Dear Friends, This year’s President’s Report is the first issue to reflect my first full year as president of the College, and you’ll notice that the format of this publication has changed from previous issues.

In the past, we have often sketched out longform stories about advances the College has made or new initiatives that debuted over a particular year. This year we are taking a smaller aspect of previous President’s Reports and blowing it up. In past issues the Timeline, a visual chronicle of the year’s seminal events, was played down, almost as a footnote to the stories we chose to highlight. It would run along the bottom of the pages throughout the magazine.

This year, we are making the Timeline the focus of the President’s Report. Although this format is a major change—in fact the magazine is no longer the dimensions of a classic magazine—it also is a return to the early days of magazines and corporate annual reports. The use of photography to tell a story is often underused these days, probably because we are more attuned to moving images. But such classic publications as the now-gone Life, Look, and today’s National Geographic have never forgotten that imagery is everything.

In addition, these photos commemorate not only events, but we also made sure to include how events, awards, triumphs, and news items tie into Juniata’s long-term goals and plans. As we formulate Juniata’s next strategic plan in the coming year, it is illuminating to see how the “theory” of a strategic goal is translated into the “practice” of a newsworthy outcome. The new look of our President’s Report makes this connection transparent.

Each photograph, many of them taken in the moment by student

photographers, documents Juniata’s commitment to experiential learning, rigorous academic study, and completed goals.

A critical component in achieving our goals is a dedicated, ambitious, and personable leadership team. Over the past year, we have completed two national searches to bring in Fumio Sugihara, vice president for enrollment, and Lauren Bowen, provost. With the rest of the senior leadership team—Bethany Sheffield, executive assistant to the president, Gabe Welsch, vice president of advancement and marketing, Kris Clarkson, dean of students, Anne Wood, assistant vice president and chief information officer, and Rob Yelnosky ’85, vice president of finance and operations—Juniata is poised for even greater summits of achievement.

Keep an eye to future Juniata publications and to our social media channels as we share with all of you how the next strategic plan is developing. With the senior team in place, I look forward to how they will work with our faculty, alumni, students, parents, and friends to shape Juniata’s future while honoring the traditions and values that have positioned us so well in the present.

Please look at the past year’s triumphs in this newly designed report, which visually and artistically sets the tone for a different approach to how Juniata tells its story and documents how the College accomplishes its aims.

June 17: Juniata hosts its first GCAT-SEEK Workshop.

Juniata

Fueled by a $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Juniata has staked out its claim as the go-to college for genomics. On June 17, the College hosted a workshop for regional liberal arts institutions. What makes this distinctly “Jun-ique” is the College’s creation of an interdisciplinary program in Genomics, Ethics and Society, which utilizes faculty from the humanities and social sciences in what has previously been the domain of science faculty.

Although President Troha started work in June, the academic year saw him become even more deeply involved in every aspect of the campus. Whether Storming the Arch, handing out coffee, or scheduling campus forums, Troha’s wholehearted dive into the College culture made the campus community realize that Juniata is poised to think about, evolve through, and act on the next era of greatness.

In addition, Troha and the campus assembled a new leadership team as Lauren Bowen joined the administrative team as provost, Fumio Sugihara was hired as vice president for enrollment, and Anne Wood was promoted to assistant vice president and chief information officer. As Troha initiated the next College strategic plan later in the year, it became clear the campus leaders were not willing to settle for status quo.

July 23: College makes Chronicle of Higher Education’s “Great Places to Work” Honor Roll.

As Juniata brings together its strategic plan for the next five years, having a workforce well-versed in the values of Juniata and dedicated to improving what is already a formidable model for liberal arts education can be boiled down to a single word: value.

Sept. 5: Trustee John Nagl returns to host discussion of The Warriors, written by J. Glenn Gray ’36.

All colleges and universities have a governing board of trustees or directors who offer advice and guidance to the president as well as administrators.

