You might be skeptical that the prevailing smell on the breeze at our first big student welcome event is chocolate.

That’s fine. Some things—brownie breezes, the pyrotechnic flair of Physics Phun Night, the jovial thunder of students storming The Arch, the sheer amount of times people wave hello at you—you’ll have to wait to experience until you are a student.

aitlin Bigelow ’11 took a bit of this, a bit of that and produced an academic Program of Emphasis (POE) for the ages or at least her wellaged interests. She created her own titled “International Venture Creation.”

Sure she was in the classroom: taking entrepreneurism, international studies, Spanish, art and marketing. But, like most Juniata students, Caitlin undertook hands-on experiences like working in the College marketing department, where she shared her experiences by writing in this publication, the Juniata Admission Magazine, and on her blog. Here are a few other opportunities that led Caitlin to her current career.

Caitlin opted to begin her own business at Juniata through the Sill Business Incubator. She still operates “Something Sunny” (check it out on Facebook), a company that produces artistic frames, cards, prints and stationery.

Club: PAX-O Event: Empty Bowls

“Empty Bowls is an annual fundraiser we host to help stop hunger in Huntingdon. I enjoy it so much because the only way it can be successful is through community involvement. Other clubs on campus help out by making bowls to use and providing members to help serve soup. In addition, many local restaurants provide help by donating, soup, bread, drinks and silverware.

It is always one of the biggest club events and we usually serve around 300 people. What does PAX-O stand for? PAX-O \PAKS-oh\ noun: 1. A group that will change the world; 2. Juniata’s student peace organization.”

Club: Big Brothers, Big Sisters Event: Trip to J.B. Tree Farm and Corn Maze

“In the fall, we planned an event to J.B. Tree Farm. We went on a hayride, navigated through a corn maze, visited with reindeer and went through a harvest playground. Both the kids (littles) and the Juniata students (bigs) loved it.”

Club: Pet and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) Event: Stress Busters: Pet Therapy Series

“Every semester, we have at least two pet therapy sessions for students— one featuring dogs and one for cats.

And we always provide some snack that starts with the same letter as the animal (‘Dogs & Donuts,’ ‘Cats & Cupcakes,’ etc.) I love these events because they are a fun, stress-free activity for students, and the animals just adore the extra attention. I didn’t have any experience in leadership before founding PAWS in 2009, but the students, faculty and staff at Juniata were extremely supportive and encouraging about my ideas, and this club has blossomed from that support.”

Club: Hillel Event: Service here and in Uruguay

“Hillel does many service projects in Huntingdon in connection with the Huntington congregation. But, we also have an annual spring break trip. I enjoy getting to travel and do handson work. I enjoyed our Uruguay trip because we got to work with a family to build a house; the individuals we worked with were truly empowered.

And, we were able to build three houses in two days. Next Spring Break we will be traveling to Argentina and working to renovate a school.”

Club: Habitat for Humanity Event: Alternative Spring Break

“During the Spring Break of my freshman year, I traveled down to New Orleans in the Lower Ninth Ward. We had the opportunity to really see how everything is down there. It was still a mess but slowly recovering. Luckily, we got to help out with that. I made a lot of great friends and met a lot of great people down there. I learned that there are a lot of other people in the world who have it a lot worse than I do and that I should do whatever I can to put others before myself.”

Club: Circle K Event: Mr. Juniata Pageant

“The event I have most enjoyed during my time with Circle K has absolutely been our annual Mr. Juniata pageant—a spoof of beauty pageants with male contestants. By participating in this event, I became aware of all the background work that must be done in order to present a show such as Mr. Juniata—tasks that I didn’t even know existed! The best lesson that I learned from this event was how crucial it is to communicate with your team members. I’ve always appreciated the concepts of communication and teamwork, but I learned from this experience how much I truly value them.”

Seeing an Exhibition from Both Sides

When I realized my piece was going to be judged, I was ecstatic. Seeing your own work, in a setting like the museum gallery space, is pretty exhilarating. Your time and effort pays off when you see the final product mounted and lit for your friends and peers to observe.

The eye painting was a project I completed last year during my intermediate painting class.

