A Family Affair: Mother and Daughter Graduate From Juniata A mother-daughter duo had much to celebrate during Juniata’s 140th commencement ceremony as they donned caps and gowns in preparation to receive their degrees.

Cindy Gibboney and her daughter, Samantha Ochs, both of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, shared a lot of time on campus over the past four years.

“It was really funny when I found out I would be graduating at the same time as Samantha,” Gibboney says. “I asked her if she wanted me to wait to take the last class. She said no, that it would be great to graduate together. I thought that was nice she wanted to do that.”

Gibboney, who is the director of enrollment and alumni engagement at the College, began taking courses eight years ago. Building on her associate’s degree, she began studies as a non-degree seeking student, but soon decided to actively pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

When she came to Juniata, Gibboney says she was impressed with the intensity the professors bring to the classroom and how intelligent the students are.

“I attended a community college for one year, in Oklahoma, and then, when we were overseas in Germany, I took a lot of courses ad hoc from the University of Maryland and City College of Chicago,” she says. “I would take all of these courses, but I never had a real college experience. That made me want to work harder. I wanted to prove that I could do it and I didn’t want to disappoint because I had been given this gift.”

Ochs, who graduated with a degree in environmental studies, came to Juniata following her graduation from Juniata Valley High School in 2014.

“I liked how it was not a very big campus, so I couldn’t get too lost when I first came,” she says. “The people were always friendly and nice. The environmental program was really good, too.”

Another draw for Ochs was the Raystown Field Station and the College’s study abroad program, which she took advantage of to spend a semester in Cork, Ireland, last spring.

The only class the two took together turned into a bit of a competition.

“We did take a summer class online, cognitive psychology,” Ochs says. “We had a little competition. Whoever got the best grade got treated to ice cream. I won!”

“She won by 0.2 percent,” Gibboney quickly counters. “It was so close.”

Adding to the fun, Gibboney’s younger daughter, Danielle Ochs, just completed her sophomore year at Juniata, where she is studying digital integrated media studio arts.

“She makes a lot of movies, so we’ve been able to be a part of her projects and to help her out,” says Gibboney.

During commencement, both mother and daughter proudly wore cords indicating their membership in the National Society of Leadership and Success, with Gibboney also being a member of the Tau Pi Phi business honor society.

Following their graduation, Gibboney is continuing in her current position and Ochs is applying to internships within the botanical field in hopes of launching a career at a botanical garden.

Those who have known Juniata for a long time, or are just getting to know us, understand how important community is to the College. It is as much a concept and attitude here as it is a place. This issue captures both of those ideas.

I have lived in Huntingdon for more than five years now (I know, I’m still new . . .) and say at every James A. Troha chance how important and how wonderful our town trohaj@juniata.edu is. It appears in this issue in many ways: students @juniataprztroha working with our health system, the local mom-anddaughter grads just to the left of this letter, a student film debuting in the Clifton 5 theatre in town, and the story about why our alumni love living in Huntingdon.

Dear Friends,

This issue honors the good work necessary to sustain a community.

Whether about our people traveling the globe to recruit students and build partnerships, the extraordinary work to build two of the strongest basketball teams in Juniata’s history, or an alumna helping a community revitalize itself, the stories here also talk about the concept and promise of community.

The bonds formed through work and this shared space unite all in the Juniata community. I suspect that is why the feature that always closes this magazine is so popular. Meeting a Juniata person out in the world is a reminder of all that is good in what we do and all that we share.

Enjoy this issue, and keep your eye out in your communities. If there is work to be done, don’t be surprised to find a Juniatian there.

While Juniata greatly appreciated the partnership it held with Sodexo for 26 years, it was time to evaluate the institution’s values relating to dining after so many years of collaboration with one vendor. In order to make this important decision, a committee of faculty, staff, and students reviewed proposals from four companies before reaching a decision to contract with Parkhurst Dining, an award-winning, family-operated company known for serving foods that are handcrafted and locally sourced, to manage its dining services and catering operations.

I’m Kirwin Seger, a junior from Brooklyn, New York, and I was selected to serve as the student representative on the committee.

I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to have a voice at the table because, ultimately, it is students who will predominantly be eating the food, and our administration at Juniata recognized that and acted on it.

Here are five factors I considered when helping to choose a food vendor for myself and my peers: 1.

Flexible Hours Parkhurst understands what it means to be a Juniata student, recognizing that every student has a different schedule with different times that they are able to eat. Because of this, they will keep dining halls open much later to meet the needs of students.

2. Inclusive & Unique Options

The need for an all-inclusive plan, which will allow students to visit the dining halls beyond the typical three meals a day and obtain snacks to sustain themselves throughout the day, was

part of the call for proposals. Not only will the meal plan be more inclusive, but the variety of options will increase. I am particularly excited for the diverse ready-to-go options.

Respecting Dietary Restrictions When making myself known as a student representative on the committee, my peers began to express their concerns and needs to me. Given the common trends of these students’ concerns, I am really excited about the new vegan and vegetarian line in Baker, which will be a staple now as opposed to a rotating line.

4. A Commitment to Education

Parkhurst presented a studentcentered approach in everything that they do. For example, Parkhurst plans

to hold “dorm crashes,” where they will come into dorm kitchens to teach students how to cook certain dishes.

Community Openness Baker Refectory is open to students as well as to the general public who may wish to eat on Juniata’s campus.

Individuals can purchase meals with cash or credit cards.

Throughout this process, I learned so much about the intricacies of dining services–some of the proposals were more than 200 pages. I learned that we cannot take for granted the food that we have.

While we will miss so much about Sodexo, I applaud the College for taking the time to put in so much work for something that is such an integral part of student life.

Presentations With Panache: Juniata Students Host Campus’s First TEDxJuniataCollege On April 29, a group of Juniata students hosted the College’s first TEDxJuniataCollege event, which featured eight speakers including professors, students, and a local community member.

The event was an overwhelming success as speakers, who were selected by a curation team of students to cover a wide variety of topics and disciplines, presented to a packed house.

“We wanted to build a forum where ideas could be exchanged freely and be supported by extensive research,” says Kien Le, a 2017 alumnus of Juniata who helped organize the event, which will be held annually henceforth.

Matthew Gaynor ’18, who recently graduated with a degree in integrated media arts and film production, had a busy senior year at Juniata. He wrote and directed a full-length film, A Small, Unimportant, and Beautiful Life or: (The Explanation of an Unexplained Journey Through the Multiverse), in 2016 and debuted it at the Clifton 5, in downtown Huntingdon, last December.

Gaynor was the first Juniata student to debut a feature film at the theater.

“I was surrounded by support at every step in the process, but some were hesitant,” Gaynor recalls. “They told me that there were too many moving parts, too much time needed on set, and that it couldn’t be done. But, because of the collection of brilliant people involved and my belief in this idea, we premiered my debut feature film.”

Some of Gaynor’s peers were his partners in producing and marketing his films.

“Matt’s a relentless worker and has had countless sleepless nights working on this film so that everyone could see it before he graduated,” says Hayden Snook ’18, who served as Gaynor’s producer. “I’m so proud of him.”

Snook earned credits from the College so that he could actively serve in this position.

Students from Juniata also starred as the main characters in the film, who encounter a parallel universe and must figure out the meaning of love, philosophy, and everyday life. Coleman Rigg ’15 provided the music for the film.

By May, Gaynor was prepared to premiere another work: a documentary called Find the Pennies, which also premiered at the Clifton 5.

Find the Pennies takes its viewers on an adventure through Mifflin County history, zeroing in on a century-old Pennsylvania legend about the great train robbery of 1909. Featuring first-hand accounts and interviews, the documentary tells the story of the robbery and the treasure that may have once laid in the mountains of the Lewistown Narrows.

“We really care about the town we made the documentary about, and it was so moving to hear the experiences of the local people who were involved,” says Gaynor.

Gaynor created the film for his senior honors thesis project. While he prefers working with fictional pieces, he branched

out to try a different genre once he became passionate about the story.

“I began my research by reading one article, and suddenly, I fell down a rabbit hole and learned what an amazing story it was,” Gaynor says. “Its story impacts so many generations of people.”

Gaynor himself even made an impact on the people of Mifflin County, donating proceeds of the documentary screening to the Mifflin County Railroad Fund.

He also left an impact on Dave Peoples, owner of the Clifton 5, who is looking forward to similar collaborations with the College in the future.

“I’m really glad these guys are doing this here because they could easily do it up on the Juniata College campus, but instead, they want to do it in a theater,” Peoples says. “I really like that.”

Galaxies and Trains and Robberies: Oh My! Juniata Student Premieres Films at Clifton 5

It’s a Small World After All In January 2018, Rob Yelnosky ’85, vice president for enrollment, and Ran Tu ’06, associate director of international recruitment, set off on a whirlwind adventure in Southeast Asia. They spent three weeks representing the College to prospective students in India, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Korea. The trip began as an opportunity for Juniata recruiters to attend the Next-Genius competition in India, which helps talented students identify and attend colleges in the U.S. But, as the duo’s trip unfolded, it became a tale of Juniata’s global reach.

Yelnosky and Tu began their trip in India, where they presented to NextGenius semi-finalists and their families, interviewed students in the program, and congratulated this year’s winner.

In addition to pausing to appreciate the Arabian Sea, Yelnosky was thrilled to meet students with interests like marine biology and art, for which the Program of Emphasis is ideal.

Throughout the trip, Yelnosky noted how many students with whom he and Tu met shared similar values to those held at Juniata, particularly around the importance of interdisciplinary education.

At the Branksome School in Seogwipo, South Korea, Yelnosky was touched when he took in a sight that reminded him of home: a pile of backpacks.

“I saw this and immediately thought of our students and how they trust each other with their personal belongings,” Yelnosky said of the pile, which was not

unlike another that sits in the lobby of Ellis Hall every day during mealtimes.

“I felt like I was back at our dining hall with all the backpacks laid out with no worries.”

