Yak’éi haat yeey.aadí It is good you all have come here. Welcome to the homeland of the Áak’w Kwáan and T’aakú Kwáan Tlingit of Southeast Alaska. The Tlingit people have owned and occupied these lands and waters since time immemorial. Scientific evidence reveals that Indigenous Peoples have lived here for more than 10,000 years. The Tlingit are guided by four ancient values that remain central today: •

Haa Aaní (protecting and honoring the land): The Tlingit believe that everything has a spirit, including the animals and trees. In utilizing resources, the Tlingit acknowledge the Spirits of the Land, Sea, and Air.

Haa Latseení (strength of body, mind, and spirit): Young Tlingit men and women are taught to achieve physical and inner strength, to protect and care for their community, to seek truth and knowledge, and to adapt to changing times while maintaining the integrity of ancient values.

Haa Shuká (honoring ancestors and future generations): The Tlingit maintain strong bonds with their ancestors, whom they honor in their daily lives and in ceremonies. They also protect their land and culture for their children and grandchildren and those who will follow them. Wooch Yáx (maintaining social and spiritual balance and harmony): This value guides relationships with others and includes kaa yáa awuné (respect for others) and at yáa awuné (respect for all things). Please look for Tlingit translations throughout this planner.

Soar to new heights on a fantastic scenic adventure aboard the Goldbelt Tram, the number one attraction in Juneau. The Goldbelt Tram whisks away visitors from Sea Level to SEE Level, 1,800 FT above historic downtown Juneau. The 5-minute ride travels through the rugged natural temperate rainforest terrain to the alpine above. Once you exit the main facility you are welcome to explore some of the trails located on the Mountain or visit the Tr’Ale House, our beer garden in the woods. Southeast Alaska connects with people on an emotional level. The world as it was created still exists here. The tide pulses twice a day as if the earth takes two long, slow breaths and pushes aside the sea, moving it farther from shore then bringing it back again. Tides and currents circulate marine nutrients and cold water, both necessary for rich ocean life. We are people of the trees and the tides. Mist carries the scent of the sea and its abundant life to marry it with the land. Waves lap gently, sculpting the sand; at other times, they crash wildly against the rocks and erupt into white fans of spray. Castoff shells litter the shoreline and mix with braids of kelp and pillows of sea foam. Clams snuggled beneath the beach at low tide squirt their hidden presence like fountains. Silt tints the outflows of glacial rivers and creates distinct blocks of gray where fresh water meets green salt water. Where the waters blend, aqua ribbons weave together.

The sky is never empty here. Ravens, eagles, hummingbirds, sapsuckers, hawks, swallows, sparrows, geese, cranes, ducks, swans. The air is never birdless. Watch their movements to learn the business of the natural world. Listen in winter alongside a mostly-icy stream for the lilting song of the American Dipper when all the other birds are hushed by the cold. The forest exhales wisps of fog toward the sky. Caught by the breeze and stretched into strands of mist, the fog drapes itself above the trees, reaching to reunite with the clouds. Layers of fog dissolve then reappear. In a similar fashion, the northern lights wrap themselves through the sky like a giant lightshow of celestial fog. Appearing then disappearing. Typically pale green in color in Southeast Alaska’s northern sky, the aurora borealis rewards skywatchers once the night’s darkness offers a backdrop. Some of the aurora’s mystery is decoded by science: the University of Alaska Fairbanks provides a link to learn the likelihood, extent, and intensity of nightly aurora potential in our state. In some places, land belongs to people. Here, people belong to the land. Like the landscape, Southeast Alaskans are as strong and resilient as the giant spruce and hemlock trees that we live among. Green needles persist year round on the long boughs. Mossy carpets cushion softness and color beneath the trees. Like our forest surroundings, we are steadfast. Life thrives in the natural environment. Rain nurtures. Waterfalls swell. Fawns prance after their mothers. Songbirds fill the air with avian conversations. It’s springtime. Leaves burst open as daylight lengthens to its fullness of 18 hours in June. By late August, golden leaves brighten the land. The gentle low-angle sun of autumn enriches colors. GLACIERS sít’