The project itself was a self-portrait piece, and my first inclination was to focus on a specific facial feature or attribute. I find eyes to be the most expressive of features, so I decided to abstract my own eye. The whole concept of the painting was pretty simple, but I really enjoyed the experimental quality of the piece, adding and subtracting elements like the lettering and the labels. I was pretty surprised that it made it into the student show.

The Artistic Eye

The Exhibitionist’s P.O.V.

The Curator’s P.O.V. The ability to have hands-on curatorial experience at the undergraduate level is amazing.

And, having practicum students curate the Student Exhibition makes the exhibit about the students from start to finish. My experiences have made me grow as a curator and as a manager. And, I’ve been given an avenue to connect with great students who I may not have met otherwise.

Elaina’s artwork was an exceptional piece and is a great credit to her abilities as an artist.

The plastic silverware flowers were also original and creative.

I thought they were a great way of showcasing a different kind of threedimensional piece. It was very interesting to make something so organic, like a flower, out of plastic silverware, which usually becomes trash.

Both pieces were strong and showcased the talents of the artists.

Blowtorches and Ray Bans A Look into Juniata’s Glass Class

J

uniata chemistry professor David Reingold casually fires up one of the torches and holds a piece of glass to the flame. It starts to lose shape and turns white hot. He puts it to his lips and blows a quick breath into it. A molten glass bubble forms. And that’s why it is called glass blowing.

This isn’t a science class at Juniata nor is it strictly an art class—it’s a hybrid. Juniata’s studio is tucked away in a small room in a nondescript corner of the basement of von Liebig Center for Science. Five blowtorches face the wall, and a few stools and industriallooking machinery fill up the rest of the room.

Glass art and science departments have a lot more common history than might be expected. Glass blowing is a skilled art form put into practical scientific application, and Juniata has had an operating glass studio since 1965. Most university science departments used to have in-house glass blowers, who repaired cracked or broken glass equipment and also created specialty items that were either very expensive or not available on the market.

As glassware became more available and the Internet took over, in-house

glass blowers became an outdated necessity, as did their expertise.

“Are there mishaps very often?”

Reingold asks his class jokingly. “One student sliced his finger pretty bad last week and everyone will burn and cut themselves at least once.”

All students have to wear safety glasses, but not those clunky, coverthree-quarters-of-your-face plastic frames. They are kind of a Ray-Ban knock-off, a necessity not just to protect your face from occasional sparks, but also because the glass turns such a brilliant white that, without the tint of the glasses, no one would be able to see what they are working on.

“When else am I going to have the opportunity to do this?” says Hannah Frank, a senior from Altoona, Pa. Even though the course is chemistry related, there are no science prerequisites to take it. There isn’t a correlation between innate science skills and glass-blowing prowess. Nor is it purely art. Of teaching this skill set to students Reingold adds, “Students have a lot of fun with it and learn something useful.” n

Quidditch Club Instead of being a regimented sport like basketball or rugby, quidditch has a free and silly atmosphere not unlike a game of red rover at recess. It also requires imagination. I started a quidditch club at Juniata because I played in high school and had a blast!

Do the Charleston with the Social Dancing Club or dig dodgeball with the Gym Class Club. Juniata boasts 94 student organizations. This is simply a sampling of the athletic-themed club offerings.

The Hellbenders: Juniata’s Women’s Rugby Club

“As the name suggests we are dedicated to the study and practice of self-defense and martial arts techniques. We study and practice the methods of Krav Maga (Hebrew for ‘Full body fighting’), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Dutch Style Thai Boxing. We do not force individuals to go past their limits, however, we do encourage them to test them. One of my personal favorite slogans I use to encourage everyone to continue giving it their all is, ‘We don’t get tired, we get better.’”

The Juniata College Self-Defense and Mixed Martial Arts Club

“Every year we run a ‘formal’ fundraiser by playing in the ugliest dresses possible to wear.

All the proceeds are donated to the Huntingdon House, a shelter for battered women and children.

The slogan is ‘keeping violence on the field.’ We are a very tight-knit team with a lot of traditions, including playing the alumni on homecoming weekend. We also play nearby colleges and universities and often make it to playoffs. Although it may sound clichéd, our team really is like a family. And, rugby is a wonderful way to stay in shape.”

A Compass, A Map and the Wild: Taking Business to the 2,000-Foot Level

Forget GPS devices. Juniata business students navigate with maps and compasses.