Yelnosky and Tu were soon headed home, but not before one more chance encounter showed the global presence of the College.

“As I’m getting to my seat on my plane, leaving the Seoul airport in a Juniata sweatshirt, the gentleman in the seat in front of me asks how I know Juniata,” Yelnosky says. “It turns out he was from Huntingdon and was on his way home as well.”

From India, the traveling duo went on to Vietnam, eating at a restaurant Yelnosky’s daughter recommended from her recent visit. They also attended a concert at FPT University in Hanoi, Vietnam, featuring none other than the Juniata Concert Choir.

In Taiwan, Yelnosky and Tu were greeted at the airport by two current Juniata students—Ching “Daniel” Chen, a student studying abroad at Juniata, and Oscar Kuo ’20—who gave them a tour of Taipei before they participated in College Visit Week. In addition to informing Taiwanese prospective students about Juniata, the traveling enrollment counselors met with current University students who had visited Juniata’s campus

Paying it Forward: Alumnus Exemplifies Juniata’s Mission of Lifelong Service and Leadership at College’s 140th Commencement

Most commencement speakers share great advice. But, Maurice C. Taylor ’72, Ph.D., the speaker for Juniata’s 2018 commencement, didn’t stop there. Taylor paid it forward, literally. A vice president for academic outreach and engagement at Morgan State University, Taylor’s speech focused, from the perspective of an alumnus, on the lifelong pursuit of Juniata graduates “to chase our best selves.”

During his speech, Taylor announced that he would endowed a lectureship series on social justice to put his words into action.

The Dr. Maurice C. Taylor ’72 Lectureship on Social Justice will provide funding to support an annual public lecture on a topic related to social justice. The speaker, whose professional and/or personal life has contributed to an understanding of and/or progress in ameliorating an area of social justice, shall also engage with

the Juniata community of faculty, staff, students, and invitees.

Taylor’s speech—and gesture—spoke volumes to the 369 students who graduated from Juniata on May 19, 2018.

“We, the sons and daughters of Juniata College, are in a lifelong pursuit of our best selves,” Taylor said. “We are challenged to confront our blind spots. We are compelled to do great, small things in pursuit of justice, not because we are male or female, black or white, liberal or conservative, but because we graduated from Juniata College and it’s in our DNA.” Taylor’s words and deeds were also a great example of a public speaking tenet of the ages: know your audience. Like Taylor, the graduating class used their class gift to express that they, too, valued the importance of continued learning.

Nearly 75 percent of the Juniata Class of 2018 contributed close to $48,000 to its class gift, an experimental classroom in the new Learning Commons in the soonto-be renovated Beeghly Library. More than a space for lectures, the classroom will enable faculty to model different learning techniques and arrangements, encouraging students to collaborate on projects, pursue innovation, and challenge their conceptions. Characterized by its flexibility, the classroom will “spark a spirit of inquiry,” says Juniata Provost Lauren Bowen.

Doug ’89 and Sue Ellen Spotts donated an additional $75,000 to enhance the project.

From the commencement speaker, the class itself, and faculty, family, and friends in attendance, it was plain to see that Juniata’s 140th commencement was about working together to ensure each Juniata graduate steps forward in the best way possible, laying a foundation for future growth, which, it could be said, is the very purpose of graduation, and higher education, every day.

An All-Star Cast: Four Juniata Alumni Earn Awards As part of its 2018 Alumni Weekend festivities, Juniata College presented four awards to distinguished alumni on June 9, 2018.

We’re proud of their accomplishments and wanted to share how they felt Juniata has played a role in their success.

Alumni Achievement Award

Dr. Barry B. Moore ’63 Dr. Moore attended Temple University School of Medicine, completed a surgical internship at the Cincinnati General Hospital, and fulfilled his residency in neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Throughout his career of more than 40 years, Dr. Moore has been employed by Harrisburg Hospital, Holy Spirit Hospital, Carlisle Hospital, and the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He was chairman of the departments of neurosurgery at two of those organizations and also served as president of the medical staff at Holy Spirit.

He recently retired from practicing neurosurgery at PinnacleHealth Neurosurgery and Neuroscience Institute, where he specialized in brain surgeries and spine surgery. During this time, he also provided coverage for neurosurgical emergencies at the Harrisburg Hospital Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. He is a member of numerous medical societies and is also a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

“Since I left Juniata 55 years ago, there have been a lot of physical changes on campus—a lot of new buildings and facilities.

However, the one thing that never changes at Juniata is the way in which they prepare their students for not only their chosen profession in life, but for life’s challenges after graduation.”

Young Alumni Achievement Award

Dr. Carl A. Kihm ’05

Dr. Kihm earned his doctorate at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, completed a residency at DeKalb Medical Center, and went into private practice with Village Podiatry Group in Atlanta, Georgia. He is now an associate at University Foot & Ankle in Louisville, Kentucky, and a faculty member at The Podiatry Institute in Decatur, Georgia. He is also a fellow at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, is a diplomat at the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and holds podiatry certifications in Kentucky, Indiana, and Georgia. Dr. Kihm has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, and has lectured at professional conferences across the U.S. and in Sydney, Australia.

Since 2011, Dr. Kihm has traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal, to operate on patients by flashlight, teach and collaborate with Nepalese doctors, and procure donations for the hospital. After a 2015 earthquake killed more than 8,000 people in Nepal, Dr. Kihm worked with MedShare to send 1,000 boxes of medical supplies to Nepal. For this work, he was awarded MedShare’s Community Hero Award. In 2016, he was featured for “Healing the Children in Nepal” on NBC’s The Doctors. In 2017 and 2018, Kihm traveled to San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala, where he performed approximately 30 surgeries in five days. He continues to bring his leadership not only through service but also by working as attending surgeon for residents of Norton Healthcare’s Kentucky Podiatric Residency Program in Louisville, Kentucky.

Jean (Davies) Ewers ’61

Ewers was presented with the award for her work as a leader of the Honduras Hope Mission, which travels to Honduras annually to care for the 30 poorest families in the La Villa community. Ewers traveled to Honduras several years, helping the Mission distribute 1,500 packets of parasite medicine, 242 water filters, 200 Bibles, 130 pairs of shoes, 100 mosquito nets, 50 pairs of reading glasses, and two large cases of medications.

Within this mission, Ewers helped establish and coordinate the HOPE family program, which supports and empowers Honduran families. In addition to fundraising in the U.S., Ewers worked directly with families in Honduras to identify their greatest needs and address those challenges to move families toward independence. She helped families obtain and care for school uniforms, gain access to clean water, and worked to empower women to start small businesses offering food, sewing, or cosmetology. Many HOPE families were young single mothers who did not know one another, so Ewers brought them together for meals, worship, and training in medical and life skills, creating a caring and supportive community that lasts long after a family graduates from the HOPE program. Although she no longer travels to Honduras, Ewers continues as a board member for the mission, in addition to shepherding a Ugandan family and serving as a Stephen Ministry leader.

Harold B. Brumbaugh ’33 Alumni Service Award

David G. Oliver ’63

Oliver began his service to Juniata immediately after graduating, when he began attending regional alumni events near his home in New Jersey. Since that time, he has been a regular face at oncampus events like Alumni Weekend and Homecoming and Family Weekend, where he continues to serve as a long-time member of the Class of 1963’s reunion committee. Oliver is renowned among his classmates for maintaining the close bonds of his class by writing newsletters, emails, and letters.

A captain of the football team while he attended Juniata, Oliver has carried his commitment to athletics into lifelong fandom, and is a supporter of not only Juniata’s football team, but athletics at large as well. He and his wife, Marion (Kercher) Oliver ’64, were charter members of the College’s J-Club athletics fund. In addition to serving on Alumni Council, to which he was elected President, Oliver also lent his leadership to various fundraising efforts. From the Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center to Founders Hall and Winton Hill Athletics Complex, Oliver has had a positive influence on philanthropy in nearly every corner of Juniata’s campus. He has served as a Class Fund Agent, often helping to inspire more than 50 percent of his classmates to give to Juniata, and chaired his class’s 50th reunion, which raised a then-record $1.4 million to establish scholarships for first-generation students attending the College.

Oliver has also helped secure the future of Juniata and build its community by recruiting students. He has represented Juniata at high school college fairs and by recruiting students through the Juniata Community Scholarship program. Together with his wife, Oliver is leaving a legacy gift to the music program at Juniata.

The 2018 Faculty Awards

Every spring, three Juniata faculty members are honored with distinguished teaching and service awards during the College’s Spring Awards Convocation.

John Bukowski, professor of mathematics, was honored with the 51st annual Beachley Award for Distinguished Teaching. Described by President James A. Troha as “an unassuming and very effective teacher whose insights and practices also inform a strong cadre of colleagues in his department,” Bukowski is active in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). He currently serves as the historian of the Allegheny Mountain Section of the MAA, and served previously as its Governor from 2005-08, also serving on the national Board of Governors. He is a member of American Mathematical Society and the Association for Women in Mathematics.

Bukowski researches the history of 17th and 18th century mathematics, especially the work of the Dutch mathematician, Christiaan Huygens. In 2012,

Bukowski spent a semester in-residence at the University of Leiden, Netherlands, and has taught during the summer at ISEN in Lille, France, since 2013.

Cynthia Merriwether-de Vries, associate professor of sociology, was named the 29th recipient of the Beachley Award for Distinguished Academic Service. For more than a decade, Merriwether-de Vries has served as an adviser to student clubs, including Umoja, a club focused on African American culture and advocacy, and PLEXUS, a peer-to-peer mentoring program for first-generation college students and students from underrepresented populations.

In 2015, Merriwether-de Vries helped to co-administer Juniata’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion as the College conducted a two-year search for a Dean of Institutional Equity and Inclusive Excellence. In 2001, Merriwether-de Vries worked as a research associate

Daniel Dries, assistant professor of chemistry, received the Henry and Joan Gibbel Award for Distinguished Teaching, an award reserved for faculty members with fewer than six years of service. Dries is an innovative proponent of inclusive pedagogy, a term that describes a student-centered

approach to teaching that accounts for the breadth of perspectives one may engage in any learning situation.