Few trustees take the time to return to a campus to teach a class, particularly to a group of freshmen. As all Juniatians know, this College isn’t much like other places, and that point was proved when trustee John Nagl, a retired U.S. Army officer who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan and wrote the Army’s counterinsurgency manual, led a discussion of the College’s freshman summer reading, The Warriors, by alumnus J. Glenn Gray ’36.

Sept 10: Sparkling $2.3 million renovation of Baker Refectory reopens.

Sodexo, Juniata’s dining service provider, remade Baker Refectory into a more flexible “food court” design, giving hungry students options numerous enough to suit the fussiest eaters. Colleges and universities across the country see more and more incoming freshmen arrive with special dietary needs, while the uptick in international student recruitment also poses challenges for institutions to offer an array of dietary choices.

While perfection was not to last the entire year, Juniata’s emerging success in football and soccer was a good sign for increased recognition for the College’s sports program, which in turn increases Juniata’s name recognition in critical recruitment areas along the Mid-Atlantic and East Coast.

Sept. 23: Juniata rated a “Top Ten Up and Coming School” by U.S. News and World Report.

Physics Phun Night isn’t the only thing at Juniata that’s on fire. The College is climbing many of the national rankings.

It seems as if the only rating colleges and universities aren’t competing for is People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” contest. Juniata has consistently been in the top 100 of the U.S. News poll since the early 2000s, but the magazine’s recognition of Juniata as an Up and Coming School should bring the College’s reputation as an excellent liberal arts college into sharper focus. Juniata also scored Top 100 placements in many other prestigious ratings, including those done by Forbes.com, Washington Monthly and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. By singling out Juniata from the crowded marketplace, U.S. News’s endorsement gets the College’s name in front of its most important audience: prospective students.

Nowadays, many high school seniors consider starting at a local community college in order to find a career interest and take advantage of the lower tuition rates associated with community colleges. Historically, Juniata has recognized the trend and, a few years back, began cooperative agreements with several two-year institutions such as Harrisburg Area Community College and Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. A Huntingdon couple, Margy and Dale Miller, who own and operate C.H. Miller Hardware Co., noticed the same demographic shifts and worked with the College to endow a $50,000 scholarship to provide financial aid to students transferring from Pennsylvania Highlands Community College.

The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies is able to invite thought-provoking, and sometimes controversial, speakers onto campus throughout the year by using funds provided by the program’s original endowment from John and Elizabeth Evans Baker. A portion of the Baker’s gift made sure to include funding for speakers or special activities. Juniata’s peace and conflict studies faculty strive to bring in speakers who offer different viewpoints or shake up the conventional wisdom in a particular academic discipline. Those who provide endowed support help ensure, as the Bakers did, that their legacy endures.

Oct. 7: Juniata receives $65,000 Fulbright-Hays grant to fund trip to Morocco.

Educational opportunities for faculty often are only obtainable through grants. At a smaller institution such as Juniata, opportunities to apply for grants may be missed when a professor is busy teaching or working on a research project.

The College hired a professional consulting firm, McAllister & Quinn, to help the grants office pursue funding opportunities beyond Juniata’s traditional funding outlets. The firm helped Michael Henderson, professor of French, and Kati Csoman, assistant dean of international programs, secure funding from the Department of Education to take a group of Juniata personnel and teachers and Huntingdon Area School District administrators to explore intensive language instruction and cultural education in Morocco.

The key to obtaining the grant was Juniata’s community-based focus to ensure that knowledge gained on the venture would be spread through the College’s educational network.

Oct. 8: Physics restarts new community program, Observatory Nights.

Sometimes Juniata doesn’t have to search for funding to bring academics to the forefront. Matt Beaky, assistant professor of physics, revived an ambitious tradition that revealed the heavens to Juniata’s students, staff, and community members. The College already received a gift from Paul Hickes to build the observatory. We already had a brand-new telescope. Add an interested audience and you have a recipe for community involvement.

Oct. 19: Juniata announces its endowment has passed the $100 million mark the same day as a Board of Trustees meeting and Inauguration.

