Dear Friends, This issue of Juniata includes some tremendous words: Nobel, Google, talent, lifetime achievement, community, excellence, peace, and championship.

I also appreciate—and I think it’s no coincidence— that we received more photos for our recurring feature, “I met a Juniata alum in the most unusual place,” than we have in years. The achievements of our students and the story of the College compels people in organizations and communities around the world.

The cover of this magazine depicts an alumna who is pretty happy about where she works. One key part of her journey was our Juniata Associates program, detailed on the pages that follow. We have long focused on the value of experience at Juniata. We also know the world looks for demonstrable ability in college graduates. For us, the priority is to provide experience without sacrificing the greater task of educating the whole person. We can do both—and this story shows how.

Donna Weimer, Thornbury Professor of Communication and chair of the communication and theatre arts department at Juniata, was named the recipient of the Robert T. Oliver Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Communication Association (PCA). Weimer accepted the award, which honors PCA members for their extensive work in teaching, research, service, and development in all areas of human communication, on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, during the final banquet at the 78th Annual Conference of the PCA, held at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Having been active in the association since her years as a graduate student at Penn State, Weimer has held every major office on the PCA executive committee, including serving as editor for the Pennsylvania Communication Annual for more than six years.

“I am truly honored and humbled to be recognized for this prestigious award and I am thankful for the rich and rewarding relationships and experiences that were cultivated throughout my membership with the PCA,” Weimer says.

“Donna Weimer is an outstanding colleague, an extraordinary teacher, and a dedicated member of every organization to which she contributes,” says Ron Arnett, executive director of the PCA. “The Association is honored to recognize her as an extraordinary colleague and leader.”

Her foremost research interest revolves around 21st-century technologies and their impact on the way we think and organize ourselves.

“Donna’s dedication and devotion to students is unparalleled and her commitment to student learning and success is most worthy of this recognition,” says Lauren Bowen,

Juniata’s provost. “She is a respected teacher and revered adviser who goes above and beyond to provide meaningful learning experiences for students, including facilitating the Bailey Oratorical, overseeing senior theses, ensuring participation in national conferences to present research, identifying internships, and so much more.”

In September 2017, students, alumni, and faculty from Juniata gathered at the College’s Elizabeth Evans Baker Peace Chapel, ready to host a bioblitz. A 24-hour assessment of the flora and fauna in the vicinity, the bioblitz was not only a data collection event, but an opportunity for community members to interact with experts who are conducting outreach and education.

During the bioblitz, biology and environmental science faculty and alumni served as experts, leading surveys of moths, invertebrates, plants, mammals, herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians), and birds. Travis Russell ’13 led the bird and herpetofauna surveys, Taylor Clark ’17 served as an expert for the bird surveys, and Paul Dennehy ’10 served as a moth expert.

“It was awesome to see alumni come back to help out and be so engaged in the bioblitz,” says Shannan Davidow ’18, who helped facilitate the event for her capstone project.

Annemarie Sciarra ’19, who served as a volunteer at the event, says, “I loved that we were collecting and observing species with alumni who are professionals in these wildlife fields. They had so much valuable information to contribute.”

The event also included an education tent where experts offered educational sessions for community members and their children about the wildlife groups they were surveying.

By the end of the assessment, experts and volunteers produced a total of 664 observations at the bioblitz. This included 23 species of birds, two species of reptiles, eight species of amphibians, 46 species of insects, and 130 unique species of plants. Of the species documented, 70.8 percent were native species.

“If you really want to protect the environment, you need to understand the role all of the species play and their interrelatedness,” says Uma Ramakrishnan, professor of environmental science and studies, who co-organized the event.

Ramakrishnan worked with Alexander Bischer ’17 and Emma Johnson ’17 as they planned the bioblitz event last spring for their senior capstone project. This fall, Davidow took the reins, working with middle- and high-school teachers in the area to invite students and their families to the event. The team designed the event to include more than 100 community members.

“You hear about the National Park Service doing events like this because it’s a good experience for the environment and a cool way to get the community involved,” says Davidow. “I think this project will help me stand out to organizations when I’m applying for a job. Planning an event like this will show I have organizational skills, networking expertise, and experience working a lot of data—data that I’ve actually collected.”

The Juniata team who hosted the event hopes it will become an annual tradition.

Small School, Big Strides: Juniata Presented with Prevention Excellence Award

In June 2017, Juniata College was honored with a Prevention Excellence Award at the ninth annual Campus Prevention Network (CPN) Summit presented by EVERFI, Inc. The award recognizes Juniata for its commitment to upholding the highest standards in preventing sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking.

Juniata is one of only five colleges across the U.S. to be honored. Other colleges and universities honored include American University, Dartmouth College, Vanderbilt University, and the State University of New York at Buffalo.

CPN representatives visited Juniata’s campus to hold an award ceremony in September 2017. During their visit, they shared a few of the reasons why they selected the College for the Prevention Excellence Award, each of which stems from the fact that Juniata is a small institution but is making great strides in terms of sexual assault or violence prevention. One of these factors includes the campus community’s dedication to prevention efforts.

“So many faculty and staff have committed themselves to getting bystander intervention training so they can be prepared to provide modeling and support to students,” says Holly Rider-Milkovich, senior director of prevention education at the CPN.

“We appreciate the recognition inherent in the EVERFI award and are proud of the measures we take as a College to combat interpersonal violence,” says Juniata President James A. Troha. “What

makes Juniata’s approach unique and successful is the empowerment of people to use their voice and actions to create substantial changes.”

To create a safe, respectful, and healthy campus for all students, the College’s Title IX staff are all professionally trained by nationally recognized Title IX experts like the Association for Title IX Administrators, the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management, and Magna Publications. Juniata’s students, faculty, and staff also utilize EVERFI’s HAVEN, an online training course on understanding sexual assault.

Juniata also partners with community agencies to enhance prevention efforts. As such, the College recognized local partners at the oncampus award ceremony. Community collaborators include: the Huntingdon House, the Matthew Ayers Law Project, the Huntingdon County District

“Juniata received the award and we are working very hard, but we know there is so much more work to be done. And we can’t do the work alone, so we are very grateful that we can rely on collaboration with our community partners,” says Jody Althouse, director of Juniata’s Office for the Prevention of Interpersonal Violence.

One next step in Juniata’s prevention work is to collaborate with the CPN, who plans to create a case study of the College’s prevention strategies.

“We want similar institutions to use Juniata’s model to propel positive change and strengthen their own model,” says Rider-Milkovich.

For more than 15 years, Juniata has offered a Spanish and service-learning study abroad program in Guatemala. Over time, it has continued to evolve and, as a result of those efforts, the College received recognition for the program’s success in November 2017. Henry Thurston-Griswold, a professor of Spanish at Juniata who created the immersion program, accepted a Global Engagement Initiative Award from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), on the College’s behalf, at ACTFL’s Annual Convention & World Languages Expo in Nashville, Tennessee.

The award recognizes community-engaged learning experiences within the world languages curriculum at all levels of instruction.

“I created the program to maximize student learning, engagement, and exposure to the diversity of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world,” Thurston-Griswold says. “Proficiency

Juniata’s Guatemala experience enables students to provide education to students at the Asturias Academy, a private, nonprofit school that serves children from the country’s poor majority, who often lack access to quality education.