Glaciers are our daily connection to ancient times. Stunning blue ice peeks from sharp-edged blades of glaciers. Waterfalls spout from openings beneath snow-covered ice that is hundreds of years old. Mendenhall Glacier and 38 others named "rivers of ice" flow down from the Coast Range where they are born in the 1500-square-mile Juneau Icefield. They provide a continuous supply of fresh water that nurtures the tiniest creatures and the largest species. Glacial ice and meltwater redistribute pulverized nutrients from mountains to meadows. They feed microorganisms that grow fish and forests. Glaciers are blue due to the density of the ice compacted over generations of snowfalls. From the miniscule to the mighty, wet marine air, cold temperatures, and time build glaciers from tiny snowflakes. Glaciers grind down the mountains they cover. Most of Alaska’s glaciers are melting, some very rapidly. In the temperate climate of the coastal rainforest, warming temperatures mean more rain and less snow. Big changes are predicted and we continue to see them every year. Examining Juneau’s glaciers can be done by road, boat, or aircraft. The easiest exploration is the 13-mile drive from downtown to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center and a hike to Nugget Falls. Flightseeing lifts you above the ice to walk on glaciers, ride in a dogsled, or gaze on the vastness of snow and ice. Waterborne excursions carry passengers to nearby Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness and through Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. A leisurely Alaska Marine Highway ferry ride offers a relaxing journey through the Inside Passage with glaciers spilling from high mountain valleys.

yáay - whale kéet - orca Watchable wildlife opportunities continue in the sea. Around Juneau, humpback whales congregate in summer to feast on herring and tiny organisms called krill. A variety of tour operators offer chances to observe the huge whales from boat decks of all sizes. Occasionally, humpbacks can be seen from shore from highway waysides. Watch for the bold plume of misty breath as the whales exhale when they surface. Humpbacks are great migrators: they feed in cold Alaska waters then move to warm Hawaiian zones for birth and mating in winter. They arrive in late spring in Southeast Alaska hungry for the food they cannot find in tropical waters. Orcas, or killer whales, are a special treat to see. Large pods of fish-eating orcas travel the length of the Inside Passage with occasional sightings in Juneau. Mammal-eating orcas swim in smaller, stealthy pods searching for seals and sea lions. The distinctive 6-foot tall knife-shaped dorsal fins of male killer whales are usually the first sight of a pod. Yet these long-lived marine mammals are guided by the mothers in their midst: orca societies are matriarchal. Look for young whales of all species when they surface to breathe beside their much larger mothers.

FISHING

ast’eixí - fisherman Five species of wild salmon, (pink - cháas’, sockeye - gaat , coho - l’ook, chum - téel’, king - t’á), herring - yáaw, halibut - cháatl, many other finfish and shellfish fill our waters, pots, and dinner plates. Commercial, charter, personal use, and subsistence fishing are all important economic and sustenance drivers. Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulates fishing by location, date, and gear. Fishing licenses are required. Your charter boat captain can provide a license or you can purchase one at various retail outlets. Pick up a free state fishing guide when you get your license. By ensuring safe and adequate returns of salmon and other fish, we can continue to harvest mindfully and sustain the fisheries. Fish hatcheries provide brood stock for release to the ocean when the juvenile fish are big enough. Fish farming, however, is prohibited in Alaska. The life cycle of salmon nurtures everything on land and in the sea. Salmon begin life in freshwater, migrate to salt water to grow and feed, then return to their natal creek to spawn a new generation. Different species use different creeks at different times of the year. Spawning salmon change their appearance from silvery bright ocean fish to multi-colored skin patterns as each species charges toward home. Salmon feed the forest when their remains fertilize the land after spawning or passing through wildlife. Fresh and frozen packaged seafoods fly south daily in summer. Experts can help you prepare your catch for safe transport and good eating after you return home. Be sure to get some great recipes for sharing the bounty in flavorful ways. Smoked salmon is convenient to carry or ship.

Juneau’s winter is anything but colorless. The snow-covered 4,000-foot mountains are canvases for nature’s best paintings. Shadows carve indigo contrasts amid sun-softened pastels. Freshness beckons us into the daylight. Snow on the forest floor brightens the lush deep-green spruce and hemlock landscape that surrounds us. It lures us to ski on groomed cross-country trails or Eaglecrest Ski Area slopes. By night, cloudless evenings grant the chance to see the northern lights and star-filled skies. Wedged between ocean and mountains, Southeast Alaska’s climate is moderated by the maritime environment. Winter temperatures hover around freezing while summers are cool and misty. Winter is Juneau’s social season. The town swings into activity. Choose from world-class plays, restaurants, lectures, symphony performances, gallery openings, and dances. Start with fresh-roasted coffee and an energizing breakfast, then take off for the scenery, and finally return for the cultural immersion and dinner. Live like the locals.

