ou might not believe it when we tell you people here wave at one another as they pass on the sidewalk. You might doubt it when we tell you that one night each spring, the physics students are rock stars. You might be skeptical that the prevailing smell on the breeze at our first big student welcome event is chocolate.

That’s fine. Some things—brownie breezes, the pyrotechnic flair of Physics Phun Night, the jovial thunder of students storming The Arch, the sheer amount of times people wave hello at you—you’ll have to wait to experience until you are a student.

Fortunately, most of what makes Juniata great—the welcoming community, the unusually open and green campus, the personalized attention and support of faculty, staff and peers committed to your success— is available anytime.

Figuring out Your Area(s) of Study “After I arrived at Juniata, I found myself a bit lost,” says Mike Thompson ’12, echoing many college students.

Thompson was interested in politics, history and Chinese language and culture.

So he turned to Alison Fletcher, associate professor of history, who encouraged him to study abroad and to get additional advice from politics professors Emil Nagengast and Jack Barlow, her fellow history professor Doug Stiffler, and philosophy professors Wade Roberts and Xinli Wang.

“My advisers, Donna Weimer and Judy Katz, helped to push me to become not only a better student but, a better person in the midst of dealing with the loss of my mother,” says Amber Thomas Rieger ’09. “I would have been overwhelmed had they not encouraged me to keep pursuing my goals no matter what life throws at me.”

Even if you’re not facing the kind of major life challenge Amber dealt with, advisers can help you learn the things that are important in life.

When asked about the secret to her success in securing an Environmental Protection Agency Greater Research Opportunities Fellowship, Cara Mayo ’13 will point to two professors, geologist Matt Powell and environmental scientist Neil Pelkey: “If I’ve ever wanted to start a project—like a garden—Professor Pelkey is always the first person I can count on to say, ‘OK, here are our first steps, let’s get this going.’”

“Advising for me was the doorway to realizing that Juniata’s community wasn’t just the awesome and caring student body, but also the professors, who want you to succeed as badly as you do,” Thompson says. “From helping me navigate my diverse interests, figuring out how to study abroad and always being available to talk something over, to crises about changing my major or deciding on graduate schools, I looked to my advisers. Professor Fletcher was a really important mentor for me.”

When Malea Hetrick ’10 was still a high school student, she sat in on Professor Emil Nagengast’s class. To her shock, he called on her.

“I stuttered that I was a prospective, and he asked if I would like to give an answer anyway,” Hetrick recalls. “I did, still stuttering unsurely, but also a little excitedly. I had just answered my first college question! When I got to Juniata, it was the same. Professor Nagengast taught me to think through my answers, to look at issues from a variety of angles, and to play devil’s advocate.”

One day, Nagengast recommended that Hetrick apply for the Finnegan Fellowship, which includes an internship in Pennsylvania government. He worked with her—long distance, as she was studying abroad—on her application and essay. After she was awarded the Fellowship and associated internship, Nagengast also mentored Hetrick on her law school application. Later he helped her choose a blended degree in law and social work.

“What is most astounding to me, now that I’ve been away from Juniata for a few years, is how much my Juniata mentors truly cared about me, personally and professionally,” Hetrick says. “And they still do. I know that if I send an email, I’ll get one back. And, if I stop by their office if I’m ever in town, that they’ll make time for me, just like they did when I was a student.”

Every college or university will give you an adviser to help you schedule classes and, above all, to make sure you graduate. At some schools, the advisers are graduate students. At others, like Juniata, they’re professors. Here, we give you two advisers, which is a distinct advantage in making sure all of your post-college needs will be covered. But what should you expect of the two faculty members who will help you mold your destiny?

The Zen of Ken: Juniata Student Interns Under Emmy-Winning Filmmaker

Monae DeWitt ’13 spent the fall of 2012 as an intern with Emmy Awardwinning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns at Florentine Films. Specifically, she worked on research and sound work for upcoming films on the Roosevelt family and other projects.

“I learned how film production works over lunches with writers and producers,” DeWitt says.

She even had the opportunity to master the “Ken Burns effect”—a method of panning the camera across photos to tell a story, a signature of Burns’ work on such projects as The Civil War and Baseball.

But DeWitt nearly had to pass up the opportunity. Florentine is located in a high cost-of-living area of New Hampshire and, despite saving her pennies during the preceding summer thanks to a more highly-paid film editing internship with Catholic Relief Services, she needed financial assistance to accept Burns’ offer.

The Juniata Alumni Internship Endowment funds approximately six students per year.

