Charles F. Reeder ’42

April 22, 2018—Charles served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II and as a physician in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He also earned a master’s degree in science from Cornell University and studied at Cornell Medical School. In 1948, Charles set up the first private practice in Geistown, and practiced solo for 23 years.

Following this, he became the first director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital in Johnstown. Additionally, he lectured at Temple University and Hershey Medical Center. His hobbies included spending time with family, traveling, sailing, hiking, swimming, reading, tending to his garden, and woodworking. Charles was preceded in death by wife Dolly (Custer) Reeder ’43, and is survived by daughters Lauri Reeder ’75, Robin, and Nan, son Rick, and three grandchildren.

D. Eleanor (Saylor) Barr ’44

April 27, 2017—Eleanor was a resident of Pottstown, Pa. She was preceded in death by husband Robert Barr ’43 and mother Margaret (Keim) Saylor, Class of 1910. She is survived by daughters Susan (Barr) Freimuth ’71, Kathryn (Barr) Hake ’74, Nancy, Dorothy, and Mary, brother John Saylor ’42, and eight grandchildren, including Scott Newcomer ’96.

Eleanor F. (Kennedy) Roberts ’44

Oct. 14, 2018—Eleanor worked as a chemist in Philadelphia, Pa., for many years until relocating with her family to Charlotte, N.C. After the move, she studied statistics and computer programming at Central Piedmont Community College, which sparked her 20-year computer programming career, including many years at AT&T before her retirement. For leisure, she enjoyed books, jigsaw puzzles, flowers, and needle arts.

Eleanor was preceded in death by husband William, and is survived by son John, daughter Wendy, and four grandchildren.

Betty J. (Cochrane) Blough ’45

July 20, 2018—Betty served as a language arts teacher for Richland Township schools in Johnstown for many years. After retirement, she moved to Calabash, N.C., to enjoy hobbies like boating, golfing, knitting, sewing, painting, creating dollhouses, woodcarving,

and quilting. She was a former member of the Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church and Calabash Presbyterian Church, where she acted as elder and newsletter editor. For her service and contributions to the church, Betty was awarded an honorary lifetime membership to Presbyterian Women (USA).

She was preceded in death by husband E. Percy Blough Jr. ’47, and is survived by son A. Randolph, daughters Patricia (Blough) Straub ’71, Gerry, and Nancy, and seven grandchildren.

Barbara A. Boyd ’45

Aug. 2, 2018—Barbara was a longtime resident of Summit, N.J. She earned a master’s degree in Christian education from the New York Theological Seminary (then known as The Biblical Seminary of New York) in New York, N.Y. Throughout her career, she taught elementary school and served on the InterVarsity staff. Barbara was preceded in death by brother Robert Boyd Jr. ’40.

Ruth B. (Barnett) Bargerstock ’47

June 20, 2018—Ruth was a home economics and special education teacher in Pennsylvania public schools for three decades. She was talented in many ways–a seamstress, a violinist, and a culinary artist. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Nepal, China, India, Southeast Asia, Great Britain, and Greece.

Ruth was preceded in death by husband Charles Bargerstock Jr. ’47. She is survived by daughter Nancy, sons Charles and Andrew, and two granddaughters.

Wayne M. Meyers ’47

Sept. 12, 2018—While at Juniata, Wayne was drafted and served in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II. He returned to finish his degree and went on to earn a master’s degree and doctor of philosophy in medical microbiology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., as well as a doctor of medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Wayne served as a missionary alongside his wife in Burundi and the Democractic Republic of Congo for several years, during which he conducted research on leprosy, Buruli ulcer, filariasis, and other tropical infectious diseases. He served in many roles such as chief of microbiology and mycobacteriology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, registrar for the Leprosy Registry, chair of the Board of Directors of the American Leprosy Missions,

president of the International Leprosy Association, and more. Wayne contributed to the understanding of and treatment of leprosy by helping to develop the Leprosy Registry and developing the concept of leprosy as a zoonosis. For his work, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Baylor College of Medicine Alumni Association, the Damien-Dutton Society for Leprosy Aid Award, the Belgian Government’s ITG Medallion, the Juniata College Alumni Achievement Award and William E. Swigart Jr. ’37 Humanitarian Award, and an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Juniata in 1986.