C

ommonly known around campus as H.O.B.O., this class could be straight out of Discovery Channel’s Man Versus Wild except the professors aren’t about to make you eat worms.

The class is actually called Behavioral Analysis of Organizations (it’s previous title spelled H.O.B.O.) and is open to all students. After all interpersonal and managerial skill are important to most POEs and many careers, too. In this course, you spend the first half of the class building a close relationship with your group and developing organizational skills. The second half you put those new-found relationships to the test, traversing the rugged Allegheny Mountains and meeting three checkpoints with nothing but a compass, a map and your teammates.

Randy Rosenberger, associate professor of business, has been teaching the class and leading the hike for 14 years. He explains, “Suddenly students are faced with real-life consequences to their actions.”

Things didn’t always go as smoothly as they do now. The first year Rosenberger and colleague Bill Duey taught the class, they misjudged where the start point was by a quarter of a mile. You may not think initially that’s a big deal—turns out it is. Four hours into the hike only one group had made it to checkpoint one. Meaning, 25 students were unaccounted for.

Rosenberger explains: “I was worried and I felt responsible. I had gone and planned this and now

students were missing. I remember thinking, ‘Am I going to lose my job?’” Eventually, they were found six hours later on the wrong side of the designated ridge.

What, no cell phone calls? “Well first off this was 14 years ago. People didn’t have cell phones,” Rosenberger explains. “Plus, cell service up there is terrible.”

“It’s intriguing to me to see how classmates react to things they aren’t used to doing. I feel like everyone should take the class even if you don’t need to because it’s really a worthwhile experience,” says Jordan Baird ’11, a student hike leader. “Juniata prides itself on diverse classes and I think HOBO makes the school stand out as far as interesting and different academic programs.” n juniata / Fall ’11

eing part of a team can be one of the most rewarding things you can do in college.

We have 10 people on our team and we needed everyone. Just because you’re a freshman doesn’t mean you can’t be a big impact. Everyone hustled their butts off. It was really cool because with a team as small as ours no one can hide and everyone contributes. We don’t have any tension between the team; we battle things out like a family. We don’t hold grudges and if something’s wrong we talk about it. We don’t want anyone to be scarred. We want communication.

How do you know if you are a good fit for a team?

Definitely come and stay for an overnight. It’s an opportunity to get to know the team ahead of time. When I was a recruit the entire team came up to Eagles Landing café to meet me and they didn’t have to. That said a lot to me.

With such a large team how do you go about getting to know each other?

It takes a while for the upperclassman to get acquainted with the new players but one of the ways we expedite the process is through our mentor program. Each freshman gets an upperclassman, broken down by position groups.

We make sure they get to practice on time, complete their lifting schedule, and help them academically.

What’s the hardest thing for freshmen to get used to?

I think learning and memorizing the playbook is the most challenging thing. It’s a big learning curve. But, we expect our freshmen to compete right away. We don’t treat the freshmen any different than anyone else on the team and we respect each other. In practice, you compete.

What kind of cool things do you do as a team off the field?

We do all kinds of awesome bonding activities.

This past Valentine’s Day we made Valentine’s Day cards to pass out at a veteran’s hospital. One of the veterans started to tear up because he was so happy and pretty soon we had 15 teary-eyed soccer players too.

How do you incorporate freshmen right away and make them feel at home?

We eat meals together, hang out together, play together and help them in ways beyond the soccer field. I remember as a freshman some of the girls showed me how to get a tutor, access my student drive, and where offices were. It was like getting the inside scoop immediately.

What was the transition like? And do you have any advice for freshmen coming in?

I went from being the oldest to being the youngest and leadership wise that’s a different role. In high school our team wasn’t that serious. We had a good top seven but most people were out there just to play a sport. I always tried to do extra stuff. I always went running on Sundays for example.

Basically just work your hardest. Whatever coach tells you to do that day you do. No shortcuts.

Andy Orr’s Persistent Job Search

I

nternships can lead to fantastic jobs. Sounds simple, right? Ask Andy Orr ’10, who searched for a job in the recent recession. Andy’s path from unemployed undergrad to savvy professional is, in large part, thanks to his diversified internships and plain old persistence.