“This experience truly engages students with the world, a hallmark of a Juniata education,” says Lauren Bowen, Juniata’s provost. “In addition to strengthening language proficiency and becoming more culturally competent, Juniata students also provide meaningful service in partnership with a local community and, in so doing, make a difference.”

The Guatemala trip is only one option for international study for Juniata students; the College offers 47 study abroad programs that include study on every continent except Antarctica, and nearly half of Juniata students take advantage of studying abroad.

First offered by Juniata in 2002, the course combines individualized Spanish instruction and a service-learning project that students design in the city of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.

Now an interdisciplinary experience that is fully immersive, the class is also open to students enrolled in member colleges of the Pennsylvania Consortium for the Liberal Arts, including Franklin & Marshall, Haverford, and Swarthmore, among others.

“The trip enables you to sharpen your skills, gain knowledge, and deepen your understanding and appreciation of the rich and diverse culture of a country that continues to suffer economic and social injustice,” says Megan Moroney ’18, who participated in the program.

The Quest for a Bigger Gig How the Juniata Associates Program Is Beefing up Résumés with Serious Experience

Walking through Googleplex her junior year was inspiring—and intimidating—for Brianna Watt ’16.

As she toured Google’s massive headquarter complex in Mountain View, California, while attending a Women in STEM conference, she considered it a long shot to land a job at the highly sought-after company.

And then, her senior year, the phone rang. It was Google.

“A recruiter reached out to me for an interview. I couldn’t believe it, although, I still didn’t think I would make it through the interview process,” recalls Watt, an Altoona, Pennsylvania native whose Program of Emphasis (POE) was information technology (IT) with a secondary emphasis in business management.

But her uncertainty about her qualifications would be short-lived.

Google was impressed. In fact, they let her leapfrog to the final round, and she landed a position in the company’s IT Residency Program—a 26-month stint where one learns how to support and

scale Google’s technology from the corporate infrastructure through to end users.

“They offered me a job in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and I was ecstatic,” Brianna says. “By March of my senior year, I knew I would be at Google after graduation.”

Brianna was among just 10 percent of applicants accepted into Google’s IT Residency Program. How’d she do it? Her success was thanks, in part, to a challenging, intense professional development program for students who take on the role of Juniata Associates— a.k.a. JAs. The College designed this unique initiative to offer students advanced opportunities to gain marketable work experience before they graduate.

While in the program, Brianna built significant IT skills and management experience—as well as a professional network—that gave her an edge.

A jobs program that opens more doors

Launched in 2010, the JA program helps students work their way into positions within various departments of the College such as the accounting, human resources, and marketing offices. More than an internship, each paid position comes with training and management responsibilities.

The program invites students to contribute meaningfully to the conversations and the work being done across many professional areas of the College.

Brianna was a JA in the Technology Solutions Center, in the position of student training manager, after having worked at the center’s help desk her sophomore and junior years.

“The training manager position stuck out to me because I enjoy teaching other people. It’s satisfying to see people be able to use a skill that I taught them,” says Watt, whose senior research investigated how to get more women into the

information technology field, and how to make technology more accessible.

“The experience I had in the JA position demonstrated that I could already take on responsibilities while still learning,” she says. “I was able to point to the opportunities I had as a JA during the interview process with Google.”

Designing an education and a career path Getting real-world experience before graduating from college is more important than ever. It’s something students need to compete for that first job. But Juniata has always been committed to experiential learning, according to Gail Leiby Ulrich ’81, director of human resources at Juniata—and one of the creators of Juniata Associates.

“We saw the JA program as a resource that could touch every department on campus,” Ulrich says. “And one that would encourage staff and faculty to think about students in a different way.”

Ulrich explains that a JA in her office switched her POE to human resource management and was able to get a job right off the bat in higher education human resources thanks to her experience.

“She went on to pursue her master’s degree, which put her career on a pretty fast trajectory,” Ulrich says. “Once JA participants get into the workplace, they find they’re much better prepared for their responsibilities.”

Better prepared for the professional pressure Since its inception, the JA program has grown from 35 students to 60. Each year, participants go through an interview process in their chosen department, set goals for the skills they want to acquire, and experience a performance review like they’ll encounter as working professionals.

Brandon Felus ’14, who was a standout defensive lineman for the Eagles, found football to be the perfect complement to his class assignments and work as a Juniata Associate. While at Juniata he attended an NFL regional combine and advanced from it, but pursued a career in accounting with IREX in the end.

“Teaching students how to assess their own skills prepares them to handle performance evaluations in their first job after graduation,” says Darwin Kysor, Juniata’s director of career services.

In that sense, the JA program helps students graduate with more than a degree in hand. They head into the workforce better prepared. Intellectually dexterous.

At ease with collaboration.

“In the fall, I offer an activity they can use the rest of the academic year,” Kysor says. “In the spring, since many of the JAs are seniors, I offer something more targeted toward preparation for the workforce.”

Another interview, aced A JA experience in the College’s accounting office also gave Brandon Felus ’14 a major edge his senior year. As a JA, this Columbia, Pennsylvania native had direct interaction with the College’s Board

of Trustees—a professional opportunity Juniata students enjoyed well before other colleges began to consider it.

Brandon’s JA position also provided him with hands-on practice in auditing, which helped him rise above other job candidates when he applied for a position as staff accountant at IREX Corporation in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

“Brandon stood out because he already had some experience in not just accounting, but also auditing,” says Wayne Delgado, the CPA and accounting supervisor at Irex who hired Brandon. “When you’re in the audit side of the world, you see a lot more about a company than if you’re just crunching numbers all the time.”

“He wasn’t just waiting to graduate,” Delgado says of Brandon. “His decision to become a JA ‘laid the real groundwork’ of becoming a professional.”

Stars in her eyes, but grounded with skills Emily Angeline ’18 has been interested in technology and video since high school.

At Juniata, she chose digital media arts as her POE, and in her sophomore year, cut her teeth as a junior video producer in the Digital Media Studio, where videos are produced and edited, including the series, “This Week at Juniata.”

Today, Emily helps lead a production team of her peers on the series. Her boss at the studio, Luke Fragello, director of new media communication, has helped her take on more responsibility—and made sure she’s current on the latest developments in the field when she graduates.

“He’s taught me a lot I never would have known if I wasn’t a JA. I’m learning a lot of technologies that are changing,” Angeline says.

Emily hasn’t started to look for a fulltime job yet, but she has landed a coveted internship at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, this spring, where she’ll help the organization market itself online through social media and video content.

The road less traveled leads to the right experience

For Emily, that means making professional contacts with marketing pros at Juniata that will be valuable for years to come.

That community can be a student’s cheering squad, too. Just ask Brianna.

After Brianna’s first nervewracking interview with Google, she found her emotional center back at her JA position with her colleagues.

“I had my head down and they were like ‘what’s wrong?’” she recalls. “‘Look at all these awesome things you’ve done!’ they told me. I used to undermine my own accomplishments all the time. Their support—and the confidence of having grown through the JA program—helped get me into a better frame of mind.

