President’s Report 2017-2018

The 2017-2018 year was defined by a spectacular level of academic achievement, alumni support, and national visibility for Juniata.

If you’ve followed previous issues of Juniata magazine, you know Juniata and its people have earned recognition for efforts to help low-income and first-generation college students to succeed, for strengthening the inclusive and welcoming character of our campus for all who choose to attend, and for our work on global education.

Such recognition underscores the progress we are making on our strategic plan, Courage to Act. In these pages, we share information about the highest scholarly outcomes for our students and a sense of what the community of Juniata alumni, parents, and friends is making possible. In the next few weeks, Believe: The Campaign for Juniata will accelerate in visible ways as we join with supporters to make the most significant investment in the student experience in our history.

On the cover, our students reflect the promise on which we all focus. In the center, we celebrate their significant achievements.

Their accomplishments and journeys inspire us all. They believe in our history of transformational education and represent our future, and I trust their belief is contagious.

ASS OF NOTABLE TALENT AND DRIVE. Two-thirds have a stated interest in STEM fields, and about eight percent are exploratory, intending to find a direction while at Juniata.

Female students comprise 56 percent of the class.

MAJOR AWARDS AND FELLOWSHIPS For the fourth consecutive year, three Juniata students have won Fulbright English Teaching awards. Emily Parker ’18 and Anna Oldenbrook ’18 will teach in Colombia, and Emily Kutz ’18 will teach in Spain.

Parker also earned a Student of the Year award, in the liberal arts category, from the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers (PennACE) due to her work during an internship at the Pachaysana Institute in Ecuador in summer 2017.

Stephanie Letourneau ’20 and Rachel Kim ’20 have won Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarships. The competitive national awards are open to full-time undergraduates studying in STEM and education.

Scholarship recipients receive a two-year financial scholarship and a 10-week, full-time, paid summer internship at any NOAA facility nationwide, with all travel expenses included in the award. Scholars also receive funding to present their NOAA research projects at up to two national scientific conferences.

Bekah Ford ’19, who studies biology and has earned the College’s genomics certification, won a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Ford was chosen from a field of 1,280 students from hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide.

Goldwater recipients are assessed based on academic merit in math, science, and engineering. The scholarship will assist Ford with tuition during the last year of her undergraduate career.

Liliane Umuhoza ’19

Liliane Umuhoza ’19 was awarded a Newman Civic Fellowship, a one-year experience sponsored by Campus Compact, a non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education through community engagement. Through the fellowship, Umuhoza will attend a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, in addition to furthering work she does to raise awareness of genocide. The fellowship also provides access to apply for exclusive scholarship and postgraduate opportunities.

2017-2018 President’s Report

Lyvia Toth ’21 was awarded a Finnegan Fellowship from the James A. Finnegan Foundation.

The award enabled Toth to complete a 10week, paid internship at Pennsylvania’s Public Utility Commission in the Bureau of Technical Utility Services. She studies international politics.

Dennis Wilt ’18 earned a position with the U.S. Teaching Assistantships in Austria, a Fulbright program until recently, which enables American college graduates to teach English in Austrian secondary schools and universities.

Isabelle Wojciechowski ’18 won a David L. Boren Critical Language Study Award. The Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation. Wojciechowski will study in China.

Soumya Polavarapu ’19, who studies biochemistry with a secondary emphasis in art history, was awarded the Andrew Mutch Scholarship from the St. Andrews Society of Philadelphia to study at the University of Glasgow in 2018-2019.

Five Juniata students earned Benjamin Gilman Scholarships: Nichole Leiby ’19, who studied in Australia; Brody Greenleaf ’19, who studied in Spain; Khoreen Eccleston ’18, who studied in Japan; Rina Kirsch ’19, who studied in Russia and New Zealand; and Katheryn Weeden ’19, who studied in Spain.

Named for Benjamin Gilman, a Republican U.S. Representative from New York, the program offers grants for undergraduate students of limited financial means to study abroad, encouraging awardees to choose non-traditional destinations.

GIVING For each of the last two fiscal years, our alumni, parents, and friends have provided gifts in support of the College that have led to back-to-back record fundraising results. Community: A successful Huntingdon is key to a successful 30000000 Juniata. This year we helped celebrate Huntingdon’s 250th anniversary. More than 600 students were engaged in learning activities through 0 service, internships, or work in the local region. A major step in strengthening our inclusive community was the hiring of Marita Gilbert, Ph.D., dean of institutional equity and inclusive excellence.

Distinctiveness: In May 2018, the faculty passed a sweeping reinvention of the College’s general education curriculum. The faculty will implement the new curriculum over the next few years. Its salient characteristic is that it will challenge students to draw from many disciplinary perspectives to understand what we know and how we learn to ask good questions as they help solve problems.