Dries maintains an active lab studying both the biochemistry and the physiological role of the gamma-secretase complex in the brain, research relevant to Alzheimer’s as well as brain development more generally.

Dries has successfully applied for research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and other sources to support his work and that of students. Dries also has helped to restructure the biochemistry curriculum, organized a new chapter of the American Society of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Juniata, and arranged for Juniata students to earn summer research positions at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

“The award recognizes Dr. Dries as an innovative and inclusive teacher, no matter what the class or subject,” says Troha.

The World’s Gonna Know Your Name: Five Inducted Into Juniata’s Hall of Fame On April 14, the College celebrated its 2018 Sports Hall of Fame induction, honoring the achievements of five Juniata athletes.

Juniata (2004 and 2006).

She was an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) first team All-American for three years, one of only eight players to do that in program history. She was the AVCA National Player of the Year in 2006 and was the AVCA Regional Freshman of the Year. She also was the MiddleAtlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth Player of the Year twice. She was awarded the Charles Bargerstock Award, which is presented to the graduating female who made the greatest contribution to athletics.

Stephanie Kines ’07 Kines had a distinguished four-year career as a key member of the Juniata women’s volleyball team and won two National Championships while at

Katie (Laucks) Ruesgen ’06 Ruesgen started all four years in her time on the women’s volleyball team and was a member of the 2004 National Championship team. She was an AVCA

first team AllAmerican three straight years, a threetime AVCA all-region selection, and a four-time MAC All-Star selection.

Nikki (McLellan) Ayers ’06 Ayers is the most decorated women’s soccer player in the history of the program.

She started all four years and was the first women’s soccer player to be named a MAC AllConference selection all four years. She is the program leader in goals scored with 32, assists with 25, and total points with 89.

She was also awarded the Bargerstock Award.

Kim (Wagner) Hilling ’08 Hilling was a two-sport athlete in her time at Juniata. She spent four years as a standout field hockey player and one year on the softball team.

She was a part of the team that advanced to the Elite Eight and won the inaugural Landmark Conference Championship in 2007. In her first year, she was named MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year as the team went to their first NCAA Tournament. She’s a two-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-American, was the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year, and the Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year. She, too, was awarded the Bargerstock Award.

Tom Gibboney ’78 Gibboney was a two-sport athlete at Juniata. He played tight end and split end for the football team while playing in the outfield for the baseball team. He led the football team in receiving yards and scoring in 1977. In his final year on the baseball team, he led the team in stolen bases as the team made its way to the NCAA Regional round. Tom was awarded the Stanford Mickle Award, which is presented to the graduating male who contributed the most to athletics.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

he morning had all the makings of a napinducing drone show. The tables at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital education center formed

a rectangle to seat roughly 40 people at seven in

the morning. Outside, the cloud cover released a dispiriting drizzle and the coffee urns offered a meager bulwark against fatigue.

But, by the end of the 45-minute presentation on

health resources in Huntingdon, provided by seven of the 14 Juniata students in attendance, the room buzzed with chatter. Adam Dimm, chief executive officer of J.C. Blair Health System, Inc., announced:

Dr. Lauren Hughes, Pennsylvania’s Deputy Secretary for Health Innovation, also praised the students’ work. One of their instructors for the health communication practicum, Dr. Robert Gillio, a pulmonologist who serves as medical director for population health and clinical innovation with the health system, said, “I’d be proud to take these students anywhere.”

The students’ presentation inspired accolades not simply because of the deceptively simple idea they explained.

Students described work underway to make wellness more readily attainable for people in Huntingdon County and provided an insight into potential gains for rural health. Their work had influenced several community initiatives and their understanding of challenges and creativity provided a window into what is possible.

For the last few years, Juniata has increased the ways students can learn through engaged community action.

“Engaged” is key; this is not simply volunteering for an afternoon to clean cages at a pet shelter or gather trash from a riverbank.

“Community-engaged learning” prioritizes substantial connections between the experiences and students’ academic work. Such learning requires students not only to lean on what they know but to use their knowledge in unexpected ways. Their faculty prioritize some element of reflection.

Do students write about how their learning is affected? Do they consider challenges in what they learn and how it can be applied?

Do they encounter the difficulties of uncertain environments and learn how to prevail? What do they learn about genuine collaboration with community partners?

FFH is a nonprofit focused on empowering people and organizations to influence healthy decision making. The organization believes empowered groups can improve the social determinants of health. Those determinants include access to healthcare, knowledge of wellness behaviors, discrimination, and living environments across the community, to name a few. FFH partners with companies, communities, and people to share resources and collaborate to advance a culture of wellness.

FFH started in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, when volunteers helped rebuild health education resources and healthcare in the community. Led by teenagers and young adults who took charge of helping their families and peers make healthy decisions, the program showed the power of social organization to motivate communities to embrace healthier behaviors.

Given FFH’s aim to engage the community—grade school students, community organizations, religious organizations, civic groups, and others—it made perfect sense to align with a health communications course at Juniata.

Added as a designated Program of Emphasis (POE) at Juniata in 2011, health communication has attracted student interest steadily since, particularly as issues in population health have demanded more people skilled in communication.

Given the College’s strengths in health care preparation and medical research, the health communications POE complements established strengths.

Gillio and Christine Gildea, director of marketing and public relations for J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, sought community partners to activate FFH programming in the area. Gillio and Gildea approached Juniata in fall 2017 about the possibility for the class. After President James Troha and Provost Lauren Bowen green-lighted the venture, the class was offered for spring 2018. Fourteen students enrolled.

Gildea and Gillio noted that community feedback constantly evolved their work, and, as such, the class changed shape in many ways from how they envisioned it at its beginning. Juniata students remained flexible, knowing their work with FFH is not unlike that which they’ll encounter in their lives after Juniata.

Aisha Nelson ’18, a public health communication POE from Brooklyn, New York, recalls the same public meeting. “Until that moment, I thought I wanted to work in health care administration,” she says.

“That moment changed my mind.”

Now, she wants to have a more direct impact.

Nelson worked on the academy team, producing 10 course modules with videos. Videos covered subjects from diabetes to prenatal care to opioid addiction. In the end, the team made more than 30 videos for the project.

Each of the three teams cooperated with different community organizations. The clubs team partnered with a teacher at Huntingdon Area High School to help students develop clubs focused on wellness.

During the semester, a tragedy hit the high school when a local student took his own life. Understandably, high school students wanted to focus their FFH club on mental wellness and bullying prevention rather than their original topic. The team adjusted.

The academy team also worked with the South Central Pennsylvania Tobacco-Free Coalition to develop educational content, but again had to be flexible and adapt to changing client timelines.

As the team completed modules, and the projects coalesced, clients expressed enthusiasm for the work. The group heard results.

Gildea and Gillio shared news of their impact.

Kyle Bargo ’18 of Reedsville, Pennsylvania, took the class to prepare for a job he had in-hand. An information technology POE who has also declared a secondary emphasis in marketing and management and played as a defensive lineman for the Eagles, Bargo had taken an internship with UPMC during the summer before his senior year. The internship was competitive; successful candidates could interview for a position with the company at the end of the summer and Bargo prevailed.

With a job waiting for him in the healthcare industry, Bargo thought it would be a good idea to gain additional experience.

The class broke into three teams. The portal team created a website with health, prevention, and wellness resources. The academy team produced and edited educational content for the portal. The clubs team helped empower organizations to be forces for health throughout the county. For all of this, they had 15 weeks. Bargo’s role was to create the online platform and app through which people would access resources.

After the first class and having learned the extent of the project, facing the last semester of his senior year and a variety of commitments, Bargo nearly dropped the course. But then he attended a town hall in January with his classmates. People from around the county gathered at the hospital.

Axel Jessin ’18, a managerial health sciences POE from Austin, Texas, was connected to the class due to his internship with the FFH Foundation board, serving as administrative director for interns. Charged with handling some of the administrative, accounting, and legal duties necessary to establish an FFH organization in Huntingdon, he gained valuable insight about mobilizing volunteers.

Another benefit, for him, was more surprising.

“It was the first time I strongly associated with the Huntingdon community,” he says. “Other things I’ve seen had died out, or they were limited. This effort has a much greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities in this area.”

Jessin helped organize community meetings that attracted more than 800 people over the course of the year. Like Bargo, he learned from hearing people’s stories, realizing how mobilizing others can be so effective. Given his academic work in examining health management and health care issues, he found the community engagement illuminating.

“A lot of health care nonprofits usually throw money around to figure out the size of problems,” he says. “We heard people crying, who had lost young people to opioids, or who knew people who had gone bankrupt. We know there are problems. We can figure out how big they are, but we also have to help people to do something now. This work helps do that.”

Their answers to questions revealed how much they learned in the semester about the pace and unpredictability of public engagement while illuminating the thorny complexities of health issues.

My family and I were looking for an older home with character and history that needed someone to take care of it. We ended up in a house built by Richard Langdon, a Bedford coal mine operator who moved to Huntingdon in the early 1870s.

There are a lot of homes in the area like this, mostly concentrated in Huntingdon Borough, and particularly in the historic section of downtown. And it isn’t just the homes, but other historic buildings, churches, fences, walls, gardens, and trees. There is a curved brick wall on 7th and Moore that I love to walk past. They have redbud trees along it which yield wild purple color in early spring.

Though I am originally from a big city, my fellow Huntingdon citizens have made me feel like I belong, which is the biggest reason I came back for good. Far too often, I hear stories about people who make a move to another town and are made to feel like outsiders.

I have had exactly the opposite experience in Huntingdon. In fact, it is hard for me to believe I wasn’t born and raised here.