Last year’s recipients interned at an HIV/ AIDS Clinic in Mill Valley, Calif.; an industrial materials analysis, information management and industrial engineering firm in Monroeville, Pa.; the Louisiana State University School of Renewable Natural Resources in Baton Rouge, La.; the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.; and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston in Houston, Texas.

So she applied to Juniata’s Alumni Internship Endowment. She submitted the job description associated with her internship and interviewed in front of a panel of Juniata faculty, administrators and Career Services staff.

During the same week, DeWitt was interviewing, via Skype, with Florentine.

And, even though she had to juggle time to coordinate her offer from Florentine and negotiations with Juniata’s internship committee, all of her efforts finally paid off thanks to alumnus Dr. Scott Snyder ’85.

“I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to pursue my dream,” DeWitt says.

“People at Juniata connected me with people they knew and then I was able to carry it the rest of the way on my own.”

Although DeWitt doesn’t know what’s next, she discovered her biggest interests are producing and editing.

FEAR FACTOR Navigating from College to Career While the prospect of choosing, applying to, and getting accepted into a college fitting your requirements can be stressful, the chaos doesn’t end there. For many students, the vital question is— what next? But, once you arrive on Juniata’s campus, you’re not alone. The College’s Career Services office will help you with more than just your résumé. In addition to helping students with searching for jobs and networking, the office also organizes a number of helpful workshops specific to your needs.

Etiquette 101 One popular Career Services’ activity held every year is Etiquette Dinner. Professional image consultant and etiquette expert Dede Kazmaier conducted a formal dinner for 80 students, during which she covered the do’s and don’ts of etiquette in a business setting. “This was a fun and interesting way to learn essential things, like which fork to use and how to conduct oneself during a formal dinner— things everyone takes for granted but should pay more attention to,” says Airokhsh Faiz Qaisary ’15.

Career Services Goes Global In collaboration with the Center for International Education, Darwin Kysor, director of career services at Juniata, hosted a workshop on job searching and networking, specifically targeted to students who are not U.S. citizens. Concise and practical, the event focused on the government requirements students must fulfill in order to live and work in the United States after their courses end.

As a student interested in writing, I attended a workshop hosted by my academic department— English—featuring a few alumni: freelance writers Nicole and Brian Engard, who are both graduates of the Juniata Class of 2001. The duo conducted an hour long discussion on breaking into the professional writing market. Nicole writes columns, books and blogs on open-source software and Brian writes narratives for role-playing games. The two offered a lot of sound advice on writing professionally, including the importance of having editors and beta readers, building a style, finding your audience and, most importantly, dealing with rejection.`

<<< Expert A|lert >>> Connections Bring Experience to the Classroom By Genna Welsh Kasun ’06 In a fast-paced world, students often wonder: how relevant is what I’m learning right now? In anticipation of helping students to land a dream career in a tough job market, Juniata professors conduct research, work as consultants and volunteer to keep their teaching fresh. And they also network, bringing in guest lecturers who are practicing professionals from the “so-called” real world—and we don’t mean the MTV show.

Executive Decisions

Business, economics and accounting experts—many of them Juniata alumni— add new life to Juniata classes by sharing their expertise from corporations they’ve worked at like QVC, Palladium Capital Advisors, Caterpillar and Bechtel Group. When they’re not helping out in class, they buoy students by doing oneon-one mentoring sessions, offering advice on careers and life in general.

State of the Union

The politics department at Juniata has called on two experts recently: Keith Pesto, a federal appeals court judge, and Sam Hayes, former Pennsylvania house majority leader. Hayes draws on his experience to teach a course called State Legislative Process and Pesto teaches Law of Nations and Church and State. “We bring the theoretical and philosophical expertise, and Keith and Sam bring experience from where the rubber hits the road,” says Emil Nagengast, professor of politics.

“They’ve been instrumental in helping students land internships and jobs in state and federal government as well as awards such as the Finnegan Fellowship.”

Juniata’s theatre program is kind of unusual—but in a good way. Instead of classic training alone, our students enjoy a holistic program that’s based on expertise. Our two Juniata professors have been on stage and screen in New York, Seattle, and Dublin, Ireland. And, our Gravity Partners program brings in 25 expert actors, choreographers, directors and producers from D.C., Chicago, Tucson, and more each semester. These stars bring in expertise ranging from trapeze, comedic technique and improve to practical skills like marketing their work, networking, and auditioning for major networks.

Farmville

Farming has been in Grace Fala’s blood for generations, and, although she grew up in Philadelphia, she always wanted to own farm animals.