August 2010: The Career Services office forwards Andy an internship opportunity at Cisney & O’Donnell Professional Remodelers & Custom Builders. He checks it out and submits an application—even though he’s looking for a full-time job— and keeps pursuing other employment.

September 2010: A full-time position opens at Cisney & O’Donnell just days after Andy interviewed for the internship.

After applying at 45 companies and experiencing eight job interviews, Andy secures employment as a full-time Sales Associate and Estimator. Now he’s incorporating solar energy into a new build—for Juniata’s President Tom Kepple and his wife, Pat.

Fall 2009: At the beginning of his senior year, Andy interns as a Career Peer Consultant for Juniata’s Career Services Office.

His ideas are golden—Juniata holds more networking events now than ever before.

May 2010: Andy graduates from Juniata with a B.S. in human resource management with a secondary emphasis in psychology. The job search begins…

Today: Is Andy using his degree? “At Juniata, I honed my ability to learn. It’s not so much about what it was I was learning, but how,” Andy points out. And, if you think he’s finished with his education, think again. Andy takes classes like Blueprint Reading at the PA Construction Academy, explores sustainable strategies and delves into computer assisted design.

Andy’s Advice: “I want others to know: Not everyone is a superstar kid who can land a lucrative job immediately. You don’t have to be a senator’s son or have a 4.0. Just get out there, on the grind and find a place to work.” juniata / Fall ’11

Talk about a cool start to a Tuesday morning.

He just didn’t realize it at the time.

“I lived in a crowded house,” he says of his formative years. “My grandparents lived on the top floor. My immediate family lived on the second floor. My aunt, uncle and four kids were on the first and two uncles were in the

basement. My mom used to send me to the movies to get me out of her hair.”

As Trim began to grow up he started traveling to Manhattan to see the movies. “As far as I was concerned there was no film too weird for me. The weirder the better. But, I watch almost no TV. Which is actually good for me.” He pauses, and chuckles, “I make better TV by not watching TV.” During his time at Juniata he often tried to bring in racy, controversial films for the students and was often shot down. He laughed, “They said no to Pink Flamingos”—a low-budget dark comedy starring a plus-sized drag queen. “Hey, it was the ’70s!”

Shortly after Trim arrived at Juniata he developed a reputation as the ‘film guy’ and became the head of the Film and Cinema Club, something, he notes, “I only could have done at a place like Juniata.” Now, as an Emmy-winning “TV guy,” he has the opportunity to influence future filmmakers.

Anne Wakabayashi ’11, who recently took Juniata’s Politics and Film class, summed it up perfectly when she said, “It’s really beneficial for students interested in cinema and film to have a real-life model in front of them. Juniata has such a great community. I thought it was cool that someone who has gone as far and done as much as he has is still coming back to campus and involved in Juniata.” n

Think You Won’t Get Scholarships At Juniata? Think Again!

J

uniata offers an array of competitive scholarships that recognize the outstanding achievements of incoming students without regard to financial need. Academic Scholarships at Juniata reward students who do well academically, but also

contribute to their school and community by getting involved. For most scholarships at Juniata, all you have to do is apply to be considered!

The Distinguished Scholars Awards present opportunities for students who have achieved National Merit, National Hispanic Recognition or National Achievement Finalist status as determined by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. One will earn the W. Clay & Kathryn H. Burkholder Scholarship, valued at over $175,000 over four years, which covers all tuition, room and board, fees and books. Other eligible for Ronald L. Cherry or Richard M. Simpson Scholarships, valued at over $130,000 over four years, which cover full tuition. Candidates will be interviewed. Those selected must submit official notification of Finalist status and indicate Juniata as their final choice college.

James Quinter Scholarships, valued at $80,000 over four years ($20,000 per year), honor the College’s first president. Students whose cumulative GPA is 3.75 or better and who receive at least a 1320 (M+V)/30 ACT Composite or better are eligible for consideration.

Calvert Ellis Scholarships, valued at up to $68,000 over four years (up to $17,000 per year), honor the president who led Juniata in the postWorld War II era. These scholarships range from $10,000 to $17,000 per year and are determined by a review of the student’s academic, extracurricular and community achievements.

Counselor Recommended Awards—Heritage and Ray Day Scholarships, valued between $2,000 and $8,000 per year, are awarded to students who show commitment to academic excellence, leadership and community service that culminate in a level of understanding among diverse groups.
