The stories in this issue are a perfect reflection of Juniata’s willingness to imagine a better way, and then, to paraphrase the Nike ads, just implement it. Where else but Juniata would a politics professor be able to follow his muse toward a mid-career change from European politics to the life-and-death politics of Africa? Read Emil Nagengast’s story of African discovery, (one of several Africa stories in this issue, actually.)

The same freedom to discover what works best for the campus is evident in our other stories. When recent events made it clear we had to change our culture to accommodate new issues in safety and security, we did it in a way that fit into Juniata’s culture. When historian Jim Tuten sought ways to engage students in his Civil War class, he went beyond scheduling a Gettysburg field trip—he had the students teach on the battlefield. Two other professors, Deb Kirchhof-Glazier and David Hutto, wanted health professionals to remain open to practicing different types of medicine in rural areas. So they created a course to show students there’s room for improvisation on the path to med school.

All too often organizations become so invested in what is “good enough” that they never try to exceed their grasp. To reach further, to try new ideas, to remain adaptable; these are the tenets that will keep an organization relevant. Juniata practically patented those principles as an educational approach. That’s the Juniata way.

Innovative Inbound Program Invested In by WalMart

the WalMart College Success Award, a $100,000 grant the College will use over the next two years to increase financial aid to allow first-generation students to attend Juniata’s innovative Inbound Retreats program. Inbound is a weeklong preorientation program for incoming freshmen.

WalMart, through the Council of Independent Colleges, recognized Juniata’s demonstrated successes in enrolling, and graduating firstgeneration college students. Juniata was the only higher education institution in Pennsylvania to receive the award.

A group of incoming freshmen take part in a very hands-on art project in this summer’s Inbound program. Juniata received a $100,000 grant from WalMart that allows the College to offer financial aid to first-generation college students so they can participate in Inbound, an informal orientation program for incoming freshmen.

“We take seriously our responsibility to deliver a superb education to every student regardless of family background or income. For example, nearly 40 percent of our graduates have been the first in their families to complete a college education,” says Tom Kepple, Juniata president. “I’m proud to be part of a group of hard-working and creative colleges recognized for their commitment to first-generation and lower-income college students.”

The Inbound Retreats program is in its third year and offers 16 different retreats focused on such interest areas as fine arts, outdoors, community service, sports, environmental science, health and wellness, and dance.

They also will receive small grants to cover any lost wages they would have earned during that week if they were employed during the summer. In addition, the grant includes awards to first-generation students to cover textbook and laboratory expenses during their first semester at Juniata.

field trip. Not so for Juniata’s 2008 General Election course, where eight students attended national party conventions during the first two weeks of the semester.

Bennett Rea ’11, of Oakmont, Pa., Jessica Kline ’09, of Altoona, Pa., Zach Gordon ’11, of Wilmington, Del., Jordan Yeagley ’10, of Danville, Pa., Sarah Dotter ’11, of Wyomissing, Pa., and Seth Fox ’11, of Overland Park, Kan., saw Barack Obama electrify 75,000 people with his nomination acceptance speech at Denver’s Invesco Field. A week later, Emily Houser ’09, of Mount Lebanon, Pa., and Lindsey Lanzendorfer ’09, of Hollidaysburg, Pa., were jolted as Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was introduced to a national audience in St. Paul, Minn.

“I think people there knew they were part of history,” says Kline of Obama’s speech. “When I walked out of that stadium after hearing him unify the party, I thought there is no possible way Obama can lose this election.”

“I don’t think there was a single person in the room that was not excited by (Palin’s) speech,” says 8

Hauser. “When you see conventions on TV it looks like a show. When you’re there in person you can literally feel how thrilled people were.”

“Instead of learning about campaigns from a textbook, we are going to look at a campaign as it naturally unfolds,” says political scientist Dennis Plane. The opportunity to study an election in real time is rare for politics students because the nature of political science is to glean meaning and analysis from past events and past campaigns. “Political science research is not contemporary; it’s all about what happened in the past. Politics is about what’s happening now,” he says.

The students learned that lesson quickly.

All the students were given field assignments by The Washington Center, which sponsored the convention trips. The Juniatians were plunged into media jobs, political experiences and breakneck work schedules. Rea roamed the convention as a video blogger for Fox News. Kline reported for Roll Call. Hauser was a photographer’s assistant for Europe Press Photo Agency.

On top of that, all the students wrote and published op-eds for the Lewistown Sentinel newspaper and blogged nonstop for the Juniata Web site. “It was an eye-opener,” Lanzendorfer says of her stint as a reporter for McClatchy Newspapers’ Washington Bureau. “They were under stress.

Sometimes we would ask an editor a question and they wouldn’t answer.”

Juniata students attended both party conventions and worked for media companies, political organizations and other agencies as part of the College’s 2008 General Election Course.

Back on campus, the students followed the election over the entire semester.

Plane also required every student to log 20 hours of election-related activities over the course of the semester. He doesn’t expect the students to go out and start grassroots campaigns or become political activists.

Instead he’s looking for students to find a spark of political interest. “I felt it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Rea says. “We got to see people strategize and (politick) without seeing it through the lens of the media.”

your hometown street and finding your entire world shaking like an off-kilter washing machine. Chenhao “Stone” Guan ’11 and Donglei “Alex” Du ’11, two international students from Chengdu, China, vividly recall just such an experience because that’s what each was doing May 12, 2008, when a massive earthquake devastated the area around their hometown.

“We had just returned from Juniata two days earlier when the earthquake hit,” says Chenhao. “I woke up and the whole world was moving.”

The earthquake, which registered 7.8 in the Richter scale, struck about 56 miles away from Chengdu, a city of 2 million, including 10 Chinese students enrolled at Juniata.

The quake killed thousands and made millions homeless. Chenhao and Donglei, who are cousins, resisted the urge to protect themselves and immediately looked for ways to help.

“We had no clue what we could do,” says Chenhao. “We went to give blood, but the stations were all full.”

“Eventually we met other students, soldiers, and other people, and we got together and became a help group,” explains Du. The two cousins spent the next 15 days at the largest hospital in Chengdu helping to admit injured citizens. They often worked more than 12 hours a day and slept and ate at the hospital. Other Juniata students from Chengdu collected donations for the Red Cross or worked on similar help teams.

Both students did not hesitate to volunteer, heading out just hours after the earthquake. “As part of a new generation for China, I have a responsibility to help out when China is in trouble,” says Du.

New Wrinkle: Creating ‘Wonder Brain’ Hero for Biology Textbook College textbooks are a known quantity. They are big. They

are densely written. The approach they take to learning hasn’t changed since the Renaissance. Yet biologist Jay Hosler has taken a Renaissance ideal—art—coupled it with a postmodern version of literature—the comic book—and created a prototype sensory biology textbook that could equally be compared to Darwin’s On the Origin of Species or The Fantastic Four.

Hosler, a biologist at Juniata, has recently completed and published (through his company Active Synapse.com) a 128-page chapter of a proposed textbook called Optical Allusions. The chapter follows the comic hero, Wrinkles the Wonder Brain, as he travels back in time and wanders through his own imagination to teach readers how vision evolved. “Test scores in the sciences have been dropping, so clearly the way we teach biology isn’t as effective as it could be,” Hosler says. “If information is tucked into an interesting story, students are more likely to hold onto that information and remember it.”

The National Science Foundation certainly remembered it, awarding the scientist/artist with $46,500 in 2005 to produce one chapter of a proposed larger textbook.

The next step in the evolution of the new product will be classroom testing.

He envisions that the text could be used in an introductory college class or an Advanced Placement high school class.

“There’s solid science facts in there as well as puns, gross-out humor and other jokes. It’s sort of like Looney Tunes cartoons,” he says. “I attempted to write it so a son and his father could read it together and enjoy it.”

Most folks would assume college kids don’t have

a moment to spare, what with classes, homework, study time and other commitments, but a group of students at Juniata have found time to spin yarn(s), needle each other and create clothing where none existed before. That’s right, they’re knitting.

Every Monday at 6 p.m., 10 to 20 Juniata students drop by the home of Prudence Ingerman, senior instructor in the Intensive English Program and adviser for the Knitting Club, to knit, to talk, to relax, and to create knitwear ranging from simple hats and scarves to shawls, shopping bags and blankets.

The club also takes on two service projects a year. This semester, club members are knitting 10 to 15 hats and scarves for Huntingdon House, a counseling center and shelter for women and

families. Last spring, the club donated 10 caps and scarves to The Red Scarf Project, an initiative founded by the Orphan Foundation of America that gives handmade red scarves to college-bound orphans and foster youth.

“You can knit while you’re doing other things, like watching movies or talking with friends,” says Shannon Smith, a junior from Wexford, Pa. and president of the knitting club.

“I sent an e-mail a few years ago asking if anyone was interested in forming a knitting club—at 3 p.m. toward the end of April, which is a busy time for students,” Ingerman says. “In an hour I had 32 responses.” The club has about 20 to 30 regular members.

“We had 60 students sign up this year and 50 the year before. Some join just to learn how to knit and others like the meetings. People stay as long as they can—20 minutes or two hours,” Smith says.

Ingerman, in addition to her role as adviser, also teaches knitting to any member who wants to learn.

Knitting needles range from $1 to top-of-the-line models that are $15, and yarn is available at the club or students can buy their own.

Biologist Vince Buonaccorsi had only a passing acquaintance with volleyball, but when Mark Pavlik, coach of the national champion Penn State men’s volleyball team asked him to crunch some numbers, Buonaccorsi and a team of students came in for the assist.

Penn State’s Mark Pavlik, a Huntingdon-area resident, is married to Heather Pavlik ’95, associate head coach, women’s volleyball at Juniata. The couples’ children attended the same daycare on the Juniata campus.

Although volleyball is not exactly a health problem, Buonaccorsi points out that the statistical analysis model used to predict volleyball victories is the same type of model used to analyze risk factors influencing the probability of getting a disease.

Buonaccorsi assigned the project to alumni Jeffrey Kleinberger ’08 and Shayla Sims ’08 and student Tyler Kochel ’09, from Lancaster, Pa. Pavlik delivered a pile (105 sheets) of game statistics and the students delivered their analysis shortly before the opening of the 2008 season. “Mark thought it would be too onerous to ask students to enter all these statistics, but I told him students will do anything for the sake of science,” Buonaccorsi says. “They’re used to doing onerous things.”

In a typical biostatistics class, students collate and analyze disease distribution data, forest growth rates, student health surveys. You know—something biological. At Juniata, a team of three students completed a statistical project that gave an off-court scientific assist to the national champion Penn State men’s volleyball team.

As a project for Juniata’s Biostatistics course, taught by Vince Buonaccorsi, associate professor of biology, a student team examined game statistics from Penn State’s entire 2007 season. Through analysis of a variety of game statistics provided by Mark Pavlik, head coach of men’s volleyball at Penn State, the team was able to discover which individual skills were most important to victory and in turn provide analysis on how to organize practice time to hone those skills.

“I wasn’t looking for statistical trends to use in a match, because we can see that in the game. I was looking for statistics to give me some guidance on structuring our practices so we can maximize our strengths and minimize our weaknesses,” says

As Erin Dodson, once a dominating two-sport athlete in volleyball and basketball for Altoona Area High School who came to Juniata as a freshman in 2004, stood on the endline of the Memorial Gym court waiting to be introduced—a position she took up only four times during her short career in the Blue and Gold—there were only faint physical reminders of the promising athlete who first arrived on the Huntingdon campus four years ago.

But the feisty competitive drive was still there. You could sense it in her quivering voice as it echoed around the gym when Dodson spoke at the pregame ceremony retiring her number 12 jersey, prior to Juniata’s home contest against Washington & Lee University at the 2008 Wid Guisler Invitational Oct. 24.

It was the same spirit that Juniata head coach Larry Bock saw in Dodson, and led him to recruit her to Juniata in the first place.

“She’s been an inspiration to me and all who know her,” said Danielle Hart ’04, who wore number 12 before Erin and

is now managing editor at InvestorPlace Media in Rockville, Md. “In the face of intense adversity, Erin’s shown incredible strength and maintained such a positive attitude. I wouldn’t have missed the night that they retired her jersey, because I can’t think of a person more deserving of that honor.”

“Erin is a courageous, tough Altoona kid who is staring down way more than anyone does on a field or court,” said Bock.

Dodson was recruited out of Altoona Area High School, where she earned first team All-State honors in volleyball and basketball. Plagued by an incessant headache throughout her first games at Juniata, Dodson soon had to withdraw from the team. She was diagnosed with a tumor on the brain a short time later.

Dodson will be the first former Juniata athlete to have his or her playing number retired. Former women’s volleyball player Carolyn Stambaugh; former studentathlete, coach, and athletic director Bill Berrier ’60; and former football player Joe Kershishnik have all been honored by Juniata with retired jerseys, but none has officially had their former playing number permanently retired.

“She has found a way to positively impact our teams at Juniata since her playing days were so brutally interrupted,” said Bock. “She’ll remain a legend as a player, a teammate and as an amazing human being.”

After undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments for nearly a year, she returned to Juniata as a student for the Fall 2005 semester. During Juniata’s 2004 national championship run, members of the women’s volleyball team wore armbands displaying Dodson’s number 12. Dodson made the trip to Rochester, Minn., for the national semifinals and championship game, and her role with the team was a central focus of CBS Sports when it covered the team for its Fall Championships of the NCAA special, which aired that winter. Taking a Shot: Turning Losing into an Opportunity

Cannon is playing for the Washington Generals, the perennially hapless opponent of the Harlem Globetrotters.

Cannon immediately joined the international jet-set, accompanying the Globetrotters on an international tour to Israel, Turkey, Bosnia, and Romania.

“Brian is exactly the type of player I’m looking for—he’s fundamentally sound and he was well coached in college,” said Generals general manager John Ferrari, who signed Cannon. “I love D-III guys; they’re doing something they’ve been doing since they have been five or six years old, and they want to keep doing it.”

Cannon completed his Juniata career with 1,391 points and 579 career rebounds, becoming just the fifth player in program history to finish with both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

“For all of us that do this, all of us who are basketball guys, you probably dream of the opportunity to play professionally at some level, and the opportunity to do this is unique in itself,” says Juniata head coach Greg Curley. “He had other opportunities to pursue on a professional level, but I think this one, for the experience it would give him, is without question the best.”

Cannon earned First Team All-Landmark Conference honors, and was a Second Team All-Region selection by d3hoops.com.

Ferrari sees Cannon playing a different role with the Generals.

“He’s a big body, but I’ve got a lot of bigger bodies on the roster so I’m going to use him in a variety of positions,” said Ferrari. “I told him I wanted him to shoot more, and his eyes lit up.”

The Washington Generals have been the tour opponent of the Globetrotters since 1953, although they have played under a variety of names at times in their history.

The last time the team posted a “W?” A 100-99 win in 1971 in Martin, Tenn., which ended the Globetrotters’ 2,495-game winning streak.

Amber Thomas ’09, of Ephrata, Pa., capped what has been one of the most storied volleyball careers at Juniata by being named the ESPN The Magazine College Division Women’s Volleyball Academic All-American of the Year and a First Team Academic All-American, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

In addition, she is a finalist for the second year in a row for the Collegiate Women Sports Awards’ 2008-09 Division III Woman Athlete of the Year. She is one of 11 finalists for the award, which will be presented June 22 in New York City.

Thomas, a communications POE, is Juniata’s 19th Academic All-American overall, and only the fifth to earn First Team Academic All-America honors.

She is the second Eagle women’s volleyball player to be named Academic All-American of the Year in the sport as well as a First Team Academic All-American.

In her awardstudded final year as a competitor, Thomas earned American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive year and was named a First Team All-American for the third year in a row. She was a Third Team All-American honoree as a freshman, and joined volleyballer Christy Orndorff ’95 as the only Juniata athletes to earn All-America honors all four years of her athletic career.

Academically, Thomas is a three-time dean’s list student and was inducted into the National Honors Communication Society this past spring. She was a teaching assistant for the course “Introduction of Human Communication” during the Fall 2007 semester and wrote an online magazine article about campus technology for Extra, the Internet companion to Juniata magazine.

The most rewarding aspect of my job is convincing reluctant students to come on my summer course. I know this trip will have a profound impact on how they view themselves and Africa. Although we spend only three weeks in Senegal and The Gambia, it is enough time for the students to see that they are stronger than they believed and that Africa should be a source of fascination rather than fear.

We visit remote villages and the fourth largest city in Africa, Dakar. We speak with teachers at rural kindergartens, editors of national newspapers, with village chiefs and members of the National Assembly.

The students have the chance to discuss politics with Gambian university students and “bumsters” on the beach. We stay in an air-conditioned hotel and at sweltering, bug-filled huts at nature camps. For the students their empowerment comes from facing anxieties and sweeping away misconceptions. When my students return they feel they have learned a secret that none of their friends or relatives know: Africa is not scary, it is exhilarating.

I did not always see it that way.

I realized I had developed a discerning eye for Africa. It gave me a sense of accomplishment knowing it was my first time to

Burkina Faso, yet I didn’t see anything unfamiliar from the plane window. I knew what to look for to get an idea of the city I was visiting.

The Air Senegal flight on June 10, 2008 from Dakar to Ouagadougou was one of the most comfortable flights I had ever taken. I struggled through articles in French from the Air Senegal magazine. I listened to South African music on my iPod and drank a mini-bottle of red wine. I chatted with a man from Mali about U.S. foreign policy. When we landed, I was happy and relaxed.

Inside the airport I used my kindergarten French to explain that I didn’t have a visa. Landing without a visa meant handing over a bribe, paying an inflated price for the visa, or spending a lot of time in a police waiting area while everyone took their time figuring out what to do with me. Instead, the Burkinabe customs officials did something unexpected: they took my picture, handed me a bill for the photos, and the visa that was less than half of what I would have paid if I had applied for the visa from the Burkina Faso embassy in Washington, D.C. The woman in charge of the process handed me a receipt and said (in French): “You may enter the country. Come back for your visa in two days.” She pointed toward the baggage claim.

I was so impressed with the efficiency that I shook several hands, repeating “merci” to the whole customs team, though they maintained their tough faces as they tried to figure out why I was so happy.

Ouaga International Airport was hot and dirty and filled with far more soldiers and policemen than any U.S. airport I have ever visited, but I have never moved so comfortably through an airport. I saw Wossie on the sidewalk. Wossie Mazengia ’01 is currently a Foreign Service officer at the U.S. Embassy in Ouagadougou. We hugged and she asked, “Was everything OK?” I said, “It was fabulous.” From her expression I could tell she thought I just didn’t want to complain.

We drove to an air-conditioned restaurant and spent the next few hours catching up on her career and on my various experiences in Africa over the past four years. A lot had changed for both of us since the days when she sat in my classes in Good Hall.

As much as anyone, Wossie was responsible for putting me on the path to Africa. I first met Wossie in 1997 as a freshman in my Introduction to International Politics course, when I was firmly embedded in the field of European politics. During her years at Juniata I barely mentioned Africa in my 21

international politics courses. It was a distant place for me, and I felt no need to close the distance.

My first visit to Africa was a 2004 flight into Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to conduct research and interviews at the headquarters of the newly created African Union. Martin Abang Ewi ’99, another of my former students, was a security analyst for the A.U. Like Wossie, Martin helped steer me toward Africa.

While Wossie hadn’t ever been afraid to accuse me of being narrow-minded and Eurocentric, Martin pushed me toward Africa with his quiet, impregnable faith in humanity. At the time, I couldn’t figure out how someone from Cameroon could be so optimistic about everything, but after four years of travel in Africa I have learned that Martin’s hopefulness is very African.

In 2004 I decided to spend part of my sabbatical at the headquarters of the African Union in Ethiopia.

I was in the midst of a research project comparing the European Union to the United Nations when I decided finally to follow the advice of Martin and Wossie: “It is time for you to expand your horizons and to examine the most interesting continent in the world,” Wossie said.

Since 1999 I have been the only person teaching international politics at Juniata. A growing number of

my students joined Martin and Wossie in complaining, “How can you pretend that the U.S. and Europe are the only parts of the world whose politics are worth teaching?”

The end of the Cold War pulled the developing world out of the shadows of superpower geopolitics and onto center stage. With every new group of freshmen, it grew increasingly difficult for me to justify courses on the international aspects of Cold War politics that I had been trained to teach. Most students didn’t know enough about the world to raise objections about the relevance of Cold War frameworks, but a growing number of students were frustrated over the absence of Africa from the curriculum.

“You don’t understand life in academia,” I explained to my critics. “I have studied European politics since my freshman year in college. I do Europe, not Africa.”

But then, the African Union was created in 2002 by African leaders with the explicit intent to copy aspects of the European Union I had spent years studying. In the 1990s the EU evolved from a trade organization into a community of democratic values that spelled out the detailed political criteria all members and applicant members were required to meet. Shortly thereafter, the African leaders announced they would adopt new, bold standards of “good governance” and these standards would become the foundation of the new African Union.

In 2003, Martin took a job at the A.U. and offered to arrange housing for me as well as access to AU officials and archives in Ethiopia.

Wossie knew she had me trapped: “If you don’t go to Ethiopia, you are a hypocrite. You tell your students travel is crucial for their intellectual development, but you won’t take this step to Africa when everything is in place for you.” She had spent the majority of her life in Ethiopia and she had many relatives in Addis Ababa. There was no way that she would let me get out of spending a month in her hometown.

Prior to the 2004 flight to Ethiopia I had traveled to Cuba and every corner of Europe, including several parts of the former Soviet Union, but as my plane descended into Addis Ababa I was afraid. Though I did a lot of reading to prepare, I couldn’t escape the picture of Africa that Bob Geldof’s Live Aid concert had stamped in my mind: conflict and starvation.

Could I walk past starving children? How would I manage in a lawless, violent, AIDS-afflicted country?

I thought, “If Martin isn’t at the airport, I am taking the next plane home.” Fortunately, Martin was at the airport.

An African Odyssey There is an old expression among travelers: “Africa gets under your skin.” Prior to my trip to

Ethiopia I had taken this saying literally and loaded up on vaccinations. But after I returned from my month in Ethiopia I understood. I had to go back. No other place had grabbed me so powerfully.

By fate, two months after I returned to the U.S., I ran into Buba Misawa in Pittsburgh. He and I were friends in graduate school and I hadn’t seen him in 10 years. He is a Nigerian American who teaches African politics at Washington & Jefferson College and at the University of Pittsburgh. I told him how Africa

had gotten under my skin. “Of course,” he said, “every American who goes to Africa cannot stay away.” We sat on a bench in front of the Pitt library and an hour later had designed a summer program for Juniata students in Senegal and The Gambia.

The third African who changed my life, Buba took on the role of my African mentor and role model. His passion is bringing American students to West Africa so they can undergo the change of consciousness I experienced. He remains my most important source of knowledge about West African politics and culture.

With his guidance I gained the confidence to forge strong ties between Juniata and The Gambia. Without him Juniata would not have its annual summer course in The Gambia or a full-semester study abroad program at the University of The Gambia.

The Gambia, in West Africa, is a tiny country almost completely surrounded (save for a small coastline) by the larger country, Senegal. Known as the “Switzerland of Africa,” The Gambia is one of the few African countries to maintain a functioning and stable democracy since its independence. Since declaring independence from Great Britain in 1965, the country, which has avoided the tribal and ethnic strife that plagues other African nations, has had a multi-party political system and has held elections regularly.

Since 2005 I have flown to Africa seven times and I have worked in Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Morocco and The Gambia. I have taken over 60 Juniata students to West Africa. The worst conflict I have seen during this time was a fight between two English soccer fans at a bar in The Gambia. I have seen happy, well-fed children everywhere I have visited. These kids, many of whom own almost nothing, have more joy in one little finger than American kids, most of whom own piles of stuff, will feel in their entire childhood. I still cannot

reconcile the optimism and kindness I have felt in Africa with the atrocities, most famously in Rwanda, that define the American view of Africa. Over the past few years I have enjoyed seeing confused Juniata students as they repeatedly encounter kindheartedness, rather than hostility, in Africa.

“My images of Africa were not very good: ones like poverty, diseases, riots, and government corruption,” says Tomoyo Anazawa ’09, an international student from Japan. “Due to Africa’s history, I didn’t think that they would like foreigners.

“I have been abroad before, but this is the only place I have actually experienced ‘culture shock,’ (Gambia) broadened my scope of opinions,” says Chelsea Winder ’09, of Altoona, Pa., who came on the summer 2008 trip and has signed up to return in 2009.

Africa also forced me to find a new focus for my teaching and scholarship. For someone in his forties, with no foundation in African politics, this was not a simple thing to tackle, but almost every week since I came to Juniata in 1996 I have berated students with the same message: “Surviving, and then laughing at, hardship makes you a stronger person. Challenging situations make you grow. If you want to stay in your comfort zone, why pay so much to go to college?”

No, I’m not pretending to be a Marine recruiter, but for many students (and their parents) study abroad is perceived as an unnecessary hardship and a distraction from the more important task of getting a job immediately after graduation.

To them I’d submit Mike Wetzel ’06, who went to Africa two times and is currently studying at American University in comparative politics with a regional focus in Africa. “What struck me most was

the strength and hope of the Senegalese and Gambians, particularly at the University of The Gambia, where the young men and women I encountered had a true thirst for education, and were overcoming obstacles I could not dream of overcoming myself,” he says, This spring Mike starts an internship with the state department’s Bureau of African Affairs. “My time spent in West Africa opened my eyes to a world previously known only through books and television.”

I talked the tough talk, but I didn’t walk the hardship walk. Instead, I stayed within my own European comfort zone during my first eight years at Juniata. My venture into Africa has changed me more than did my undergraduate study abroad experiences. My life would have been much simpler and more comfortable if I had avoided this African detour, but now I can look every one of my students in the eye and tell them that they must study abroad.