“My forays into farming started with ducks and then expanded to include horses, chickens and a rooster that decided that it wanted to stay,” says Fala, professor of communication, explaining the rooster’s escape from a nearby Amish farm. “The perks of having all these farm animals around is that there is always a supply of fresh organic eggs and the possibility of a buggy ride if the weather permits it.” oto Ph

Fala also plays harmonica and guitar in a variety of genres including rock, pop, and the blues. While the horses have a decided ear for music, gathering to listen to performances at times, the rooster takes offense at the perceived competition.

Most of the beagles were abandoned because of blindness, old age, injury or inability to hunt. But the Echols don’t mind. Their residence is currently home to 14 beagles, three cats, four rabbits, three guinea pigs and three mice.

Only a few years after Ann Echols, assistant professor of business, and her husband were married, they decided to start a family.

So, they adopted their first dog—a terrier-beagle mix called Remington.

Unfortunately, Remington suffered from separation anxiety and could not be left alone, prompting the Echols to get him a beagle companion. In rescuing a second pet, the Echols landed their names on the call lists of various beagle rescue organizations and were often inundated with pleas for help, which eventually led to the adoption of 38 dogs—though the most they have had at the same time is 22 dogs.

English professors Hannah Bellwoar, Carol Peters and Donna Weimer, professor of communication, have one thing in common—a love of board games. For Bellwoar, the relationship with board games, particularly European ones, began in grad school when her husband introduced her to Settlers of Catan.

“They make for great conversation starters as well.”

Today, Bellwoar and her husband own about 600 board games, and they attend three to four game conventions every year. Some of their best memories are associated with board games, like their engagement—which took place at a board game convention—and a memorable holiday aboard a boardgame cruise in the Bahamas!

Richard Hark has been interested in magic and swords since he was a child, but he never really outgrew the fascination. So, about a dozen years ago, he started collecting swords and bayonets—mainly from 19th and early 20th century Europe. And, even though Hark is a chemist, the history and artistry of each piece is his chief interest. The engravings on the hilt, the inscriptions, the metal used and how it was forged—all hold clues to the story behind each eBay and Arms and Armor Fair purchase.

School of Rock Dom Peruso’s parents were instrumental in helping him realize his love for drumming. He started drumming in the fourth grade and took formal lessons through college. Over the years, Peruso, professor of accounting, has been a part of a number of bands performing progressive rock, heavy metal and jazz in Huntingdon hangouts like Mimi’s Restaurant and Boxer’s pub—channeling his favorite drummer Jack DeJohnette. On campus, Peruso has jammed with fellow professors, administrators and even the College president.

The Mod Quad: By: Semanti Ray ’13 “To me, the most important piece of the quad is a wooden bench. My boyfriend, Ryan Mathur ’96, and I would often sit on this bench to have a few quiet minutes to talk without our roommates.

We loved that bench. We even had our engagement pictures taken there, years later. Now the von Liebig Center for Science sits right on top of it. But, I’m not sad about that: it’s fitting that the lab built on top of our spot is devoted to chemistry.”

“The volleyball club sets up a net and the ultimate frisbee team usually comes out to throw a disk or two. And, on special occasions, somebody will set up a slackline between some of the trees and you get to watch as people attempt to stand and walk on the line.

A Gathering Place When you walk toward Ellis Hall from the Enrollment Center for the first time, there’s an inconspicuous patch of green that we at Juniata call “the Quad.” It may seem ordinary looking, but, in reality, that space is a very important part of Juniata. According to Belle Tuten, professor of history at Juniata, campus quadrangles are remnants of the Middle Ages, when each monastery—which were then centers for learning—had a central green space where monks could fulfill their physical and recreational needs. When monasteries turned into universities, students also saw the benefits of a quad, just as Juniata students do now. But don’t just take our word for it.

“There is something about lying in the grass under the sun with friends and professors bustling by that really typifies the college social scene for me. My group of friends have nicknamed a large tree near Founders Hall the ‘homey tree’ since that's where all my homeys congregate to do work and enjoy life.”

Vintage Buy s Shopping for Value

“Last year I bought a black cotton dress—I kind of felt like Madonna in it—and it's one of my absolute favorite dresses to wear. It was only $8.”

You might know Huntingdon, Pa., the home of Juniata College, as one of America’s Coolest Small Towns—as recorded by Budget Travel. With nearby attractions like the Allegrippis biking trails, Pennsylvania’s largest inland lake and many gorgeous geological formations, its reputation for natural beauty is secure. But the Borough of Huntingdon is full of unique shops that have gems of their own. One Juniata student, Laura Whitman ’13 even has a blog about it at http://lauraisthriftingthroughlife.blogspot.com/. A few students recently shared their best finds from Huntingdon’s many secondhand stores.