WINTER ACTIVITIES What do we do all winter? SO MUCH! When the summer tourism season finally winds down, contrary to popular belief, things just get rolling in Juneau. The weather often turns rainy and windy in late fall and is followed by the occasional snow, storms, rain, and so on until lovely spring days appear. So what do we do? We Get Outdoors: We get outdoors all season long and simply dress for the weather, which means good raingear and waterproof footwear for hiking, dog walking, and mushroom hunting. Snowy weather is still great for hiking, and that beautiful fresh snow brings the added value of getting to strap on snowshoes, cross-country skis, or heading to our community-owned ski area. Located on Douglas Island, this is no rinky dink ski area. Eaglecrest Ski Area boasts 640+ acres of skiable terrain, backcountry access, and a 1620' vertical drop, challenging even for our most experienced skiers. Short lines, no expensive parking fees, and views for miles. Juneau has a wonderful ice rink with all the amenities of a larger city. The fees are small but the fun is big. Outdoor ponds around Juneau are a draw for ice skating and anyone can join a pickup game of ice hockey. We also ice skate (and snowshoe and cross-country ski) on the lake in front of the Mendenhall Glacier when it's safe. We Get Cultured: Complementing the many winter outdoor adventures, we delight in the fact that Juneau is an arts town! We boast a symphony, an opera company, several professional theatres, drag shows, community concerts, a wearable arts competition, an annual gallery walk (early December) and numerous art classes. We find our niche, no matter what that might be, and if it doesn’t exist, we create it! We Get Together: Soup weather also brings people together, and many Juneauites host dinner parties, game nights, and movie nights (replacing the beach picnics and camping activities of summer). The degree of richness of a Juneau life is measured by the number of XTRATUFs© and other boots piled at the front door. Sitting idly by and letting our fabulous winter pass us by isn’t our way. We participate in (or instigate) the activities of this wonderful season, sharing the love of the stunning scenery and the closeness of our remote wilderness capital city. It’s what we do.

ALASKA NATIVE CULTURE The Northwest Coast Indigenous people have stewarded the land here since time immemorial. The Áak’w Kwáan and T’aakú Kwáan are Tlingit Alaska Natives with traditions and history tied to their intimacy with the natural world. Balance, reciprocity, and respect are key qualities of their culture and the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people are generous with sharing cultural knowledge with others. Clans and tribes revere their elders and celebrate their cultural vitality with appreciation for the ancestors’ knowledge and dedication to future generations’ wellbeing. Resilience is demonstrated through longevity and continued adaptation to both traditional and contemporary life. The impact of Alaska Native culture can be seen throughout Juneau. Today, Tlingit names appear on Juneau’s buildings, maps, and signs, often with interpretation so all can learn the Indigenous language. In the heart of downtown Juneau, Sealaska Heritage’s Walter Soboleff Building presents the culture in meaningful exhibits told by the people who know it best. Don't miss out on the Kootéeyaa Deiyí (totem pole trail) that showcases 14 totems along the seawalk down to Bill Overstreet Park, home of the life-sized breaching whale statue, Tahku. There are 30 planned kootéeyaa (totems) in total and three more are currently being carved. In June of even-numbered years, "Celebration" welcomes thousands of Native people to Juneau. Following ancient protocols, traditional Tlingit canoes arriving for Celebration approach the shore with cedar paddles pointed to the sky. They request permission to enter clan territory and are received with timeless songs and drumming. Regalia with years of clan history are brought out to proclaim their heritage. Dances performed in new and old ways enrich the understanding of all attending the huge gathering.

NORTHWEST COAST ARTS Part of a Living Culture

Juneau is the Northwest Coast Arts Capital of the World. Northwest Coast art evolved over thousands of years in the rich and complex Indigenous societies of the Pacific Northwest of North America. It is wholly unique to this region of the world. Northwest Coast art is distinctive for its use of formline design. A disciplined interconnected framework of curving lines of varying width (formline) is combined with other shapes to compose images of animals, spiritual beings, elements of the landscape, or other designs. Although the basic conventions of formline design may seem simple, it takes a master to create the kind of balance and flow that this art form can express. Formline designs can be seen in Southeast Alaska Native art traditions such as totem poles, clan house posts, bentwood boxes, and Chilkat weaving - traditions that continue to evolve through the work of contemporary Indigenous artists. Today’s artists also create jewelry, apparel, and other artwork featuring formline designs for everyone to enjoy.