A former student, Adam Stanley ’08, said it best in an e-mail: “The trip opened my eyes not only to the history of Africa, colonialism and the current structure of the world, but also to the responsibility we have as Americans to become aware and informed of this culture and this continent so we better understand the privileges and lifestyles we too often take for granted.” >j<

In a few moments, they would return to the table and listen as Kris Clarkson, Juniata’s dean of students, outlined a proposition to arm Juniata’s security officers. They would vote, making a decision they knew would be controversial whatever the outcome.

For some, arming officers meant doing something decidedly not Juniata.

For others, it was the next logical step—on top of blue call boxes, locking dormitories, emergency text message systems—as it dealt with a changing and encroaching world that affected even the haven on College Hill.

For a long time after the vote, few lifted their gaze from the papers in front of them.

Students posted more than 180 messages to the College’s electronic forums. A petition circulated, asking the board to take more time and seek more opinions before making a decision. But the petition effort fizzled as the days warmed, commencement packed Kennedy for a well-attended but soggy celebration on a rainy Saturday, and the summer arrived. Over those months, the administration enacted what they were charged with doing, and Juniata for the first time purchased firearms with College funds.

As Juniata President Tom Kepple says, “We knew those things would have to happen. We did not anticipate, at that time, all the good and interesting things that would follow.”

Pa. Act 235, the state’s required Lethal Weapons Training for firearms certification. In March, the four part-time officers will also be certified. But the fact of officers now carrying pistols is neither the most obvious nor the most discussed change that has resulted from the decision to arm.

In June, Juniata appointed Tim Launtz ’80, a longtime presence in student life at Juniata both as a coach and residence life director, to a new position merging the office of resident life with that of safety and security called, sensibly enough, the Office of Public Safety and Residential Life.

“I was initially against the idea of arming,” Launtz says. “Being Brethren, I was concerned we were departing from our pacifist stance. At the same time, we were and still are one of the safest college communities in the country—a look at our crime statistics readily shows that.

“But you have to look realistically. As things happened at other colleges and universities, like Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois, I turned 180 degrees. We want our students and staff to know that if we are ever faced with a situation, we can deal with it. It’s about the ability to quickly contain and control a situation, to minimize damage and loss.”

Kris Clarkson also had misgivings—at first. “The more I thought about the things our officers have to deal with—domestic disturbances that spill onto campus, weekend visitors we don’t know, and even the possibilities of what has happened on other campuses—I felt we could not send our people into situations at a possibly threatening disadvantage. We owe it to our officers that they are protected.”

One faculty member, who preferred not to be identified, still has misgivings. “I’m not convinced we’ve thought through the possibilities that exist when firearms are present,” he says. “Some faculty feel the same way, and they pretty much stayed out of the debate in the spring because they felt this was a fait accompli. We seem as an institution to have just said, OK. That’s that.”

President Kepple points out that in addition to hosting open forums on the topic, the College’s working group consulted with several other colleges and professionals. “It made a host of recommendations in addition to arming,” Kepple says. “Emergency preparation, a campus-wide warning system, different counseling and intervention strategies—all of which led

us to think about an integrated, progressive model for public safety and security.”

What exactly is an integrative and progressive model for public safety?

Start with having residence life and security work together. Focus security on educational and community roles.

To that end, all shifts now have full patrols.

Previously, some afternoon and evening patrols had only one officer—making it difficult to accomplish security tasks while also patrolling and getting to know the campus. Officers did not have the freedom to engage with the community the way they do now.

Officer Tim Hughes has to engage with guests, students, and visitors more often than people might expect, as Juniata’s officers are now often the face of the College.

“Parents are always asking, now tell me, what’s it really like around here? Do kids drink too much? What REALLY happens?” Hughes says, “It’s nice to be able to tell them that the place really is safe, and that we have the tools and the training to keep it that way.”

Now, patrol supervisors have greater autonomy.

Launtz expects people to patrol based on experience. The model is less routine, more organic—just the way most people think it should be.

“We’re more community-oriented than we have been, toward students, staff, and visitors,” Launtz says.

“We’re pursuing a policing model that is relationshiporiented.” With the officers much more present on foot and on bicycles, encouraged to engage with people, there is more conversation.

Because Launtz works with the resident assistants and directors, he also is aware of the issues related to dorm living. His staff collaborate with student services, too. Previously, Rocco Panosetti had supervised patrol operations while managing any investigative tasks as well as public safety issues. In the new model, Launtz handles public safety while Panosetti, still a patrol supervisor, now is in charge of campus investigations—something he needed last semester.

Two incidents demanded Panosetti’s attention. The first dealt with an unknown young man who showed up at a room in Sunderland, told the young woman he was there to fix her roommate’s computer, and left with the machine for an hour. He returned it, then disappeared. No rationale has since been discovered, and nothing was apparently wrong with the computer.

The same weekend, near East Houses, a man in his 30s driving a black SUV with obscured license plates slowed down and asked a group of women if they wanted to get into his vehicle to “go party.” He claimed to be a freshman, but no one recognized him.

After both incidents, Launtz’s office sent an e-mail to campus, advising caution and sharing the details of what had happened. Launtz says, “Both incidents may well be harmless, but they were odd for here. No one here knew the people involved. Those kind of things just don’t typically happen, so we figured it was best to keep everyone informed.”

Information is the cornerstone to the progressive model. The College installed warning sirens at both ends of campus, operable from any phone keypad by an officer.

The College also maintains an emergency Web page (www. jcalert.info), conducts emergency preparedness exercises and fire drills, and has a state-of-the-art emergency text messaging system. By the summer, Juniata will have a wireless PA system to alert the campus as well. In fact, the upgrades over the last few years are too numerous to list here. Launtz welcomes those interested to check out his office’s Web page (see link below.)

Improvements did not come without some resistance—something of a tradition at Juniata.

According to RA Rebecca DeHass ’09, Juniata’s upperclassmen can spot the freshmen because they are the first class to wear their IDs constantly.

have locked dorms. They saw the locks at other places they’d visit, and wondered why we didn’t have locks.”

DeHass’ comments echo a sentiment many have noticed, that parents expecting security measures on college campuses often were surprised—and not always pleasantly—that Juniata had not (until recently) pursued similar policies.

Hughes says over the years parents had challenged him, asking, “Why aren’t you armed?” Last fall, for the first time, he didn’t get any questions.

Hughes also notes that people had assumptions about security even before the arming measure. A few years ago a young woman was being pestered by a boyfriend. He had made several uncomfortable calls to her, and she was worried that he would show up on campus. She had come to the security office in Ellis and the staff encouraged her to call her parents and let them know she was working with security.

“She said to them, ‘I’m okay, I’m safe. I am standing here in the police office between two armed officers,’” Hughes says. “It surprised both of us. But that was just the expectation. We looked like police officers, acted like police officers. There was the expectation we were armed.”

Launtz defines the role of the new Office of Public Safety and Security: all that stands between us and collapse. “We handle lost keys and IDs, a parent who hasn’t talked with a son or daughter in a while and can’t find them, a missing roommate, plenty of jumping car batteries, gas-leak calls, fire notices, or just someone to talk to. We see it holistically—guarding, talking, helping, teaching—dealing with all that life outside the classroom.”

Launtz says the officers are also educators. “It’s a position inherent in guarding,” Launtz says. “We have great emphasis on that now. These guys have a lot of experience and knowledge, and we are getting better at sharing it.”

Hughes says, “The new uniforms, and the new emphasis on public safety, have made us more approachable—which is good,” he says. “Students are recognizing the approach and it’s the friendliest it’s been in my 13 years here.” >j<

A few years ago, no blue-lighted emergency call boxes existed on campus. When the campus community learned of plans to install boxes, a cry went up. The boxes went in anyhow. Last academic year, the dormitories were locked— making Juniata one of the last colleges in the country to do so. While there were concerns about threatening the community feel of campus, there is no indication that the community ideal has lessened—particularly since all students can access any dorm using their ID card. It is only non-students who cannot.

Even locking the dorms comes with its own asterisk.

When Halloween rolled around and students made plans for their traditional open house for community kids and decorated halls replete with balloon ghosts, black lights, and bead curtains, the Juniata Activities Board realized that the doors would be locked. How would community members, many of whom had kids who look forward to dorm trick-or-treating every year, react to that tradition being lost, in this town where Halloween house-lighting schemes in some neighborhoods rival Christmas displays?

Solution: JAB members held the doors. Launtz sent extra res-life employees down to the dorms to help out.

Crisis averted.

Rebecca DeHass ’09 has worked as a resident assistant for the last three years, meaning she has seen the effects (or lack of discernible effect) on students of the recent spate of security efforts. When the dorms were first locked, she often had to come down to let people in who had forgotten their Gold Card (the campus ID).

“When I was a freshman, there was no reason to carry the card. Now, with the locked dorms, you always need it.

Upperclassmen aren’t used to that,” she says. “In fact, the easiest way to spot a freshman is that they wear their Gold Cards around their necks.”

She said upperclassmen have noted that they might feel less safe, wondering why there was a reason to start locking doors.

But she also notes that new students find it normal. “When I was a tour guide,” she says, “parents always found it weird that we did not

Dressed in hoodies, baseball hats, jeans and carrying backpacks, the small band of students emerge from an overgrown field as though sprouting from the soil itself, their figures barely discernible to observers almost a mile away on Cemetery Ridge in the Gettysburg National Military Park.

The group trudges the route of the glorious but doomed Pickettâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Charge, in which 14,000 Confederate troops under the command of Gen. George Pickett attacked the center line of the Union Army in the hope of overwhelming the exhausted solders.

The students walk the battlefield on a crisp morning in October and the stillness of the moment is broken only by the sounds of cars

passing by on a road now bisecting the battleground. Seven score and five years ago, on a blazing hot July 3, the Confederate forces led by Pickett grimly marched into the teeth of an artillery barrage that could be heard in Pittsburgh. As the soldiers came closer, they moved forward under withering rifle fire from forces barricaded on Cemetery Ridge.

The students are under no such hardships, but they respect the history of this hallowed ground.

At the fence line below Cemetery Ridge, where the bulk of Pickett’s force, some 7,000 men, were killed, a tiny woman, dressed in jeans, plaid sneakers and holding a sheaf of notes, starts her lecture. Annabelle Correia ’10, of Somerville, Mass., describes the carnage and glory in vivid terms made memorable by her broad Boston accent. “I wanted to concentrate on the desperation of the battle and I wanted to make sure I mentioned my great-grandmother’s uncle, who died in Pickett’s Charge fighting for the 48th Alabama. We’re

Rachel Gressick ’11, of Munster, Pa., holds the class spellbound at Devil’s Den as she quotes a historian’s description of the famous killing ground as “a wild, rocky labyrinth.” Standing in a section of field called The Slaughter Pen, Gressick directs her talk toward the downsloping, boulder-strewn field known as The Valley of Death. She effortlessly conjures the images of Union artillerymen lugging ammunition to an isolated cannon battery while directing attention to landmarks that make the strategy of the battle clearer.

“There are people in class that know the first, last and middle name of every commander of the Army of the Potomac, but then again there are those who came into it not knowing anything,” says Gressick, who interned with the U.S. Park Service last summer at the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site. “Having a mix of personalities and approaches to interpreting the battle keeps the day interesting.”

Tuten, who is happy to cede center stage to other voices, also tries to make sure all sides of the war are addressed when each talk ends. He often adds a few insights of historical memory after each speaker. “I have a lot of fun teaching this course because I’m Southern and 90 percent of the students are not,” says the native of South Carolina. “It allows me to get them to think differently about the war, and maybe even provoke them in some ways.”

“Jim gave us the opportunity to connect with the site from a historical perspective, but we were also able to connect with the battlefield in our own way and create meanings for ourselves,” says Jaime Boyle ’00, a former Civil War and Reconstruction student who is now a ranger-interpreter for the National Park Service at the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington, D.C. “We were able to make personal connections with what we read in the history books and learned in class.”

The field trip is fun for the students but there also are moments of somber reflection, particularly as they hear of desperate battles like the audacious bayonet charge of the 20th Maine at Little Round Top or the hand-to-hand fighting as Pickett’s soldiers reached Cemetery

as varied as the military stratagems used over the three days of battle, a teaching approach that is—to lapse into military parlance—standard operation procedure in the College’s history department.

For Civil War and Reconstruction, Tuten used, in addition to the field trip, other methods to give students glimpses into the past. The class attended a campus lecture on Abraham Lincoln’s southern roots (Lincoln’s grandfather had a homestead in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley)

by Phillip Stone, president of Bridgewater College and a Lincoln scholar. Civil War re-enactor Karl Lang ’75, whose real-life job is tax collector for Huntingdon, talked to the students in full dress uniform, including rifle, demonstrating what soldiers carried with them and the regimented way they loaded and shot their weapons. Lang also taught them to march in a vacant lot opposite the history department offices, a lesson that was particularly resonant for Steven Crow ’09, of Middletown, Pa., who realized the simple act of keeping in step while walking with classmates gives students a taste of the discipline required to walk into cannon and rifle fire. “It was one thing to do that with 20 kids but when we got to the battlefield and realized there were 60,000 soldiers marching during the battle, you just say ‘Holy Crap!’ It was amazing.” >j<

Medical practice in 21st century Huntingdon isn’t all like Grey’s Anatomy.

