A Juniata education is a process of self-discovery. You’re here to write the story of you, and we’ll guide you as you think through that story.

Our students aren’t asked to choose a major but rather to write, with guidance from two faculty advisers, their own academic plan called a Program of Emphasis, or POE. Each POE blends the strongest interests and talents of a student into a cohesive course of study that satisfies curiosities, deepens knowledge, and builds excitement for a rewarding career.

Today’s Juniata students are preparing to enter a rapidly changing and highly competitive world in which they will inevitably be presented with complex problems to solve. The Juniata College Curriculum has been designed with this in mind.

EXPLORATORY BE EVERYWHERE

Freedom to explore.

As a student at Juniata, you’ll be learning a lot about yourself. You might arrive here sure of what it is you want to study, but then discover new interests you didn’t know you had, and end up choosing a surprising new path. Juniata encourages students to be open to new ideas, and grants every student the right to change his or her mind as they learn more about who they are and how they want to live their life. There are no “undeclared” students at Juniata, but you’ll find plenty of “exploratory” students here, actively engaged in defining their POE, and in the process, taking amazing classes that will inform their thinking in interesting ways.

We’ll connect you to real-world challenges in which you’ll gain experience to apply to your profession. You’ll learn how divergent disciplines intersect and become more meaningful. Expect to be in the classroom and labs but also out in the world. Research projects. Local, national, and international internships. Field experiences at Sparks Farm and our lakeside Raystown Field Station.

Six months after graduation, Juniata graduates’ careers are well underway. Those who have chosen to attend graduate school have hit their stride. Among them all, a full 97% say they feel their POE prepared them very well for the fields they entered.

Contagious enthusiasm for humanity: Meet a doctor of tomorrow.

Clay’s individualized POE proved the perfect starting place for a distinctive career in medicine. In collaboration with his Spanish adviser, Clay designed a transformative independent study in which he dove into the language that medical professionals in Spanishspeaking countries use to connect with patients. Clay’s caring attitude, combined with his career interests, has enabled him to become the kind of humanitarian that today’s health professions need. Now a Duke University Family Medicine resident in Durham, N.C., he recently took part in a highly selective World Health Organization UNICEF Global Conference on Primary Health Care in Kazakhstan—one of only 50 professionals accepted worldwide.

Sure, students love campus life here, but one of the most exciting aspects of coming to Juniata is the many opportunities we offer for studying abroad. We make sure every student has this opportunity: financial aid travels with the student, and we work with students to identify scholarships— for both academic merit and financial need—to offset the additional costs. Some students study at a university, taking courses that meet their Juniata graduation requirements. Others choose to pursue a dual-degree program, earning a bachelor’s degree from Juniata College and an equivalent undergraduate or master’s degree from a partner institution. Still others seek to gain professional experience at one of our internship sites in the U.K., France, and Spain; or take a service-learning trip to do research and work with doctors, farmers, and others around the world.

We hear from many families that most college tours are the same. When touring, they feel like just “one of the pack” and that no effort is made to personalize the experience. Not here.

We recognize that each student represents a unique mix of interests and talents and so our entire campus visit experience is designed with that in mind. We appreciate the effort families make to visit us and we want to make it worth your while when you are here.

Visit Juniata and experience an introduction to college life that puts you in the driver’s seat and gives you a taste of what our personalized education feels like.

Here, students get to sit in on classes they’re interested in, meet one-on-one with professors, and explore extracurricular interests like music or sports. And when you are on the tour, as an individual or part of a small group, every effort is made to provide a tour guide who has interests similar to yours.

Huntingdon, Pennsylvania—Juniata’s hometown—and the beautiful surrounding lake region are jam-packed with a wide range of places to go all year long. Raystown Lake, the largest inland lake in Pennsylvania, is visited by more than one million vacationers every summer.

There’s a wide range of amenities nearby, too, including Lincoln Caverns, art studios, downtown cafés and coffee shops, thrift stores, hiking trails, and a locally owned outdoors shop where they’ll set you up with a kayak to paddle down the Juniata River.