He was preceded in death by brother Amos Meyers Sr. ’49. Wayne is survived by wife Esther, daughters Sara and Amy, sons George and Daniel, and four grandchildren.

Vivian I. (Baker) Dealaman Tschopp ’48

July 21, 2018—Vivian enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 after Pearl Harbor and served in Stillwater, Okla., and Washington, D.C. After her time at Juniata, she taught English and art at Huntingdon High School, Mount Union High School, York High School, and Binghamton High School in New York. After moving to Chambersburg, she taught there until retirement. Vivian was preceded in death by two husbands, Adolph and David.

May 4, 2018—After Juniata, Jim earned degrees from the New York Bible Institute, Columbia University in Manhattan, N.Y., and Bethany Seminary of Chicago, Ill. For several decades, he served as pastor to Churches of the Brethren in Brooklyn, Philadelphia, York, Greensburg, Montgomery, Ligonier, and Mt. Pleasant, and he visited hospitals, prisons, and other organizations to provide support to people in need. Jim was preceded in death by wife Grace, and is survived by daughter Debbie, sons Frank D’Amico ’84, Joseph D’Amico ’86, and James, and 11 grandchildren, including Peter D’Amico ’20.

John F. Kulp Jr. ’49

Oct. 26, 2018—John left Juniata to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II, patrolling the North Atlantic and the English Channel. After the war, John returned to Juniata and went on to earn a master’s degree at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. He was employed by the General Electric Company in Schenectady, N.Y., where he held several positions over the course of his 38-year career. After retiring, he relocated to Peoria, Ariz., where he enjoyed golfing, gardening, and traveling. John was preceded in death by wife Joanne and daughter Deborah. He is survived by son Alan Kulp ’76, daughter Patricia, and five grandchildren.

Aug. 8, 2018—Doris was a home economics teacher in Waynesboro, Pa., and Perryville, Md. She was active in her churches, serving as organist, Sunday school teacher, and missions and circle leader. She enjoyed playing bridge and Wii-bowling during her time at Jenner’s Pond Retirement Community in West Grove, Pa. Doris was preceded in death by husband H. Llewellyn Merrit ’46, son Barry, and a grandson. She is survived by daughter Lynne, son Tom, and three grandchildren.

Sherwood S. Cordier ’50

Aug. 20, 2018—Sherwood earned a doctorate in history from the University of Minnesota, gaining expertise in international and military affairs that helped him receive a North Atlantic Treaty Organization Research Fellowship in the late 1980s. He authored many articles and books, which were published in England, Germany, Canada, and the U.S. He was also the recipient of many awards and honors for excellence in teaching.

Sherwood spent extensive time traveling with his wife, specifically around the mountains of the western U.S., Alaska, Canada, the Alps, Scotland, and Norway. He is survived by wife Mary, daughter Ann, and five grandchildren.

Oct. 2, 2018—After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Philippine Sea, Chick was employed by Ward Trucking for more than 50 years. He was a lifelong member of the Altoona First Church of the Brethren, and was dedicated to bettering his community through involvement in many church and civic organizations.

Edith (Roberts) McCarren ’51

May 14, 2018—Edith earned a registered nurse degree from Montgomery County Community College in Whitpain Township, Pa. She served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict as a cryptologic officer, and was a longtime employee of Abington Memorial Hospital and the Philadelphia School District. Additionally, she previously served as an Alumni Council member and Alumni Trustee at the College.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Charles and Walter. Edith is survived by daughters Florence (Roberts) Corbin ’74, Ruth (McCarren) Ianozi ’78, Rebecca, and Martha, sons David McCarren ’77, Peter, and Samuel, and 16 grandchildren.

Harry A. Rothrock ’51

Nov. 11, 2017—Harry served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was a bombardier navigator on a B24 aircraft. Throughout his career, he coached softball, baseball, and basketball teams, and he taught mathematics at Strodes Mills Middle School and Rothrock High School. He attended the Milroy Methodist Church. Harry was preceded in death by wife Louise and sister Iris (Rothrock) Dubendorf ’62. He is survived by son William and a grandson.