A The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies Sows Peace, One Student at a Time

Every day, individuals across the U.S. and around the world wake up to news stories about violence, inequality, and injustice. When students at The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies start their days, they listen to the same stories, but, as they take the plight of others to heart, they become energized.

Each is on his or her own journey to become compassionate influencers.

They attend classes and learn theories about peace and conflict resolution, while also applying their skills as agents of change domestically and abroad.

The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies was launched in 1971 through the persistence and vision of Elizabeth Evans Baker.

Her generous gift to Juniata established an endowment to fund her dream of sowing peace through education.

The Baker Institute began with a few classes and grew exponentially in the years to come to include visits from renowned speakers, the sponsorship of peace-inspired activities and experiences for students, and a 14-acre Peace Chapel, designed by Maya Lin, the architect of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) program was also born of The Baker Institute. Launched in the fall of 1974, the program’s curriculum encourages students to study the roots and sources of conflict and, in so doing, increase their awareness of nonviolent solutions.

During her time at Juniata, Savannah Parson ’18 has earned a Mike Yarrow Peace Fellowship to help her study in Seattle, Wash., served as a teaching assistant inside the Smithfield Correctional Institute near Huntingdon, Pa., and attended the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in Minneapolis, Minn.

The PACS program is one of 44 undergraduate peace and conflict studies programs in the United States, but not all grant degrees in peace and conflict studies. In addition to being housed in an Institute with a mission to support students studying PACS, Juniata’s program is global, with 10 percent of its students coming to the College from other nations. Since its founding, the Baker Institute has partnered with students who have taken courses, interned, and volunteered in ways that have given them deeper understandings of justice and helped them to develop sustainable methods of conflict resolution.

Students choose to study PACS for differing reasons, but most feel a deep calling to make a positive impact in the world around them.

Savannah Parson ’18 of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, is driven by that passion.

Parson designed her education by writing a Program of Emphasis (POE) combining PACS and sociology with a secondary emphasis in gender studies. In her educational journey, Parson has included experiences to learn about the people and places around her. She helped teach a course to inmates within a local prison and spent the summer interning with a refugee resettlement agency in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Thanks to funds from The Baker Institute, Parson also spent three weeks during summer 2017 at an intensive non-violence training in Seattle, Washington, through the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR). She also recently attended the Peace and Justice Studies Conference with members of the PACS department, where she met with Matt Meyer, the national co-chair of FOR. The duo talked about FOR and Parson was able to have meaningful dialogue with the person at the helm of organizing the training.

“Having done these things makes me comfortable in knowing I can do more,” said Parson. “People continue to ask for things to get done once they see you can do them.” Parson serves as the president of the student peace organization, PAX-O, sits on the advisory board for The Baker Institute, and has chaired Juniata’s Genocide Awareness and Action Week (GAAW).

Equipped with a selfdesigned education, an impressive resume, and a soul for peace and justice, Parson knows that she will be able to forge a career based on her mission.

“With all of the work I’ve done, I’m realizing that I may not need to know exactly what place I will be or what work I will be doing,” Parson says. “I do know I will be fulfilling what I initially wanted to do with my degree, to make an impact.”

Celia Cook-Huffman, Burkholder Professor of Conflict Resolution and assistant provost, hopes that all students who go through the PACS program live out their passions through their vocations.

Every day, she empowers students to understand other people’s personal experiences who may live vastly different lives.

“Whatever their careers might be, I hope they are critical thinkers about justice and equity,” Cook-Huffman says.

“I hope they are change agents in the world and that they make changes in ways they believe are important.”

Since graduating from Juniata in 2011, Lily Kruglak has earned her master’s degree in conflict resolution from Georgetown University, and has traveled extensively in her work as a reporting and outreach coordinator with Resolve Network, where she helps to facilitate grassroots peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and mediation.

At the 2017 Peace and Justice Studies Association’s annual conference, which Parson and other Juniata students attended, Kruglak was honored with the Next

Generation Peacemaker Award for her leadership and vision in the pursuit of peace.

The award honors skills that Kruglak cultivated while at Juniata.

After studying in Rwanda during her junior year, Kruglak returned to Juniata determined to share what she learned.

So, she rallied other students and created Genocide Awareness and Action Week, a week of speakers, activities, and handson learning experiences designed to raise awareness about genocide prevention and intervention. It is still held annually and supported collaboratively across campus.

In 2017, GAAW was co-sponsored by The Baker Institute, the dean of students office, the provost’s office, the history, politics, and international studies departments, and PAX-O.

“I’m so incredibly humbled it continues and that it’s embraced by students. I try to visit as often as I can for it,” Kruglak said. The event continues to expand and diversify. Last year, Parson added a mural-creation aspect to the week with the purpose of using the arts to advance the message of peacemaking.

“As a young activist, I often had a knee-jerk reaction to issues, but the PACS program at Juniata taught me to think about social issues in a more sophisticated way.”

Andrew Loomis ’92 of Washington, D.C., often returns to Juniata to speak about his experiences. After graduation, Loomis earned a master’s degree and doctorate. He has worked at universities, nonprofit organizations, and think tanks in Washington, D.C., before going into government work.

He served as the deputy director of an operations team at the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations. There, Loomis conducted efforts to reduce violence around the world. He currently is the director of external relations in the office of Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. In this role, Loomis works with Congress and academic institutions to increase understanding and engagement of foreign policy.

“I wanted to use my skills and knowledge from Juniata to work directly on policy issues,” Loomis says. “I feel like that’s where I have the most impact.”

Loomis credits his alma mater for inspiring his deep thinking about matters.

PACS students are involved and continue to evolve how they engage. Sarah Ullom-Minich ’18, of Moundridge, Kansas, studied abroad in Ecuador as part of her PACS journey.

There, she lived in a rural community with sugarcane farmers, which gave her a deeper understanding of the importance of equality and how it can transform relationships. A peace fellowship offered

by The Baker Institute made her trip possible.

“I was able to stay in Ecuador over the summer—my housing, food and materials for this incredible experience were paid for and I’m now extrapolating my experiences into my senior thesis,” said Ullom-Minich. She is hoping the knowledge she gained will be a catalyst to securing a Fulbright Scholarship. Her application is already complete.

Newcomers to PACS are also recipients of benefits that make travel possible. First-year student Deon Mendez ’21 of Pembroke, New Hampshire, already attended this year’s Nobel Peace Prize Forum, which he did

with a few other Juniata students and faculty. The committed peacemakers who gave presentations, led breakout sessions, and presented dialogue at the Forum inspired Mendez.

“It completely transformed me and gave me great inspiration as to what I can aspire to be,” Mendez says. “The opportunities that the Baker Institute provides for students foster incredible learning and personal growth.”

It’s safe to say that Elizabeth Evans Baker would be proud of the far-reaching effects that her dream has had on students, alumni, and those they encounter. Faculty and staff have continued to build on her vision as they partner with students, empowering each to become a positive force in the world.

“It’s an amazing privilege to walk on this journey with our students as they grow and develop a different sense of who they are,” Cook-Huffman says.

PACS alumni are thankful for the opportunity to have been on the same path with their professors, to engage as agents of change in those conflicts citizens hear about on a daily basis.