A college or university uses its endowment for many things, ranging from funding certain faculty salaries to supporting student research. For many years Juniata had approached the $100 million benchmark, but two financial downturns, in 2001 and 2008, temporarily derailed the College’s efforts. The College put together an endowment initiative that raised the funds over the magic mark in just five years. In order to compete within Pennsylvania and regionally, Juniata will continue to build the endowment to keep pace with competitors and to ensure opportunities for future students.

Leadership Giving By Society

The Juniata Scholarship Fund raises money to award scholarships to academically qualified students who demonstrate great financial need. As we continue to welcome large classes to Juniata, we know that the impact of these awards will continue to be felt.

The President’s Circle totaled 181, a special designation for those who make a leadership gift to JSF equal to or greater than one average student award ($2,500).

Overall Giving

Heritage Circle members invest in the future of Juniata through planned giving. “Planned giving” simply means that individuals make gifts to the College that require some planning before they are made. Because such gifts involve accumulated assets distributed over time or through one’s will, they empower people to make leadership gifts beyond what they might think possible.

Illustrations to the left show a record-breaking year for JSF and a healthy number of gift commitments. The chart below appears to send a different message. Giving for fiscal year 2014 (June 1, 2103 to May 31, 2014) was well below previous years. The number has less to do with generosity of alumni and friends and more to do with timing. In previous years, Juniata received very large gifts from individuals’ estates or granting agencies. In fiscal year 2014, none of those events occurred, though general giving remained strong. President Troha had a singular vision for becoming Juniata’s 12th president—to open the event beyond campus confines. Thus, people ambled downtown to local businesses, the president visited local civic organizations, tours were offered, and the budget was funded by gifts from individuals, campus partners, and regional businesses. Oh yes, the president made a great speech, received lots of gifts (golf balls, ceramics, original artwork), and shook at least 2,000 hands, too.

The fourth year of the Executive in Residence program, funded by a gift from entrepreneur Carl Glaeser ’77, has cemented the vision for Juniata’s business faculty.

Successful alumni from all fields of business have been asked to return and give a public talk for students and the community. The really important conversations are between the executive and curious students. To get oneon-one advice from executives who once sat in the same classrooms gives students concrete evidence their dreams are attainable.

Competition is keen, and Juniata’s past strong participation helped us to stand out from the crowd. Nov. 2: Katrina Woods ’14 wins Juniata’s first individual cross country title in the Landmark Championships and is named Performer of the Year.

Woods came to Juniata from Shirleysburg, Pa., where she competed at a small high school with just a few women on the track team.

Once on campus, she started to dominate Landmark Conference cross-country meets. She excelled in the classroom as well, receiving an internship at Texas A&M in environmental science.

For private liberal arts colleges, operating budgets are intricately intertwined with how many students the college enrolls every spring, making the person in charge of enrollment one of the most important persons on campus.

Juniata has succeeded—in most years—at making or exceeding its enrollment goals. By hiring Sugihara from the University of Puget Sound, the College is poised to stabilize incoming class sizes while expanding enrollment over the next decade.

Intercollegiate sports are essential to the health and operations of a liberal arts college because competition attracts successful leaders who would like to extend their sports careers after high school. A thriving sports program is crucial to attract athletes and Juniata’s soccer success in the past few years has made pitching the pitch easier. Almost as important to recruitment success is a stable coaching staff. Dan Dubois came to Juniata in 2002 and is just one of many coaches on staff for more than 10 years. The stability and knowledge accrued by such long-tenured coaches have led the Eagles upward.

Juniata

Many football players from 2013-2014 point to the 2012 football victory over Susquehanna as the turning point in team fortunes after several losing seasons. Last year’s 17-10 victory came early enough to inspire the Eagles to finish with a 7-4 record. A winning record in football enables most colleges to more easily recruit male students and inspire donations to improve facilities.