Clair D. Schaffner ’51

June 13, 2018—After graduation, Clair served in the U.S. Air Force and earned a master’s degree in elementary education at Cortland State Teachers College in Cortland, N.Y., and a certification in elementary administration from the State University of New York at Geneseo. Clair taught elementary education and vocal music for grades four through six in Waterloo, Geneva, Ocala, and Myrtle Beach.

He also served as an elementary school principal for 16 years and a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was organist and choir director for nearly three decades.

With his wife, Clair sang duets for churches and community events, and volunteered with several organizations like the American Red Cross and the Community Lunch Program.

Clair was preceded in death by son Scott, and is survived by wife Carol (Lowdermilk) Schaffner ’54, daughters Diane, Bonnie, and Lori, and seven grandchildren.

Aug. 3, 2018—James served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and then obtained a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a longtime resident of Doylestown. He taught honors English at Abington High School, and served as chair of the English department until his retirement in 1987. James is survived by partner Donald.

H. Dale Zimmerman ’52

May 2, 2018—Dale attended seminaries at Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh and Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago, Ill., becoming an ordained minister in 1952. He served as a bi-vocational minister at several Churches of the Brethren.

Additionally, he earned a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in counselor education from the Pennsylvania State University, a school psychology certification from Duquesne University, and a certification as a Pennsylvania licensed psychologist. Dale began his career employed in positions such as social studies teacher, basketball coach, school counselor, counseling administrator, and school psychologist. Later, he began a 26-year tenure at Kutztown University as a graduate studies professor in counselor education and a director of the Department of Counseling Services, until his retirement in 1995. Dale is survived by wife Norma and son Jeffrey.

Oct. 1, 2018—Martha worked as a document control specialist and was an active member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren. She was preceded in death by husband Lloyd Mauck Sr. ’53, and is survived by son Lloyd Jr., daughter Aimee, and two grandsons.

Sep. 7, 2018—John retired as teacher and director of religious education at the Milton Hershey School. He was credited for starting many of the womens athletic programs when young women were first admitted to the school. He also served as varsity basketball coach for 27 years, and was involved with the Hershey Youth Flag Football League and the Milton Hershey School Alumni Association. John’s other hobbies included fishing, boating, and traveling in his RV. He was preceded in death by brother Richard Cook ’56. Sept. 30, 2018—Betty taught English and music in the Indiana public schools for 40 years, and she taught religious education for the associated churches of Fort Wayne. She played piano and sang, specifically with the Trinity English Church Choir and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Choir. Betty was preceded in death by husband Harry and son H. John. She is survived by sons David and Paul, and nine grandchildren.

Aug. 21, 2018—During her career, Betty Lou was a teacher in Pennsylvania and Ohio schools, and retired from the Troy-Miami County Public Library. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Dublin, Ohio. She was also a former member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Tipp City, Ohio, and the American Association of University Women in Troy, Fla. Betty Lou was preceded in death by sister Anna Mary (Smith-Renfrew) Whitford ’60 and granddaughter Hannah. She is survived by husband Odell, son Daniel, daughter Dorcas, and eight grandchildren.

Dec. 28, 2017—Bill worked as an organic chemist with DuPont at the experimental station in Wilmington, Del., where he earned the honor of being named a DuPont Fellow.

He retired in 1997, moving to Albuquerque, N.M., with his wife. He enjoyed hiking, golfing, and volunteering for organizations like the Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity and Knights of Columbus at Prince of Peace Catholic Community. Chuck was active in his community, serving as treasurer and trustee of the Valley Forge Presbyterian Church and volunteer in the Upper Merion Meals on Wheels organization. Aug. 31, 2018—After leaving Juniata, Joan graduated from Wilson College, and went on to study at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania. She taught mathematics in the Upper Merion and Baltimore County School Districts until she later moved on to work in the actuarial department of the Insurance Company of North America. She held various leadership roles in the company until her retirement as vice president of the CIGNA Property and Casualty Companies Group. Additionally, Joan was a charter member of the Insurance Data Management Association and the Insurance Accounting and Statistical Association, as well as other organizations.

For leisure, she enjoyed traveling with her grandson. Joan was preceded in death by husband Raymond. She is survived by daughter Raynette and a grandson.