“Being able to see into different classrooms and look at everyone’s artwork opens your mind to other forms of art,” Scafuro says.

Opened for the first day of classes of the fall 2017 semester, Kepple Hall is Juniata’s home for integrated media and studio arts. From digital art, graphic design, and video production to painting and sculpture, the facility is the first building on campus where students creating many forms of art can collaborate and see each other’s work displayed on a daily basis.

“In Kepple, students feel like their work is meaningful,” Scafuro says. “Here, creating art is more than getting a grade—your work can give others inspiration.”

Students like Scafuro aren’t the only ones who’ve been craving this space. The faculty teaching integrated media and studio arts at Juniata have also longed for learning spaces that push students’ creativity to the next level.

Students in two-dimensional art classes, like painting and drawing, can customize lighting to the conditions they need thanks to two layers of built-in window blinds in their classrooms.

“In Kepple, students feel like their work is meaningful.

Rob Boryk, who teaches three-dimensional art courses, rewrote his sculpture class for use in Kepple Hall, adding new materials and challenges. For one assignment, his students need to sculpt a piece that, when photographed, looks large, but fits within a 9-inch by 9-inch by 9-inch box.

The project is based off of a challenge Rob had to complete in graduate school.

“Some students have figured out how to manipulate metal to get different colors,” says Boryk. “Others have researched Native American techniques. The only parameters are that each piece of art must be a minimum of 24 inches and it must be able to come back into the studio through that same garage door, meaning that it could be a maximum size of 12 feet in each direction.”

For their final project, students must create figurative pieces based on the human form that are site specific, meaning that they must choose a location where the sculptures bring meaning to their surroundings.

To successfully complete the project, each student must get approval from the building manager where they’d like their piece displayed, which according to Boryk, “teaches that artists don’t just do what they want—they have to be conscientious about what they do and make things work.

“Many students are interested in creating figures larger than life,” Boryk says. “If I have 16 students, sculpting at life size, it feels like there are 32 students in our classroom.”

Boryk’s living, breathing students are discovering that the openness of Kepple Hall is inspiring larger-scale projects, regardless of the project in which they currently are immersed. Like much of the art created in the new building, sizeable sculptures demand to be shared outside of the building, across Juniata’s campus.

Together or alone, or alone together, Kepple Hall provides spaces for students to meet with faculty, collaborate with one another, or work independently. Students and faculty remark that it is almost always in use.

An Environment of Professionalism

When Ryan Gibboney, instructor in integrated media arts (IMA), moved into Kepple Hall, she was excited about having space where her students could set up equipment—like cameras, lights, and booms—and then allow the equipment to properly cool before they tear it down, just like a camera crew would do in a professional setting. She was also thrilled that students would have space designated for them to complete video and design projects without having to worry about whether other classes were scheduled in the same space.

But Gibboney’s work with community-engaged learning projects in her Introduction to IMA course helped her appreciate something else about Kepple Hall.

Integrated Media Arts is an interdisciplinary program that enables students to graduate as multimedia specialists by combining art, communication, information technology, and

professional writing. So, in the introductory IMA course, Gibboney’s students partner with local organizations to design logos, create posters, and make websites for clients’ marketing needs. Rather than working on mock scenarios, creating products that will never be used, Juniata students contribute their work in a way that helps them realize the positive impact that they can have on their community.

Kepple Hall plays a role in making that difference.

“We now have a more comfortable, inviting environment for meeting with community partners,” Gibboney says. “These clients are an essential way for students to work with someone who won’t give them all the answers and prompts.”

Gibboney operates her courses like a creative agency.

Students are treated like professionals, they work in teams, and their community partners are considered clients. With Kepple Hall operational, the setting matches the expectations of the classes as well—and students notice it.

Shining a Light on TwoDimensional Art Monika Malewska, associate professor of art, teaches the College’s painting and drawing courses. She is grateful that Kepple Hall architects designed classrooms so that students could manipulate light to improve their work.

“The painting and drawing studio is facing north, which provides the specific lighting condition to do the work we do, like still life,” Malewska says. “This gives us consistent light. If the classroom faces east or west, the lighting changes dramatically.”

In addition to facing a direction where lighting is more consistent, two layered blinds enable Malewska’s classes to customize lighting to the conditions they need. They

“I will be applying the skills I have learned in video production in an internship next semester,” Scafuro says.

“My only disappointment is that I’m not in my first year at Juniata because I can tell that Kepple Hall will always be a place to expand your creativity by blending many different fields.” >J<

The emphasis on light continues into Kepple Hall’s corridors, which professors use as teaching tools, displaying the best of their students’ work.

“It’s an honor for them to have their work exhibited,” Malewska adds, gesturing toward display areas that shine lights directly on surfaces designed for students’ art to hang—spaces that mimic gallery settings beyond Kepple Hall. “These are great motivational tools.”

Thanks to these displays, students pass peer work on a daily basis. In so doing, they see what other courses they can take. But one thing Malewska has learned underlines the impact of Kepple Hall: that students’ collaboration and creativity have been unleashed.

“One Friday night, about 10:30 p.m., I realized I had left something in my office, so I came back to campus,” Malewska recalls. “When I stepped in the building, I heard music. I was hoping my students were doing homework.

Above and Beyond the Industry Average

For students—first-year or those enrolled in a doctoral program—it’s natural to feel a little anxiety on the first day of classes each semester. But, as students prepare to get down to business, shuffling around and adjusting their seats, they often fail to recognize that the professor before them is filled with the same nervous excitement.

Known for teaching Innovations for Industry, where teams of students tackle IT challenges for community clients, Bill Thomas recently coauthored a chapter in a book titled New Directions for Computing Education. He was also awarded the Beachley Award for Distinguished Teaching in May 2017.

Now known for his calm and collected demeanor, Bill Thomas, professor of information technology and computer science, was panicked on his first day as a college professor.

“I was asking myself, ‘what have I done?!?’” Bill recalls.

The stakes were high. Bill had quit his job of 15 years, sold his home, and uprooted his wife and four young children to pursue a career teaching at Mount Aloysius College. What may seem spontaneous from the outside was really part of Bill’s history of quick-witted decisions that helped him carve his own path.

Raised in the small town of Salona, Pennsylvania, Bill tempered the risk of leaving his family by staying close to home and attending Lock Haven University. Choosing a university was easy. But, when it came to choosing a major, the decision was not so simple.

“The cut-off for being an undeclared major was three semesters, and I was pushing five,” Bill recalls, grinning. “The guidance counselor gave me an ultimatum: declare a major or don’t come back.”

With lightning-fast processing speed, Bill quickly selected the field of computer science and discovered himself on the fast track for a degree.

“Completing a degree in my remaining two years of college demanded extreme focus, and I’m a better person for it,” Bill says. “The computer science field is ever changing and I thoroughly enjoy the challenge and excitement of staying current with new technology.”

After graduation, Bill married his wife, Tilda, with whom he’d go on to have four children: Colt, Carly, Tyler, and Tessa.

After settling down, Bill landed a job as a programmer and analyst at AMP, Inc., in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Looking to expand his expertise, he pursued a master’s degree at Shippensburg University.