I enjoy the nonprofit organizations that make our area great, from the Huntingdon Community Center, Huntingdon County PRIDE, and the Humane Society to the volunteer fire and EMS companies. I also love the clear view of the night sky we can enjoy.

I wasn’t ready to be dropped off in what I then felt was “the middle of nowhere.” But I’ve come to realize that Huntingdon is truly in the middle of so much—I enjoy hiking local trails, taking my family to Raystown Lake, and kayaking the Juniata River. Here, I have met many like-minded people and many people who are very different from me. Now, I’m home.

Walk This Way In Huntingdon it is so easy and convenient to get to local shops, churches, eateries, the movie theater, grocery stores, and farmers market because they are all within walking distance. My favorite memory (so far) of living in Huntingdon is walking out my front door on a Saturday morning and strolling towards downtown, grabbing a coffee at Standing Stone Coffee Company, while sharing greetings with friends and strangers along the way. Everyone is so friendly, inevitably you end up in a conversation with someone you had not met before, and end up making a new connection. To me, Huntingdon is a quiet, love ly, and quirky place to call home. I love it for all the textures in the alleys, the end less nearby creeks and woo ds, and the intimacy that exists betw een everyone. A Season for the History Books: Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Complete Record-breaking Seasons

emorial Gym in the Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center is novel in that most fans enter the gym at the mezzanine and descend to their seats in the bleachers. Overlooking the amber gloss of the wooden floor and taking a seat in a space almost nest-like, fans enjoy a distinctive atmosphere.

Juniata basketball guard Seth Brewer ’18 says, “I always liked our gym the best because the old-style atmosphere mixes with the unique way to enter the bleachers from up top. It’s a cool basketball gym.”

Last season, it was particularly cool and often hot, loud, and animated in what would become a season for the Juniata record books.

A Season for the History Books

Before the tipoff of their 2017-18 seasons, Juniata’s men’s and women’s basketball teams were picked fifth in the Landmark Conference pre-season poll.

The women’s squad had suffered through three consecutive difficult seasons. The men’s team had lost key contributors from the previous season who had helped the team to reach two Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason appearances the prior two seasons. Despite the odds stacked against them, each team had high aspirations.

“We had more freshman than upperclassmen so I felt as though we would be too inexperienced,” says men’s basketball player Damon Rickens ’18, a forward from Altoona, Pennsylvania. “However, I still thought we had the chance to be special.”

Damon wasn’t alone in seeing the potential in his teammates—the women also thought they could surpass expectation.

history, rose to #17 in national rankings, and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The men’s team competed in the Landmark Conference Championship game and earned their first-ever national ranking (coming in at #23) via D3hoops. com. By the end of the year, and because of the ownership each player had in their collective efforts, each team would have one of the best seasons in their program’s history. Combined, they earned a record 27 victories in the “friendly” confines of Memorial Gymnasium.

Historic Beginnings

“Our coaches had high expectations for us and we had high expectations for each other,” says Rachael Anstine ’18, a forward from York, Pennsylvania. “So, we pushed each other harder during fall workouts and tried to build solid relationships with each other heading into the season.”

In fall 2017, both teams opened their seasons with unprecedented winning streaks. The men’s team was victorious in their first 12 games, including wins in the Doc Greene Tournament against a tough Randolph-Macon team and a blowout win over University of Scranton, who was selected to finish first in the Conference, according to the preseason poll.

“The win over Randolph-Macon and the win over University of Scranton showed we could be a good team,” says Greg Curley, head men’s basketball coach and athletic director at Juniata. “We had a bunch of big wins already but those two wins helped validate that we were going to be tough to beat.”

But the team hit a wall in January as they dropped three of four games. Suddenly,

“I was nervous for my performance because of coming off an injury, but I was very excited for this team because I knew we had a great group,” says women’s basketball standout Bethany Spencer ’18, a guard from York, Pennsylvania. “I wanted to finish on a high note with my fellow seniors because we had three challenging years prior.”

That relationship building paid off—not only for Anstine and the women’s team, but for the men’s team as well. Many junior and senior players forged a closeness from early adversity, including the jarring moment when one of their own, Shaquille Smith, became critically ill in 2015 and recovered in the midst of a tough season.

Will Peralta ’18 remembers the “Shaq the House Night” as the win that meant the most to him prior to this season. “For Shaq the House night, we crowded the gym for my friend Shaq. He was in the hospital and we won.” The game marked the first time Smith returned to campus since becoming ill.

“We felt like solutions to our issues were difficult to find,” said Rickens. But, when the players didn’t see it in themselves, their coach stepped in. “Coach made us realize that it was up to us what we wanted with our season.”

Scranton, which helped them return to the D3hoops.com national poll for the first time since 2014 and rise as high as #17. Heading into the new year with a perfect record, the team earned some tough wins before they, too, hit a wall.

“Losing to Elizabethtown, then Scranton, and then to Moravian, all on the road, was rough,” says Spencer. “It didn’t make sense how we could be so good but then lose so badly as well.”

Like the men’s team, the women found a solution that was very much in keeping with Juniata’s values—they took ownership of their season.

“Our team and coaches regrouped and talked about ‘why we play’ and discussed our investment in the team,” Spencer says.

Coach Danny Young-Uhrich ’00 put together a scouting report on her own team to show them what they had accomplished so far and what they needed to do to finish the season strong.

Conversations about why students invest their time in athletics may sound small, but like many opportunities at Juniata—from leading student organizations or excelling in tough courses—the partnership between and amongst students and coaches made a difference.

What Made the Difference?

Anyone who has cracked the cover of Sports Illustrated can tell you that championship culture plays an immense role in winning. At Juniata, the community built by the men’s and women’s basketball teams (and their coaches) also played a critical role in this season’s success.

“All of the adversity that we faced in the previous three seasons fueled us to be successful our senior year,” says Myers.

“We knew we wanted to go out differently and leave a lasting, positive impression for the program.”

Myers and her teammates partnered with each other for historic success. And each understood that that partnership, which is so endemic to the culture of Juniata, is part of a legacy which will outlive their time at the College.

“We always credit the players and coaches that came before us,” Rickens says. “There were multiple opportunities for past teams to be ranked and it never happened for them. Without past Juniata teams providing stepping stones for our success, we wouldn’t have achieved that ranking. This season was full of great moments for the entire basketball program, past, and present.” >J<

Gymnasium, the men hosted Catholic, and the women hosted Elizabethtown. Both teams advanced, with men hosting Moravian for the Conference Championship game and women traveling to Scranton to compete for the title.

Both teams endured tough defeats in their conference championships, the men losing by three points and the women’s team falling in overtime. But, their efforts had earned the opportunity to continue playing in the postseason.

The men’s team made their eighth trip to the ECAC tournament and were the number one overall seed. They hosted the first-round game against Arcadia University and held on late to earn the victory. They then faced a talented Neumann University team, who won the game and advanced to the ECAC final. The men finished their bestever year with a record of 23 wins and six losses.

The women earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament, their fourth appearance in the national tournament. A tenacious first half of defense saw Juniata only allow their opponent 16 points as they locked down Piedmont and went on to win 63-52. Haley Myers ’18, a guard from Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, spoke about what the team was thinking heading into their first NCAA game. “We knew it was now or never. If you lose, you go home and the season is over, and none of us wanted the season to be over just yet.”

was drawn to me because I knew the Latin names of the trees we were looking at. It’s a lesson that knowing scientific names of species is handier than you can imagine,” Norris says.

After commencement, Norris enrolled in a doctorate program, as did Allyson.

“I liked sharing and being in a group with people who are likeminded enough to be interested in the same questions,” Norris recalls. “We would throw ideas around and engage. We’d dissect topics and put them back together. Those things are really motivational to me.”

Allyson finished her dissertation before Norris and moved to State College for a job at Penn State University. Shortly after, Norris completed his doctorate in ecology and evolution from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He went on to complete post-doctoral work at Muhlenberg University in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The duo weathered the long distance travel.

“We could see the forest through the trees; we knew we were working toward the same goal,” he says.

One day, Norris saw the job opening at Juniata. He knew it would allow him to be living with his wife in the rural

environment they both desired. And, working at the College would enable him to continue his research in a place devoted to undergraduate research and other hands-on learning opportunities. Norris joined the Juniata community in 2007.

“My interactions here are very different than any place I’ve been— people get along and are outright nice,” Norris says.

That comradery is the spirit of Juniata and is present in the research he and other professors execute. One such collaboration was a project about the ecosystem. Norris and Chris Grant, associate professor of biological research, joined forces to research Hemlock trees.

Those abundant trees, which are found along many streams, were dying. The duo and their students began an analysis to discover how the demise of those trees will impact the fish living in nearby streams. But, at Juniata, partnerships aren’t only for faculty.

“I’m most passionate about the interactions with the students and the faculty,” he said. “Those interactions give purpose, vitality, and meaningfulness to being here.”

Norris’ presence at Juniata also gives him the opportunity to return to his advocacy roots. He is a faithful supporter of the community, working with the Huntingdon Tree Commission. And he serves with the Mid-Atlantic Invasive Plant Council, where he helps to try to understand and manage invasive plants.

Norris has hosted the council’s conference twice at Juniata and has brought the Pennsylvania Rare Plant Forum to campus as well.

Norris, Allyson, and their daughter, Grace, have found their home among the rolling hills and fertile lands in Pennsylvania. It took him awhile to get here, but he is content and feels fortunate to be able to do work he revels in, helping others achieve their goals, in this quiet and powerful place.

“I want to be able to help us understand how our interactions with each other and with the natural world influence it and shape it,” Norris says. “It’s about as important a thing as you could hope to do. I try to understand it and help people understand how their interactions with each other shape what’s left behind.” >J< —Amanda Drumm is a freelance writer and marketing director from Altoona, Pennsylvania.