May 28, 2018—Joan earned a master’s degree in education administration from Rider University in Mercer County, N.J. She taught in high schools for 34 years, including Pennsbury High School where she served as curriculum coordinator, child development teacher, and director of the school’s community nursery school. When not serving in these roles, Joan was an active participant in many charitable organizations and social committees. May 6, 2018—Before graduating from Juniata, Sam served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. Sam began his career with U.S. Steel in Johnstown, a position that took him to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He later moved to Florida where, after working as a financial consultant, he was employed by Eltec Instruments in Daytona Beach. He held several positions within the company including president and chief executive officer, as well as executive consultant, which he maintained until his passing. Sam was preceded in death by first wife Marilyn. He is survived by wife Aline, daughter Suzanne, son Sam, and two grandchildren.

Oct. 25, 2018—Barry graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa. He specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, which he practiced at Jefferson Hospital and Bryn Mawr Hospital, where he also served as chair of the department of gynecology.

Throughout his career, he also began a medical practice in Philadelphia, served two years in the U.S. Army as a physician, and became a base physician in the Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. Barry’s faith was his bedrock and his hope. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, reading, building model trains, painting, and volunteering in the community.

He is survived by daughters Ann (Montgomery) Campagna ’82 and Susan, son John Montgomery ’86, and nine grandchildren, including Elizabeth Montgomery ’22.

July 19, 2018—George was employed by General Telephone Co. in Erie and served as a volunteer fireman for West Ridge Hose Co. He later worked with his family at Beard Oil Co. George was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Clearfield, Fairbrook United Methodist Church of Pennsylvania Furnace, the Clearfield Kiwanis Club, Clearfield Masonic Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons, the Clearfield YMCA board, and the board of directors for the Clearfield Bank and Trust Co. Aug. 16, 2018—Carolyn was active in many organizations while at Juniata and worked for the Dean’s office while on campus. She was a teacher and spent many years working with the Women’s Medical Auxiliary and numerous other charities. She was treasurer of the Tulane AMA and volunteered at Sahuaro High School as Grant Aide. Carolyn loved to paint, garden, and spend time with her family. Sept. 14, 2018—Donald earned a master of business administration degree from the University of North Carolina. He went on to a successful career in the chemical industry and finished his career helping companies move from insolvency to profitability. For leisure, Donald gardened, ran half-marathons, and played competitive tennis. He is survived by wife Lisa, son Edwin, daughter Laura, and five grandchildren.

June 19, 2018—After leaving Juniata, Jerome went on to graduate from the Pennsylvania State University, earned a master’s degree from Western Maryland College, and continued into doctoral studies. Although he was an educator, and served as a teacher and guidance counselor for Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, he also played the roles of truck driver, dragline operator, store clerk, contractor, snow plow driver, salesman, racecar driver, Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, and business owner (of Bradford Maintenance Service, Inc.) throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed watching Penn State and Shepherd University football, as well as boating, camping, fishing, skiing, playing softball, playing piano in a band, singing, and being with family.

Jerome was preceded in death by son Robert, and is survived by wife Elsie, sons Jerome and Nicholas, daughter Susan, and five grandchildren.

Henry F. Hain ’60

July 25, 2018—Henry continued his education through graduate work in psychology at New School University in New York, N.Y., and in philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa. He held many positions over his career including chemist, taxi driver, business owner, teaching assistant, and teacher. He retired from the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, where he was the director of the housing division. Henry had many passions: landscaping, painting abstract works, reading, and being an activist.

He participated in marches in Washington and Harrisburg for a variety of causes, and he worked with a black power movement in Philadelphia in the 1960s. Henry is survived by wife Emily, daughter Amaya, son Scott, and three grandchildren.

Throughout his career, he coached football and baseball at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., then football at Columbia University in New York, N.Y. Oct. 22, 2018—Walter earned a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and served his residency at the former Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg, Pa. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Walter actively practiced medicine for more than 50 years, maintaining a practice and serving as mentor and director of the residency program at Community General Osteopathic Hospital.