Those students included all four of his children. Even after he and Tilda encouraged many tours of other institutions, each Thomas child was sold on Juniata’s environment and chose to attend the college where their father teaches.

Thankfully, none were ever called in by administration demanding they declare a major. Three pursued IT degrees, like their father, and thus had to take their dad’s classes, like Android Programming, Security Engineering, Web Design, Network Design and Management, and Innovations for Industry.

Taking courses from a parent could cause anxiety in many students, but the Thomas kids and Bill himself were never anxious about it.

“It’s second nature to teach, especially with my kids, despite the more formal environment,” Bill recalls. “Our daily lunches in my office were an added bonus.”

His fears had evaporated since that first day of teaching, years ago. At Juniata, the Thomas family has found their home. >J<

While attending graduate school, he acquired a part-time job at Wilson College teaching adult evening classes to earn some extra money for his growing family.

During his weekly sessions at Wilson, the seed to teach started to take root.

“I realized the impact my passion for computer science could have on my students’ lives,” says Bill. “I thought teaching might be something I should try full time.”

After he completed his master’s degree, Bill spied an ad for a position at Mount Aloysius. But leaving solid employment in an industry where he worked profitably for 15 years caused many sleepless nights.

One night, he said to his wife, “I just can’t do this.” Tilda assured him that if teaching was his calling, together they would figure it out.

With his family’s blessing behind him, Bill accepted the teaching position at Mount Aloysius. Despite his brief panic on the first day, Bill admits, “I never looked back. I never regretted starting teaching full time, even in that moment of fear.”

When his own children started their college search, Bill discovered, through an ad in the Altoona Mirror, the variety and opportunity of Juniata’s academic environment. He applied for the position and, during his daylong job interview, fell in love with the campus, thinking “it felt like home.”

That day, he was also afforded the opportunity to deliver his own lecture to a computer science class.

“This time, no panic attack,” Bill says.

“I was so adrenalized by the students’ level of engagement, excitement, and genuine interest.”

With five years of teaching under his belt, Bill was comfortable and confident on his first day as a faculty member at Juniata.

He knew what to expect. What he had not expected in his journey to Juniata—another quick but joyful twist in Bill’s teaching trek—was that his partnership with students would earn him the esteemed Beachley Award for Distinguished Teaching in spring 2017.

“I’m fortunate to work with amazing faculty members who support one another, both professionally and personally,” Bill says, recalling that his colleagues nominated him for the award. “But ultimately it is the students who are eager and willing to learn that makes teaching at Juniata so easy and so inspiring.”

Jared LaGroue, lecturer in communication, co-authored the article “Parasocial Attributes and YouTube Personalities: Exploring Content Trends Across the Most Subscribed YouTube Channels,” which was published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior. He presented the paper “Aesthetic Constellations: Adorno’s Philosophical Fragments as Musical Gestures” at the 2017 conference of the National Communication Association in Dallas, Texas.

Kathleen Biddle, professor of education, received a grant from the Persbacker Foundation for the Rural Outreach and Reading Clinic, which she serves as director.

Lauren Bowen, provost and professor of politics, coordinated the luncheon and discussion groups with women chief academic and chief student affairs officers at the 2017 Institute for Chief Academic and Chief Student Affairs Officers of the Council of Independent Colleges held in San Antonio, Texas, in November 2017.

John Bukowski, professor of mathematics, taught at the engineering institute at Lille Catholic University in Lille, France, for two weeks in May, where he gave the talk, “What’s that Sound? A Mathematical History of Tuning the Musical Scale.” In July, he performed on the piano at the Presidential Gala at MathFest, the summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America, in Chicago.

Mark McKellop, professor of psychology, Kathryn Westcott, professor of psychology, and Kelly Bletz ’17 presented a poster on

“The Evaluation of an Intervention Used to Help Support Struggling Students in Juniata’s Introduction to Psychology Course” at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in Washington, D.C. The presentation was selected to be included in Teaching Tips: A Compendium of Conference Presentations on Teaching published by the American Psychological Association.

George Merovich, assistant professor of earth and environmental sciences, was awarded a grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation’s Freshwater Research Initiative to continue researching “Endocrine Disruptors and Small-Mouth Bass Ecology in the Upper Juniata River Watershed.” He also presented two research posters and one talk at the 12th annual Susquehanna River Symposium. Lastly, Merovich was a co-author on a recently published journal article, “Evaluating Expected Outcomes of Acid Remediation in an Intensively Mined Appalachian Watershed” in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment.

Norris Muth, associate professor of biology, was elected president of the Mid-Atlantic Invasive Plant Council, which held their 2017 biennial meeting, featuring 150 plant biologists, at Juniata.

Kim Roth, professor of mathematics, received the Service Award from the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America.

Peter Rothstein, assistant professor of history, presented a talk, “One Alum’s Reflections on why Art is, and Should be, a Fundamental Part of a Good Liberal Arts Education,” at the Oberlin College Allen Art Museum Centennial Symposium.

Tammy Stuber, assistant director of career services, completed Leadership Huntingdon County, and chaired the committee that planned Huntingdon’s 250th anniversary celebration, which featured more than 50 historical, community, musical, and art events, as well as multiple town beautification projects. Stuber earned Juniata’s Presidential Excellence Award for her efforts.

Jim Troha, president of Juniata, was recently appointed to the NCAA President’s Advisory Council and was also named to the board of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, as Government Liaison Chair. Troha serves as vice chair of Pennsylvania Campus Compact organization and is also serving as chair of the board of the Landmark Conference, which consists of all the presidents from the Landmark schools.

He was asked to be a book reviewer for a new book called The Challenge of Independent Colleges.

Belle Tuten, Charles A. Dana Professor of History, spent two weeks in Leiden, the Netherlands, as a Brill Fellow, doing research on women and health in the Leiden University Library.

James Tuten, professor of history, published “‘Mighty Sweet Rice:’ Inland and Garden Rice in the Twentieth Century” in the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation Newsletter. He also reviewed Plantation Kingdom: The American South and Its Global Commodities in History: Reviews of New Books and Let Us Now Praise Famous Gullies: Providence Canyon and the Soils of the South in Environmental History. With Steven Knepper ’06, Tuten also published “Easy Riders and Hard Roads in the Early Recorded Blues” in Music and the Road: Essays on the Interplay of Music and the Popular Culture of the American Road.

Apollo Weaver, instructor of theatre, was runner-up for the Phindie Critics’ Award for Best Set Design of 2016-17 for his set design for the play Shitheads at Azuka Theatre in Philadelphia, Pa. Donna Weimer, Thornbury Professor of Communication, received the 2017 Robert T. Oliver Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Communication Association.

Daniel Welliver ’79, associate professor of sociology, was the commencement speaker at the Academic and Vocational Graduation Ceremony of the Smithfield State Correctional Institution in Huntingdon, Pa., on October 25, 2017. The title of his speech was “Persistence.”

Super-Scented Success

Alumna Angela Thompson ’ 96 found inspiration in a craft kit that led to a multi-million dollar business and a fierce commitment to the town we call home.

Angie Thompson ’96 smells like pie— cinnamon, some nutmeg, maybe vanilla.