Tim Launtz ’80 has been head coach of the football team just a few years, but he has worked as an assistant coach on campus for more than two decades. Who better to turn in a winning record than an excellent communicator, Juniata alumnus, and Huntingdon native who knows Juniata’s tradition of excellence? Launtz brought confidence, dedication, and fun back to his alma mater. He’s pretty good at recruiting, too, which always helps Juniata make the class.

Juniata

Felus’s own career mirrored that of his team. Each year he played for Juniata, he improved his performance and encouraged his teammates to follow his example, not only on the field, but in the classroom. This spring, Felus received the William A. Schlicter Award, an academic prize that rewards a Juniata student who sets an example for excellence during his first three years at the College.

Nov. 21: Nobel Laureate Bill Phillips ’70 returns to campus to give a talk on “the coolest stuff in the world.”

One of the coolest things about Bill Phillips and his propensity for talking is that the Nobel Laureate always mentions Juniata as the place that inspired his science career. Jamie White, professor of physics, has lost count of the fellow scientists who, noting White’s Juniata affiliation, say “Isn’t that where Bill Phillips went to school?” When a Nobel Prize-winner is recruiting for the College and offering students internships in his lab, prospective students can’t help but be awed by the campus and its tight-knit community of scientists.

Although some non-football fans decry the importance placed on football teams playing in the postseason, the camaraderie engendered by bonding together in a common and winning athletic cause inspires intense loyalty among players and alumni. It’s no secret on campus that some of the more enthusiastic supporters in College history were associated with bowl-going football squads in the 1950s and 1970s.

Dec. 1: Alumni couple Tom and Mary (Beaver) Werner fund an annual chemistry lecture.

Often Juniata alumni think about donating funds for scholarships to help incoming students or to fund some sort of faculty program. Tom ’64 and Mary (Beaver) Werner ’65 instead wanted to give Juniata’s science students (and others interested in science) a chance to hear talented scientists from beyond campus boundaries. The Werners funded an annual chemistry lecture to honor the late John Reeves ’64, a chemist who taught at the University of Texas Health Science Center, the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology and the New Jersey Medical School. The Werners remembered their classmate as a great athlete, musician, art photographer, and poet. By bringing in speakers with similar multifaceted interests, the Werners hope to inspire the same eclecticism that fueled John Reeves’ educational journey.

Recognition for any athlete in Juniata’s sports program is a multistage opportunity to keep the College uppermost in the minds of the public. First, the announcement celebrates the player and Juniata in the player’s hometown and in the local community. Second, honors such as this keep the College in the minds of media and competing coaches who formulate or vote on team rankings. Third, the more you hear Juniata’s name in the news and in conversation, the more parents and prospective students will be familiar with the College. Repetition is the key to name recognition.

Although Juniata highly touts its capacity for creating community on campus by incubating memorable projects and experiences through student clubs and service, one factor sometimes gets less attention—how Juniata projects affect the community beyond campus. Planting Seeds reached out to perform service projects for communities such as Amish and Mennonite farmers, food banks, and other constituencies that might not have had contact with the College otherwise.

Feb: 10: Arthur Brown makes $1.5 million donation to support southern Huntingdon County students.

Juniata’s enrollment efforts have expanded beyond the College’s traditional central Pennsylvania territories, but that doesn’t mean enrollment counselors are ignoring talented students in our own backyard. Arthur Brown, a retired Community State Bank of Orbisonia executive from Orbisonia, Pa., is a lifelong resident of the county and knows first-hand how hard it is for students to get the kind of education Juniata offers. Inspired by his late mother Verda’s efforts to earn a teaching certificate at Juniata in 1927, he established a provision in his will to leave $1.5 million to support Juniata students from southern Huntingdon County. His community focus is natural because that’s his connection to Juniata. He helped a current student come to the College by providing some funds for fees and books. “The root of my gift is that this was the best thing I could do with the wealth I could pass on,” Brown says. “I believe when you leave this world, leave it a little better than when you were here.”