The only neighbors at the boyhood home of Norris Muth, associate professor of biology, were the apple trees that encompassed his family’s orchard in western New York state. Green vegetation surrounded Norris for miles. He spent much of his adolescence outside playing in the plush grass and discovering the plants around him. He did not know then that this love for nature would shape his career and his winding path to Juniata.

When Norris entered college at Brown University, he began his undergraduate year interested in international relations. He had spent a summer during high school working for a refugee advocacy group in Washington, D.C., and also volunteered at a refugee camp in Nepal.

“I was interested in advocacy and human rights and thought anthropology and public policy would be a good way to further my interests,” he says.

But the outdoors were always beckoning Norris, who spent time searching for summer jobs in national parks. He worked at several parks, including Acadia in Bar Harbor, Maine, where he enjoyed talking about the outdoors.

“It took me a couple of years to realize doing outdoor things is what I really like to do,” Norris says. So, he shifted his major to environmental studies. “I took biology and combined it with public policy to study conservation issues.”

Soon, Norris began thinking about what he was going to do after he graduated.

“I knew it would be useful to think about being outdoors as an occupation, not just a hobby,” he says. He recognized the need to incorporate research and not focus solely on policy advocacy. A helpful adviser suggested he further his education by enrolling in a master’s curriculum. And, Norris was accepted into the Yale School of Forestry program.

“I wasn’t thinking about research, but it made a lot of sense to get into it. I started doing more research and really liked what I did,” he says.

Norris delved into his investigations.

He appreciated every aspect—reading, analyzing, even prepping and collecting data. A healthy portion of his exploration enabled him to be outside, which is still at the core of what Norris enjoys doing most.

While studying at Yale, Norris met his wife, Allyson, who was also in the forestry program. “She likes to say that she

With Kim Roth, professor of mathematics, she published “Bacterial Community Dynamics in Dichloromethanecontaminated Groundwater Undergoing Natural Attenuation” in Frontiers in Microbiology. Lamendella also helped Juniata secure its first Pennsylvania Sea grant, which will help Juniata, Gettysburg College, and the United States Department of Agriculture track the sources of pathogens like salmonella in Pennsylvania waterways.

Doug Glazier, professor of biology, recently published three scientific articles in the journals Challenges, Systems, and Trends in Ecology & Evolution on how and why the pace of life (as estimated by metabolic rate) relates to the size of organisms. His research synthesizes several new and old observations and theories to help answer the age-old biological question of why small organisms usually live shorter lives than large organisms.

Chris Grant, assistant professor of biological research, published a paper entitled “Latitudinal Variation in the Geometric Morphology of the Largemouth Bass, Micropterus salmoides” in the Marine and Freshwater Research journal with Elijah Hall ’18 and Ben Martin ’18.

Jim Latten, professor of music, presented a seminar to the music education majors at Mansfield University, his undergraduate alma mater, titled “Things I Wish I had Known When I Started My Career in the 1980s” in December 2017. In January 2018, he served as guest conductor of the Bedford County Senior High All-County Band, held at Tussey Mountain High School.

Monika Malewska, professor of art, had her watercolor painting, “Tree of Life with Octopi and Tulips,” published in the winter-spring 2018 issue of The Critical Pass Review, a literary review of poetry, fiction, and visual art.

John Unger, associate professor of chemistry, completed a term as a member of the committee that produced the 2018 organic chemistry exam for the American Chemical Society.

Apollo Weaver, instructor of theatre, designed the sets for two shows that opened in Philadelphia: The Gap with Azuka Theatre and The Brownings with Orbiter 3.

Polly Walker, director of the Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies and associate professor of peace and conflict studies, had her research cited in the annual report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Emil Nagengast, professor of politics and international studies, recently published “An Assessment of Learning Outcomes in Short-term Study Abroad and Human Rights Education” in International Research and Review, the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars.

Roy Nagle, instructor of environmental science and studies and director of environmental health and safety, published “Abnormal Shell Shapes in Northern Map Turtles of the Juniata River, Pennsylvania, USA” in the Journal of Herpetology, along with co-authors Chris Grant, Emma Sebastian ’18, and Ben Martin ’18. Taking Care of Businesses Alumna Uses Teaching Degree to Energize Downtown Bedford

It’s Friday afternoon. You’re struggling to get through the work week. You check your watch, count down the minutes, and impatiently wait for the weekend. This might be commonplace for most–but it’s not typical for Tonya (McClucas) Grimes ’90.

Throughout the week, Tonya is employed full-time as Main Street Manager of Bedford, Pennsylvania, where she has been instrumental in revitalizing the community for five years. When the weekend arrives, Tonya doesn’t kick back; instead, she heads home to focus on the corporation she’s built, Dynamic Performance Institute, Inc. Educating and motivating others is no unfamiliar skill to Tonya, which is among the many reasons why she was drawn to the Juniata campus years ago, as a prospective student interested in education.

“Juniata was one of the very few colleges that immersed you in a classroom experience from your very first year,” Tonya recalls.

“And I also found that they allowed you to be more creative and step out to take risks. They encouraged us to stretch ourselves beyond what might be considered the norm.”

Throughout her four years on campus, Tonya took advantage of everything she could, including earning a dual teaching certificate. Her mentor, Fay Glosenger, professor emerita of early childhood education, advised that this achievement would make her more competitive. As a result, Tonya received a job offer straight out of college–out of 200 applicants–and was even recognized as one of Sallie Mae’s Top 100 Teachers in the country during her first year of teaching.

As a business owner and Main Street Manager in Bedford, Pa., Tonya Grimes ’90 works to improve the place she loves most, which also happens to be the place where she lives, shops, and dines.

“Juniata taught me to have discipline and commitment in whatever I’m doing,” Tonya says. “Everyone has talent, but the key is taking opportunities and advice to heart and applying them.”

After starting a family years later, Tonya’s journey took a turn, and though she transitioned out of the education field, she never truly stopped teaching, whether that meant teaching others or herself. Tonya’s new venture began when she heard a radio broadcast from a company that teaches its customers how to best preserve photographs for future generations. Soon, she was hosting groups of 50 women in her home to teach them how to do this very process.

When Tonya started this venture, the company did not provide her with any sales training or resources. So, she did what she does best—she saw a teaching opportunity. Tonya taught herself the ins and outs of sales, leadership development, and marketing. She created her own system from scratch, and companies started to recognize her success. So, they asked if she would teach them her methodology.

“I shared for free for a while, but when I realized that this was my system and I developed it all on my own, I knew I had my hands on another business,” says Tonya. “So, on the side, I wrote books, made DVDs, facilitated phone trainings, created e-courses, and copyrighted all my materials, so that if anyone was interested in learning, my resources were available. That is essentially how my business morphed into what it is now.”

As Tonya continued to build her business, the position of Main Street Manager of Bedford was advertised in newspapers.

While reading the job description, she realized she did not know everything there was to know about being a main street manager, but she knew her teaching and leadership skills from Juniata and the career it helped her build would enable her to flourish.

While wearing her Main Street Manager hat, Tonya makes a positive impact on the realms of economic development and historic preservation in the town of Bedford. To help improve the quality of life for the people living in and around the town, Tonya hosts and markets concerts, cooking competitions, and family events. During her five short years of serving in this role, Bedford was recognized by the National Main Street Center as one of the top 10 main streets in the nation, beating out big cities like Atlanta, Georgia.

Other Main Street Manager duties include managing a board of 20 people, developing and maintaining a solid volunteer base, facilitating community events, and playing different roles on committees, but she doesn’t feel overwhelmed.

“It’s not difficult for me to balance my work because I love it,” Tonya says. “When I jump out of bed every morning I think, ‘How can I add value to someone’s day? How can I add value to my town and my community?’ That started when Juniata taught me to stretch. Now I know that whenever you’re willing to step out and make yourself vulnerable to teach people, you get to see what and how people learned from that—that’s what motivates me, and everything else falls into place.” >J<

While Grimes has served as a leader in downtown Bedford, it has been honored as one of the top main streets in the nation for its concerts and festivals, which often feature impersonators. Grimes is proud of her flexibility and the challenge to continue to grown and learn. It could even be said that, in Bedford, Pa., “You never know what you’re gonna get.”

retired after serving for almost four decades as the head football coach and athletic director at Bellwood-Antis High School in Bellwood, Pa. In his 38 seasons coaching football, his teams compiled 323 wins, six undefeated seasons, 19 conference championships, and three trips to the state championship tournament. Q: What drove your interest in studying constitutionalism?

A: In Europe, we study in pre-defined programs. So, studying at Juniata was beneficial because I could pick courses of my choosing, which facilitated the orientation of my thoughts and intellectual interests. My interests focused on the understanding of the sources of political and economic power in society. At Juniata, I took a variety of courses pertaining to law, and they allowed me to discover intellectual linkages between disciplines, which increased my interests in constitutional law.

Q: Is your research on constitutionalism in the Arab Spring still in progress?

A: Research is an everlasting journey. The closer you think you are to finishing, the farther you are from reaching your destination. It’s ongoing. I have learned a lot thus far, though, considering I was a bit new to Arab legal systems. I have found that Arab legal systems, relating to public law, are quite like any other constitutional system or political system ruled by a constitution.

Q: Besides your passion for educating, why did you choose to return to campus?

A: I felt happy at Juniata, so I wanted to revisit those beautiful memories and see everything that made me feel that way: the trees, the town, the cliffs, and the trains, which some may overlook. The Juniata experience is unique, maybe because you are immersed in this tranquil context without excessive contamination from the outside society, so to speak.

For me, Juniata is like a light. When you’re walking through darkness, you need a light to illuminate your path. That’s what Juniata did and still does for me—I remember the memories of my experience and my current and future life shines as a result.

Lim has made several adva ncements over the years: he introduced coronary cine angi ography to the Harrisburg Hospital, procured multimil lion-dollar bedside monitori ng equipment, created curriculum for boar d examinations, and advocated for various orga nizations like Doctors Wit hout Borders and UNICEF. Because of his dedication to teaching and healing, Lim was recognized as one of America’ s “Best in Medicine” by the American Health Council in January 2018.