Other days she is redolent of berries or floral scents. Whatever scent she carries on a particular day, the town of Huntingdon does, too.

Thompson founded and owns, with her husband, John Thompson ’94, Thompson’s Candle Company, located at 4th and Allegheny Streets in Huntingdon, just across the 4th Street Bridge on the banks of the river for which her alma mater is named. Very often, visitors and residents alike drive across the bridge, or stroll nearby Riverside Park, and know a new batch is underway, given the super-scented breeze.

Super-scented is a key phrase describing Angie’s products, the recipe for which she cooked up in the basement of a house on Pennsylvania Avenue almost 20 years ago, while raising two young children. That recipe led to a company that today employs 24 people, makes between 9,000 and 15,000 candles per week, stocks showrooms in Atlanta, Las Vegas, Columbus, and Huntingdon, and sells its wares in Hallmark stores, Bass Pro Shops, Tractor Supply Company, and other gift shops, chains, and grocery stores throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Key to this growth is the woman whose curiosity and organization are as potent as the candle scents themselves.

At Thompson’s Candle Company, each candle is hand-poured. Their labels, which are all drawn and designed by Angie, are also applied one by one.

“Growing up, I would collect frogs with my sister and catalog what we found,” she says, recalling her youth in Adams County, Pennsylvania.

Given her early enthusiasm, she wanted to study environmental science, with a particular interest in geology.

The quintessential winding drive to campus hooked her. “Driving through the mountains and seeing the stratified layers was exciting. I felt it was the right journey, that I was going to a wonderful place.” She looked at no other colleges.

Angie met John who studied philosophy and religious studies, in Celia Cook-Huffman’s Conflict Resolution class. By her junior year, the couple were engaged.

Once settled in Huntingdon, where John grew up, the Thompsons soon were

raising a daughter and younger son. John worked counseling delinquent children in a state facility. Angie pursued creative projects: embroidery, sewing, painting, and other arts. One day in Sam’s Club, she spotted a candle-making kit. The family was on a tight budget—kids, a new mortgage, and one income. So, John initially balked, finding the kit a little pricey. Angie persisted.

Absorbed with curiosity, she experimented to find a recipe that would burn well and evenly and emit significant scent. After a few weeks, she found an unbeatable blend and, with a solid home supply of candles, she felt the urge to share.

Angie joined a Huntingdon craft co-op and put work out for sale. Very quickly she

sold out of candles. Requests came in for more and she labored to meet demand. “I learned quickly that candles are good for growing a business because they’re a consumable,” she says.

And consumed they were. Angie soon employed a neighbor to help. After working craft shows and gaining invaluable feedback and insight, Angie saw potential. She and another artist opened the Thistle Patch Peddler in nearby Alexandria, to expand their space and offerings. By then, Angie was making several dozen candles per week, and some weeks more than 100. She needed more space than a basement on Pennsylvania Avenue.

She and John found a farmette to suit the bill. With a barn updated for storage and a workshop boasting 220-volt power and a kerosene furnace for warmth, Angie knew she hit paydirt. But, it sat on the other side of a creek, across a rickety wooden bridge. Angie had to coax some truck drivers over it to deliver wax.

By the mid-2000s, the weight of wax deliveries had become too much. Delivery drivers refused to cross the bridge, and Angie conceded. The Thompsons moved the operation to its present location and filled what seemed an impossibly cavernous space.

With a distribution center added now in Rockhill, Pa., the expensive candle kit is a wise investment in retrospect.

While much has changed from the basement days, each candle is still made by hand. “We have no automation,” Angie says, “We will not give up the quality.”

With the business growing, Angie took her hands-on ethic to other pursuits. In 2014, she and John purchased Huntingdon’s Gage Mansion, a stunning Queen Anne Victorian home built in 1896 for the one-time superintendent of the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad.

While still able to whip up a batch of candles personally, Angie now spends her time running the business in an executive role with her husband, John.

The Gage Mansion Bed and Breakfast, owned by Angie ’96 and John Thompson ’94, was recently listed as one of “18 Best Upscale Hideaways in the Northeast U.S.A. 2017” by the Huffington Post.

“John and I would leave work and walk up to Mimi’s restaurant for a martini and see the weeds around the Gage Mansion,” Angie says. “We loved the grandeur of the place and didn’t want it to sit empty. So we wrote a business plan for what we could do and then bought it.”

They found it in remarkably good condition, albeit dusty.

Now, the original woodwork polished and its stained glass windows lustrous, the Gage Mansion Bed and Breakfast offers accommodations for visitors to the region.

That success inspired Angie to spearhead Huntingdon’s Downtown Opportunity Committee, which offered a business pitch competition for local entrepreneurs, as well as a day of seminars on the topic. In addition to assisting local businesses, she and John also work in support of Huntingdon Landmarks, a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of historic buildings and the economic vitality of Huntingdon and on whose board Angie sits. In that organization’s events, the Thompsons are heavily involved, planning and executing Wine Down Weekend—a wine-tasting event on Labor Day weekend in downtown Huntingdon. They also participate in the monthly Huntingdon Art Walks.

John started working for the candle company full time and now he and Angie work at standing desks in the back office of the candle factory tending to the executive needs of a growing company. They can still walk up to Mimi’s for a martini. On the way, they pass the Gage Mansion, restored. And if the breeze is right, it may wick the scent of candles to where they sit. >J<

completed two demonstration skydives at the Lancaster Airport Days Airshow in August 2017, with approximately 20,000 people in attendance. He has made more than 900 skydives, including a dive from 30,000 feet at night, an achievement that fewer than 200 people in history have achieved.

David has made dives from 20 different aircraft and hot air balloons. He is also a private pilot and has spent more than 2,700 hours in the air.

As vice president of academic outreach and engagement at Morgan State University, Maurice C. Taylor ’72 oversees several offices and programs throughout the university. This isn’t his first leadership role, though. He has served in various influential roles including chairperson for the Maryland African American Museum board, trustee for Juniata College, president of the Council of PHOTO: LAURA HESS ’11 Historically Black Graduate Schools, and in other roles. In daily life and work, Maurice exhibits the variety of expertise, abundance of leadership skills, and dedication to service that a liberal arts education engenders.

was elected vice-president of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association. Pam is an academic hospitalist and associate chair of the Division of Hospital Medicine for Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

Q: You have made such an impact as a leader throughout your career. What are you most proud of accomplishing?

A: In my current position as chair of the Prince George’s County Financial Advisory Committee, I assist the committee in assuring that the county counsel’s $30 million fund is utilized wisely and ethically. Companies that come to the county will apply to access a portion of that fund, and as those businesses grow, they repay the loan so that we can recycle the fund in order to help the county grow its businesses.

Also, during my time serving as chair of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) board, we made a fairly large revision to the exam itself to make the exam fair and less dependent upon knowledge gained from being in a particular geographic or socioeconomic level in society.

Q: What influenced your transitions between career paths?

A: I was a professor and chair of the sociology department at Hampton University for about four years, and though I felt happy, I also felt that, intellectually, I had more to offer than the skills I was using at the university. A lot of things, including my desire to become a college president, influenced me to go to law school. My goal was not to practice law indefinitely, but I was aware that law underlies all types of relationships in the United States, and I wanted to understand that process. So, I attended law school and received my degree.