Bringing a speaker onto campus typically asks the invited orator to parachute in for the day, speak at night, and leave first thing in the morning. That’s not how things are done at Juniata. Every event becomes a teachable moment and those we ask to speak are no different. Daniel Ellsberg stayed a few days on campus and visited several PACS classes despite a severe cold. He gave an impassioned speech and had students lining up to talk with him afterward. Not bad for an octogenarian.

What better testament to the effectiveness of a Juniata strategic plan than the victory of an international student in the College’s most celebrated contest?

In the last strategic plan, administrators laid out a roadmap for increased internationalization that has met or exceeded the original vision for Juniata. As students walk on campus and see students from China, Indonesia, Vietnam, France, Germany, and Ecuador, they know that a Juniata education will be truly global in scope—even if they never leave Pennsylvania.

From its beginnings as a small recruiting session to its present incarnation as an event designed to get students over the next step toward internships or employment, Juniata’s Career Fair has expanded to a weeklong session of interviewing, advice, and networking. The fair attracts more than 400 students every year and draws more than 100 businesses, including some Fortune 500 companies.

There’s no need to feel defensive about the everimproving track record for Juniata athletics. Kate McDonald is only the most recent player honored as coach Danny Young ’00 drives the women’s basketball team to success.

Not many colleges would allow a student committee to bring in a nationally known musical act and stage the concert in one of the most heavily used facilities on campus.

The concert drew a huge crowd and received publicity across central Pennsylvania.

While a spring-semester opinion piece in the Juniatian wondered if the budget might be applied elsewhere, who’s to say whether the experience organizing a major social event will result in award-winning entrepreneurial efforts once the students leave campus?

As we noted with the general giving chart on page 15, the decline in grant dollars for fiscal year 2014 has more to do with timing than with successful proposals. In fact, for fiscal year 2015, Juniata has already been awarded grants totaling more than the receipts for all of fiscal year 2014. For fiscal year 2014, 41 new grants were awarded, totaling $675,658. Within the fiscal year, $883,524 was received from grants in operation, including some awards made in prior fiscal years.

Art historian Karen Rosell, who organized the symposium, says hosting such events helps publicize Juniata’s respected museum-studies POE and spread the College’s reputation as an acclaimed institution for experiential learning in arts.

Juniata’s move to compete in the Division III Continental Volleyball Conference has opened the College to a wider territory of recruitment, which in turn gives Juniata a chance to compete for high achieving athletes in markets beyond Juniata’s traditional recruiting territories.

Lauren Bowen completes Juniata’s new leadership team, with four executives having been in their position for a year or less. The Liberal Arts Symposium delivers the message to students in every discipline that their academic program is valued at the College. Students from humanities, social sciences, IT, business, and natual sciences, can present their crowning achievements in research at the symposium.

April 25: Hilda Nathan Hall, the College’s first newly built residence hall since the 1970s, is dedicated.

Hilda Nathan Hall is the first physical step in Juniata’s next phase of development. With its single-room housing focus, the residence hall provides Juniata more campus housing options for upperclass students and a key resource for hosting summer camps and conferences in the future.

Juniata has sent a student nearly every year over the past decade to work in a Pennsylvania agency office as a paid intern. Creating opportunities to get handson experience in government has enabled many Juniatians—the majority of them politics POEs—to move easily into graduate school or jobs in politics.

Juniata’s politics department ensures our superb track record by utilizing its own network of faculty to prepare each student to apply. Sam Hayes Jr., a former Pennsylvania state representative and Secretary of Agriculture, helps prepare most of the candidates to compete for the Finnegan Fellowship.

Andrea’s talent also brought her accolades at this year’s Convocation as she received the Donald Rockwell Chemistry Scholarship.

Andrew was originally recruited to Juniata by men’s basketball coach Greg Curley, but Andrew quickly realized he wouldn’t have time to mix sports and science. He entered Juniata with his sights set on medical school, but after working at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute as part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Exceptional Research Opportunities Program, he’s decided to mix medicine and research. He will enter medical school next year.