Q: Your methodology includes “five Es.” Why are they important to you?

A: Enquiring, Examining, Exploring, Educating, and Empowering. Not only do these help prepare fellows in cardiology to take their board examinations, but it helps them to become more compassionate and more thorough physicians in interviewing and examining patients. It’s fulfilling and satisfying when they become better physicians through this methodology.

Q: You’ve had a long career in heathcare. What have been your biggest struggles along the way?

A: Honestly, I have not encountered many significant struggles. Studying chemistry and biology at Juniata was the hardest struggle of all; I spent most of my nights and weekends in the lab trying to keep up with the heavy course load from my professors. Because I persisted through the program, I was more prepared for my future education, internships, and residency.

Q: Your list of accomplishments and accolades is inspiring, but why do you think you won the award?

A: I believe that my award stems from my commitment to the American Health Council’s five pillars: advocacy, betterment, congregation, development, and education. I fulfill these by practicing medicine, helping hospitals to develop advanced technologies, and continuing to teach and research. Additionally, I am in the process of advocating for the relief of medical students’ educational loans and for free care for veterans in need. I am very honored and humbled by the Council’s recognition.

Obituaries Gerald L. Barker ’39

March 21, 2018—Jerry began his professional career as a music teacher, and then enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he became a military flight instructor. Later in life, Jerry founded the Keystone Milling Company in Williamsburg, Pa., and J.B. Tree Farm near Alexandria, which is still operating today.

Jerry loved flying planes (and even built his own experimental plane), directing his church choir, and playing in the Altoona Symphony Orchestra, which he did for almost 40 years. Jerry was preceded in death by wife Eleanor, and is survived by daughters Nancy (Barker) Grove ’65, Evelyn, and Patricia, and seven grandchildren.

Nov. 11, 2017—Erdean was a homemaker and enjoyed hobbies including boating, birdwatching, sewing, and playing the piano and organ. She was preceded in death by husband Paul, and is survived by sons Larry and Kenneth, and four grandchildren.

Feb. 6, 2018—Nell had a lifelong career in education, serving as a high school math teacher and guidance counselor. Her passions included shopping, playing bridge, reading,

Jan. 2, 2018—Betty served as a music teacher in the West Shore School District in New Cumberland, Pa., for many years before retiring in 1986. She loved to play piano and sing, especially in the Camp Hill Presbyterian Church choir. She was also an active volunteer for her church and the Camp Hill Women’s Club. Betty was preceded in death by husband John O’Donnell ’43 and daughter Pamela (O’Donnell) Intreri ’74. She is survived by daughters Linda (O’Donnell) Tocket ’75 and Marsha, son John, and two granddaughters.

Jan. 23, 2018—Patricia used her degree in home economics at home and in the community, teaching evening sewing classes for adults and serving as a substitute teacher for the Huntingdon (Pa.) Area School District. Patricia was a very active member of the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church for 50 years. Her other interests included singing, playing bridge, baking, dancing, solving crossword puzzles, golfing, and traveling. She was preceded

F. David Marschka ’48

Feb. 10, 2018—Dave was employed at the RCA Corporation in Lancaster, Pa., as an electronics engineer for more than 40 years.

At RCA, Dave helped design the imaging components of the world’s first weather satellite and also the satellites that mapped the moon’s surface for a successful landing of Apollo 11. He served in the Grandview United Methodist Church choir for 50 years, where he also served as treasurer. After retirement, Dave traveled frequently, was a passionate supporter of environmental causes, and served a term with the Peace Corps in Liberia. Dave was preceded in death by son Richard and brother Edwin Marschka ’51, and is survived by wife Audrey (Madeira) Marschka ’50, sons David, Douglas Marschka ’73, and Daniel, daughter Deanna, and seven grandchildren.

Jan. 12, 2018—Daniel earned a master’s degree in foreign relations from the University of Chicago in Illinois and a law degree from Columbia University in New York. He practiced corporate law for 40 years in New York City. Daniel was preceded in death by parents Byron ’22 and Ada (Cassel) Sell ’20, wife Florence and siblings Helen Sell ’57, Virginia, and Byron. Feb. 17, 2018—Bus entered the U.S. Army after graduation, serving much of his time in the Army Chemical Center. After his service, he earned a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He worked as a rocket scientist with Thiokol Chemical Corporation in Elkton, Md. He founded NST/Engineers, Inc. to pursue work in the environmental science field as a consultant. Bus was preceded in death by parents Elmer and Leone (Hershberger) Hackman ’21, wife Edna, brothers Joseph Hackman ’52 and Lowell Hackman ’54, and granddaughter Lisa. He is survived by sons Matthew and Christian, and four grandchildren.

Avondale Presbyterian Church. She was also a 4-H leader, food cupboard volunteer, and an English as a second language tutor. She was an avid cyclist and an accomplished seamstress. Christine was preceded in death by husband Robert Trostle ’49, and is survived by daughter Carol, son David, and five grandchildren.

Nov. 14, 2017—John was a graduate of McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Ill., and also served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by brother Harold Keener ’53 and son Alan. He is survived by wife Donna, daughters Nancy and Lynne, son Dave, and three grandchildren.

Dec. 6, 2017—Kathryn, of Entriken, Pa., earned a master’s degree from Penn State University and spent her career teaching at Saltillo High School and Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center for more than four decades until her retirement in 1991.

She was an active member of St. Matthew’s Church of Christ and the Lincoln Grange 914. Kathryn enjoyed gardening, canning, and cooking. She is survived by husband Harry, son John, daughter Mary Ann, and five grandchildren.

Mona M. (Thompson) Shaffer ’49

Feb. 27, 2018—Mona had careers in both education and the ministry. She earned a master’s degree in special education from Millersville University in Lancaster, Pa., in 1973, and taught in the York public schools until her retirement. She also was one of the first women to be ordained in the United Methodist Church, and served numerous churches across Pennsylvania.

Mona’s interests included spending time at Ocean Grove, N.J., sewing, crocheting, and cooking. She was preceded in death by husband Paul Shaffer ’50. She is survived by daughters Joy and Jill, as well as four grandchildren.

Jan. 23, 2018—Christine was a lifetime resident of Chester County, Pa., who served as a member and Sunday school teacher at

He worked for All-American Airways and was a member of the Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church in Pennsylvania. David also volunteered with Meals on Wheels, loved science and electronics, selling and servicing radios and TVs, and traveling. He was preceded in death by parents Sara and Claude Snider ’12, son Rick, and is survived by wife Audra, son Ronald, daughter Debra, and two granddaughters.

Jan. 29, 2018—Ted served as a U.S. Navy officer during the Korean War. He also served in many positions for more than 40 years with Houghton International in Valley Forge, Pa. He retired in 1995 as vice president of marketing and a member of the board of directors. Ted was preceded in death by father Herman Kauffman ’30, daughter Sharon, and is survived by daughter Lynda and one grandson.

March 14, 2018—During her professional career, Nina worked as a social worker and for the Girl Scouts of America organization.

Nov. 28, 2017—Vera served with Brethren Volunteer Service in Germany, where she met her husband. The couple moved back to Manassas, Va., where they remained lifelong residents. Vera dedicated much of her time to service: she tended a huge garden where she grew food for her family and the community, and she volunteered at the Manassas Church of the Brethren as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, Bible school assistant, camp counselor, and disaster services volunteer. Vera was preceded in death by husband Harley. She is survived by son Michael and daughters Kathy, Christa, and Ruth, and eight grandchildren, including Hannah Miller ’13.

Dec. 17, 2017—Nan had a career filled with diverse professional positions, including rural electric member services director, political campaign manager, newspaper editor, and two stints at the College—in the public relations and annual giving offices.

She also served in many community service volunteer roles, including board positions for J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, the League of Women Voters, Huntingdon County United Way, and television station WPSX and radio station WPSU. Her passions included cooking, travel, and nature. She is survived by husband James Hunt ’56, daughter Cathy (Hunt) Sherman ’81, son Douglas, and two grandchildren.

Feb. 12, 2018—Clark was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served during the Korean War. He was also retired from Sperry New Holland in Belleville, Pa., and a member of the Milroy United Methodist Church. Clark was preceded in death by wife Marlene. He is survived by daughters Diane and Kaye-Raye, and four grandchildren.

J. Franklin Moist ’55

April 18, 2018—Frank attended Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, N.J., and was ordained in 1958. He served as a hospital chaplain and parish pastor in Pennsylvania and New York during his career as a Presbyterian minister. His hobbies included collecting antiques, reading, and studying history, especially biographies and autobiographies. Frank is survived by numerous extended family members, including niece Jamie (Moist) Cunningham ’99.

Donald M. Oakman ’55

Jan. 8, 2018—Donald received a doctorate in dental surgery from the University of Pittsburgh. He then served a term in the U.S. Air Force before opening his own dental practice in Huntingdon, Pa., which he maintained for 53 years. He was a member and president of the Huntingdon Dental Society, a member of the Pennsylvania Dental Association, and a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Huntingdon.

Donald is survived by wife Jo Ann, sons Donald and Jeffrey, daughter Jill, and five grandchildren.

April 14, 2018—Betty earned a master’s degree in education from Villanova University and a master’s degree in reading education from Arcadia University.

She utilized her degrees throughout her 43-year teaching career in the Neshaminy school district in Pennsylvania. Betty served as a member of the College’s Alumni Council. She enjoyed traveling, especially family vacations to Hilton Head Island, S.C. Betty is survived by husband John Golden ’56, daughter Jill, son Gregory, and four grandchildren.

April 17, 2018—Bill held a wide variety of positions throughout his professional career, including ordinance officer for the U.S. Navy, fingerprint analyst for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, special education teacher for Williamsburg School District, state rehabilitation counselor, and personnel director for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Outside of these positions, Bill loved reading, politics, genealogy, and creating stained glass. He is survived by wife Elaine, son William, and one grandson.