Q: What is your advice to current Juniata student leaders?

A: When I was a student, I served as captain of the football team, sophomore class president, and chair of the black students’ association, which taught me how to communicate, problem-solve, and collaborate with diverse groups of people. Never underestimate the experiences you’re having as a student, because I can promise that you will use those skills again and again.

Jeremy travels state-to-state providing personal training, individual and group workouts, strength and conditioning training, and basketball skill development clinics. Q: What inspired you to create your own business?

A: Before I started my business, I worked as an operations manager at a massive sports complex in Pittsburgh, where I got the opportunity to work with teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates, Penguins, and Steelers, as well as the Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers. Those opportunities enabled me to make some really good connections! I was training and working people out on the side, but my workouts started to get bigger and bigger. My side-gig was taking up a lot of my time, and that’s when I decided to take the leap.

Q: Who are your clients?

A: When I started my business in February 2017, I was working with 30 clients. As of now, I am helping almost 160 clients. It has been rewarding for me to see my schedule change from 3-4 sessions in a week to almost 17 in a single day.

The age dynamics of my clientele vary, but most include athletes from fifth grade to 12th grade. Some of my clients are basketball players who play professionally overseas. When they come back to the states during the offseason, we keep developing their skills and maximizing their abilities.

Q: How has your experience at Juniata shaped your business?

A: Part of my Juniata experience included studying early childhood education. Even though I’m typically on a court or in the gym rather than a traditional classroom, I often use the same practices and methods I learned at Juniata.

Teaching can be difficult but so rewarding, and the same goes for training. I live for those moments when my clients finally develop a skill and get that ‘ah-ha’ moment.

It’s amazing to see people grow as athletes, and as —Taylor M. Smallwood ’19, people, too.

When the Heart Pulses to Help

began a new position as head field hockey coach at Boiling Springs High School in Boiling Springs, Pa.

What happens when you combine service, leadership, and community into a one-year program? You get the Pittsburgh Urban Leadership Service Experience (PULSE).

This past summer, alumni Daniel E. Shaffer ’17, Heather J. Marra ’17, and Kaleigh M. Herron ’17 began their PULSE journey, volunteering with nonprofit partner organizations, living among other PULSE fellows, and attending events that develop networking skills as well as personal and professional growth.

Q: What do you find most beneficial about participating in the PULSE program?

A: “It’s so easy to network in the program, specifically with former ‘pulsers,’” says Dan, who volunteers for the Hill Community Development Corporation. “It seems as though the city is filled with former participants. PULSE arranges for them to be at our weekly information seminars. Sometimes, the nonprofit partners even encourage you to engage with former members. For instance, I was doing research for a neighborhood grant, and part of an assignment required me to contact another nonprofit partner, which had a former PULSE participant on its board of directors. This person helped me a lot with my grant project and became a familiar contact.”

Q: What about PULSE stands out to you most?

A: “I absolutely love the service component, but what makes PULSE so unique is the intentional community it creates,” says Heather, who volunteers for the Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery. “Figuring out life after graduation is scary. I moved to Pittsburgh, a big city where I don’t know anyone, but it feels like home to me because I live with seven other people who are also in PULSE. We cook, clean, and figure out life together. Q: How did you find out about this premiere leadership program?

A: “When I volunteered for Student Alumni Association I often worked registration for events like the Wine and Cheese tasting during Homecoming and Family Weekend,” says Kaleigh, who volunteers for the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh. “Later, I decided to participate in Heather Marra ’17 serves through PULSE. the event. When I was there, I talked with Sean F. Mann ’16, who worked in the PULSE program and had a lot of good things to say about it! All three of us heard of the program through Sean.”

She currently serves as a languagebased peer mentor in a year-long fellowship in Mexico with the Careyes Foundation. Katie will receive a $1,000 scholarship for graduate studies, and Juniata’s Omicron Delta Kappa chapter will receive a $300 grant in her honor.

Obituaries Dorothy E. Beck ’37

Nov. 25, 2017—Dorothy, who was Juniata’s oldest living alumnus/a at the time of her death, earned a master’s degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., and went on to have a long career as an elementary school teacher, serving the Mount Union Area School District in Mount Union, Pa., for 40 years. Not long before her death Dorothy had been interviewed for a newspaper article published on the occasion of her 105th birthday. In the article she shared that she thought airplanes were the most amazing invention of the many advances she had seen in her lifetime. She also found cell phones and Facebook quite fascinating. Dorothy was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

May 22, 2017—Emilie received a teaching degree from West Chester State Teacher’s College in West Chester, Pa. Her hobbies included reading and collecting books, gardening, playing piano, and traveling to Hawaii. She was preceded in death by husband Eben. Emilie is survived by daughters Deborah, Margaret, and Sarah, sons Myles and William, and eight grandchildren.

Oct. 16, 2017—Arline was a home economics teacher for several high schools, retiring from Salisbury-Elk Lick High School. She was a member of Somerset County Farm Women and the Pennsylvania State Education Association. She was preceded in death by husband Paul and daughter Gretchen.

June 10, 2017—John attended Yale Law School in New Haven, Conn., and Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Mass. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on General MacArthur’s staff, spending time in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. During his business career, John was involved in the production of highway safety materials and served as president of Potters Industries and director of the International Road Federation. John was preceded in death by his father Samuel, mother Ada (Householder) Gehrett, Class of 1907, and sisters Jane (Gehrett) Rayner ’35 and Catherine (Gehrett) Wenger ’40. He is survived by companion Suzanne Macdonald, daughters Barbara, Gretchen, Marcia, and four grandchildren.

Aug. 13, 2017—Charles received a master’s degree in speech and communications from Emerson College in Boston, Mass.

He served as an English, communications, and theatre teacher, as well as a speech and communications coach. At age 41, Charles began a second career in medicine, earning his doctor of osteopathic medicine. His professional passion was researching and treating cancer using non-toxic methods.

He also created a medical board exams study program now widely in use by numerous medical students, Gold Standard Board Preparation Systems. Remembering Doris Phipps Goehring Doris Goehring joined the Juniata faculty as one of three faculty members, including Elmer Maas and myself, who collaborated on a required freshman course called “Great Epochs,” in which Steve Barbash lectured twice a week. She was a smiling face who loved students and worked very hard on their behalf. Doris, Elmer, and I spent hours every week working to grade papers so that there would be as much similarity as possible between the three of us. We also had student readers who helped with an initial reading of the papers and Doris sparked some of the discussions with them.

Often, Doris and I talked about how much we were learning from these experiences!

A theatre professor, Doris put together a skit, for which Elmer wrote a song, to wrap up one spring semester of Epochs. There we were, in mini skirts, singing away—what a fun time! Alumni Hall never saw the like! Changes in the curriculum, as well as other variables, lead to Doris heading up the theatre department for some years. She also continued to teach the freshman English course.

She was a helpful adviser and students appreciated her many efforts on their behalf.

Doris was always a “go to” partner—someone who would not say “No.” She was a big help, often in the background, to any who asked her. Her smile was just part of who she was. She opened her home for staff meetings many evenings, and for students often. It was a pleasure to work with her and watch students respond to her warmth and acceptance.