Here in a smalltown setting, we often see health care practiced at a slower, sometimes more personal pace. While slower and more personal can be good, rural health care also has its challenges. Juniata is working with local health care practitioners to address these challenges in an innovative way—while adding to opportunities for Juniata students.

The College has introduced two new courses, Issues in Rural Health Care and Rotations in Rural Health Care, which allow students to hear about and experience first-hand the satisfactions and challenges of rural health care. The courses have two missions.

First, students looking at medical schools are encouraged to consider eventually returning to Huntingdon to practice. Secondly, the model of health care has been expanded to include integrative medicine, an emerging field (see sidebar).

Issues in Rural Health Care is a one-hour weekly course open to an unlimited number of students, in which practitioners talk about their personal and educational backgrounds and about the pros and cons of practicing in Huntingdon.

A more specialized course, Rotations in Rural Health Care, is open to a smaller number of pre-professional students, who shadow the practitioners. The idea is to expose students to the integrative model of health care and enable them to gain a deeper understanding of how their chosen career fits into the health care system. It also introduces students to professional and personal issues involved in providing health care in a rural community. If former Juniata students decide to return to Huntingdon as medical professionals, then the course will have come full circle.

The 30 students who enrolled in Issues in Rural Health Care heard presentations by the CEO of J.C. Blair Hospital; physicians in family practice, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and

Integrative Medicine Explained

Integrative medicine combines mainstream medical therapies and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies for which there is evidence of safety and effectiveness. The focus of CAM is on wellness and non-toxic management of chronic conditions. Examples include yoga, massage, herbal therapy, or acupuncture. The National Institutes of Health and top academic medical centers, including Harvard, Stanford, and the University of Pennsylvania, are implementing initiatives in integrative medicine. Juniata is one of the few colleges in the forefront of this new model of health care.

podiatric medicine; an audiologist; an optometrist; a physical therapist; a holistic dentist; a yoga teacher; an herbalist; a wellness consultant; a Reiki practitioner; a life coach; and a medical social worker.

“I realize how well this course can prepare pre-medical students for interviews by providing them with knowledge about the health care system, the spectrum of health care practices, and how medicine is practiced,” says Ashli Gamber ’08.

The 12 students enrolled in the Rotations course were required to observe 10 practices, including at least three from alternative medical practitioners, and complete a community service project through the hospital. In addition, students kept a journal of their experiences and wrote an abstract of two articles from the literature each week on health issues and practices pertaining to their rotations

rapidly evolving health care system,” says Travis Hull ’09, of Summerhill, Pa. “It also forced me to recognize a broader field of health care that exists beyond the limits of traditional western medicine and needs to be seriously considered by future health care professionals.”

The rural health care courses also exemplify a cooperative vision between the College and the community.

Everybody knows medical professionals are busy, but Huntingdon’s medical community took the time to work with Juniata to create these new opportunities. The new courses grew out of a chain of events that began with an informal conversation between Dr. Maria Pettinger, director of radiology at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, and her predecessor, Dr. Richard Di Donato, who had been involved with the College’s Topics in Medicine course. This course, which ran from 1990 to 2001, gave students a chance to do formal rotations in different departments of the hospital.

Both doctors thought the time was right to revive this course.

Pettinger met with biologist Debra Kirchhof-Glazier, director of the health professions program, to see if they could resuscitate a program that had energized both students and doctors. Both agreed that students should explore the gamut of options in health care, regardless of the area of health care they intend to pursue, since health care consumers are increasingly using complementary and alternative therapies and evidence is mounting that several of these options are effective in promoting health and healing. “For example, I get better mammograms from patients whose swelling has been relieved by lymph massage,” says Dr. Pettinger.

The College has a virtual gold mine of excellent, committed pre-professional students, many of whom express the desire to practice rural medicine and many of whom come to love Huntingdon. It made sense to cultivate a long-term connection. “Practicing in rural communities presents unique challenges that can best be taught by those working in this environment,” said Kevin Calhoun, who If former Juniata recently left as the students decide to CEO of J.C. Bringing Students Back

The vision that fueled these courses has already begun to be realized beyond the classroom. Students Anthony Willis ’08 and Kayla Thompson ’09, were inspired to approach the Hospital Board with a proposal for a J.C. Blair Returning Physician Initiative.

The Board has approved the proposal, which will provide a Juniata student who returns to Huntingdon after completing their medical residency with $25,000 a year toward repayment of their loans, renewable for up to five years.

Anthony Willis says, “It’s a win-win situation. Students get a better feel and understanding of the hospital, while the hospital gets the attention of exceptional future physicians.” Pre-dental student Brent Kanar ’08 adds, “This course helped me realize that working in a rural health setting would provide me with the most gratifying experience as a health professional.”

The students involved in the program made excellent connections with mentors. Some even discovered or changed their career plans in health care based on the experience. Jon Skoner ’09, of Pittsburgh, discovered his interest in optometry as a result of these courses. “It’s hard to imagine that a student inspired to go into a health professions career and taking this course would not form or modify their previous beliefs of the diversity of the health care field,” he says. “These courses helped me to solidify my understanding of the health care setting and situation that professionals are exposed to in small rural areas.”

This year, the rural health care courses will focus on comparing and contrasting the different professions. The rotations course will also expand from one to two credits and will include a field trip to Windber Medical Center, a nearby integrative medical facility.

We hope these courses will continue to have a positive impact on students and on health care in Huntingdon and beyond. As one of the students in the Issues course said, “This is a wonderful program that accomplishes something few courses can: it has a direct impact on students outside of the classroom. Juniata Freshman Carries on Family Legacy with Independent 529 Plan

Julie Cramer ’12 (center) has always thought it was her destiny to attend Juniata. Thanks to her use of the Independent 529 Plan, her destiny became a reality.

at least three years before redemption, the 2006 academic year was the first time that redemption was possible, explained Nancy Farmer, Independent 529 Plan president.

Ms. Farmer points out that parents need not pay for an entire year in advance to take advantage of Independent 529 Plan. Because every family’s need is different, Independent 529 Plan offers a number of ways to participate—from pre-paying the full cost of several years to paying a set amount each month. You can also start small by contributing as little as $25 a month as long as a minimum of $500 is accumulated within two years.

“In fact, families will pay slightly less than current tuition because each of the participating colleges and universities in Independent 529 Plan discounts the tuition certificates by at least one-half of one percent per year,” says Farmer.

in 1963 with a degree in history and later became a lawyer. Julie had originally intended to enter Juniata as a theater POE, but after taking a biology class at a local community college as a high school senior, a new interest grew.

“I loved finding out how everything works so delicately together to create a living organism,” says the newly declared biology POE. “And I realized somewhere along the way that what I was learning was something I would be happy spending my life doing.”

For John and his wife, Kay, choosing the right college for Julie was one thing, but planning for financing for college was another. Thankfully, the Cramers, who live in Liverpool, Pa., started planning in 2003, when Julie was 13 years old. John was serving on Juniata’s Board of Trustees when Tom Kepple, the president of Juniata, brought to his attention a new college savings program called Independent 529 Plan.

Independent 529 Plan sparked John’s interest because it allowed him to pre-pay tuition for future redemption at any of the 274 participating private colleges and universities, including Juniata. Kepple was one of the founders of Independent 529 Plan, and played a key role in Juniata’s decision to participate.

Julie is the first Independent 529 Plan redemption for Juniata. John said he chose to apply a substantial part of his Independent 529 Plan fund to Julie’s freshman year and use the remaining portion over the course of her college career.

“Based on the history of tuition increases, Independent 529 Plan offered a better return than CDs and less risk than putting college funds into a mutual fund,” John said. “It paid off in the current down market.

No tuition was lost, while other investments and 529 plans are down 20 percent or more.”

Emil. Perhaps it was foreordained that the youngest member of the family would grow up with a fascination for all things European and German.

“My grandfather’s name was Emil and after six kids, I think my mother finally gave in and allowed my Dad to name me after him,” says Emil Nagengast. “I always felt a strong German identity and I think that’s what drove me to study European history and politics. That’s part of the reason my son’s name is Otto, to give him a connection to place that is far away.”

Emil’s own story begins in a place not so far away, a place where William Nagengast could settle his family, a place where a man could find a great job helping to build General Motors tanks for the Department of Defense, a place called Detroit.

Emil grew up in the suburb of Bloomfield Hills, where he threw himself into sports and reading books.

Lots of books. Lots of history books—on the French and Indian War, the Civil War, colonial history. “It was always military history. In fact, I didn’t know there were other kinds of history until I went to college,” he says, laughing.

A deep interest in German history emerged when Emil and his father would watch history documentaries on television, particularly the World at War series produced in the 1970s by the BBC. “I remember watching Hitler speak in those episodes and wondering what he was saying to get that reaction from the audience,” Emil recalls.

The Sturm und Drang of German history continued to pull Emil in when he went off to Middlebury College in 1980 and found an opportunity to study abroad at the University of Mainz. At the first available opportunity, he traveled to Berlin where he saw the imposing Berlin Wall. “It was the embodiment of that ideological clash of East and West,” he says.

Energized by his visit to Germany and fascinated by the workings of a totalitarian regime, Emil graduated in 1984 and immediately went to work for General Motors. Although filmmaker Michael Moore might suggest that was a natural transition, Emil hired on at the massive automaker to earn money to travel. He worked as a draftsman, where, among other highlights, he designed the trunk locking mechanism for the Pontiac Fiero.

Emil Nagengast’s restless search for understanding order in the messy world of politics comes in handy in managing the schedules of students, drivers and itineraries in The Gambia.

he established a somewhat fearsome reputation as a demanding professor, although that image has waned over the years. “I still stick it to the freshmen because I want them to know they’re getting their money’s worth in the introductory courses,” he says. “So I have an image as some kind of monster, but really the emperor has no clothes. I don’t grade particularly hard or assign six term papers.”

While finding his teaching style, he sponsored the College’s Model UN club and found himself being pulled in a new direction—toward Africa.

Through the Model UN, Emil became intrigued with the emerging African Union. Pushed by international students Wossie Mazengia ’01 and Martin Ewi ’99, Emil applied for a sabbatical in 2003 and traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to study the African Union firsthand.

Emil still teaches European politics, but he has incorporated his new interest in African politics into his courseload. Most colleges would frown on a professor switching interests in mid-career, but Emil says Juniata is just as flexible with its faculty’s interests as it is with the student body.

“I have friends at other universities that cannot believe the freedom and support we have here,” Emil says. “The same thing that got me excited about European politics—that life and death aspect—is now seen in African politics, where people are truly dealing with life and death issues. I don’t know what I will do if Africa becomes stable politically—maybe study Mongolia.” >j<

From 1985 to 1987 he alternated working, all while living at the family home, with travel to Middlebury College to study Russian and to the Soviet Union to study Russian at the Krasnodar Language Institute. Eventually, his mother gently suggested he try graduate school. “I applied to the University of Michigan, not realizing how demanding graduate school was and was rejected. I got serious, cleaned up my application and ended up at the University of Kansas,” he says.

He didn’t stay long. He received a scholarship from the East German government and spent 1988 and 1989 in Leipzig, East Germany at Karl Marx University. “The next summer, the Wall came down,” he says.

After earning his master’s back in Kansas, he entered the University of Pittsburgh doctoral program in 1990 and decided to study the East German-Soviet Union relations. That topic disappeared when East Germany dissolved. He then decided to concentrate on Soviet politics, but by 1991 the Soviet Union ceased to exist.

“I came within a whisker of chucking it all to go work in the auto industry,” he says. “I finally settled on Germany’s relationships with Eastern European nations as my specialization. The lesson there is, study what you are truly passionate about.”

So What?

Juniata has its chemistry students take organic chemistry first, which is the opposite of most colleges and universities. Reingold explains why.

“Organic is the chemistry most clearly relevant to biology, and most of general chemistry is not necessary to understand organic, so we teach organic first and general chemistry second. Then in the junior year, the chemistry students come back and take another organic chemistry course. As a faculty, we get two passes at teaching our students organic, and most faculties get just one. The attrition rate is about the same for both methods, but for Juniata the attrition happens sooner. If science is not for you, it’s better to find out as a freshman.”

James Borgardt, associate professor of physics, was an invited speaker at “The Future of Nuclear Weapons: Abolition in the Post-Bush Era” conference at the Center on Terrorism at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in January. And then, in this publication, we’d distill all that achievement into a line next to their name—often a line that revealed little beyond a bare-bones title.

Starting with this issue, we’re trying something new. Along with the line about their accomplishment, we’ve asked a few people, “So what?”

We’re not trying to be smart or snarky, but to learn a little more about why and about the impact of their work. Read on—

Celia Cook-Huffman, Burkholder Professor of Conflict

Resolution, published “The Role of Identity In Conflict” in the book A Handbook of Conflict Analysis and Resolution and wrote the entry for “Gender and Conflict” entry in the International Encyclopedia of Peace and the entry for “Conflict Resolution” in the Encyclopedia of Social Problems.