Ariel Lawver ’13 frequents Twice Upon a Time, a resale shop in downtown Huntingdon for dresses and business-appropriate skirts.

“Last year I bought a black cotton dress,” Lawver recalls. “I kind of felt like Madonna in it, and it’s one of my absolute favorite dresses to wear. It was only $8.”

In addition to buying because it’s sustainable and financially savvy—two qualities many Juniata students value—Lawver adds, “You can redesign clothes and not feel bad if you mess them up.”

Bader M. Noaimi, an international student at Juniata, has a different shopping hangout: Way Cool Comics, which carries posters, graphic novels, magazines, action figures and other collectibles from all of his favorite comics like The Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Hulk, Robin, Teen Titans, Justice Society of America, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Flash.

“It’s one of the best shopping experiences in town, aside from the bargain video game store and the used book store,” Noaimi says. “I have frequented over 15 comic book stores in my travels to California, New York and Washington, D.C., and, by far, this is the best store because of the potential you have to buy everything you want without having to worry about budgeting.”

Comic culture at Juniata is at an all-time high, so Noaimi created a new student organization, the Comic Book Club. They hold meetings, recently hosted Juniata’s first “NerdCon” and they visit Way Cool Comics on nights when the owner brings in artists and writers as guests, which, Noaimi points out,“is not something you'd expect from such a small store.”

Two Views on Studying Abroad

Clay Cooper ’13 and Ana Sofia Borja are both studying abroad. Borja, who is from Quito, Ecuador, is studying abroad here at Juniata. And, Cooper, who is from Hummelstown, Pa., studied abroad in Sofia’s hometown of Quito, Ecuador.

Recently, the two got together to share a few notes on the differences and similarities about being a stranger in a strange land.

Black Friday Shopping at 5 a.m. in New York City—"I even had a hot dog in the street!"

A sweater. It is so comfortable and warm.

Classes taken while abroad…

Environmental Economics, Philosophy of Religion, Financial Markets and Institutions, and International Political Economy.

Spending time with my host family and going to La Ronda, a colonial alley in the historical center where you could walk around at night while sipping on hot chocolate.

What I did for fun…

Walking and window shopping with friends.

Llapangachos. They are fried potato patties made with fresh cheese in the middle.

Favorite food from abroad…

A hamburger with portobello mushrooms from Mimi's Restaurant.

For my geology class, we took a field trip to an active volcano, and I was able to travel to the Galapagos Islands and see the Amazon River.

Best learning experience…

In a class about entrepreneurialism, we visited a local coffeeshop and heard about how the owner brings community building into his business.

How warm, friendly and helpful everybody was to me. Whenever I needed anything, somebody was always available and yet many of those around me had so little.

What surprised me most…

The variety of cereals in the grocery store.

And, on the other hand, the lack of fresh, cheap fruit and veggies.

Trust, thankfulness, independence.

Studying abroad taught me…

Freedom.

All in for Altruism

Spending Spring Break on Service Projects

Not all college students crave the fun in the sun lure of beach parties and karaoke contests. In fact, several groups of Juniata students who headed south for spring break 2013 took on service projects such as working with migrant worker families and building new homes.

“Students on the trips met new people that share a common interest and together we were able to learn about and serve a new community,” says Erin Kreischer ’13, who headed to Albany, Ga., in March 2013 with Juniata’s Habitat for Humanity chapter.

Kreischer isn’t alone in feeling the desire to learn and serve.

“I’ve worked as a carpenter for a few years and the site manager saw that, so he had me lead a group of people, something that I have not done before,” says Gus Redmond ’14, also a member of Juniata’s Habitat for Humanity club. “I helped people learn how to use tools and put things together, and I learned a lot about working with other people.”

Habitat for Humanity isn’t the only alternative spring break option for Juniata students. The college’s Hillel chapter travelled to the Dominican Republic to build shelters. Juniata’s Christian Ministry Board travelled to North Fort Myers, Fla., to volunteer on a farm and the Community Service Board headed to Apopka, Fla., to work with immigrant families.

“Students live with host families and get the chance to learn about the many struggles Apopka, Fla., has endured, including poverty, unemployment, racial tensions and gang violence,” says Abbey Baird, director of community service and service learning at Juniata.

But the trips aren’t strictly serious, either.

“We also got to go see a manatee preserve in Tampa and visit Sanibel Island for a day at the beach,” says Emma Ruggery ’13, who participated in the Campus Ministry Board trip to Florida. “I would highly recommend this to others.”