Alyssa’s path through Juniata is paved with good intentions in the form of timely scholarships and awards. As a freshman, she received a John Stauffer Scholarship, which took care of her tuition bills. As a sophomore, she received an Eagles Abroad Scholarship that allowed her to study in Quito, Ecuador. These two experiences gave her the background and ambition to win her Fulbright. In addition, Alyssa also received the Homer Will Biology Scholarship and the Charles Ellis Memorial Scholarship.

John Kuriyan ’81, who runs one the nation’s most respected biochemistry labs at the University of California-Berkeley, tells almost everyone he meets that he wouldn’t be the scientist he is today without experiencing a Juniata education. The College would not have been able to offer Kuriyan a chance to experience the liberal arts without a local Huntingdon doctor, V.V. Rao. Dr. Rao established a scholarship to bring science students from India to the Juniata campus.

One of the most important issues in higher education, particularly for private colleges, is keeping students on campus throughout their educational career. Called “retention” or “student success” by enrollment professionals, this issue has most institutions trying multiple solutions to keep students from transferring or dropping out. As it happens, Juniata might have the upper hand in managing this trend because the College reigns supreme at helping first-generation college students cope and getting incoming freshmen involved in the campus community and more importantly, the Huntingdon community. Thus, the Class of 1964 focused its gift on retention and gave $1,419,550.64 to support Inbound, the nationally acclaimed program that asks freshmen to report a few days early in order to take part in common-interest activities and community programs.

No one’s light shined more brightly after leaving Juniata than former NFL coach Chuck Knox ’54, who went on to coach the L.A. Rams, the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks to playoff contention. At the same time, few have taken such a burning interest in Juniata’s athletic and academic success than the Hall of Fame coach.

Indeed, he chaired the committee to build Knox Stadium and donated $1 million to endow the Knox Chair in History (currently occupied by David Hsiung). As a coach, he also knew that athletic endeavors don’t always fit into a 9 to 5 schedule. So, when the

College decided to install lights in Knox Stadium, a decision that would provide flexibility in scheduling practices and games, Chuck and his wife, Shirley donated $200,000 of the $450,000 budget, challenging the College to raise the rest. Shirley, a Huntingdon native, liked that community high school teams could use the stadium as a resource for important games and playoffs and for other events. If Chuck were the credit-grabbing type, he could probably claim partial responsibility for Kraig Black’s significant gift, which nearly provided enough to complete the rest of the fundraising. It seems Kraig, a 1993 graduate and former Juniata football player, was recruited by, yes, Chuck Knox. All part of Juniata’s Circle of Lights.

Volunteer Support 2013-2014 Why do you participate in the Pittsburgh Juniata Club (JCPGH)?

The regional club events allow those associated with Juniata in some way to gather with one another to reconnect, network, and just have a great time.

How many years have you been involved?

I’ve been an active participant in the Club for three years.

Why do you think regional clubs and events are important?

The clubs aren’t limited to just alumni; they are open to parents, friends, and family as well. There are events for all interests including happy hours, baseball games, 5K races and everything in between. Regional clubs and events are an important part of the College because they allow alumni to connect and spread the word about Juniata and what it has to offer to potential students. The Alumni Office is great to work with and make it very easy to host alumni events. They’re willing to work with you to host an event even if you don’t live in a regional club area.

What kind of outcomes have you had from participating in JCPGH? I’ve experienced a personal satisfaction with the regional events.

The events offer opportunities to meet fellow alumni that you wouldn’t typically connect with on your own. For example, we held an event at Rivertowne Pour House Brewery in which we were able to get a personal tour by owner and operator, Andrew Maxwell ’96.

The Juniata Parents Council works with the College to support its programs and, ultimately, its students. The Council’s purpose is to involve parents who will help spread the word to other students and parents about Juniata, engage other parents in issues related to student success, and mentor students as they prepare for and embark on professional lives. This group formed in April 2009 and represents parents from various geographic regions, campus affiliations, and class years. The Council serves as a liaison between the College and the greater parent population.