Doris Phipps Goehring peacefully passed away at her home in New Holland, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016. Born Oct. 16, 1925, in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, to Thomas M. and Helen Lyttle Phipps, she graduated from Wilkinsburg High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh. While there, she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority and acted at the Pittsburgh Playhouse Theatre and Workshop. In 1950, she earned her master’s degree in English and dramatic arts at Columbia University in New York City.

In 1965, she began a 25-year tenure at Juniata, where she was called upon while on vacation to teach a freshman humanities course, Great Epochs, before moving on and teaching other subjects including theatre. Her favorite course was a summer class in puppetry. She also put on a variety of children’s theatre shows. She served as technical director of Juniata’s music department’s productions. As assistant professor of speech and theatre, she worked closely with actress and politician Nancy Kulp when she was guest instructor, and set the stage for visiting artists such as Billy Joel, Isaac Asimov, and Vincent Price. She served as women’s commentator and librarian for radio Station WMCK in McKeesport prior to her marriage and this experience led her to become the faculty adviser for the campus radio station.

Doris was also instrumental in local theatre productions including directing the Huntingdon Music Club’s production of Ye Gods and Little Fishes and several productions with the Carriage House Theatre, Nucleus Theatre, and the Huntingdon Community Theatre, where she acted and directed. After she retired in 1990 and moved to Lancaster County, she maintained her love of theatre by supporting and attending productions at the Fulton Theatre, the final being Beauty and the Beast which she loved. She named her Corgi “Mitchell” after the late artistic director Michael Mitchell of the Fulton. She also served as secretary for the Earl Township Farmland Trust.

But for all her professional achievements, she first and foremost was a loving mother to Vicki of New Holland with whom she resided, Linda Zackey of Coatesville, William of Pittsburgh, and Thomas of Jackson, Michigan. She was the very proud GeeGee, a shortened nickname meaning “gorgeous grandma,” to Jeremy, Jonathan, and David Zackey, Valerie and Andrew Goehring, and Daniel and Anne Goehring. She felt very blessed to have two great grandchildren, Zachery and Amber. She also loved her “adopted” siblings, Richard Altman and Edna Esh. She cherished the many friends she made over the years.

I Met a Juniata Alum

in the Most Unusual Place...

My friend and I were on a 10-day vacation in the southwest United States in May 2017. While driving west on I-10 in southern New Mexico, we passed a couple of Juniata vans. I didn’t know how to indicate I was an alum while we were passing on the interstate, so we simply waved out the window.

When we ultimately arrived at our destination, the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, we bumped into the Juniata contingent that was made up of students and faculty participating in the Remote Field Course, 2,150 miles from campus!

While hiking with a group on the Appalachian Trail, I have met several new friends. With one, I began to converse about a very unusual formation of rocks, which led to a discussion of our enjoyment of a geology class we each had during college. I asked her where she went to school and she replied, “Juniata College, class of 1974.” I was surprised to learn that not only did we attend the same college, but we also graduated the same year! My new friend is Kandace (Foust) Melillo ’74 (on the left in the photo).

While our paths did not cross frequently while we were at Juniata, we now have established a friendship and shared passion for hiking the Appalachian Trail.

I’d heard a Juniatian was working as a ranger at the Johnson Ridge Observatory overlooking Mount St. Helens. When my wife Dottie and I were on a trip to visit family in the Pacific Northwest, we looked him up. Erik McDonald ’95 is a U.S. Forest Service ranger. While grocery shopping, my wife, LuAnn (Saylor) Slough ’74, and I noticed a small group of other shoppers, some of whom were wearing Juniata t-shirts.

We had a nice chat with fellow Juniatians Brittany Strouth ’13, Greg Nixon ’14, and Brendan —Mike Slough ’75 Cohn ’14.

I am a pediatrician and was doing rounds at Lancaster General Women and Babies Hospital when I saw a dad wearing a Juniata College sweatshirt. Anthony Damiano ’10 and Michelle (Morchesky) Damiano ’10 had welcomed baby girl, Parker Ella, on October 16. Love those Juniata connections!

My husband Randy (Rennell, a retired Juniata employee) and I were on vacation in Port Kent, N.Y. We attended one of the 100th birthday celebrations for the Poke-OMoonshine Mountain fire tower. While listening to one of the bands, Randy was approached and asked, “Did you or your kids go to Juniata?” That was the opening for us to meet Christine LeFevre ’65.

Alumni Steve Hess ’91 and Nancy Heisey Hess ’92 and current student Joshua Brycki ’21 live less than 100 miles apart in eastern Pennsylvania, but they had to travel more than 1,700 miles from home to northwestern New Mexico to meet! In July 2017 they converged on a small Church of the Brethren mission in Lybrook, N.M., for a week of service and learning about Navajo heritage, culture, and the environmental impacts of gas and oil extraction on the Navajo. On their first night at the mission during introductions, Josh revealed he was an incoming Juniata student, and an instant connection was made.

I’m an assistant professor of molecular and cellular biochemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. When I traveled to the University of Utah to give a seminar, I ran into Juniata classmate Casey Hemmis ’03, who is a postdoctoral fellow there. We got to catch up over lunch and enjoy some craft beer from Salt Lake City.

In July 2017, I was volunteering at a Baltimore Road Runners Club trail race. I sat down at the registration table and almost instantly received a comment about my Juniata baseball cap. Lo and behold, I was sitting beside Suzie (Winterbottom) Boltz ’85, who was also volunteering at the race (in true Juniata spirit). I’m so happy I was wearing my hat; otherwise, we may not have made the connection!

While volunteering with my mother at a golf tournament to benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Towanda, Pa., a man noticed her Juniata umbrella.

He questioned if she was an alum, so she pointed him in my direction. It was George Wynne ’71, and he has been attending that same tournament for many years. Small world!

As an international student living in Cloister Hall, Masafumi “Fumi” Nozawa ’16 became informal conversation partners with Hiromi “Peko” Edgin, a Juniata custodian. Peko invited Fumi and several other Japanese students to enjoy holiday meals at her home with her family. While visiting Japan in summer 2017, Peko and her family reconnected with Fumi and once again had a meal together, this time in their home country.

While working with the Student Conservation Association on Peddocks Island in May 2017, my crew and I returned to the visitor’s center to inventory tools at the end of our work day and saw some people having a cookout near the beach. One man walked up to us and asked if we wanted to join them for some burgers. Having worked outside in 90-degree weather all day, we were so excited about the offer. As we made our way over to the grill, the same guy who had invited us over noticed my Juniata shirt. It was Max Martin ’13. We were students at Juniata at the same time and had a great time chatting about mutual friends, professors, and classes. It was so nice to see another Juniatian—on an island of all places!

In June 2017, Huntingdon celebrated its 250th birthday. Juniata’s community members contributed to the celebration in many ways. The Juniata College Museum of Art exhibited a Gilbert Stuart portrait of Huntingdon founder William Smith, and several employees volunteered their time organizing historic, cultural, and arts events to mark the occasion.

Even the campus quad served a role. It was the launchpad for 250 lanterns—one for each year of the borough’s existence.