So What?

Asked to contribute an article for the Handbook, Cook-Huffman explains why it’s important to say yes. “(Conflict resolution) is growing and developing and scholars are still synthesizing what constitutes or merits inclusion in the field. To be asked to write an article for this is a recognition of my own contributions to the field and a chance to be included with the leading scholars in the field and have my own work be read and discussed.”

She also delivered the keynote address “Imagining Peace Across the Disciplines” at the Active Learning Conference at Nassau Community College in March 2008. She delivered an invited lecture “Teaching Conflict Resolution” and “Managing Conflict in Groups” at the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences in Kalamassery, India in June.

Eiichiro Ochiai, professor emeritus of chemistry, published Bioinorganic Chemistry, a Survey through Academic Press/Elsevier.

Dennis Plane, assistant professor of politics, and a co-author published “Ideology and Representation in the U.S. Senate: Roll Calls v. Constituent Assessments” in the Journal of Legislative Studies 2007. He also published the article, “Trust in Government,” in the American National Election Studies Pilot Study Report.

Deborah Roney, assistant professor of English and director of Language in Motion, was elected co-president of the American Association of University Women for Pennsylvania.

Russell Shelley, Elma Stine Heckler Associate Professor of Music, was a guest conductor for two regional high school choral festivals held in Independence, Mo. in October and in Bradenton, Fla. in January. He also conducted the Keystone

Christian Education Association’s high school All-State choir in the Capitol Rotunda in November.

Jack Troy, associate professor emeritus of art, taught various workshops for ceramic artists at Touchstone Center for the Crafts, Farmington, Pa.; The Clay Studio in Missoula, Mont.; University of Montana, Missoula; Alison Palmer Studio, Kent, Conn.; Miss Porter’s School, Farmington, Conn.; and Valley Regional High School, Deep River, Conn. Sarah Worley ’00, instructor in communication, Nathan Wagoner, digital media specialist, Kevin Ott ’97, Ryan Wetzel ’06 and Andy Dudash, head of reference services, received a Bronze Telly Award in the Social Issues Category for the documentary Junk, which documented the annual tradition of Junk Week in Huntingdon. The Telly Awards honor local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions, and work created for the Web.

Patricia Weaver, Dana Professor of Accounting, Randy Rosenberger, associate professor of management, and Dominick Peruso, associate professor of accounting, consulted for the Internal Revenue Service to help the service devise an appropriate test to qualify job candidates.

How did the IRS assignment come about?

Randy Rosenberger: The IRS wants a screening device that screens, but doesn’t screen everyone. After all, they want to hire the best applicants.

Getting the level of difficulty just right was the most interesting and difficult part of the assignment.

RR: Hands-on practice for us provides a connection to the business world that keeps us in touch with what is going on and informs what we bring into the classroom. Finding a Mission of Service Takes Alumnus on African Career

Although receiving a D+ in a chemistry course helped push him in the right direction, Orth-Moore took his degree in international politics and boldfaced the international. He has spent much of his adult life in Africa, striving to improve living and working conditions both in tiny villages and teeming capital cities, and sees the lessons learned at Juniata as the guiding force in his career.

“A liberal arts education means you get exposed to a lot of different things and at Juniata they push you into areas that might not be as comfortable as you would like,” says David, who lives in Nairobi, Kenya, as a regional director in charge of development efforts in east Africa for Catholic Relief Services. “The College finds ways to help students broaden their horizons. Having a real-life experience while you’re in college helps express who you are.”

Ironically, David’s first international experience was about as far from Africa as you can get—Humberside College in decidedly non-tropical, non-exotic England.

But his year abroad whetted his appetite for international work. As he neared graduation, David closely followed the famine in Ethiopia and the worldwide 44

Seeing a world beyond the prism of your own experience is so much a part of Juniata’s mission that it should be embossed on our diplomas. That idea lodged in the character of David Orth-Moore ’85, who left his home in Reading, Pa., to study at Juniata and departed campus dedicated to becoming a citizen of the world.

David Orth-Moore credits Juniata with inspiring his dedication to service. He took an early experience in Senegal in the Peace Corps and returned to Africa as a worker for Catholic Relief Services. With brief respites for education and rejuvenation, David and now his family have lived and worked in a variety of African countries. At left, David helps dedicate a community water project.

the largest American relief organizations. The agency has a $630 million budget and has programs or outreach in 100 countries. His first posting, in 1990 was Monrovia, Liberia, which was in the middle of a violent civil war. “It was an exciting time, we had no running water, no electricity, but we did a lot of relief work and I think it was then that I made up my mind that I wanted to do this work,” he recalls.

Subsequent postings took David and a growing family (the couple now has four children, Cassidy, Shea, Jordan David, and Tessa) to Togo and Ethiopia, where David oversaw a huge relief program. However, even the challenges and thrills of living in Africa can wear a bit thin, so the Orth-Moores returned to the United States, working first at CRS’s headquarters in Baltimore, Md., and then taking a job in Albuquerque, N.M., with Catholic Charities. (“The odd thing is that I’m not Catholic,” he says.)

However, as writers such as Isak Dinesen and Alexandra Fuller have pointed out, the experience of Africa is a hard thing to shake, so the family packed up again in 2002 as David accepted a post in Ghana, supervising a $15 million program for more than 250,000 schoolchildren. “In many rural communities you cannot say only one thing is missing.

The people are affected by many issues that are interrelated,” he says.

David, who returned to Ethiopia in 2005, stayed until his recent promotion to regional director in Kenya in 2008.

Today he is regional director for east Africa charged with administering programs in six countries. He credits his love of service and dedication to international issues to such Juniata faculty as Robert Wagoner, professor emeritus of philosophy, and the late Craig Baxter, professor of politics.

Such mentors ignited a love of service in David that has yet to be extinguished, he says, “They awakened in me a consciousness that we had a responsibility as Americans that we should help others.” >j< 45

relief efforts made famous by rocker Bob Geldof ’s LiveAid concerts and the song, “We Are the World”. Inspired by the relief project, he joined the Peace Corps as a community development volunteer in Senegal (Senegal is the West African nation surrounding The Gambia, where Juniata has established an international program).

“They drop you off in a village and it’s up to you to figure out what (the village) needs,” he says of Miname, the Senegalese village where he lived. “They needed water, so one of the first things we did was dig a well five feet in diameter and 180 feet deep. After that I helped form a water committee so the villagers could manage that resource.

“By the end of that first year, you find out if you like it or you don’t,” David recalls. “I did.”

Although he was too busy to really have an epiphany, David soon realized the broad-based education he gained at Juniata was directly applicable to the challenges he dealt with daily in Africa. He also realized he loved this work.

“When I left the Peace Corps I applied for an internship with Catholic Relief Services in Senegal.

I managed work projects across the country,” he explains.

Working on a larger scale made him realize he needed to broaden his skills, so he returned to the United States to earn a master’s degree in 1990 at American University. “It’s not enough to “It’s not want to do good, you have to be enough to effective,” David says.

She grew up volunteering at the theatre and served as the longtime executive secretary of the Blair County Arts Foundation.

Her claim to fame is outbidding movie star Debbie Reynolds for a chandelier, which proudly hangs in the Mishler Theatre in Altoona, Pa. Eleanore was inducted into the Blair County Arts Hall of Fame in 2003.

Harold resides in the Health Care Center of Brethren Village and continues to be an avid reader. Harold passed away Nov. 3, 2008. His obituary will run in the spring/summer magazine.

Thomas M. Hoover

was featured in the August 2008 issue of Hot Rod magazine in the “In Their Own Words” section, where an editor asks “the sport’s greatest legends” to comment on a stack of historic photos from the magazine’s archives. Tom, a former engineer for Chrysler, helped develop the 426 Chrysler Hemi engine, which was used in NASCAR racers, dragsters, funny cars and other applications.

Lawrence W. Davis

was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal by the American College of Radiology. Dr. Barry Pressman, president of the 2008 Board of Chancellors, said, “Dr. Davis has served countless patients through his devotion to care, effective treatment, and advancing the discipline of radiation oncology.”

Larry is professor and former chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. Carol (Olbrich) Geary

and husband Jim marked their 49th wedding anniversary with a sky-diving adventure inspired by their neighbor and the movie The Bucket List. They described the experience as peaceful.

Besides sky diving, the couple has gone swimming near the Arctic Circle, mountain climbing near Machu Picchu, stayed at the Ice Palaces in Quebec and in Colorado, and recently went zip-lining, which is a means of traversing via handheld pulley and a cable suspended on an incline.

Nancy (Nevin) Pinkerton

and husband James celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 24, 2008. Their celebration was Dec. 28 through Jan. 4 when they took their children and grandchildren on a Caribbean cruise.

Ronald R. Blanck

was appointed as a new member and chair of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) Board of Regents

by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. He currently serves as vice chairman and partner of Martin, Blanck & Associates.

Previously, he served as president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth from 2000 to 2006 and remains a professor in the department of internal medicine. He was also Surgeon General of the Army from 1996 to 2000.

was named professor emeritus by the Pennsylvania College of Technology Board. Robert, a retired professor of mathematics, was also the recipient of the 2007 Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award—the college’s highest level of recognition for a faculty member.

Harriet (Richardson) Michel

retired January 2009 after 20 years of service to the National Minority Supplier Development Council. She became president in September 1988. During Harriet’s tenure, corporate membership nearly quadrupled, and member purchases from minority-owned businesses increased from $10.5 billion to more than $100 billion.

Additionally, under her guidance, the organization expanded their conference from 700 attendees in 1998 to more than 7,000 last year.

was named vice-president of investments of the Mitchell Field office of UBS PaineWebber Inc. in Uniondale, N.Y.

Fred E. Lytle

retired from Purdue University after 40 years in spring 2008. He began a new job at Indigo BioSystems in Carmel, Ind. Fred and wife Joyce moved to Zionsville, Ind. and told everyone they moved south—even if it is only 60 miles!

Glenn O. Hassinger

Church of the Brethren Atlantic Northeast District Conference at Leffler Chapel, Elizabethtown College on Oct. 10, 2008.

Following graduation from seminary, In 1965, Glenn became pastor of Myerstown Church of the Brethren in Myerstown, Pa. where he served until his retirement in 2000. He continues to be active at Myerstown.

Glenn has also served as an interim pastor and moderator upon retirement.

U.S. Air Force and as a teacher before graduating from Gettysburg Seminary. Her son, Jarrod, wrote and directed a comedy on Martin Luther King in New York City last summer.

Janet L. Kauffman

received emeritus status at Eastern Michigan University after 20 years of service. She has helped to establish a national reputation for EMU by shaping the graduate and undergraduate programs in creative writing. Janet has published 10 novels and multiple works of mixed media and short stories. She has received two Pushcart Prizes for short stories and poetry and was a finalist for the PEN/ Faulkner Award.

Maxine E. Phillips

attended, as a Juniata delegate, the presidential inauguration of Debora Spar at Barnard College on October 23, 2008 in New York N.Y.

David Pysnik

was awarded the 2008 citizen of the year by the Sidney Chamber of Commerce in Sidney, N.Y. David has worked as a high school teacher for 36 years, inspiring students and impacting the region. He developed a mobile science lab for the school and donated the prize for a national academic award to help set up the Sidney astronomical observatory.

returned to the United States in July 2008 after serving more than two years in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua as a small business volunteer. She had an educational experience and enjoyed meeting and getting to know other Peace Corps volunteers.

Maryelise (Suffern) Lamet

and husband Sterling welcomed their first grandchild, Eva Starr Elise Corbett, on Sept. 11, 2007.

Robert K. Monti

and wife Pam are excited about relocating to southern Delaware.

Robert has taken a new position as human resource manager at INVISTA, one of the world’s largest integrated fibers and polymers businesses. The company owns more than 700 unique pending or granted U.S. patents, including some recognizable trademarks as Coolmax, Dacron, Lycra and Stainmaster. Robert and Pam are also celebrating the birth of their second grandson.

Ronald K. Schilling

was forced to retire by federal age discrimination from U.S. Airways, where he spent 18 years in the flight training department and held the director of flight training and standards position for six years. To prevent him from alphabetizing the spice rack and arranging the pantry goods into similar-sized boxes and cans, and

generally getting into wife Pam’s way, Ron formed a consulting company. In March 2008, he returned from Saudi Arabia after spending 13 months as an integral player in the start-up of the country’s third airline, Sama Airlines. So, until the next contract, Ron will be putting the thyme before the turmeric but after the tarragon.

retired from the state of New Jersey after a career as a forensic scientist for 32 years. He was the manager of the Office of Forensic Sciences Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for the past five years. He is looking for his next career in a state or country that is warmer than New Jersey. His daughter, Ashley, graduated from the University of Maryland—College Park with a degree in government and criminal justice. His daughter, Kym, graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in journalism, and son Ted graduated from Monmouth University with a degree in computer science.

is on a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship for a year in Switzerland.