Eva I. (Wagner) Wampler ’58

April 7, 2018—Eva was a home economics teacher in York and Lancaster, Pa., for several years before returning to Huntingdon, where she served as a homemaker and substitute teacher. Eva was active in the community; she was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren, serving in the roles of deacon, Sunday school teacher, chair of the Witness Commission, choir member, and Hospitality Team member. She also played an active role in the Refugee Resettlement in the United States program. Additionally, she served as member of the Huntingdon League of Women Voters and founding member of the Huntingdon County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Eva had a passion for traveling; she traveled to 55 countries and all 50 states during her life. She is survived by husband Dale Wampler, emeritus professor of computer science, son David, daughter Marianne, and four grandchildren.

Aliceann M. Wohlbruck ’58

March 19, 2018—Aliceann received a master’s degree in public administration from Syracuse University in New York.

During her professional career, she worked for the mayor of Syracuse, the National Association of Counties, and finally, the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) until her retirement in 2003. She served as the director of NADO’s Research Foundation at its creation, the association’s first full-time chief executive, and the executive director.

Throughout her career, she lived in Pakistan, Switzerland, and Germany. She traveled the world twice and visited 49 states and 44 countries. Aliceann was president of the Alumni Council, member of the Board of Trustees, and recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award. She is survived by husband Bernard Hillenbrand, sons Craig and Eric, stepchildren Lisa, Susan, John, and Laura, and eight grandchildren.

Maxine C. Ross ’59

April 16, 2018—Maxine earned a master’s degree in education from Penn State University and had a 30-year career as a teacher in the Altoona Area and Hollidaysburg Area school districts, before retiring in 1989. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and the Asbury United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday school secretary, financial secretary, and organist. Maxine had a passion for playing music, reading, and following Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters, including Marian Ross ’58.

Barry G. Sipes ’59

March 2, 2018—Barry worked for several decades in public school districts in Chester County, Pa., as an administrator and guidance counselor. He retired in 1998, dedicating his time to his passions, which included reading, jogging, and traveling. He was also an avid sports fan, supporting teams including the New York Yankees and the Washington Redskins. Barry was preceded in death by wife Sue (Brandt) Sipes ’62. He is survived by sons Brad, Tim, and Paul.

Feb. 6, 2018—Jim served in the U.S. Army before his time at Juniata. He then spent his career serving as a chemistry and physics teacher in the Williamsburg (Pa.) school district and as director of distribution and

warehousing for Warnaco in Duncansville, Pa. Jim spent his summers teaching in the College’s Science in Motion program. He was a member of the Saxton American Legion Post No. 169, and enjoyed following the Pittsburgh Steelers, watching NASCAR, spending time with his German shepherds, hunting, and spending time at his cabin. Jim is survived by wife Jacqueline, daughters Gabi and Virginia, sisters Jolene (Williams) McNichols ’61 and Darlene (Williams) Zuercher ’66, and two granddaughters.

Raymond G. Gallagher ’60

Jan. 19, 2018—Ray completed graduate studies at University of California, Los Angeles, where he received a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and material science, and at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa. Additionally, he graduated from the executive program in marketing at Columbia University in New York. Ray was employed by PPG for 45 years, serving in various positions and twice earning the President’s Award for Technical Excellence. He earned several U.S. and international patents and made significant contributions to heat transfer technology. After retiring from PPG in 2004, he started his own company, Gallagher Technical Services, which he operated until his full retirement in 2014. For leisure, he enjoyed golf, tennis, and table tennis. He is survived by wife Patricia, son Jeff, and daughter Renee, as well as six grandchildren, including Noah Sabo ’20.

Earl L. Wehry Jr. ’62

Oct. 16, 2017—Earl earned a doctorate in chemistry from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. He then served as professor of chemistry at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for 26 years until his retirement in 1996. He was not only known for his mentorship, but also for his significant research contributions, as he published more than 110 research papers. Earl was nationally recognized as an expert in phosphorescence and fluorescence spectroscopy. Earl’s passions included sports, classical and jazz music, and collecting music, sports, and train memorabilia.

Oct. 5, 2017—Jim served as a science teacher in the Pine-Richland School District in Gibsonia, Pa., where he also coached football and wrestling. After retiring as a teacher, he operated Jim Gindlesperger Construction.

He was interested in history, mathematics, and puzzles. Jim is survived by wife Pamela, daughters Tracey, Tami, and Erin, stepson Brian, stepdaughter Lauren, and four grandchildren.

Kenneth C. McKendree ’64

Nov. 8, 2017—Ken served in the U.S. Army starting in 1964, earning several honors including the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Sharpshooter Medal. He graduated from the Army Language School in Monterey, Calif., and earned a degree from Syracuse University. He then pursued a career in accounting. He became CPA-certified in 1972, and went on to become a partner with the accounting firm of Ross, Langan, & McKendree in McLean, Va. His passions included rock and roll and blues music, playing the saxophone, driving his Corvette, spending time outdoors, and following the Washington, D.C., professional sports teams.

Dec. 7, 2017—Harold, of Ephrata, Pa., was the second-generation owner of Lester R. Summers Trucking until his retirement in 2013. Harold was also very active in the community, serving as president of the Lancaster County chapter of the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, president of the Ephrata Area school board, mayor of Akron, Pa., and president of the Ephrata Area Recreation Center board of directors. Harold is survived by wife June, son John Summers Jr. ’84, daughters Sandra Summers ’92, Rebecca, and Susan, and 10 grandchildren.

Barbara H. (Heyderhoff) Engelbart ’66

Dec. 15, 2017—Barbara started her career teaching home economics at Ramapo High School in New Jersey. Later, she earned a master’s degree in social work from New York University and went on to work at

Barnert Hospital, Saint Clare’s Hospital, and Tri-Hospice. She was very active at the First Reformed Church of Pompton Plains, N.J., where her volunteer roles included elder, deacon, and choir member. Barbara is survived by husband Edward, daughter Bonnie, and three grandchildren.

Jan. 20, 2018—Gary served as a radio operator in the U.S. Navy from 1968-72.

After his military service, he had several professional positions throughout his career, but his primary pursuit was in the field of sports writing. He worked in the sports division at the Hickory Daily Record in Hickory, N.C., and served as the sports editor for the Observer News Enterprise in Newton, N.C. Gary was an avid sports fan, who enjoyed watching sports of all types, visiting sports venues, and compiling sports statistics. He is survived by wife Monica.

Charlotte J. (Barnes) Sidell ’68

Feb. 24, 2018—Char, of Needham, Mass., earned master’s degrees in child study from Tufts University and in library services from Simmons College, both in Massachusetts. She worked in various public schools and nursery schools before she discovered her passion for being a librarian. Even after retirement, Char still volunteered as a librarian and was honored as volunteer of the year in 2017 by the Codman Academy in Dorchester. She was involved in book clubs, garden clubs, bridge clubs, and the League of Women Voters.

She also loved to listen to music, travel, and attend Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts–which she did for 46 years. Char is survived by husband Richard, son Philip, daughter Kate, and three grandchildren.

March 26, 2018—Bill, of Ft. Washington, Pa., served as a research biologist with Rohm & Haas, a Dow Chemical company, during his professional career. He was also a dedicated member of the Upper Dublin Lutheran Church, and was actively involved with its annual flea market for several decades. Bill enjoyed saltwater fishing and gardening. He is survived by wife Kathy, sons Jeremy and Samuel, and two grandchildren.

He was a resident of Woodstock, Vt., where he served as the pastor at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock for more than 25 years. He greatly enjoyed waterskiing and spending time at Lake Mascoma, N.H. Norman was preceded in death by father C. Everett Koop, former U.S. surgeon general, mother Elizabeth, and brother David. He is survived by wife Anne, children Charles, Tina, and David, and seven grandchildren.

Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa. He completed his residency and served as an emergency room physician at the Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie, Pa., before opening private practices in Waterford and Meadville. He most recently worked for the Veterans Administration in northwest Pennsylvania.

Stephen was a baseball fan and he was especially loyal to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He also enjoyed playing guitar, golfing, and bowling. He is survived by daughters Stephanie, Melissa, and Kelli.

Edward D. Baker Jr. ’70

March 7, 2018—Ed earned his doctorate in podiatric medicine from the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, and completed his residency at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Edward was a self-employed podiatrist and owner of Huntingdon Foot Care. He was also a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Huntingdon, the American Podiatric Medical Association, and the former Huntingdon No. 1 volunteer fire company. Ed’s interests included traveling, collecting classic rock vinyl albums, trying new types of food, watching NASCAR and other sports, and reading. He was a big fan of Jimmy Buffet’s music and Will Ferrell’s movies. He is survived by wife Laurie and daughter Lynn.

Oct. 29, 2017—Edward worked in various museums and historical societies during his professional career, including 35 years of service with the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums in Sturbridge, Mass. He also spent summers working in Wyoming for the National Outdoor Leadership School. Edward was an active member of the Quaker faith, and his hobbies included bread baking, carpentry, gardening, and reading. Edward is survived by wife Carol, daughters Sarah and Hannah, son Andrew, and two grandsons.

Nov. 14, 2017—Skip earned his master’s degree in English from Penn State University. He honed his technical writing skills at AMP, Inc. in Harrisburg and at Godfrey Advertising in Lancaster, Pa. At the time of his passing, he was president of SNR Advertising, Lancaster, an agency he co-founded in 2006. He was also a published author of five textbooks for trade schools on various technical subjects. His lifelong passion of reading was rivaled only by his love of music, especially blues and rock. He enjoyed traveling, kayaking, and attending concerts. He is survived by wife Lynne (Wolford) Sterling ’74 and daughter Megan.

March 13, 2018—Cynthia received a master’s degree from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in Glassboro, N.J. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in 1974 in Berlin, N.J., where she was employed until she moved to Florida to work for the Harcourt Brace Jovanovich publishing company. Upon returning to New Jersey in 1991, she held a position as media specialist and librarian at Cramer School in Camden until her retirement in 2011.