July 29, 2018—Dwight served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Following his graduation from Juniata, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh’s Dental School and practiced general dentistry in York, Pa., for 25 years. He was a member of the Faith United Church of Christ and the Outdoor Country Club, as well as an Eagle Scout, golfer, and fan of the University of Pittsburgh.

Oct. 4, 2018—Following graduation from Juniata, Alice earned a degree from the Allentown Hospital School of Nursing and served as a VISTA volunteer in Kentucky.

Aug. 20, 2018—Thomas was a plumbing supplies salesman until he retired in 2015. He was also a member of the Greenlee Hunting Club, the Standing Stone VFW Post 1754, Loyal Order of Moose in Lewistown, and the Mill Creek Volunteer Fire Co. Additionally, he served as youth baseball umpire for the PIAA and other local associations. For leisure, he enjoyed hunting, playing golf, spending time at his cottage, and watching Pittsburgh Pirates baseball. The Reverend Richard Cartwright was known as “Rev” to many athletes and friends on the Juniata campus. An ordained United Methodist minister who for the past five years has served as the campus minister for athletics at Juniata, Rick was a graduate of Duke Divinity School and had served as a pastor to several United Methodist congregations over the years.

Rick took great joy in working with young athletes and coaches, and enjoyed staying physically active with the many friends he made at the College. Rick loved many things; high on the list were other people. He was a caring proponent of racial, social, and economic justice. Socially, he enjoyed watching and debating his favorite sport teams with friends and family. He was particularly a fan of Duke basketball, all teams Pittsburgh, Penn State Hockey, and the Altoona Curve.

A tattoo on his forearm read, “Carpe Diem,” the motto he adopted from his Uncle Tim Thomas.

It exemplified his motion through life; moving forward, finding light in dark, and looking forward to the next adventure while remembering his own history. On October 27, the College placed a memorial plaque at Knox Stadium which states: “In memory of Rev. Richard Cartwright, campus minister for athletics, 2013–2018. For his service to the campus community, the department of athletics, and our student athletes, always ready with a handshake, a smile, words of encouragement, or a moment of prayer, Rick’s commitment to Juniata, enthusiasm for athletics, and love for others remains an inspiration for us all.”

Rick was a Dad, and he loved spending time with his wife and their children as well as their pets.

January 20, 1955–August 3, 2018 Richard B. Cartwright was born on January 20, 1955, in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, to E. Bryan and Jane McClellan Cartwright. He was married to JoAnne Thomas Cartwright on May 17, 1976, at Conway Boatman Chapel in Barbourville, Kentucky. He is survived by his wife and their three children, Bryan T. Cartwright, Alexandria, Pennsylvania; John F. Cartwright, San Francisco, California; and Molly A. Cartwright, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Rick graduated from Bellefonte High School in 1972, Union College in 1976, and Duke University in 1979, when he received his Master of Divinity degree. He served his calling to ministry in the Susquehanna United Methodist Conference serving as pastor with several churches throughout central Pennsylvania. In addition to his parish ministry, he was active within his church conference for many years, serving as the executive secretary of the Student Aid Fund, volunteering on the Board of Ordained Ministries, and teaching courses at the Center of Spiritual Formation. He also had been an adjunct professor at Messiah College, Grantham, and most recently, he served as campus minister of athletics at Juniata.

Though he loved traveling to visit Pittsburgh or San Francisco, Rick’s immense love of central Pennsylvania’s natural beauty kept him in the general region of his birth. Rick passed away on Friday, August 3, 2018.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas. He was loved by many in his exceptionally large extended family, which he tended to and loved as it grew throughout his life, nurtured by his warm welcome.

I Met a Juniata Alum in the Most Unusual Place...

Tyler Kochel ’09 was walking home from running an errand in Menlo Park, Calif. He passed a woman who pointed out his Juniata hoodie. “Turns out, Beth Ann (Reuther) Lico ’83 and I live on neighboring streets! We stopped on the sidewalk and took a quick selfie on our way.

What a small world!”

“I was at a client organization doing an implementation plan for a Retirement Education program with the senior sponsors of the initiative and I was writing ideas down with a blue Juniata pen when one of the clients said, ‘Hey, who do you know at Juniata College?’ Proudly, I exclaimed that my son, Adam Grajewski ’21 is a current student and that I am an alum from the class of 1986. That client was S. Anne (Broderick) White ’73. We shared some great stories about the College and the people we both know. I really enjoyed meeting Anne!”