Edward J. Richards

is a visually impaired service team coordinator for the Department of Veteran Affairs. In summer 2008, he was invited by the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes and the U.S. Paralympics Committee to work with six traumatic, brain—injured soldiers, who are currently on active duty status at Walter Reed Medical Center, and 15 former soldiers, now blind, to teach them adaptive sports. The training was conducted at Colorado College and the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Sarah (Young) Fisher

Sarah is president of Kuntz Lesher Capital, a fee-only registered investment-advisory firm in Lancaster, Pa. She wrote four books about personal finance, including The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Personal Finance in Your 20s and 30s. She also is a columnist for Consumer Digest magazine.

Steven J. Norris

was inducted into the Warren County Sports Hall of Fame. He began his athletic career in Huntingdon, Pa., where he pitched his team to the state finals in the 1967 VFW Teener League tournament and guided the Huntingdon Area High School Bearcats to a 9-1 season as a quarterback. At Juniata he was a split end on the 1973 football squad that lost to Denison University in the first Division III Championship in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. He has been a teacher in Warren County for the past 33 years where he had two unbeaten seasons while coaching football and girls’ basketball. He is an avid runner competing in more than 160 races and a certified PIAA

official for football and basketball.

He also competes in “drug free” body building, in which he won the Masters Division at age 42 and finished second in the Pennsylvania Drug Free Body Building Competition at the age of 53.

Robert N. Trigiano

published his sixth and seventh books this year. Plant Pathology Concepts and Laboratory Exercises Second Edition was published in January and Plant Propagation Concepts and Laboratory Exercise was published in June. Also, Bob, his son Andrew, age 14, and others published a teaching paper in HortTechnology in January 2008.

The publication started as a seventh grade science project, called “Two Simple and Inexpensive Laboratory Exercises for Teaching Agarose Gel Electrophoresis and DNA Fingerprinting.” Andrew is the youngest author to ever publish in one of the primary journals of the professional society American Society for Horticultural Science.

His picture appeared on the cover of the issue HortTechnology 18 (1): 177-188.

Cynthia (Gilbert) Clarke

retired as director of institutional research at Juniata. She now works part-time as director of enrollment data management to coordinate enrollment research and to manage the systems required to support the enrollment initiatives of the College.

was awarded as one of the 2008 Best 50 Women in Business for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by the Department of Economic Development. The presentation was held at the Harrisburg Hilton in Harrisburg, Pa., followed by a reception at the Governors Mansion. The late Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll presented the recipients with their awards. Sarah and others were profiled in the Central Penn Business Journal, Eastern Pennsylvania Business Journal, Northeast Pennsylvania

During our Great Epochs “field trip” to study the Baroque epoch and the Habsburgs, 31 alumni and friends enjoyed AustroHungarian Empire lessons from former history teacher Lynne Smires Gale ’72, with input from Betty Ann Cherry, professor emeritus of history, and local guides. Four days in Vienna included a city tour, museums, the Lipizzaner Stallions, Mozart/Strauss concerts, Melk Abbey, Schoenbrunn Palace and traditional music and food. En route to Budapest, we stopped in Bratislava for city and castle tours. In Budapest, we rode the oldest subway in continental Europe, enjoyed beautiful cityscapes, a city tour, and a tour and ballet at the Opera House. An excursion took us to the Habsburg castle at Gödöllő and to Újszász, where Guy ’72 and Jane ’95 Croyle taught in 2005-06, and where we enjoyed a school lunch, town and school tours, meeting local craftswomen, experiencing labda lábtol, and dining with local Hungarians. Our free day in Budapest ended with a folklore dinner.

Twenty of us traveled to Prague for a beer tasting and traditional Czech dinner, as well as tours of the city and the old Jewish Quarter. A dinner cruise on the Vltava (Moldau) River concluded another Great Epochs trip.

On a rainy Saturday morning during Homecoming and Parents Weekend, I pulled myself out of bed to attend a breakfast scheduled as an opportunity for alumni, parents and students to meet faculty.

Remembering the effect that rainy Saturday mornings had on me as a student (and reminding myself that some things haven’t changed in the intervening years), I bolstered my resolve with the thought of coffee and headed across campus.

Thoughts of sleeping in were immediately forgotten (along with the coffee) when I arrived to find Sill Board Room filling quickly with faculty, alumni, parents and students. The experience turned out to be representative of other events of the weekend—opportunities to connect or reconnect. I was impressed with the turnout, and I was pleasantly reminded that things that matter most have not changed.

The Juniata experience—with its embracing sense of community steeped in a tradition of service—inspires us as alumni to share our appreciation of lifelong learning with others, and uniquely positions us to reach out to current students. The Alumni Association has been working with the College to encourage and promote initiatives—internships, job shadowing, campus career fairs and individual mentoring—all opportunities for alumni to reach back to students.

The dedication of faculty and staff is a cornerstone of the Juniata experience. Many of us stay in touch with professors or return to campus to seek out continued counsel long after Commencement.

Their stewardship opened doors to a limitless universe of knowledge; they challenged us to think about the world around, within and beyond us, and helped us realize learning did not stop when we left College Hill.

And students are reaching forward. During the fall meeting of the Alumni Council, student leaders and members of the Student Alumni Association joined Council members to discuss ways to build on our foundation of existing connections.

As you think about your Juniata experience, consider connecting in ways that honor the inspiration to learn and grow provided to you by Juniata faculty and staff. Support the Juniata Scholarship Fund; volunteer as an alumni mentor; host an event for students and parents in your region or local area; engage students and other alumni through one of our expanding affinity groups; or share insights during Juniata Career Day, an internship or job shadow experience.

However you connect, remember that even a rainy day can be a perfect day for Juniata…

accepted a new position as director of clearinghouses with Circle Solutions Inc. in McLean, Va. As senior management, he is responsible for 45 employees.

Richard Agyei Frempong

is based in Atlanta, Ga. and Accra, Ghana. After graduating from Juniata he earned his master’s degree in public administration from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate from Pitt’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. In 1984 he joined the faculty of Atlanta University until he resigned in 1987 and set up the American Management Institute, which offers short-term management seminars to middle and upper-level executives and government officials in 122 countries.

Michael M. Molesevich

presented a lecture on environmental ethics, due diligence, and remediation to Juniata students taking the Environmental Methods class taught by environmental scientist Dennis Johnson. Michael formed Molesevich Environmental, LLC in 1987, and was recently elected to Lewisburg Borough Council after earlier terms on council and as mayor of Lewisburg, Pa. His company provides environmental Phase I site assessments, removal of underground storage tanks, remediation of leaking tanks and petroleum spills, and general environmental and energy consulting.

Donald J. Wills

was voted by the Littlestown Area School Board, Littlestown, Pa. as its new superintendent. Don previously worked as the Keystone Central School District Superintendent for more than three years, and has spent 25 years in education.

Janet Bechtel-Manspeaker

has been appointed as the new faculty athletic representative at Cheyney University in Cheyney, Pa. She serves as the liaison between athletics and the faculty to ensure integrity and continuity for NCAA institutional control.

She is also responsible for administering the NCAA coaches exam, coordinating the president’s Breakfast of Champions, serving as chair of the Compliance and Academic Committee and approving policies for missed classes and progress reports.

Richard H. Jager

and son Philip competed in Doylestown’s (Pa.) Red, Blue & White 5K Race. This was one of seven races in the Panera Bread Bucks 5K Series, which raises money for worthy causes.

joined the board of directors for the Professional Athletes Foundation. His career has been devoted to assisting professional athletes in difficult times. He has worked extensively as an athletic trainer during his years at Juniata, and for the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins. The focus of his law practice is for personal injury and workers’ compensation cases. He is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association Ethics Committee, the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Association, the Sports Lawyers Association, and the American Bar Association Sports Law Association. and wife Jennifer opened the Philly Soft Pretzel Factory in State College, Pa. on July 7, 2008. The store includes an open layout showcasing the pretzel baking process. As a customer, you can watch the entire process. There will be traditional soft pretzels, hot dogs, sausage pretzel sandwiches, and flavored versions on the menu.

Peter M. Steiner Jr.

is the senior vice president for commercial lending at First National Bank in Somerset, Pa. He advises people should be aware of where they invest their money in the current economic crisis. He has been a flight ambassador for two years and enjoys teaching Sunday School at Somerset Christian and Missionary Alliance.

John Kuriyan

was elected into the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This is one of the country’s oldest honorary societies and includes many Nobel laureates or winners of Pulitzer Prizes, Oscars, and Grammys. He was also honored with the ASBMB Merck Award for his exceptional achievements in structural biology. John is Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

was awarded the coveted SOFI Gold Award for outstanding organic product at the Fancy Food Show in New York City in June 2008. Marcia and husband Tom own their company, Blackwell’s Organic Gelato, and were presented the award by Jacques Pepin, a noted chef and cookbook author. See story, page 53.

Cynthia M. Duick

accepted a position in November 2008 as marketing consultant for the South Florida Business Center of the Principal Financial Group in Miramar, Fla. She obtained the Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow designation in September 2008.

Margaret E. Evans

was inducted into the 2008 Plum (Pa.) High School Sports Hall of Fame. She was acknowledged for her skills in basketball, volleyball, and track and field at Plum. At Juniata she was an NCAA Division III National Champion in the triple jump. Peggy also appeared in a 30-second USA Football television message titled “I Played.” As the owner of a successful realty business, Peggy uses her experience playing intramural football at Juniata and experience playing wide receiver

for the Philadelphia Liberty Belles (now the Delaware Griffins) to promote how football is more than just a game. Peggy and husband Jeffrey R. Ostrowski ’84 reside in Glen Mills, Pa. Elizabeth (Lewis) Haney

has re-invented herself and is now going by Elizabeth instead of Betsy. She moved from North Carolina to northern Virginia and was married in April 2007 to Charles Haney. Elizabeth’s daughters gained a stepbrother in the process. She has been doing technical writing part-time for several years while pursuing her interest in holistic nutrition.

Elizabeth is a licensed massage therapist and is going back to school to earn a certification in respiratory therapy.

Stephanie Swartz-Janat Makan

returned to Marburg, Germany after graduating from Juniata to earn her master’s degree in American literature and education and her doctorate from the University of Paderborn. She married Mahmud Reza in 1993 and they have two daughters, Tara, 13, and Mona, 12. The family has been living in Mainz since 1998, where Stephanie was offered a faculty position as chairperson for foreign languages. She is responsible for the English curriculum.

R. Scott Stephenson

was appointed as the director of collections and

interpretation by The American Revolution Center in Wayne, Pa. He is responsible for the center’s distinguished collection of objects, artifacts and manuscripts of the American Revolution. He is also developing a plan for the museum and grounds in collaboration with the center’s board of scholars and exhibit design team. Scott thinks that the opportunity to create an institution of national significance is a dream job for anyone in the museum field. 2009 Fall-Winter

Eco-minded Marcia Blackwell ’85, who studied cultural anthropology and archaeology, tries to leave a small footprint, but has done things that have had a large impact.

A few years ago, in her hometown of Long Branch, N.J., a developer wanted to build townhouses—in her neighborhood of single—family homes.

“I called the mayor and told him I didn’t like it,” Marcia says.

“He said, essentially, put your money where your mouth is.” She did, joining the town’s zoning board where, two Mondays each month, she voices her opinion and listens to others in her community.

She and her husband, Tom, live in Long Branch’s first solar house. “The panels are right on the front of the house. People drive by and ask about it.” When it was built, the house’s green status was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting hosted by the mayor.

But the biggest impact she’s had has been, to paraphrase the mayor of Long Branch, to put her money where your mouth is. Marcia Blackwell makes organic gelato.

It, too, started with a comment. Before gelato, Blackwell worked in public relations before discovering her entrepreneurial streak and helping people start businesses. The last one she started, a telecommunications company, was the kind of place where she could bring her dogs to work, wear jeans, and let creativity reign. But telecom took a nose-dive, and the firm tanked.

A friend said, You should really start your own company. You’ve done it for everyone else. Blackwell had reservations. She wanted the freedom of her previous job, wanted the benefits, and didn’t “want anyone’s mortgage dependent on my ability.”

Meanwhile, in their private lives, Marcia and Tom enjoyed making gelato and had gotten so good at it that people invited them to dinner parties, suggesting they bring their gelato. Tom got an idea and said to Marcia, “Why don’t you recreate the work environment you want, and start a gelato business?”

The couple did research, realized few companies made gelato, and nobody was making organic gelato.

They started Blackwell’s Organic Certified Organic Soy Gelato and Fruit Sorbetto. The products are gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, and every flavor has at least one Fair Trade ingredient.

Initially selling in small health food and specialty food retailers around Long Branch, Blackwell’s is now in all the Whole Foods in New Jersey and specialty stores in southern Connecticut, New York, and eastern Pennsylvania—about 50 stores in all.

Blackwell’s is looking to expand, but will do so on their terms. “We’d like a LEED certified facility. We believe you should run your business like you run your life,” she says. “There’s no such thing as that’s the way business is. We are conscientious about the environment in how we manufacture, creating less waste, composting. We’re trying to prove that you can earn a living—maybe not make a killing—and live up to your ideals.”

started the nonprofit group, Operation Troop Appreciation in 2004 for soldiers to create a wish list online and have their requests granted. In September 2008, she was honored for her efforts by President George W. Bush on the White House lawn. This is the second time she and her volunteers have been recognized by the President.