Today’s Juneau reveals the character of its mining heritage. Houses climb hillsides trodden by early miners’ boots. Sinuous streets echo original shorelines. Structures built to serve a bustling community still stand along those streets. The iconic turreted Franklin Street former laundry building, completed in 1901, connects a bygone era with 21st century visitors who stroll downtown’s historic district. Gastineau Channel’s gold mines established a stable culture that outlived the West’s typical boom and bust cycles. The mines began in 1880 when local Tlingit Chief Kowee guided two prospectors into a steep basin to show them the gold they were seeking. Joe Juneau and Richard Harris are credited with the discovery. Nuggets on the surface indicated where deeper veins lay. Complex networks of underground shafts and tunnels eventually honeycombed mountains. Large scale industrial processing mills rose on each shore. Innovative engineers developed operations that were famous throughout the mining world. While the gold was melted into bars, tailings built a solid, level landscape for the towns to grow.

The Treadwell, Perseverance, Thane, and Alaska-Juneau mines nurtured other businesses and imprinted their names on the future. Dairies, markets, manufacturing plants, churches, theaters, bars, schools, and civic organizations prospered. Some endure. The pioneer spirit lives today in the great-grandchildren of early mining families. They are firefighters whose predecessors saved Juneau from being engulfed in flames. They host present day church socials, pancake breakfasts, parades on the Fourth of July, and dedications honoring fishermen lost at sea. They started businesses that stepped in when the big mines faded. Fishing, tourism, education, government, and the services that complement those ventures emerged. Mining continues to play a vital economic role. Two large mines operate off the road system with Juneau as their hub. Historic mining’s legacy lives on in hydropower plants, trails, and memories. Aside from the ore deposits, there is gold — free for all — in Juneau’s sunrise and sunset.

Here are some ways to make planning your special trip easier: 1. Think about who you will be traveling with or if you are traveling solo. Will you have to balance a range of interests if traveling multi-generationally, in a group, or focus only on your interests? 2. What activities do you want/enjoy? Assess your interests and priorities based on your personal goals for the trip or that of your group (example: glacier viewing or trekking, whale watching, sportfishing, museums, Gold Rush history, hiking, bear viewing, Alaska Native arts & culture, shopping, dog mushing, driving tour). 3. Prioritize your interests and decide what you MUST do for the trip to be a success and what else looks like an amazing experience. Determine if there is any seasonality (example: northern lights in late June when there is no real darkness isn’t going to happen). 4. Consider making the most of your trip to visit Juneau and then use our location as a Southeast hub and fly small planes or take a ferry to other communities. WHAT TO PACK Why do the locals all wear those brown boots? The go-to footwear in Southeast Alaska is the knee-high rubber brown boot also known as the "Southeast Sneaker." The boot earned its reputation among Alaska fisherman and rainforest residents because it’s sturdy, waterproof, and almost slip-proof under wet and slimy conditions, making it more useful than most sneakers. Around Juneau, this boot goes with everything from rain gear to formal wear. You'll see them on fishermen, hikers, legislators, store clerks, students, and bankers.

How do I pack for Juneau? When it comes to Juneau weather, prepare for the rain and hope for the sun. As noted on the Juneau Weather page (pg. 58), the temperate rainforest keeps our town from being overly warm in the summer and overly cold in the winter. If you'll be spending time outdoors in Juneau, it's a good idea to always include the following:

Take an augmented reality tour and see how the mine looked in the late 1800s. Picnic on Sandy Beach which is made from mine tailings. Or just walk through the trails and read the informational signs to get a feel for what life was like in the heyday of Treadwell.

Hike the Trail of Time and see the glacier’s recession. Visit with cultural ambassadors to learn about Alaska Native people's relationship with the land. Hike out to Nugget Falls. Grab lunch and then go whale watching in the afternoon. Eagle and Herbert glaciers are often visible from the whale watching grounds. Day 3: Perseverance Trail Hike & Last Chance Mining Museum Feel the cold air rush out of the mountain at Ebner Adit before starting Perseverance Trail. Pass steep drop-offs to Gold Creek, beautiful Ebner Falls, and old mine tunnels and adits. Spend the afternoon at the Last Chance Mining Museum, a historic mining building in a wilderness setting featuring a 3-D glass map, the world's largest air compressor, and underground exhibits.

WILDLIFE VIEWING Humpback whales Humpbacks feed all summer in Juneau and there are many whale watching companies to choose from. Or see them on a ferry trip or Glacier Bay Day Cruise. Bears Black bears are found throughout the Juneau area. Be bear aware as you hike and even walk downtown or drive out-the-road. Brown bears can be viewed with a guide on Admiralty Island where the largest concentration of brown bears are. One bear per square mile! Seals and sea lions Check Macaulay hatchery when the fish are running or Statter Harbor when the fishermen are in. Orcas There are never any guarantees as far as orcas are concerned, but depending on the year, they are seen randomly. Marmots Shrine of St. Therese causeway is a good place to find these little guys sunning themselves on the rocks.