In June of 2017, Elizabeth Lor ’19 attended a dinner for her sister’s company, Joie Baby. During the dinner, she met Christopher Miller ’01.

Throughout the evening, they discussed their experiences at the College and even realized that they both attended Governor Mifflin High School.

“In July of 2018, while traveling in Colorado with my son and our church youth group, I wore a Juniata drawstring bag on a trip to the top of Pike’s Peak.

While admiring the view, I heard someone behind me ask if I went to Juniata College. I turned around and had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie Stover ’05.”

“In July 2016, I visited Yosemite National Park for the first time and wore an old Juniata t-shirt for hiking. I was eating lunch in the Ahwahnee Lodge when a man approached me from across the room and said, ‘I read your t-shirt and had to come over!’ It was Toby Tracy ’93. We didn’t know each other during college, but it was awesome to connect with another Juniatian in this remarkable setting!”

“I was at the Perry County Fair in August and I overheard a man being addressed as ‘Dr. Garber.’ The name seemed familiar, so I asked if his first name was ‘Roger.’ Yep! So, Roger Garber ’76 and I reminisced about our Juniata College days, as we both started in 1971 and graduated in 1976—I answered Richard Nixon’s call and he did a year of biochemistry at Millersville University. He remembered me as ‘a studious colleague and tea sipper and prayer meeting regular attendee.’ He has been practicing in Perry County for 35 years. Small world!”

In November 2017, Malinda (Yoder) Winder ’74 set off on a Danube river cruise with her husband, Juniata roommate Kathie (Wareham) Gasper ’74 and her husband Bill Gasper ’74, and friends. As they traveled from Germany through Austria and on to Budapest, they discovered that they were not the only Juniata alumni aboard! On the cruise, they met and enjoyed getting to know fellow passengers and Juniatians Karen (Greiss) Retzloff ’67, Heather Bailor ’02, and Aimee Reinaker ’12.

“After my wife and I recently parked our rig on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, I scored a gig in golf operations at Sea Pines Resort’s Atlantic Dunes and Heron Point courses. One day during a shift, small talk revealed that— holy Mountain Day!—both Daniel David ’67 and I graduated from ole Juniata and just one year apart! You would think we would have recognized each other. Huh? You mean we don’t exactly look like we did over 50 years ago?”

“Upon retiring, I moved to Boston to be closer to my daughter and her family. There, I joined a book club at the Newton Senior Center, where I became close friends with a woman named Jeannette Kensinger.

During one of the book club discussions, I shared some of my experiences of living in Pennsylvania and growing up in the Church of the Brethren.

Soon, Jeannette noticed this and revealed that her husband, Dale Kensinger ’63, had grown up in Altoona and went to Juniata College! We subsequently went for lunch together and shared memories of Juniata, including our favorite professors such as Ken Crosby, Ron Cherry, and Harold Binkley. It was amazing to reconnect with a former Juniatian whose life journey had taken him far from the halls of Huntingdon, as had mine, and we both wound up spending our ‘senior’ years in Boston!”

“I recently had the pleasure of meeting Fiona Skinner ’21, a current Juniata student who is outstanding and is a testament to the high quality of Juniata students. During our conversation, it had occurred to me that during alumni weekend in 1970, I met some alumni who had graduated in 1921, but I do not remember their names. Since I have the honor of meeting Juniata students whose graduations will span 100 years, with me in the middle at 1971, Fiona and I have decided to start a 100-year tradition. She promised me that she would make every effort to meet Juniata graduates from the class of 2071, and tell them that she met a graduate from 100 years ago. Then, she will ask them to promise to meet a graduate from the class of 2121. Fiona also said she would try to remember my name.”

Bekah Ford ’19 stretched her horizons—and her muscles—while studying abroad in New Zealand. Ford earned a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship to study abroad and was also awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in honor of her achievements in math and science. While at Juniata, Ford has earned the College’s genomics certification, worked as a barista at Standing Stone Coffee Company, and participated in Concert Choir, the Student-Alumni Association, PAX-O, and the American Society for Microbiology.