Andrew J. McMullin

Juniata

was named publisher of the Journal Tribune in Biddeford, Maine, one of only seven daily newspapers in the state. Along with managing the operations of the only daily in York County, Drew was elected as president for 2009 of both of Maine’s newspaper associations: the Maine Daily Newspaper Publishers’ Association and the Maine Press Association. He is the first person to hold both presidencies in recent times.

As a member of the Maine Press Association, Drew was instrumental in lobbying the Maine Legislature to enact a shield law for journalists, the state’s first, and block the removal of legal notices from print sources. He resides in Saco, Maine with wife Zsofia (Varadi) ’98.

Jeannie J. Miller

was part of the nationally covered story about Dylan, a 9-year-old loggerhead sea turtle who was released back into the wild.

Jeannie works as an aquarist for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.

After Dylan was found as a hatchling that did not make it out

of the nest, the center brought him under their care.

Jeannie helped create a diet for Dylan in addition to helping with everyday care such as feeding and cleaning the tank.

Q: When did you make your first African trip

for Bridging the Gap?

A: I made my first trip in summer 2004. I spent about 15

days in Kenya where we built two footbridges.

Q: Do you build the bridges, or does the

organization have professionals to do that?

A: The construction is simple although labor intensive in

the early stages. The layout and location are completed by an engineer.

Q: How does the bridge benefit the community

where you’ve sited the bridge?

A: The local community must make a formal request for

a bridge and agree to raise some (funds) toward the project. This brings the community together with a common goal. Once the bridge is built children don’t have to wade through water to reach the school.

Spanning Cultures: Alumnus Builds Bridges in Africa

Tom Richards ’97 spends his free time building bridges to somewhere, more specifically he visits Kenya every few years to build footbridges spanning rivers in order to link isolated villages with schools and market centers.

So far he’s made trips to rural Kenya in 2004 and 2007 and helped villagers and other volunteers complete four footbridges, including a couple over rivers dotted with hippos and crocodiles. If this is his hobby, what might this education major do for a living?

Richards, a resident of Dublin, Pa., works as a special services counselor at a juvenile detention center in Bucks County, Pa., which is about as far from Africa as you can get. Richards made his first trip o Africa in 2004 as part of a church group seeking an African charitable organization to support. The group met with volunteers for Bridging the Gap, and Richards felt a kinship with the organization’s goals.

Q: Do the bridges help link the villages to

urban areas?

A: It links the village to market centers. During the rainy

season the rivers can become impassable for days or even weeks. Without a bridge, people often try to cross the river to sell goods at the market. The bridges also provide quicker access to medical services.

Q: Have you returned to Africa?

A: I organized and led a trip in 2007, where we built

two bridges. Going to Kenya has had a huge impact on my life. I have an appreciation for the opportunities and blessings that the United States has. The trip had such a profound effect on me that I enrolled in a master’s degree program at Eastern University in nonprofit management.

Q: Where has Bridging the Gap taken you

in Kenya?

A: I have seen most of the country, particularly the Great

Rift Valley and northwestern Kenya near the Ugandan border. I’ve seen trading practices that have not changed for hundreds of years. I had the chance to walk through the bush with a young Masai warrior to watch over his herd.

Q: How did your education at Juniata influence

your service work?

A: My liberal arts education gave me a broad base

of knowledge that I can apply to the challenges I face. Juniata’s lessons of acceptance, tolerance and appreciation for other cultures gave me a base to build on.

Q: When are you returning to Kenya?

A: I’m organizing a trip for 2009, but I will not be going.

I will probably return in 2010. We are currently building our largest project to date. It’s nearly three times the length of our previous bridges. We recently broke ground on the site on the Galana River in southeastern Kenya.

Obituaries Erwin S. Bradley ’30

June 10, 2008—Erwin enjoyed a life of 102 years. He taught in public schools for 14 years in Pennsylvania. He went on to teach for four years at Jefferson Military College and 27 years at Union College. In 1968 he traveled to Europe to make a special study on European medieval cathedrals. He is the author of three published historic works, two of which are listed in the Harvard Guide to American History. He was listed in the Dictionary of American Scholars, the Dictionary of International Biography in London, the 1972 edition of Outstanding Educators of America, and in Current Authors.

March 12, 2008—Eula was a resident of Brethren Village in Neffsville, Pa. where she was an active volunteer. Upon graduation from Juniata, she served as the secretary-treasurer of the Central Pennsylvania Juniata Club for 41 years. She continued her graduate study at Penn State and Temple Universities. Eula taught home economics for 27 years in several school districts, retiring from the Harrisburg Public Schools in 1972. In 2001, she was honored as a volunteer of the year by the Dauphin County Retired Teachers Association. She and late husband Ray were active members and lifetime deacons of the Harrisburg First Church of the Brethren. On April 26 at its Annual Dinner, the CPA Juniata Club announced that it would honor Eula’s memory and her longtime service to the Club by donating a window and a brick in her name to be used in the Founders Hall renovation. March 23, 2008—Richard worked on the Railroad Express and taught school at the Alfarata School before entering his career at the U.S. Post Office in Huntingdon, Pa. He retired as assistant postmaster in 1972 after 19 years of service. Richard loved gardening, reading, and spending time with his family.

He was also an active member of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows Lodge in which he served as state grand master.

Richard is survived by wife Margaret, son Ellis, and daughter Barbara Hayduk.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in Huntingdon, Pa., where he had served on church council and as a treasurer and secretary of the council. He was a member of the BPOE Lodge No. 976, the Diamond Valley Social Club, and the Huntingdon Lions Club, where he served as club president.

As a longtime golfer, he was a member of the Huntingdon Country Club, and he served on the Huntingdon Area School Board for 10 years. Donald began work for J.C. Blair Co. in 1933, and continued to work for its successor, Mead Corp. He is survived by four daughters; Sandra Antonelli, Pamela Schrack, Mary Ann Chick, and Donna Ingram.

Virginia (Hicks) Spires ’33

January 29, 2008—Virginia was a resident of the Manor at Penn Village in Mount Union, Pa. She was first married to George Sadosuk, and after he died, she later married Stephen Spires.

Virginia retired from Mount Union Area School District, having taught English and Latin.

She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, and enjoyed her involvement with the Shakespeare Club. She is survived by daughter Carole, son George, two stepchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Edna (Buchanan) Gibson ’37

April 16, 2008—Edna was united in marriage to Robert E. Gibson ’37, who preceded her in death.

She taught elementary school for 26 years in various school districts, and was a member of the NEA, PSEA, and YWCA book discussion group. As the wife of a Methodist minister, Edna sang in the choir, served as a Sunday School teacher, and was the leader of the women’s group.

After her retirement, she continued to teach adults in the Altoona Library literacy program.

She loved reading, music, and church activities.

October 3, 2008—Robert went on to Temple University to earn his master’s degree in business administration. He was a lifetime member of both the American Radio Relay League and the Lancaster Radio Transmitting Society. Robert was the owner of C.P. Wenger & Sons. He enjoyed international travel and visited more than 100 countries. He is survived by wife Caroline Wenger.

He earned his doctorate in chemistry from Harvard in 1942 and was employed at DuPont Experimental Station as a research chemist until he retired in 1980. During his years at DuPont he was instrumental in the development of the plastic Delrin, and he held patents on a number of types of contact lenses. He was the treasurer for the Friends of the Hockessin Library, and enjoyed photography and his vegetable garden. He is survived by son Edwin and daughter Anne. She earned her master’s degree in education from Arizona State University. She is survived by brother Olin H. Brougher ’37, brother-in-laws G. Lawrence Landes ’59 and Robert P. April 15, 2008—Allen graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, specializing in internal medicine. He served in World War II as captain in the Army Medical Corps, and later worked at Walter Reed Hospital.

He was united in marriage to Bethel in 1947, and settled in Indianapolis, Ind. where he ran a medical practice for 57 years.

He was very involved in the community, as he made house calls, served as church elder, and served as a chairman of Winona Hospital. Allen loved grouse hunting, fishing, tennis, golf and playing bridge.

February 21, 2008—Edith was married to husband Hans, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Brit Shalom in State College, Pa., and is survived by two sons.

March 3, 2008—Edna began her career as an assistant dietitian at Lewistown Hospital and an assistant chemist at Thiokol Chemical Corporation before starting her family. She taught home economics in the Bristol School District, and served as a substitute teacher for the Huntingdon Area School District in Huntingdon, Pa. Edna was a lifetime member of the AAUW, and was active in the Religious Society of Friends in Yardley and Huntingdon. She was a dedicated Red Cross volunteer in her retirement, doing child care at many disaster sites across the United States. She was also an American Cancer Society volunteer. Edna was a lifelong volunteer for Juniata, serving as Class Fund Agent with her husband, Jacob H. Eisenhart ’44, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by son Craig A. Eisenhart ’70 and his wife Patricia (Burkhart) ’69, daughters Lynne and Jane, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Wendell M. McMillan ’48

April 1, 2008—Wendell obtained his master’s degree in science from York College and his doctorate from Penn State University. He was a recipient of the Fulbright Award from the U.S. Department of State and did post-graduate work at the Royal College of Agriculture in Denmark. Wendell worked as an agricultural economist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was always concerned with providing food and supplies for those less fortunate. For 17 years, he lived overseas and worked as a manager and consultant on agriculture development projects for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Bank and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Wendell retired in 1989 after serving as a senior policy advisor for the USAID Africa Bureau in Washington, D.C. He wrote many publications on agricultural cooperatives, marketing and development. He was involved in many boards and committees, and enjoyed his community service. He was privileged to meet Rosa Parks and be present at the 1963 civil rights event in the Lincoln Memorial/ National Mall area when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. He received the Juniata Alumni Achievement Award in

1984 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from York College. Wendell is survived by wife Eleanor, three children, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Ray S. Detwiler ’49

June 16, 2008—Ray was a member of the First Baptist Church, and he retired as the instrumental music director for the Altoona Area School District in 1976.

He played trumpet since 1929, and during World War II, he was part of the 110th Infantry Division Band and then the 17th Airborne Infantry Band.

taught herself the mountain dulcimer and went on to found The Gainesville Strummers. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, son Charles, daughters Susan Bolton, Cathy Griffin, and Jennifer Sassoms, and 12 grandchildren.

March 16, 2008—Donald graduated from the Princeton Theological Seminary and the Lancaster Theological Seminary, where he received his doctorate.

He went on to serve the Govens Presbyterian Church of Baltimore, Md., the Oil City Presbyterian Church of Oil City, Pa., the Frederick Presbyterian Church of Frederick, Md., and the Central Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg, Pa. until his retirement after 40 years of ministry. He is survived by wife Peggie.

George P. Newcombe ’53

June 3, 2008—George married Marjorie (Peightel) ’53 at the Stone Church of the Brethren in Huntingdon, Pa. in 1954. He was a member of Bridgewater United Methodist Church in Bridgewater, N.J. and had served on the financial committee. After graduation from Juniata, he was stationed in Germany and attained the rank of sergeant while serving in the U.S. Army from 1954-1957. He is survived by his wife, daughters Linda Sakevich and Nancy Martin, son David, and seven grandchildren.

Alma ( Skinner) Ryan ’56

May 25, 2008—Alma was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force in 1957. She received her master’s degree in psychology from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico in 1970, and married husband Arthur in 1960.

She was a music director, a leader in Girl Scouts, member of the Daytona Philharmonic Choir, and docent for the Dayton Art Institute and Philharmonic Orchestra throughout her life. She is survived by daughter Rosalin, sons Arthur, Eric, and Paul, and six grandchildren.

March 3, 2008—Sandy completed postgraduate course work in elementary education at Temple University and was a teacher in the Upper Darby School District in Upper Darby, Pa. She was active in the church her entire life, and after moving to North Manchester, Ind., was a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed attending and supporting her grandchildren’s sports and school

April 21, 2008—After his graduation, Bill served as director of admissions at Juniata. He went on to work for Owens Corning Fiberglas, and continued his work in human resources. Bill enjoyed gardening, and his volunteer work was evidenced by the trees and shrubs adorning the lawn at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, Ohio. He volunteered with the elderly, helped with repairs and delivered their meals.

He is survived by wife Joanie and an extensive family who will miss his compassion and kindness.

Trudy (Grose) Banks ’67

June 14, 2008—Trudy taught French and conflict resolution at Portage Area High School in Portage, Pa. for 31 years before retiring in 2002. “Madame” Banks was a popular and respected teacher who chaperoned several fieldtrips to Canada and Europe with her French students. Judy enjoyed traveling, spending time in St. Petersburg, Fla. with her family, and dancing. She is survived by husband William R. Banks III ’68, daughters Tricia and Jenna, and six grandchildren.