April 6, 2018—Brent received a master’s degree in business administration from York College of Pennsylvania. He also earned his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) and Certified Insurance Counselor designations throughout his 28-year career in the commercial insurance industry.

Additionally, Brent served as an officer for the central Pennsylvania chapter of CPCU. He was active in the community, volunteering for Big Brothers Big Sisters and Junior Achievement, and frequently participating in charity runs. He enjoyed following Pittsburgh sports, hunting, and coaching his children’s sports teams. Brent is survived by wife Liz, daughters Katherine and Megan, and son Adam.

Feb. 7, 2018—Kat, of Hanover, Pa., was a stay-at-home mother and enjoyed joining her family on adventures, including mission trips to Jamaica, hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, snorkeling in Culebra, skiing the Rocky Mountains, and visiting national parks in almost every state. She was very active at the Codorus Church of the Brethren in Pennsylvania, serving as senior high

youth adviser, member of the bell choir, and coordinator for the Brethren Disaster Relief auction. Kat was integrally involved in the execution of annual Wilderness Medicine Conferences her family hosted on their property. She was preceded in death by her parents George and Jeanne (Snively) Houghton ’55, and is survived by husband Eric Bowman ’90 and sons Andrew, Jacob, Patrick, and Brandon.

Donald Guisler ’33, Chris is survived by wife Virginia and daughters Lauren and Elizabeth.

Feb. 2, 2018—Marcus, of Carlisle, Pa., received a master’s degree from Shippensburg University. He then served as a water pollution specialist for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

He enjoyed hunting, white-water rafting, and spending time on his farm. Marcus is survived by mother Carrol, stepfather Jeff, and brother Christopher.

Jan. 8, 2017—Roger, a former church trustee for the College and recipient of the ChurchCollege Service Award, was a licensed minister in the Church of the Brethren. He served as pastor for several congregations in Pennsylvania during his career and was an active volunteer in community service organizations and for the denomination, including a term as district moderator. He is survived by wife Janice, son Christopher, daughter Andrea, and three grandsons.

Margaret L. (Rupert) McChesney

Feb. 26, 2018—Peggy served as academic records assistant in the Registrar’s Office of the College, retiring in 2002. She was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Huntingdon, singing in the choir and active on various committees. She also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Huntingdon County Library. Peggy enjoyed the arts, plants, the outdoors, and good books. She is survived by daughters Dianne (McChesney) Moore ’83 and Janet (McChesney) D’Alessandro ’85, sons Brett McChesney ’92 and Darren McChesney ’94, and six grandchildren.

Dec. 8, 2017—Bob served as an instructor of biblical studies at the College from 1955 to 1958, before continuing his career at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va., for 37 years until his retirement. His interests included writing, traveling to the American West, hiking, photography, and stamp collecting. Bob is survived by companion Glenna Wampler and several nieces and nephews, including Wendy (Chamberlain) McFadden ’81.

Jan. 1, 2018—Ed earned a degree in chemistry from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa., and taught high school science for more than 40 years until his retirement in 2000. While teaching at Juniata Valley High School in neighboring Alexandria, Pa., Ed was proud to have been one of the founding teachers of the College’s Science in Motion program. He conducted

summer workshops for the program starting in 1997 and became a delivery driver in 1999, transporting science equipment and lab experiment packets to local science teachers, until his retirement in 2009. Ed is survived by wife Ann, son Hal, daughters Mimi and Mary Grace, and two grandchildren.

Nov. 9, 2017—Tony worked at the Mapleton Feed Mill in Mapleton, Pa., for almost two decades before being employed at the College as a custodian from 1978 until his retirement in 2002. He enjoyed outdoor recreation, especially hunting and fishing. He is survived by wife Carol, daughter Theresa, stepsons William, John Yingling ’04, and Joseph, as well as several grandchildren.

Jan. 4, 2018—Milly was employed by the College for 14 years, serving as administrative assistant to the athletic director. After her retirement in 2001, Milly enjoyed traveling with her husband in their recreational vehicle, visiting all but two states in the U.S. She also enjoyed singing in church and community choirs, golfing, and fitness activities. Milly is survived by husband David, sons Mark Sloan ’89 and Neil, and granddaughter Emma.

March 30, 2018—Irv graduated from Penn State University and was employed at the College as the director of general services, a role he held for 32 years. He was an active leader for the Huntingdon Area Jaycees and Huntingdon County PRIDE organizations.

Irv enjoyed hunting, gardening, tending to his koi pond, and following Penn State football. He is survived by wife Judy and sons Patrick and Shawn.

April 7, 2018—Bob earned his degree at Penn State University, where he also played football for the Nittany Lions. He began a 26-year career in coaching as an assistant football coach at Albright College in Reading, Pa., and then continued as head coach at Juniata, then DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., the University of Detroit in Michigan, and Wagner College in New York. He retired in 1977 and was inducted into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Hall of Fame. He had a second career as the

Remembering Chuck Knox ’54 We all have a journey. When I arrived on Juniata’s campus for my freshman year in the fall of 1953, I was a football manager and one of the first guys that I met was Chuck Knox. Chuck was a senior and co-captain of the team. One of my lifetime joys has been our long-term friendship.

We often reflected that some of our best days in life were those at Juniata. For one, Chuck Knox met Shirley, his wife of 66 years, in Huntingdon. He provided key leadership to Juniata’s first undefeated football team in 1953. The next year, he was an assistant coach at Juniata, which was the beginning of his incredible football coaching career that included 22 years as head coach in the National Football League. When you think of it, in those decades as a head coach, he was visible for thousands of Juniata alumni, on the television or in the papers, serving as an example for all of us.

During his life, Chuck and I stayed in touch through Juniata, and Chuck was most generous until the end. An example was the endowed chair he and Shirley created in history. I am proud that our Knox Stadium bears his name, which was the College’s way of expressing its appreciation to this incredible alumnus. I can honestly say that Chuck was a most loyal friend and at all times, was dignified, yet warm. He was courageous, yet kind, essentially modest and a humble coach.

Following Chuck’s passing, I sent a message to Chuck’s devoted wife, Shirley, who stayed by him through his lifetime. I said Chuck left a legacy of work well done in the coaching profession along with goodwill long to be remembered and cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a true Juniatian.

Chuck Knox ’54 served Juniata as a Trustee. He was a member of Juniata’s Athletic Hall of Fame, earned the College’s Alumni Achievement Award, and was presented with an honorary degree from Juniata.

He and wife Shirley also made an investment in the future of Juniata by endowing the Knox Chair in History. In recognition of his many contributions to the College, Knox Stadium is named in his honor.

Charles R. Knox was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, on April 27, 1932. He was the son of the late Charlie and Helen Knox, who had two children, Chuck and his late brother Bill. After graduating Quaker Valley High School, Chuck earned a scholarship to play football at Juniata, where he lettered in football and track. He graduated with distinction in 1954 with a degree in history and a minor in biology. While at Juniata Chuck met his wife of 66 years, the former Shirley Rhine. After graduating, Chuck followed his passion for teaching and became a history teacher and football coach.

Coaching football soon became Chuck’s true calling in life. His 41-year coaching career began at the College, where he started as an unpaid assistant for one season. Chuck then moved on to become an assistant coach at Tyrone High School and then head coach at Ellwood City High School. During this time, he also sold cars at night in order to make ends meet. Following his experience at the high school level, he joined the collegiate ranks as an offensive line coach with stops at Wake Forest and Kentucky. After coaching in college, Chuck began his 32-year NFL coaching career. Beginning with the New York Jets for four years, Chuck then moved on to coach the Detroit Lions for another six

years; he coached the offensive line for both teams. After a successful stint as a position coach, Chuck began an NFL head coaching career, which lasted 22 years and included positions with the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, and Los Angeles Rams, from which he retired after the 1994 season.

Chuck had a knack for turning around underperforming football teams into winning programs which lead to him being named NFL Coach of the Year three times—in 1973, 1980, and 1984. In his first head coaching job, Chuck led the Rams to five NFC West titles while making the playoffs in each of those five seasons. Chuck was a progressive coach in the NFL and one of the first to start an African-American quarterback for the Rams in 1974. In 1978, Knox took over the Buffalo Bills who had a record of 5-11 the previous year. Within two years he turned the Bills into an 11-5 team and won the AFC East Division title.

He led the Seahawks to a 12-4 record and a trip to the AFC championship game in his first year with the team. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 and inducted into the Seahawks Ring of Honor in 2005.

Chuck was tough, loyal, and prided himself on getting the most from his players. He often used Knoxisms in all aspects of life from motivating world-class athletes to discussing life with his children and grandchildren; he always had a Knoxism for the situation. Some of Coach Knox’s favorites: “What you do speaks so well, there is no need to hear what you have to say,” “Play the hand you’re dealt,” and “Don’t tell me how rough the water is—just bring the ship in.” Off the field, Chuck enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing golf, smoking Churchill cigars, and having a Dewars Scotch on the rocks while telling football stories. He came from humble beginnings and, even though he had great success in life, he never forgot where he came from, nor the people who helped him achieve greatness. Chuck often said, “Never forget an old friend for a new one.”

Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, his four children, Chris, Kathy, Colleen, and Chuck Jr., as well as grandchildren, Lee Ann, Bennett, Abigail, Kathryn, Hannah, and Charlie.

I Met a Juniata Alum

in the Most Unusual Place...

In July 2017 my husband, Dave Stoll ’84, and I were at the Red Wing Roots Music Festival in Mt. Solon, Va. We started chatting with the couple next to us and discovered that we were sitting next to another Juniata alum, Virginia Meadows ’03! I will always wonder what put us together at the same spot in this sea of people, but what a cool thing to happen!

At Juniata’s 140th commencement, several students customized the mortar boards of their graduation caps.