March 18, 2008—Dick received his master’s degree in computer science from Penn State University and took a position with HRB Singer as a systems manager. He worked for many Department of Defense contractors, including RCA, GE Defense Systems and Lockheed Martin. His accomplishments include racing modified dirt track cars, coaching his three sons in baseball, attaining his pilot’s wings

and retiring from the defense industry.

Dick then spent his time boating and diving in the waters off the Florida coast and Central America. He is survived by wife Ellen, sons Richard, Gregory, and Christopher, two grandsons, three granddaughters, and three step-granddaughters.

John W. Good ’68

August 5, 2008—John attended Ohio University after graduating from Juniata. He was a social studies teacher for 30 years at Conestoga Valley School District in Brownstown, Pa., and later became department chair. During his time there he was also the athletic director. He served as West Earl Township Auditor and was a member of the West Earl Township Lion’s Club. He was a member of Ephrata Church of the Brethren, where he served as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and youth club leader. He is survived by wife Karen, two sons, and a daughter.

March 17, 2008—Sam was active in the Juniata Concert Band while a student and was later active in the Juniata College Alumni Band.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1966, and retired in 1998 after working for 30 years as a probation and parole supervisor for the Corrections Department of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Sam was a member

March 21, 2008—James was a resident of Lincoln Village in Ohio for 45 years. He retired after 35 years of teaching band and instrumental music in Big Spring High School, Finland Middle School, and Franklin Heights High School. He was also a part-time professional musician.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a saxophonist and music arranger for the 199th Army Band and the 5th Armored Division Army Band during the Korean War. February 27, 2008—Upon graduation from Juniata, Carol was employed at a local bank in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1975, after raising her children, she returned to work as a customer administrative supervisor for Digital Equipment Corporation, from which she retired after 26 years. Carole enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and watching Red Sox and Patriots games. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe, and to the various wine regions of California. Carol is survived by husband Telford D. Knepper ’55, sons Randall and Jeffrey A. Knepper ’80 and his wife Michele (Singel) ’81, daughters Karen Katz and Barbara Zitscher, and nine grandchildren.

He sold life insurance for several years and earned his Life Underwriter Training Council certifications before returning to the family business. He became the owner of Herman’s Quality Meat Shoppe, LLC in 1992. He was listed in the National Directory of Executives and Professionals of Who’s Who for Businessmen, and he shared his business expertise with others. He was active in church and served as Eucharistic minister, a group leader, and a Sunday School teacher. He is survived by wife Christine, daughters Kelly Grimshaw and Stacy Herman, and sons Mark and Justin.

March 3, 2008—Harold received his degree in dentistry from Temple University in 1978. He was a family dentist in Denver, Pa. where he was also the dentist for the Cocalico School District. He enjoyed fishing, antiquing, hot-rodding, hunting, following the stock market, walking, and playing cards. Harold is survived by wife Brenda, three daughters, and six grand daughters.

May 24, 2008—Terry worked as a whitewater river guide for O.A.R.S. Inc., running trips on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon for 35 years. In 1978, he started his own wilderness travel company, Earthquest, which specialized in river trips, mountain trekking, and sea kayaking in Alaska, Chile, Peru, and Venezuela. He was a longtime resident of Flagstaff and spent many winters in South America guiding trips until he relocated to Seattle in 1998. Most recently Terry was employed by Rivers Fiji, a company that runs river rafting and sea kayaking trips on the island of Viti Levu. He is survived by wife Donna Hewitt and son Hayden.

July 13, 2008—David was the alumni director at Juniata from 1970-1983. In 1987, he moved to Bloomsburg, Pa. to work as district manager for State Farm Agency. During his tenure he was an 11-time Life Ambassador Qualifier and qualified to attend every National Convention throughout 25 years of service for State Farm Policyholders. In 1995 he returned to Personal Production with a State Farm Office in Berwick, Pa. He was an associate member of the Berwick VFW and the North American Hunting Club. He was the national sponsor of Rock Mt. Elk Foundation and served with the Columbia County Sheriffs Posse for 18 years. David is survived by wife Elsie and stepdaughters Ruth and Shelly.

Jane Crosby

My wife, Lona, and I owe a debt of gratitude to Jane Crosby, who introduced us to the Juniata family as well as the town of Huntingdon when we returned to teach.

This was beyond what we learned as students. (Lona had studied history under Ken Crosby). We soon learned about the Crosby team and how they actively participated in the life of the Huntingdon community.

Jane was one of the founders of the Huntingdon League of Women Voters, which got women actively into politics, both at the local and national level. She was a consultant to the State College and Altoona chapters of the LVW as they also grew.

As part of her service to others, she was an official visitor of the Pennsylvania Prison Society, where she helped prisoners at the local penitentiaries. She was honored as Volunteer of the Year at one point in her service.

She was an excellent cook and home economist, expressing her practical interest as an active member of the Huntingdon Food Co-op, and lending her home as the distribution point for others to pick up their orders.

As a way of bringing members of the Juniata community together, she was an active participant in the Tuesday Menders group. This provided opportunities every Tuesday evening for spouses of faculty (the faculty was mostly male in earlier years) to share their experiences as mothers and members of the college and town community as they did their family’s mending. An era past.

We became closer to Jane and Ken as Ron and Betty Ann Cherry, Lona and I took part in getting to know new faculty members by having them to dinner during their first semester at Juniata. The dinners had been started by Jane and Ken, but as the faculty expanded, they asked us and others to continue the tradition. Students of the ’50s and ’60s may remember Jane who always took a ukulele to Mountain Day and sang folk songs before such things became the national rage. And who can forget her singing the role of Little Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore on the Oller Hall stage?

To top it all off, Jane was a supermom before that word became a part of our vocabulary. She and Ken raised Jeff and Tina, who became attorney and professor, respectively, and who are respected by all who know them.

At Juniata, she worked as a freshman tutor and spent the summer of 1948 at a Quaker work camp removing rubble from a bombed-out hospital in Freiburg, Germany. She married Ken Crosby in 1949.

Crosby remained active in her community, particularly at the Stone Church of the Brethren, where she sang in the choir and served as the director of administrative planning for Camp Blue Diamond. At Juniata she was a church representative to the Board of Trustees.

She was an active member and former chair of the League of Women Voters. She also was a member of the Huntingdon branch of the American Association of University Women, and worked extensively with the Lifer’s Association of the Pennsylvania Prison Society.

She is survived by a son, Jefferson Crosby, of Lititz, Pa., and a daughter, K. Christina Crosby, of Middletown, Conn.

2009 Fall-Winter

Jane Crosby, professor emeritus of home economics at Juniata, died Oct. 23 in Huntingdon, Pa. She was 92. She was married to the late Ken Crosby, professor emeritus of history, who died in 1990.

A 1937 graduate of the College, she joined the Juniata faculty as an instructor in home economics in 1946 and was promoted to assistant professor in 1948. She earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics and went on to earn a master’s degree in home economics in 1943 from Cornell University. She also took graduate courses at the University of Hawaii in 1940.

She started her educational career as a high school teacher in 1938 and taught at Beaver Vocational High School and Waynesboro Junior High School. She moved into higher education in 1943, teaching at Queens College in Charlotte, N.C.. In 1945 she was a social worker in New York City at Hudson Guild Neighborhood House.

I met a Juniata alum in the most unusual place …

aniel F. O’Sullivan ’64 and Samantha I. Bates ’09, (both reside in the Harrisburg area) met while they were being treated at the Milton Hershey Hospital Outpatient Therapy Center. Samantha mentioned she was a Juniata student when she saw the Juniata alumni shirt Dan was wearing. And, they discovered another common connection—both were injured when traveling to or from Juniata. Dan was injured in an auto accident on June 8, 2008 when returning from Juniata, where he had volunteered at a Juniata Admissions Ambassador Information Table during Alumni Weekend. Samantha was injured in an auto accident on August 3, 2008 as she traveled to Juniata. She is studying theatre with emphasis on the technical aspects of theatre operations. Due to the accident she was unable to return to Juniata for the fall semester, but expects her rehabilitation will allow her to return for the spring semester and graduation by fall 2009. wo Juniata geology alums crossed paths for the first time at Lake Cumberland, Ky. on May 16, 2008. Kenneth W. Kuehn ’75, a professor of geology at Western Kentucky University, was attending a meeting of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Institute of Professional Geologists to study the $350 million repair program underway at the Wolf Creek Dam. Brook E. Brosi ’95, a geologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers overseeing the project, led the group on a site tour and made a presentation about the history of the dam and its restoration. Lake Cumberland, renowned for its recreational opportunities, is the largest reservoir lake east of the Mississippi covering 65,000 acres to a depth of more than 90 feet and providing about 1,200 miles of shoreline.

s my husband David G. Oliver ’63 and I and our party of eight were waiting to board our plane home from Ireland, Juniata classmate, Mary (Matta) Gourley ’64, spotted Ronald J. Poruban’s ’63 Juniata hat, and introduced herself. Ron found Dave, who sent Mary to find me in the Duty Free Shopping area, and we had a reunion! She had been on a tour with 60 other people including some of her family. We had a nice chat. She has a conflict with the reunion dates but said that she enjoys getting the newsletters. What a neat way to end our wonderful trip.

y husband, Bill, attended the International Association of Forensic Scientists conference in New Orleans, La. and I went along. While we were walking through the exhibit hall, Bill was spotted wearing his Juniata polo shirt by Teresa Snyder-Leiby ’81 and Dr. David Hulce (Juniata instructor 1993-94). Teresa and David were presenting at the booth SoftGenetics of State College, Pa. Later that day, Bill attended a class with another Juniata alum, Robert A. Freed ’63, a retired chief of police of Lansdale, Pa. and an adjunct instructor at Montgomery County Community College.

met Janet (Edgar) Walbert ’78 during a presentation she made to one of my graduate classes at the University of Akron in Ohio. She was speaking of her career in higher education and mentioned the importance of her resident assistantship and Juniata College when my eyes lit up. We of course interrupted class to have a quick chat about where we were both RAs on campus. With such a long and prominent career in higher education, it was a pleasure hearing Jan speak and seeing that Juniata has meant just as much to her and her career as it has mine.

Uncommon Leadership: A “Landmark” Decision

Kierkegaard knew that a good “leap of faith” could mobilize an entire community and give it that special bounce when needed most.

Remember the Super Ball? Last year Juniata’s athletic teams were tossed like a Super Ball into the clouds and, while waiting with nervous anticipation for the drop, wondered how they might bounce back. (Okay, granted, this might be a stretch. But that’s exactly what happened.)

Watching and waiting with our coaches and athletes for the ball to drop, President Tom Kepple not only took a giant leap of faith last year, he assisted others to jump in too. One year later, the Juniata community has a new bounce in its step. Here’s what happened: Grasping the opportunity as quickly as it arose in 2007, our football team left the Middle Atlantic Conference for the Centennial Conference. One of those “it took-a-long-time-coming” positions finally opened for our students to reap the benefits of a new home.

The Centennial suits Juniata’s football players better for competition, public relations, and recruiting purposes. As a consequence however, our entire roster of non-football sports was voted out of the NCAA-Division III, Middle Atlantic Commonwealth Conference. Mid Atlantic requires an “all or nothing” application from its members.

After years of collaboration with Commonwealth teams, we were dropped from the competition and tossed into the nebulous—we were a college without a conference.

While football started nestling into its new conference, the rest of our athletic teams were suddenly homeless.

Having had previous experience in the design and implementation of a new athletic conference during his sojourn at Rhodes College, Tom Kepple shared an uncommon vision with Athletic Director Larry Bock.

“I’ve done this before; I can do it again. We’ll make a new NCAA III conference. We’ll get it right and we’ll do it fast.”

From the outset of his administration, Tom had envisioned a better, more academically aligned group of competitors for Juniata. He set forth to create a conference that would complement and showcase

our educational affiliations, public relations, marketability and competition. An opportunity revealed itself. The time had come. He imagined, believed, and leapt.

The end result: Tom Kepple’s strong networking and negotiation skills landed us in what became known as the “Landmark Conference.” And within weeks of his leap, Tom stepped into a new administrative position. The newly formed, presidential governing staff unanimously elected Tom to preside over the nascent Landmark. Both Juniata and the Landmark Conference called Tom their President in 2007.

With undaunted courage and leadership, Tom Kepple—alongside award-winning Athletic Director Larry Bock, dedicated team coaches and impassioned student athletes—bounced us into one of the greatest “winning seasons” in Juniata sports history.

So impressed was the staff at NCAA headquarters that the Landmark Conference has become the template for other aspirant conferences to model.

While football remains housed in Commonwealth, the rest of Juniata’s athletic teams share competitive domain nowadays with: Moravian, Susquehanna, Drew, Goucher, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Scranton University, and Catholic University.

With Landmark, games have become field trips.

Student athletes not only encounter tough competition when playing away, they also discover diverse cultural centers like: Washington D.C., Baltimore, and New York City. Because of the historic value these places inspire, “Landmark” earned its name.

There is indeed a new bounce in our step these days: we enrolled the largest freshman class in Juniata history; athletic teams are flourishing in leaps and bounds; and while Landmark Conference actualizes our educational and athletic potentiality, more importantly, it elevates community spirit.
